Doll Clothes and Accessories made from Fur and Leather

Nov 18, 2010

    1. I don't think that animals should be killed specifically for their fur or hide, but I think that if an animal is being killed then it is just respectful (and more economical) to use as many parts of it as possible. Meat for food, hide and fur for clothing... Bones can even be a useful material.

I think sustainably farmed, free range animals who are humanely killed should be used for these purposes. I'm against recreational hunting in many forms as there tends to be a lot of inexperienced people who's poor shooting causes animals to die slowly and painfully, and the main purpose is 'fun' rather than necessity or usefulness.

Also obviously I'm against the byproducts of endangered animals both because of conservation reasons and because it's illegal.

So yes, I would potentially buy leather and fur products for my dolls (and myself) but I like to know the sources of the materials.

    2. I am not bothered by the wearing of leather and fur. That said, I personally will not actively search for such garments to wear, and I won't go looking for it for my doll.

However, just as I don't care if I see someone on the street wearing it, if I were at a doll meet and saw a doll wearing fur or leather, it wouldn't make a difference to me.

    3. Anyone who has leather furniture, boots, jackets, gloves, or anything along those lines shouldnt complain about leather doll clothes. I think that's completely hypocritical. Also, there is no problem with fur, in my opinion. I eat the rabbit, why is it insulting to use the fur? hell, I'm even the sort to use bones as well.
Currently, Im making use of buffalo teeth, elk leather, bird bones, and coyote claws in an outfit Im making for a doll. Yay eBay. If people in America want to kill coyotes because they eat their chickens, Id rather use the parts of the animals for something rather than having their bodies rot elsewhere.
Im also a scavenger. I live in BC, and the forest is my back yard. Im not above harvesting from a few skeletons of deer/birds/raccoons/ etc that have been omnomnom'd by other foresty creatures.
Call me lassaiz-faire, but people argue too much about things that are not even worth arguing over. Would I be upset if I found a farm where minks or chinchilla's were being skinned alive? yes. Why? because it's a bloody waste of the rest of the animal. Sell the claws and bones as well. Eat the meat.
      Yupp.

    4. Would you be insulted or shocked to see a doll wearing clothes made from animal byproduct (furs and leathers and such)?
-Leather doesn't bother me, but fur does.

Does it make a difference if the byproducts came from animals we eat (cows, rabbits, pigs, sheep, etc.)?
Would it make a difference if you bought the leather/fur from a crafts store (like Hobby Lobby or Michael's)?

-No it doesn't bother me if it's a byproduct. I have a problem with animals being killed strictly for their hides and no other parts being used.

Would it make a difference if you bought the byproduct straight from the distributor, whom you knew to use all parts of the animal?

-It would be the ONLY way I would purchase any type of fur.

    5. Would you be insulted or shocked to see a doll wearing clothes made from animal byproduct (furs and leathers and such)? No more than feeling sad for the animal. I don't buy leather, wool, or fur because of the cruelty involved in the industries.

Does it make a difference if the byproducts came from animals we eat (cows, rabbits, pigs, sheep, etc.)? Would it make a difference if you bought the leather/fur from a crafts store (like Hobby Lobby or Michael's)?

Not to me, because at the end of the day they are still killed.

Would it make a difference if you bought the byproduct straight from the distributor, whom you knew to use all parts of the animal?

      Nope.

    6. to the wool one: most creatures used for wool/ thread etc are not killed, and are actually treated pretty good because the healthier they are, the healthier their coats.
also, it's darn cute watching the Alpacas across the road get all poofy and then BOOM naked the next day, with only poofy little heads. *giggle*

    7. I'm against fur, since fur is often taken from animals in cruel methods. I have no issue with leather though. Leather is a good material.

    8. A lot of animals are treated well, and aren't hurt for their wool, but that is usually on a small scale. I have a problem with large scale wool operations which practice things like mulesing (cutting off skin from the rear) without pain relief which is cruel in my opinion.

    9. I don't see a problem with using as much of an animal as possible, hide, fur, feathers, bones, meat, etc., especially livestock, for whatever purpose, be it for me or my dolls. I object to hunting or trapping animals for just furs or feathers, and/or pushing said species towards extinction. It's wasteful and inconsiderate of Nature's diversity. I'm not terribly crazy about raising fur bearing animals. It's just so sad, but it's a stopgap from destroying the wild population. Do I make a habit of salvaging and using old fur and feathers? Absolutely! Why compound the problem by wasting what another person has already discarded?

    10. I'm ok with it I used to live in Alaska and in the winter I would see people wearing lots of fur, but for my dolls I stick to fux-fur and fux-leather

    11. I have no problem with it, so long as it's from an animal whose other parts are definitely going to be used -- like in the meat industry, for instance. I would never be okay with a doll having an outfit made of mink fur, or fox fur, or something of the like (unless I suppose it came from roadkill or other already dead animals, but that would be hard to prove, especially if you bought it from someone who made the outfit).

