Does your doll "smoke"? Why?

Jan 18, 2006

    1. To me smoking is purely an "artistic effect", and I like smoking drawn in anime and manga, or in movies for an aesthetic purpose. Though in real life I do not smoke, and my dolls don't smoke either simply because dolly cigarettes can't be lighted and don't have cool smoke effects to be watched and enjoyed ^^;.

    2. I hate it in real life. I hate what it does. I can't stand it.

      But it's sooooo hot ._.;;;;

So that's why, I guess. It's not real life, for some reason it's hot... and that's why some of my dolls smoke.

    3. I agree. So long as it doesn't hurt anyone or smell, it's hot. And fake cigs can't do either. :)

    4. Okay, the incence idea is fantastic! I should try that sometime...

Quick fact: Nicotine is actually a stimulant, not a sedative. ;)

You should make little signs that say "Smoking" and "Non-smoking" lol

    5. Chemically this is true but for the smoker it very often has a calming effect. It's when you start smoking them one after the other that you get the stimulant effect.

    6. Several of my dolls smoke especially Khary who is my biker bad boy. It just adds to the ambience to have him sitting there with a ciggie in one hand & his bottle of wine in the other. Both of my goddesses are terrible smokers. They're indulging themselves in earthly pleasures. Cathan smokes out of frustration. And I'm sure there're others who just haven't managed to pry a cigarette out of one of this crew's hands.

    7. Um, the cig is just a prop. No doll has to worry about health risk. Why judge?
I feel this way and I do not smoke...

    8. lol..well I guess everyone has there own opinions on Smoking, yes it is a bad habit, but when your young (witch is wen most ppl start smoking now a days) it I guess looks cool..I would know im 16 and have many friends around me who smoke who think it looks cool, now I have before not to be cool, just to satisfy my curiosity , but once u start smoking it can be hard to quite, so I dont think its something to freak out about, ppl make mistakes and its only really there Business if they smoke or not (not to be rude)

personaly I atually do think it makes my doll look Bad-ass..lol..cuz its just the Trend these days, and the trend I stick to. and everyone has there own opinions and styles of what bad-ass is..^_^

    9. well none of my dolls smoke yet, but the one i'm planning for at the end of the year will. mostly because i feel it fits the character i have planned for him. he'll probably smoke something more than just ciggerettes too. >>.

i also think it'll make him look badass. he's a punk mutant with an attitude. the ciggerettes help to calm him when he gets real pissy, or anxious.

but i also see nothing wrong with smoking ciggerettes. you want to do it. do it. i have no qualm with that. i have more issues with people telling other people they can't smoke. i don't smoke but i feel it's there right to. just like it's there right to have a smoking dolly.

    10. Well... I smoke. Sometimes. Why? Because I think it tastes good, it makes my thoughts gather and slow down a bit, and - yes - I think it looks cool. Looks, not is. I love the look of smoke coming out of someones mouth and nose, and I think that the poses you usually make while holding a cigarette looks nice, even though they would look just as nice if holding something else than a cigarette.

And I don't think it's antisocial at all, if anything it's the opposite. I've made a lot of friends while smoking. "Hey, you got fire?", "What brand are those?" (I smoke an unusual brand and slim cigs), "Can I taste them?".

So. Atm I don't have a doll but my former doll smoked and my future dolls will smoke. Why? Because I think looks cool. And yes, I'm an adult.

    11. one of my dolls smokes, because he (as in his CHARACTER) thinks smoking is cool. and thats why he does it. He is also a bit of a rebel and very stressed always. So it just fits him.

    12. Does your doll smoke? Yes I have a character who smokes

Does your doll smoke because you do? Nope, never have and never will

If so, why? Because "Smoking isn't cool; it's a filthy, disgusting, antisocial habit" and my doll has a perverse sense of humour, the more he's told not to do something the more he will :eusa_naug

    13. I love smoking. Smoking is visually stunning, elegant, and sensual. It can also look disgusting and do disgusting things to the body which also makes it intriguing. Smoking is like the visual essence of that sexy non nonchalant, relaxed, and rebellious attitude that many people wish they had. Visually, smoking is the "f*ck you" to danger. Risk taking is and has always been considered sexy.

