Doll Carrying Bags...Buy or Make or Convert!

Jun 10, 2007

    1. I bought a Nike bag that's meant for baseball equipment and bats and I use that for my boys. It's pretty spacious, so it's not as snug as strictly doll bags would be, but I fill up the spaces with the pillows that came in their boxes and that works pretty well. There are also some nice pockets for clothing, wigs, etc. I imagine you could fit 4+ SDs in it if you wanted, and some smaller dolls as well, and it's probably long enough for 70 cms as well, but I don't have one to test that theory with. My 2 SDs and Puki fit with plenty of room to spare!

    2. Ivy seems to have taken over my Transformers messenger bag. She fits in there quite nicely seated.

    3. I keep my Ju in her Resin Soul carrying case. I'm glad the previous owners kept the case, I'm quite fond of it. ^_^ But I don't think I'd get another, because they are so expensive (unless they are a freebie with the doll).

Some of the ones I want to get are smaller sizes, so for them I'd kinda like to make a special case. We will see. If I find a nice one I like though, I'll probably buy it, if it's not too much. I'd prefer to keep them separate rather than having them all in one thing, especially since I don't plan on taking more than 1 at a time to meets/conventions/etc. at the moment.

    4. I bought a rolling suitcase at one point, to carry 6 minis easily to a meet. Can't quite find a taller case, though, for 60-65cm dolls that isn't also very thick front-to-back -- mostly with additional pockets/sections I don't need. The search continues, though --

    5. Costco had the greatest tall carrying bag w/handle for rolls of Christmas paper. A large SD box fits in one perfectly. Three sides have clear plastic windows to see which doll box is inside. The top has a small zipper compartment for bows and ribbon that work great for shoes, wigs, etc. Amazon carries them sometimes also. If you do a Bing search it's call "Rubbermaid Wrap' N Craft Gift-Wrapping Organizer". Approx measurements 9x9x34...they're super...bought one for all my dolls!

    6. I found the greatest carry bag for MSDs at Walmart this evening.

(Just ignore the fact that no one has a face mask/protection on right now. ;))

The lining is actually dark blue, but I threw some fleece in there for extra padding. The sides are actually quilted, though.

The best part is it was only $14. :D

    7. My Personal Experience!!
I found this "travel Bag" in a CHinese STore near home!
its price was only 10 Euro so I bought it for transporting my 2 MSD girls without wrapping them or using Protective mask for the face up!
This is a pic of the bag. if you want to see more, look my little photostory here!

    8. Hi! ^_^
The last week I made a travel and I carried with me my two MSD size BJD.
In this occasion, I put them into a carrier bag for computer.
Now I'm searching for a carrier bag more convenient for the dolls...
How do you travel with your dolls?
Do you know a place in internet where I can find one of them in Europe?
      Thanks!

PS: I've searched in Decatholn for fishing bag but there isn't in ideal size...

    9. Look on ebay for tripod bags, my friend has one and it works well for them! You might have to sew pillows/use the ones your dolls came with to line it, but it's way cheaper than buying a 50 dollar doll bag! They have different sizes as well. The 27inch would work well for msd, I got the 31 inch because I have both sizes. :)

-I got my bag for 18 dollars including shipping ;)

    10. I whipped up a quick single doll bag from remnants of vinyl and satin for a panel I gave on the subject at a doll con. It turned out all right for a first time, almost no pattern attempt. I think I might try a bigger one next time, with zipper pouches on the outside and restraint bands in the lining for multiple dolls. I might sew piping into some seams for more structure, too. All that takes is planning and my To-Do list is pretty long at this point. Still, it's something to mull over in my quieter moments.

    11. I don't have a bag yet, but my friend has a couple. A coffin shaped one and just a normal doll carrier. They hold her 1/3 Angell-Studio dolls and I have never seen them damaged while moving. :) Not many pockets from what I remember, but the coffin is cool!

    12. I have one, made bij my self and a very large pink suitcase with wheels.
The self-made case is made from a box in SD size. Covered with furniture fabric at the outside and padded fleece at the inside. It can hold two 70 cm dolls.
For the suitcase I use two big pillows and it can hold 4 SD and two Tiny's and a lot of clothes or something like that.

