Does your doll "smoke"? Why?

Jan 18, 2006

    1. *grabs face with both hands and gives you gaint kiss on lips* i luvs yous. :aheartbea *huggles* you're brilliant. i apploud everything you just typed.

and to join your grandfather, mine smoked for almost 70 years before he passed without a single heath issue till he got hit by a asphault truck 4 years ago.

and judging someone for smoking is about the same as judging someone cause they have a doll. kinda rude and kinda stupid.

    2. Raisallie you basically said most of what i wanted to say. :XD: definitely one of the most entertaining and well put post albeit OT lol

seriously though, if someone raises an argument over smoking dollies giving bad influence over underage owners... isn't it pretty much on the same line as how girl dollies should not have tiny waist and big boobs because it gives impressionable younguns wrong body image? it just turns into eternal quest for the PCness, IMO.

now, as for WHY none of my boys and girl smoke - it's MY house, damnit! they gotta do what I say!

but then again, maybe one day when i have some time to make ciggy prop, and pose, and do post production on pix- yea, then maybe one of my boys might enjoy occasional cig here and there.:XD: and the reason why? I enjoy smoking. as simple as that.

    3. One of the dolls that I want (well, I want almost all moulds, but this girl's near the top of my list) is for a character (named Tammie) that smokes, so the doll will smoke.
She doesn't smoke because I want her to look "bad-ass", and I'm aware that smokers can annoy people, and the presence of cigarettes drive some people off. But that is why Tammie smokes.
She is antisocial, and doesn't care about the health risks. She smokes to drive people off, so I'm not going to make Tammie stop smoking because you, or anyone else, doesn't like it. That defies the point of her smoking, and if I want a character to smoke, then they'll damn well smoke. You don't have to watch.

    4. Smoke 'em if you got 'em, Raisallie.

I smoked for half my adult life and, coincidentally[?], quit shortly before I started collecting dolls. I am now the Great American Non-Smoker: whenever I have more than 1 cocktail at a party, I bum cigarettes. :whee: I still miss it. I miss the smell. I like to walk past smokers outside buildings. (It's perfume they should outlaw indoors.)

Guess the dolls picked up where I left off. As soon as I got some of those exquisite little cigarettes. Pretty much anybody who has separated fingers, and isn't out of scale with my mini-cigs, gets to smoke when their photoshows/outfits seem to demand it. Laika is the chain-smoker I used to be, except he prefers Marlboros (I was a Newport woman). Even Jimmy the Rei-tenshi has a hookah, since he can't separate his fingers & his mouth comes pre-puckered; that was mainly a crime of opportunity, because the Jimmy-sized hookah was just there. The dolly-smokers don't do it to rebel, or send a message or drive people away; they just smoke because that's what they do, or because that's what looks cool with that outfit right now. For a doll, the cigarette is a prop.

For a person, the cigarette is very very different. In Still Life With Woodpecker, Tom Robbins mused that we love smoking because it's the closest we humans can come to fire, to consume that which otherwise would consume us; a sort of constant reaffirmation of the Prometheus instinct. (Of course Robbins was probably smoking something much more potent than tobacco for breakfast, but I love him for that.)

    5. I don't smoke myself, and neither do my dolls.
I hate cigarettes, so I don't think my dolls need those to look cooler. It's not part of their personality.

I don't really mind other dolls smoking.. it's their personality, their owners choice.
But for my dolls.. it just wouldn't fit.

And my Varushka is a health addict anyway. ;)

    6. I don't personally smoke and dont' actually understand why other people do, and if you think you don't smell of it after a shower- you really do to osmeone who isnt used to cigarette smoke, but I still don't have any issue with a doll smoking. It's all part of a personality. My dolls aren't me, they don't have to like all the same stuff as me, so why not have one who smokes? I find it interesting that you can have a doll that dresses in a fashion you don't or may not even like, so the same could go with smoking.