It also does wonders when your driving a car, smoking a cig, and singing to music trying to get over a terrible day at work. It's just soothing and (as ironic as it is) helps focus on slow breathing, which naturally slows things down.

One of my dolls doesn't smoke and one does, and it's because one likes it and one doesnt even think about it.

I also smoke socially mostly at parties and concerts, which I guess makes me find it not antisocial. In fact when I was younger was very anti smoking I couldn't enjoy being around lots of people because of my disgust.

Everyone's paranoia about smoking and hate of smoking always makes me want to tell people never to get in a car again. They are more dangerous than smoking and kill just as many or more people and have a similar sex/danger appeal, but I don't see a lot of people ragging on the dangers of driving.

Also put that cupcake down. Type 2 diabetes is a killer.

    14. well my character , Judas, will be a smoker. i never really thought about why. his character is always trying to be popular and considered cool, so for me it made sense that he would smoke. since if i think about it teenagers are subject to peerpressure and if he likes to try impressing people it makes sense that smoking would appeal to him. the only reason he still smokes as an adult is because he is obviously addicted by now.

    15. To be honest, I never really thought about it much until I now just read this O.o I personally do not like smoking at all because just a wiff of cigarette smoke gives me a terrible headache and I hate the way the smell clings to absolutely everything around it. I won't even get started on the unnecessary and stupid health risks caused by them.

But because these dolls are not real, are not smoking real cigarettes and are not actually able to hurt themselves, I don't quite view it the same way for them as I do for real people. For dolls, I think it can definately give off a certain personality type and mood, which is helpful in photography and portraying more about the dolls character. None of my dolls smoke but I think that's because up until now, like I said, I never really thought twice about it. Now that I actually have given it some pondering over, I am still fairly certain my boys will remain non-smokers. I can perhaps see sometime in the future maybe Nazomi taking it up under times of extreme stress because he know it can't kill him, but because of his extreme vanity I'm pretty sure he'd get disgusted very quickly by the smell and effects it has one ones teeth and try to quit. Otherwise though, I'm pretty sure I'll just do without it. If it's not for some actual reason in that it adds to or is an actual part of the dolls personality/backstory, I think it's pretty useless to add it in there.

    16. i dont have a problem with smokers and i agree it can be sort of sexy at times but i personally dont smoke and the smell makes me sick and my doll will not be a smoker cuz the thought of him being a smoker will just make me imagin him smelling like smoke, and i hate the smell of smoke...

i dont think the smell of smoke always bothered me, but my step mom and her entire family where chain smokers, and they where all abusive. her parents emotionally and physically abused her and her siblings and they all abused their children so at a younge age these "bad scary people" always smelled like smoke, and where always smoking, while my loving older brother and a few other people i was close to that smoked hid it from me and somehow hid the sent too.

so its a psychological thing for me i guess, i smell smoke and boom! bad memories come back

    17. Let's see. I live with a smoker, and I have since I was born. I find it absolutely appalling how people trash talk them when many of them are rather nice and descent people. We all will die from something, and we ALL die. Life is about enjoying yourself and appreciating what it's worth rather than drowning in a bubble of 'prolonging the inevitable.' What's the difference between smoking a cigarette and eating that "big mac" at Mc Donald’s? Or drinking that double shot espresso from Starbucks? Breathing causes death, living and being alive causes death. Eating organic food causes death. Not taking antibiotics properly causes deaths. It's all the same.

Now, as for why I like to have my doll smoke? I like it because it is a part of his maturity. As a young child, he was raped by a man who smoked, drank, and womanized every night and day (One of my wishlist dolls “Ace”). He has a phobia of it. Up until he is broken of the stigma he thinks of it as a lesser form of life. But as he meets with his lover, and becomes more secure in his own self he slowly opens up to living for more than just old age. He realizes that his lover, a zombie, died fulfilling nothing in life, and that he does not wish to encounter the same fate. Thus he turns slowly to become more "live without regrets" rather than "Live for live's sake." Smoking, drinking, drugs, eating for the sake of pleasure, ect. It's a transition that I love about him. It turns him from a shallow boy into a fulfilled man. It works for him, I like it about the story.

