Doll Carrying Bags...Buy or Make or Convert!

Jun 10, 2007

    1. I just got a Knitting Needle bag today, from a Cath Kidston store (UK). It was on sale for 12,50 GBP so I thought I could finally have a cute bag to carry my dolls. It fits an MSD. SD fits with the legs bent. I will also use it to carry Blythe dolls.
They also have a very cute suitcase for children that can hold an SD in sitting position + some smaller dolls. Both alternatives are for local outings, I think. For air travel I would use (in fact I have used) a small and sturdy carry-on suitcase.

    2. I have a question: Is it possible to use the foam part of the Iplehouse boxes to use for other transporting purposes? Or does it simply fall apart when removed from the box? Because then I could use a pretty normal sports bag and put the foam part in.

    3. c.stanci: I love that bag! :D What a wonderful find!

    4. I've never bought a doll bag, nor have I made/converted my own...although I'd like to convert something. :D

I have an MSD and a tiny, and for the tiny I was thinking of getting a lunchbox or something and glueing some padding in there or something. I don't have plans for my MSD but if I were going to a meet or something, I'd most likely just take my tiny.

    5. Well I have enough problems with funds as it is > < but I have an alternative =D

When I first got my laptop, it came with a bag. Back then, it was only used for college stuff and stuff and when I first got Triya, I was given a bag to carry her around. It was wonderful since it was big enough to fit a couple MSDs in as well as some YoSDs [ I'd imagine at least x3 ] But when Cecil came along, he was too big for the bag and putting him into his sleeping back was tough > < I now put a cushion inside my old college bag and fit them all in there =D it really works well too ^ ^

      Alas, when I get Earl-Caesar. . . Things are going to be a tight squeeze ^ ^;;

I have plenty of big bags here to use so buying one is the least of my worries ^o^ as long as they're safe and sound, it really shouldn't matter if the bag isn't specifically for BJDs ^ ^

    6. I usually just carry my dolls in whatever purse or backpack I'm taking with me. I always take the precaution of wrapping Tacori or Sonya in a kerchief or doll pillow before they go into the bag (I forgot one time and some how Tacori magically got purple all over his face and body! And i didn't even have my purple ink pen in my bag!!)
I also have a homemade violin case my boyfriend gave me, that I use for bigger trips (like on vacation or to my grandma's house) It's made of solid wood, has a sturdy brass latch and handle, is lined with satin and a doll pillow, and is more protective than a purse. Oddly enough, it's a perfect fit for my two MSDs lying curled into each other or my sister's chubby SD lying in a fetal position. (I say "or" because its not all three in one case)
IMO real doll bags aren't worth it. I mean, maybe they're better for multiple dolls, and in no way am I bashing them, I'm just saying if you have a simple JanSport backpack and a pillow (one you sleep with at night) with a pillow case your set.

    7. If I bring my pukipuki pongpong somewhere, she will always go in her FL box and then into either my backpack or handbag.
I also have a Totoro bag, which is pretty padded, and I've been planning to use it as a carrier for her also. But I like her being scure in her box, in the bag she would move around to much I think..

I don't know what I am going to do when I get a MSD, maybe I'll make or buy some padded sleeve or something.

      c.stansi, that's just perfect!

    8. We were cleaning out an ex room mate's room (he had just moved out) and I found an older airsoft cloth case. It has straps in it and it has hard structure inside as well as decent padding!! It is not quite 65 cm long on the inside but I think I might be able to squeeze a 70cm boy in there. A bit more padding and I think this may be perfect!!

I will have to get pictures of it tomorrow!!!

    9. Seeing as how my dolls are super tinies, I don't have much trouble finding a transportation solution for them. I grabbed a bunch of these little cell phone/ipod holders at a work related convention I went to and my tinies fit in there perfectly. I can just stuff them in to those cell phone holders and throw them in my bag/purse and not worry about them getting banged up in my bag.