Yes, it has terrible health implications, and not just for the smoker but those passive, it smells, and can look horrid on a woman who is pushing a buggy with a fag hanging out her mouth. But, it can also look very cool (dare I say it) with a guy in tight jeans, elbows on knees, contemplating the world with a cigarette. Or maybe i'm just really sexist that I think a sexy man can look even more sexy with a cigarette, but a beautiful woman is ruined with one?

I think the effect of the 50's fashion still has an effect on a lot of us ;)

    7. Yi has a cigarette, but he doesn't 'smoke'. It makes him feel 'cool/badass'

In general I like things that are cigarette shaped, minus the affect of totally turning your lungs to charcoal.
Like cinnamon sticks, eating them. Etc.
Little sticks, or blades of grass, the general idea of some thing at persons mouth is hot to me.
It seems to define the lips. Like 'ohey, whats that object.' then its like 'wow, nice lips'

      Or some thing :3

The thing with cigs is if the doll is just holding one, I instantly think of the doll raising its hand to its mouth.
Despite the cigarettes bad rep, the nature of the motion is hot.

    8. I have one doll that pretty much always has a cigarette in his hand, or at the very least a pack in his pocket. He also drinks heavily, and it shows in both his character's behavior and, eventually, will also show in his physical appearance. It's not because I think smoking is sexy or anything like that - quite the contrary! I don't like smoking, don't like the smell of it, and only if I have quite a lot of respect for someone will I spend any time near them while they're doing it. Aside from a few rather specific social situations (they're cops, they're undercover, they need information and people chat when standing around smoking...), my other dolls do not smoke, and regard it basically the same way as I do. And yet this one doll does. Why?

Because he's not a nice person. He's a criminal, a murderer, and smoking is part of his character. I collect these dolls as a writer, embodying characters I'm working with. He's a very, very flawed individual. The smoking is simply a visual reflection of one aspect of that.

    9. Ik think it add an extra meaning to the shoot, like the doll doesn't care where his life is heading; it almost brings something sad to the shoot...

      most of the time

    10. My guys smokes, because he's a smoker lol he likes it and enjoys it. Plus it's different as none of my other dolls smoke.

    11. there are no health risks to smoker dolls- they don't even have little resin lungs! so i doubt people with dolls who smoke even consider the health aspects of smoking. And dolls are a wish-fullfillment fantasy thing for most of us anyway, so you might even say this is a way for smokers to explore smoking and be a part of smoking culture without any danger to their health.

personally, I LOVE cigarettes. I DO think they make you look cool, and I think they're very sexy and glamorous. That said, I am fully aware of the devastating health effects, and that is why I do not smoke. In real life, smoking has benefits and consequences, and for many people the benefits do not outweigh the consequences. But with dollies, there are no consequences, so people can enjoy the benefits as they wish. :)

    12. Be careful what you say. There's already a similar thread floating around. ;)

I don't smoke, my doll doesn't smoke. I guess I'm the oddball: smoking isn't sexy or glamorous to me.

    13. Does your doll smoke? My current dolls "smoke" sometimes. But I have ordered a Resinsoul Bei (27 cm tiny), which is sculpted to look 9 or so years old. She will smoke, and drink.

If so, why? I like the way a cigarette looks in their sculpted hand. Sometimes I think that they look like they don't know what to do with their hands in pictures. The little one will smoke because her father smoked and she associates the smell with his memory. She will be a bit of a rebel, that kid your mother warned you about. One of my oldest and dearest friends started at the same age for the same reason. She would dream of cigarettes before she even started. She likes smoking very much and will probably never stop.

Does your doll smoke because you do? I have never smoked. Well, not true, I tried it once and thought it tasted like dirt. I had a friend who smoked Camels, and came to actually like the smell of Camels because I associated the smoke with him. When I was in the army, everyone smoked about every 10 minutes. It was a way to get out of work and socialize. Even though I didn't smoke, I would stand out there with them and hold a cigarette because I was not going to stay in the Motor Pool and do their work for them.