    18. As a smoker, I'm going to take offense at the OP saying smokers are filthy and anti-social. Cause, I'm a *heavy* smoker. At the end of the day, when I change and get a shower, I don't smell like it. My teeth aren't yellow. And I've had several good conversations with other smokers over a smoke break at work.

For why I smoke? No good reason. I started at 12. I quit every so often but never for more than a few months. I get stressed, I smoke more. Contrary to what some one said earlier, I KNOW where the bins for butts are, and if I don't see one, I put it out on my pack or the ground, and then put the butt back in my back. Which doesn't look cool, suave or sexy , but I don't like litter.

Oh, and btw, I knew the health implications on starting. :3' OH NOES CANCER DEATH ICKY TEETH SMELLY HANDS (wait, what? I dun been smokin 9 years, I don't got none of that. And daddy, he dun been smoking some 40 years, and he dunt got none either. Ohhh, grandpappy! HE DUN BEEN SMOKIN 67 YEARS! And he also dun got none, and no other health issues)

As for dolls doing it? If it fits the character, why not? No need for a reason, as many real people couldn't tell you for the life of them WHY they started. And I don't even buy the "fits the character" thing. Many many different types of people smoke. So, if it's a flaw, for what ever reason you'd like to have your dollie do, THEN GO FOR IIIIITTT~ They have no lungs. I doubt your ever going to have a *real* smoke that tiny for them. They cannot give off second degree smoke. Unless you light it yourself. And then I have to ask myself "what the poop".

As for people saying they can't look past the smoking for the sculpt? Whhhhat? You're gonna tell me you looked at that LUTS breakaway and said "yeah, I could totally get that, but it's smoking, I don't want it now". Yeaaah, ok. Smoking for these guys is a prop. A little piece of paper, maybe with a marker coloured "filter". MAYBE some photoshopped smoke. Maybe. And you can't see past that for a sculpt? Some how, that doesn't really hit base with me. I don't like erotic doll pictures. I think it's weird. But on the few times I've come across them on my LJ communs, I've seen sculpts I've liked. Left comments, asking. A prop, a pose, is never going to deter someone with common sense off of a doll sculpt. Pooooo~

The thing about impressionable younger members in here is bullcockery. I'm sure those same younger members go to 7-11 and see the employees with a "better than thou" attitude leaning against the building chain smoking, or the group of slightly older kids at school huddled where there not supposed to be, smoking.

Sure, it's a bit of a filthy habit. It's expensive (I say to people with dolls that cost 500+). But people, you can't take money to the grave, and everyone dies eventually anyways. So, I say enjoy yourself.

And anti-smokers? hi. yeah. You guys. Unless you're allergic, shove it. Us smokers already have a different part of the eatery to be, have to be so far away from most buildings, and most of us are pretty considerate of those around us who don't like it. If you don't want to smell it, see it, walk by it, through it, you can go else where, just as easily as us.

(When I'm 70 and pooping myself, I'm sorry, but I'll be GLAD to have those ten years off my life)

Smoking is just a character flaw, like being jealous or being greedy. It makes the dolls personalities more realistic and gives their character more depth.

And one more thing. Don't like it, don't look.

And Chocobochaos, I think I love you for saying that. :D

      *jumps off the tl;dr box*

    19. There are other things in cigs other then nicotine, some of which do have sedative effects. ;)

Not to mention there are different things put into different brands of smokes. Not every cig is the same. Ever heard of smokes with Guarana in them?

There's so many different kinds out there and it's not just the addiction "fix" that's calming. There are people out there who actually aren't addicted after all...

    20. I agree smoking is a disgusting habit, I despise it, despite the fact that I care about people who do smoke. However, it is in some of my characters personality to smoke. I choose to make it that way because of how people in their situation would react. For example, one of my characters who smokes (I have 2 out of ...a lot ><) lost his mother at a young age, was abandoned by his father, and had no real parenting figure. And at least were I come from, those kind of people are more likely to smoke and do drugs.

Perhaps when his character matures I may have him quit, it would make me happy.

Smoking to look cool for dolls and in movies is a big turn off, now if it's historically acurate or if there is some reason, thats fine but just too look badass. No.