    13. I bought myself one of the Volks carrier bags a while back after looking at other brands and also DIY options and don't regret it - it's really well made and has huge pockets inside. I like the the zippers function from both side (2 zipper heads) and that they open all the way down to the side so that the bag opens up completely. I especially like that the inside is lined in white (not black, like most bags out on the market) because I own a dollfie dream and don't want to risk staining with dark fabrics.

I think it depends what size dolls you would be transporting because I don't think you'd need a big carrier bag for tinies ;)

    14. I recently purchased a bag at a thrift store that I think was some sort of sales bag for bath & body works type product. But, It is fantastic.

It has several smaller bags that velcro to the inside of the larger bag. One is long and works perfectly for my small size dolls and then the other bags are great for the wigs and tons of clothes.

I added Padding to the long skinny bag and I can fit two yosd sized doll in it. I still need to cover the padding with fleece of satan though. For only $3.00 I can't complain.

Pics can be seen at links below. They are big images so you can see all the stuff.

Sorry the pics aren't that great. I only have a point and shoot camera. :(

    15. I use a hanging locker bag my dad gave me, it's long and slim like a doll carrier, and after I put a million pillows in it I can still fit three 1/3 dolls in it. It's pretty massive, but at it fits extra accessories and stuff. I've been thinking about converting one of the side pockets into a spot for my yo, too

    16. I think I am going to go with convert. I have a box that is roughly the same size as the doll I have ordered. I will take some time over the next month or so turning it into a secure way for her to travel. I will pad the inside and use ribbons to secure her.

I like the idea of a solid case so that she can't be crushed. I have some awesome rainbow cord to make a shoulder strap.

    17. I am using a very versatile IKEA Family trolley/cabin bag. It has padded backpack straps and a wheel device, so you can transport it both ways. A zip-on smaller backpack is also included, with an organizer section with lots of compartments in it. I only have to make some kind of padding, as the main section is unpadded.

Originally this trolley was bought for me, right now my 60 cm-boy has occupied it.

However, I bought many years ago a hardplastic backpack as used in the movie "Charlie's Angels II" (I just had to have it at that time). It has a somewhat strange shape, and thus I have not used it much. As it is very protective and quite long, I may have one further look at it. Perhaps I can convert it into something useful...

    18. I wound up giving in and buying one when I was temporarily 'in the money'-- it was inexpensive enough for a doll carrier, and it was faux-leather instead of canvas so the material didn't bother me. And it's pink, which both Vince and my incoming MNF boy are cool with...

But I'm definitely making my own carrier for my LTF who's also on layaway... possibly converting if I find a cheap suitable bag in the right size, but probably whipping up from scratch if I have any quilt batting left after making furniture.

    19. I have 2 carrier bags for SD dolls 60-65cm. One is a Laidoll bag bought on ebay 4 years ago and the other is a Volks bought last month. I like them both. They have lots of space inside for stuffing insulation during winters and during summers, I can squeeze 2 dolls into each of the bags. The bags are light and the Volks bag has plenty of pockets inside. The Laidoll bag is now old having traveled with me to many places as I travel for pleasure and work. The zipper is not working very well but still functional. I'm considering giving it away to anyone who needs a bag. However, I'm fond of the memories and still cannot give it up. I am using the Volks bag now.

4 years ago, someone gave me a violin case and I converted it but it was too small. Can fit only 1 SD13 size doll with no space for stuffing insulation in winter. My doll hated it because the cover slams shut on his nose.

    20. It depends on where I'm going as to what I will use to tote dolls, but for my Minifee horde I can fit twelve of them into a 19" wheeled Pullman suitcase. Towel on bottom, layer of dolls, towel, layer of dolls, towel, layer of dolls, towel. Just like making lasagna.

For most meets, though, I don't need to take the full complement, and I've begun using my Vera Bradley large and small duffels. They're brightly colored, so I always know which ones are mine, they are quilted (nothing hard to scrape against a doll). While they do get heavy if I have more than about 4 or 5 SD+ in there, I can get dolls as large as Soom SG in there with little problem. I bend the dolls at their knees as far as they will go and lay them in there. (My dolls always wear face masks when I take them anywhere.) Usually I can get two large dolls per layer, placed in opposite directions. Minis and tinies can be put in there with them as well. I even can get my SD16 girls in there on the bottom. Their knees don't bend as far as the others, but I lay them in there and basically make a rectangle with them, which leaves space for tinies between them. Then a towel and other dolls go on top of them. Dolls dressed in floofy clothes also make for good padding. :D