I sincerely believe that the government needs to stop banning smoking and putting sin taxes on cigarettes. People should be able to decide for themselves if they want to smoke or not smoke, and not have that decision made for them by a bunch of government busybodies.

    14. An original character of mine, who I will be making into doll form, smokes.

I personally hate cigarettes, I do have a friend who smokes but he's kind enough to do it away from me. :/

My character smokes because, thats just it, its part of his character. I'm sure this is the same with many other people's dolls. I'm not going to change his character at all, and I'm glad they make doll scale cigarettes *for this reason* it is a useful prop like many of the others we all see.

      My two cents~~

(Hopefully I made some sense, I'm pretty tired right now >.>')

    15. You're not odd. I don't find it remotely sexy or glamorous either. I think it's revolting, whether it's a human, a doll or a dog in a painting.

To all the smokers here also, if you're fine with your smoking, that's great and it's your choice and your right, but please don't come and stand beside me and smoke, or sit beside me and smoke, or lean over a wall and butt into my conversations and smoke :| I've already chosen my spot. You go and smoke your lungs out somewhere else, please.

    16. All my characters who are in a band will smoke. I work in the music industry and most of the bands and djs and many industry professionals that I have met/work with, smoke. I m usually the odd one out because I don't. Its just a representation of who they would be if they were actual humans rather than resin ones. :) None of my alt reality chara will smoke because I don't think that would be representative. Nuff said. ;)

    17. I don't see the big deal with it, I pretty much agree with everything Raisallie said. As for my dolls/characters some of them smoke, drink and/or shoot up other questionable substances. Am I a smoker/alcoholic/druggie? No, although I do enjoy the occasional black&mild with a cocktail. While I would never do a photo story centered around smoking/drinking, I might take a couple pics of them with cigarettes or drinks. I personally don't see the big deal with it. Its a DOLL with a PROP. I don't see how it would offend someone at all, people are taking this a bit too seriously imho.

Not to get off-topic but I wonder how some of these people who are anti-cigarette feel about dolls with guns? Its still "glamorizing" something bad, and guns definitely kill.

    18. Yeah, it's a doll with a prop, and I'd be just a likely to click the back button if the doll was wielding a gun or a syringe or a cigarette. I wouldn't leave any negative feedback for the person who put together the story just because it's not my personal preference, and I would definitely comment if there were any outstanding photographs (the photographer in me doesn't let me pass good artwork go by without comment), but I'd probably not mention the fact that the doll had shot someone, or smoked, or whatever, because it would be neither of those things that made me think "You know what? That shot is awesome" because it's not the prop that makes the photo, it's the photographer's skill that does that.

    19. I have a doll I'm planning and the character does smoke. He doesn't glamorize it and complains because he himself hates smoking and thinks its a disgusting habit, but he does it because he's addicted and too weak willed to stop and he's very high strung and smoking helps relax and calm him. I don't smoke, but some of my friends do. They don't push it on me and I don't push them to stop. I tell them I spend too much on my doll to afford to smoke anyway. My grandfather died of lung cancer from smoking, but he knew and accepted that and even said as much when people chided him for his cigars.

I'm not saying its good, but I'm not saying its bad if a doll has a cigarette prop just because people can't think for themselves. If a person in a movie smokes it suddenly becomes ok and cool is ridiculous and stupid. I know that's exactly how it happens, but I'm not going to stop doing things just because so many people are sheep and can't figure out for themselves with all the campaigns to promote reasons not to smoke that smoking is bad.

And dolls promoting smoking? I'd love to meet the person who, when told they've got cancer from smoking is going to point to a doll and say 'He made me do it'.

    20. I wondered too. ^^ I don't like it either because I hate cigarette, but I don't really care if dolls are posed with a cig. At least when I'll have my doll, she'll never smoke xD she'll not depend on something, haha.