    12. I love animals. I wouldn't yell at the person who uses leather on their dolls, I'd just not use it myself. I'm even uncomfortable using mohair wigs.

    13. Would you be insulted or shocked to see a doll wearing clothes made from animal byproduct (furs and leathers and such)? I wouldn’t be shocked any more than I am when people do the same. Which isn’t at all. ‘Cause people just do that. It grosses me out but I wouldn’t be surprised.

Does it make a difference if the byproducts came from animals we eat (cows, rabbits, pigs, sheep, etc.)?
No. It’s all the same to me. I’m a Buddhist and have been a vegetarian since I was a child and learned where meat comes from. I would no sooner put fur and leather on my doll than I would put flesh in my mouth.

Would it make a difference if you bought the leather/fur from a crafts store (like Hobby Lobby or Michael's)? Would it make a difference if you bought the byproduct straight from the distributor, whom you knew to use all parts of the animal? Again, it’s all the same to me. An animal has been killed. It’s dead at a human’s hands, whatever parts of it are ‘used’ by that person will not change that fact or make it any better or more 'right' in my eyes.

    14. I'm a big animal lover, so I wouldn't buy fur or leather for a doll. If it was like wool or something where they are not killing an animal then that's fine, but I don't agree with it. But I wouldn't be mad at somebody if they did buy that stuff. I wouldn't like it, but I wouldn't yell at them or anything xD

    15. I'm vegetarian so I do my best to avoid using these particular types of animal by-product for myself, so the same would of course apply to my doll. I wouldn't be shocked if I saw someone else's doll in fur or leather, since they're both fairly common materials, but of course, in a perfect world I'd prefer for people to use faux replacements instead. It's up to each individual, so I wouldn't force that opinion on anyone, of course.

If someone does decide to incorporate leather or fur into their own or their doll's wardrobe, it would really be nice if they made sure to source it responsibly from manufacturers who treat their animals ethically and with care, and use as much of the animal as possible. I don't think there's any reason not to make the effort to do this, though I suppose there are people out there who'd rather save money or just aren't concerned with the issue.

That said, I'm very happy to use wool and the like if the animals are treated kindly and no harm comes to them in the harvesting. :>

    16. You can't tell from the photo whether the leather is real or not. The same goes with fur. Usually companies make clothes for dolls from artificial materials. So, i don't see any reasons for panic. If not to mention, that production of artificial materials is more dangerous for nature, than using natural materials, Greenpeace can sleep safely and soundly.

    17. Leather doesn't bother me when it's cow leather, because if the cow is American, we typically sell all of it's other body parts like skin, bone, fat, and meat when we harvest the leather. Therefore, most stuff doesn't go to waste. To me, it makes all the difference if all of the animal is being used.
I'm such an animal person - I grew up saving birds and mice from my cats& going to the pound to spend time with all the critters. There are so many factors that determine what is and isn't okay to me when it comes to using animal byproducts.

    18. Would you be insulted or shocked to see a doll wearing clothes made from animal byproduct (furs and leathers and such)?
      No.
Does it make a difference if the byproducts came from animals we eat (cows, rabbits, pigs, sheep, etc.)?
For me it does. I love my leather jackets, and they are cow or pig skin.

    19. Would you be insulted or shocked to see a doll wearing clothes made from animal byproduct (furs and leathers and such)?
Not at all, I have leather lying around that I'm gonna use for clothes and accessories for my dolls (to those who as why real leather, it's because I always prefer the real deal and these pieces that I have are too small to do anything human-sized with anyway, so why not treat my dolls to it?). And I never have a problem with the use of leather or fur in itself (I do have a problem with the industry, yes, of course I do, we should treat the animals with respect, but we are omnivores, killing animals is natural for us, as long as we do it in a natural way).

Does it make a difference if the byproducts came from animals we eat (cows, rabbits, pigs, sheep, etc.)?
Not really. As long as it's not an endagered species, and as long as the animal - whatever animal it is - wasn't raised under too terrible circumstances (I do try to mak sure, but it's not always easy), it's all the same to me.

Would it make a difference if you bought the leather/fur from a crafts store (like Hobby Lobby or Michael's)?
No, don't see why it would...

Would it make a difference if you bought the byproduct straight from the distributor, whom you knew to use all parts of the animal?
Yes! This is the ideal, of course, I always hope that this is the case with all leather, fur, meat and so on that I buy... if I could make sure of this all the time, I would.

    20. Leather/Fur doesn't bother me at all. My biggest concern would be: "I hope they lined it so that black leather isn't staining their doll!"
