Does your doll "smoke"? Why?

Jan 18, 2006

    1. i think the imagery of cigarettes and smoking is very attractive...it's just a shame the smell and the health issues aren't :barf

my dolls don't smoke, but i have a lot of characters that do, because i want them all to be different in their own ways and have their own lives, personalities and hobbies. i don't smoke myself, have never tried a cigarette, but i don't care much for it.

    2. i think it certainly adds to the character of the doll, but smoking, to me, is a very disgusting habit. it almost killed my father, and is kind of still killing my granpa.......it's gross, but its not like dolls can die from it.....

    3. My dolls don't smoke simply because I don't smoke. I dislike it as a real habit that it wouldn't even enter my mind to have a doll do it. But...to each their own. I'm not offended when I see pics of 'smoking' dolls but it does surprise me given the backlash against smoking in the States. It would be interesting to do a poll and see if the majority of owners who have dolls that smoke are from countries where smoking is more acceptable like parts of Asia and the UK.

    4. I chainsmoked for 6 years, now my dolls just smoke for me ;)
I think its something to do with how I relate to my dolls: they wear things I would like to wear but dont, or have back stories or hairstyles I would like to have. Just because I dont smoke doesnt mean I wouldnt like to.
Like other things, the image of a smoker has always been an easy interpretation for elements of a character. A bad boy or a movie starlet for example. If a doll has scars, is pictured with a bottle of booze, a gun etc these are similar symbols of being a 'bad boy', its just an easy way to express a character or scene in a photoshoot. I personally do not take offense to dolls drinking, smoking or having guns, I just find it a problem if real people do ;) My dolls are not my role models.

    5. Here's something else to consider--even if the doll owner is from the US, their dolls' characters maybe from another country or another time period before the big anti-smoking push.

      Lol, very well put.

    6. Lol, actually my doll smokes >< :P

Well, Ashy was kinda just looking for something to take his mind off of his tragic story, so he picked up a cig, and voila~He's hooked ><

    7. I lost my mother to lung cancer, although it was un-related to smoking, when I was a child I watched my great-grandmother die from smoke caused cancer.
Do I smoke? No, and unless he's in costume neither does Shin, I don't advocate smoking, but its a real life choice that people make, and that will be reflected in my dolls just like it is in my photography.

    8. They smoke. All of them, even the ones that are not home yet (well, the child one is an exception). Because I'm not north american, i come from a country where 80% of the population smokes and it is considered to be normal for both men and women. (It's not Japan, but it's not far off in terms of cigarette vending machine every 5 feet ^^) We even have a saying that if a man does not smoke or drink, he's either sick or a trecherous bastard. :)

As to smoking being "disgusting" - strictly north american thing (and N.A. it NOT the center of the world, for the record), so keep it there... maybe I find homosexuality disgusting, or boys in girls clothing, or emo, or goths and so on... But i have more tact not to bring it up and bitch abut it here. :)

P.S. No, i do not smoke.

    9. If I ever get my male character in BJD form, he will smoke a pipe, and the occasional cigarette. It's all apart of his character. He's quite aware of what it does to him... Since, you know, he's a doctor.

I did that for the sake of irony. But also because the pipe, to me, gives him a sense of maturity. And, as humans, we do many things that might be hazardous to our health... For the sake of living in the moment. It's not about how I feel about smoking. It's about realism. And, maybe other doll owners do it to show that even perfection has it's quirks. Since most consider their dolls perfect. At least, that's my view on it.

    10. I personally detest smoking but one of the characters that I am planning to make into doll form soon, does.

The reason she smokes is to emphasize her rebellious image. The character is only seventeen so she's breaking the law, something she does a lot of. She also engages in a crapload of risky behavior, and smoking is like first on the checklist.

    11. None of my dolls will smoke, largely because they're all representing existing fictional characters that hail from a world where cigarettes are unconventional and near impossible to obtain.