I can see larger doll owners having to worry about/plan transportation for their dolls, though. Some bags/carrying cases are very cool!

    10. I don't have doll yet,but when/if I get one I plan on making him a coffin shaped carrying case.

    11. I'm thinking about getting an SD doll, a Bobobie Apollo. I think I will end up getting him, so when I do, I was wondering if a messenger bag type briefcase with extra padding or something would work. I know he would have to sit, but is it a good idea? Does anyone have suggestions for this plan?

    12. I was at Walmart the other day and came across a Jeep Diaper Bag. It's perfect. It's got pockets for clothes and stuff, and fits my SD boy if he's sitting down as well as my yosd girl, AND my DSLR. It's a clamshell shape, so it opens up nice and wide. It also nice and sturdy, with some thick wiring to help it hold it's shape. It's about $20, but I think it's worth it. It even comes with a cell phone holder, and a changing pad, which I just use for extra padding on the bottom. Plus, it's all black and looks more like an overnight back or a really big laptop case, so the only way people will know it's a diaper bag is if they read the little logo at the bottom.

    13. I keep thinking I want to make one (some) and design them myself. Then I remember that I'm lazy and think maybe I should buy one.

I desperately need a bigger camera bag so maybe if I got one I could use my current camera bag as a doll carrier for smaller dolls.

I have OT dolls that I wrapped in a towel and put into a big bag my friend made and carried them that way. I would never do that to a BJD though so I have to find some kind of solution if I ever want to take them anywhere.

I know I could make what I want and I'm not worried about it being sturdy because I make bags already so I'm fairly confident in my skills (and also quite humble) but it's going from saying to doing that causes the problem!

    14. I want to get myself a Coolcat bag to carry my boy...soon to be two boys in. But seeing as the bag is $45 and shipping is $50+ I've been looking for an alternative until I can afford the Coolcat. The other day I was at Target looking at their backpacks when I got to the messenger bag section. Some of the bags were meant to hold a laptop(I assume) because the back of the bag and the divider on the inside were both padded, nicely padded I might add. I'm curious if that would be safe to carry the dolls in, as long as you stick a couple extra pillows in with them of course. You could also put a piece of cardboard in the bottom to keep it flat to the bottom wouldn't sag. I'm definitly going to pick one up and try it out.

    15. I am in the process of converting a shoe box into a nice carrier for my Marc. XD
It's in the painting stages, then I will line it with padding and then I need to work a handle/strap onto it. :3

    16. Currently I only have one doll bag and that's the black leather one that came with my Iplehouse Ryushin. It fits him and all of my SD size dolls perfectly.

However, it only fits one doll at a time so I also have a vintage (early 70's if you consider that vintage) Samsonite suitcase. It's super cute and pea green and just the right size to hold an SD and MSD plus some clothes and accessories.

    17. Later on, if I find that I want to take mine places, I am going to the store and picking up an awesome bag. There is a store with suitcase-ish bags, but they are hand held like a purse. He would fit in their great. Or a rolling back that is not angled oddly. Wouldn't want him bumping around.

    18. I get the same way. I want to make something and then I realize "It'll never happen." xD

    19. I simply converted my violin case into a bjd carrier instead. It works wonders.

    20. The Hubby and I were in Toronto for his b'day and we stopped in to the Toronto Hemp Company on Yonge Street. Imagine my surprise when I saw something there that makes an excellent doll carrier. (click on pics for larger views)

The doll in the bag is a BBD and 62cm. He juuuuuust fits in this bag (it's 24"). it's extremely well padded (it's actually to carry a glass bong) and has 2 small pockets on the inside. It was $37.95CAN and there was about 5 or 6 different colours/patterns available at the store. They also had larger and smaller bags, too.

I've also converted a purse I bought at a local second hand shop for $4 to be a tiny carrier. I can fit my RS Bao's in it lying down or they can both sit up and I can fit 4, 28cm dolls in the bag. It has a ton of pockets and the handle is a good length.