If I were working from a story I'd written in which one of the represented characters smoked, then yes- I'd include the cigarette with the doll, though I personally don't support the habit or encourage it in any way. It would be purely to keep the doll in character with its literary likeness, and even then I doubt I'd ever include the cigarette in a photoshoot unless it was a photostory in which it was needed.

    12. Huh... despite the fact that I hate smoking, but find it ridiculously cool looking, none of my characters do... probably due to the fact that they all need to be in top physical condition ALL the time, one of them is in love with a crazy nature buff, and another one is in love with a neat freak lol. XD

    13. I'm not opposed to doll's smoking. It won't hurt them, they don't have lungs. Sure, it glamorizes smoking--the dolls are beautiful, they could make anything appealing--but what isn't these days? Celebrities smoke, the hot guy at the bar smokes, there will always be someone beautiful doing something "bad" for all to see.

Besides, this isn't exactly a hobby with a large base of impressionable children. From what I have encountered, a small minority of BJD owners are under 18 and, by the teen years, they have long been exposed to the "glamor" of smoking and all the claims against it and have created an opinion on whether or not they wish to partake. It's pretty safe to say, we're all adults here, with the ability to form our own opinions, and a doll smoking isn't going to make one of us seriously considering taking up the habit. :3

    14. I don't smoke, my dolls don't smoke and if I went to a meet and someone posed one of my dolls with a dolly-sized cigarette, I would be livid. I don't find it unreasonable to dislike smoking, it smells awful, it does nasty things to your body whether you're the one doing the smoking, or whether you have the misfortune to stand nearby someone who is smoking. I see no appeal whatsoever and I quickly exit situations where there is smoking going on, even if that just happens to be a BJD photostory.

I'm not condemning the legitimate right of an adult human being to choose what to put in their bodies or not, but it makes me uncomfortable when dolls are made to do it. Hey, it might be part of Johnny's character to smoke, but you make his character because he is your possession, his character exists nowhere but in your mind and the story you create for him. If you are vehemently against smoking in your day-to-day life...why are you ok with your doll being a smoker and therefore continuing the myth that smoking is cool? This is a genuine question too, I would like to know the motivation behind dolly-smokers when the owner is anti-smoking!

    15. I used to smoke when I was younger. I gave it up because it was making my already serious health problem much worse. I don't like cigarettes any more and I hate the smell of smoke. I am pretty much anti smoking.
I do have one doll who smokes. It's nothing to do with the making smoking cool. I just find it suits his personality and his story. He is quite a timid and frightened guy who gets upset very easily. When he gets emotional he turns into a demon, therefore he smokes cigarettes to dampen his nerves and keep him calm. The other dolls always complain about his habit though

    16. None of my dolls smoke or will ever smoke. Gavin probaby had one once, but hated it and will never do it again. Cigarettes are not allowed in the Academy.

    17. Some of them enjoy a nice cigarrette and sometimes a cigar. Some of my dolls are chain smokers, whereas others are just casual smokers. Having over 20 dolls, it is impossible to keep a few from being more adventurous.

      ~Gus

    18. I used to smoke but don't anymore...but Spencer, my SDF Abadon does. I blame MTV and all that rap music.

    19. I have many characters, some of whom will eventually be in doll form, who smoke.

I do not smoke and will not ever smoke. I can't stand the smell of cigarette smoke.

I don't have characters who smoke to make it seem cool or anything like that, though I will admit that there are some people who sure make it look cool. Some of my characters smoke because my characters are as different as people are. Some smoke, some don't. Some have other addictions and problems, some are optimistic little balls of fun.

Just because you're against smoking but have a doll/character who is a smoker doesn't mean you are trying to continue the idea that smoking is cool.

I'm sure there are many authors out there who do not smoke but have characters who do in their stories. There's nothing wrong with that. It's just a portrayal of something that is real. Some people smoke, some people don't. I don't think it has anything to do with it being cool or someone wanting to make it look cool by putting it in a pretty doll's hand.

Sometimes it's just part of who that character is.
