Doll Clothes and Accessories made from Fur and Leather

Nov 18, 2010

    1. As long as it's not from endangered animals, then I don't have a problem with it

    2. In general, I don't really like fur. I have my great grandmother's mink coat and a few of her foxtail stoles. They are in the ceder chest and never ever worn. I will confess to a raccoon tail on my Steampunk outfits, but it's fake and I made sure of that before I bought it.

Leather is one thing. I like leather. I'm okay with leather. Probably because I eat cow. But pleather an faux leather is just as good. But I absolutely don't think I'd put real fur on my boy. There is enough fake fur that is just as good out there.

On other people's dolls though, I'm not really bothered by it. I'm not PETA. I won't dump red paint over your pretty doll because they're in fur. It's your doll. You can dress them how you want to.

    3. Would you be insulted or shocked to see a doll wearing clothes made from animal byproduct (furs and leathers and such)?
      No.

Does it make a difference if the byproducts came from animals we eat (cows, rabbits, pigs, sheep, etc.)?
Yes. It does. Even though we can never know exactly if the animal, indeed, was eaten, we can still hope that it was not simply wasted. I don't like the waste of ressources, expecially if it involves life. To be more precise, this is why I think leather and fur of animals that are killed anyway to become our food shoud be used at all - to not let it go to waste. Throwing it away and making our clothing from "vegan" material might be an option when the production of this vegan clothing products doesn't involve mineral oil anymore. And sadly, quite a lot of modern "vegan" clothing, shoes etc. are made from mineral oil, and not from recycled materials or simply cotton or linen. And mineral oil (which is the main ingredient of polyurethan resin, from which our precious dolls are made, by the way, too), with all those accidents in production in transport, brings death to several hundreds, thousands, millions of animals. So which one is really better?

Would it make a difference if you bought the leather/fur from a crafts store (like Hobby Lobby or Michael's)?
      No.

Would it make a difference if you bought the byproduct straight from the distributor, whom you knew to use all parts of the animal?
Probably, if I knew of such a distributor near by. But where to find someone who is a farmer, a butcher, a skinner, and also sells their products, in our age of specialization?

Or is it all the same to you?
No, it is not the same. Like I mentioned above, I strongly prefer to use - and only use in the clothing made by me - products from sheep, cows, pigs and rabbits, domestic animals that usually also end up as food. I use fake fur and fake leather sometimes too, and also other synthetical materials - regardless of mineral oil and such. To me, one is not better than the other. Cotton, hemp and linen, as well as wool that is shaved from the sheep or goat without killing it are my favs anyway.

    4. Would you be insulted or shocked to see a doll wearing clothes made from animal byproduct (furs and leathers and such)?
I don't like it, I don't wear them myself and I sure as heck won't be buying them for my dolls, but if other people want to use them then that's fine and they can do that. There's no point in getting offended by that stuff, if I hated everyone that wore different things or ate different things I'd hate more or less anyone, so I don't hold grudges based on this stuff. But I was surprised when I found out that doll things were sometimes made from these things.

Does it make a difference if the byproducts came from animals we eat (cows, rabbits, pigs, sheep, etc.)?
I don't eat them or use ANY of their byproducts so to me it does make a difference, but I'm not going to try and force other people to avoid things just because I don't like it, I'm not PETA after all xD

Would it make a difference if you bought the leather/fur from a crafts store (like Hobby Lobby or Michael's)?
Unless that means it's fake then no, if it's real fur or real leather I avoid it plain and simple.

Would it make a difference if you bought the byproduct straight from the distributor, whom you knew to use all parts of the animal?
It'd make me feel better if a person who was using the byproduct did, but again I just wouldn't do it, ever.

Or is it all the same to you?
If the leather or fur is real then it's real, an animal was killed to make it (totally unnecessarily IMO) and that's it and I won't buy it or use it or touch it. The end.

    5. I personally don't have any issue with leather and the only issues I have with fur is if its from cruel distributors & companies. I definitely don't support animal hunting for their fur/ivory etc. but I would like to get my MSD a real fox tail as a part of his persona BUT it'll only come from a Native American seller who is cruelty free and uses ALL the parts of the animal. I don't feel bad about it when someone who loves and respects the animals is the one using their hide. So, no I don't judge others based on anything their dolls wear and I don't really care where it comes from as long as they aren't being fur-crazy Cruella de Vil's XD

    6. I have no problem whatsoever with leather, either for myself or for my dolls. It really doesn't matter to me where the leather is purchased. I have no problem with feathers, either.

Fur, on the other hand, is something I would not purchase for myself or my dolls. There are lots of really nice synthetics out there that look just as good, cost less, and don't require the raising and killing of animals specifically for their fur alone.

I would not be offended or shocked if someone else dressed their doll in fur things. Everyone is entitled to their own choices and preferences. Fur is just not for me.

    7. Leather is not something that bothers me, fur however is a little different as it is not always sourced humanely and can be sourced from animals that are endangered in their own habitat which is I think is just plain wrong. If it was leather I would prefer if it was a byproduct of the meat industry but I know thats not always the case.
I wouldn't be bothered if I saw these products on someone else's doll however because that's there choice not mine.

    8. If they wear fur/leather themselves, I don't see what's stopping people from outfitting their dolls in the same...

    9. For me this is a BIG NO NO! No no no no no!!!! Fake things should not wear the skin of a once real being!

    10. No problems whatsoever. The animal's dead already, if its carcass doesn't end up as part of some doll outfit, some human will wear it. No matter where you buy it from, the fact remains that it's real, it doesn't bother me either way.

    11. well, leather its quite common to be used for clothes and all kind of stuff, so i wont really be shocked or something if i see a doll wearing it, but i do prefer to avoid it as much as possible for either me or my dolls.
but for some mayor reason i simply cant like the idea of fur being used, at least not the kind of fur items that involve the actual animal being killed.

    12. I am ok with fur or leather being used, so long as it is not an endangered animal. I also find it odd that some people are against fur, but ok with leather because they are both from animal skin. (Leather is not just cows, btw. It can be from stingrays, fish, kangaroo, crocodiles or other not so usually seen animals).
But like I said, I am perfectly fine with both being used. If people are afraid of the source for the fur, you can find suppliers who hunt the animals and use every last bit so nothing is wasted.

    13. Hasn't really ever bothered me. As long as the material is legal to use, no big deal. All the fur I've used for previous projects has either been faux or re-purposed from old fur coats from the thrift store of Goodwill. Occasionally I pick up some leather or fur scraps from a taxidermist friend, but those are few and far between.

    14. I would not be offended by leather or fur. I rarely by anything new in this area ahem making costumes for people or dolls, I visit flea markets and thrift stores and see what I can re-purpose

    15. Personally I do not wear or ingest animal(no, not even shoes). So logically my dolls don't either. After traveling the world i know how many animals are treated for eating and hides/fur and do not wish to give those persons more business. I don't look down on those that do, just with all the synthetics in this day and age I hope some people look into other materials other than animal based 1st.

    16. Would you be insulted or shocked to see a doll wearing clothes made from animal byproduct (furs and leathers and such)?
no, I would not be insulted. I have already used some leather for a jacket I am making at the moment.

Does it make a difference if the byproducts came from animals we eat (cows, rabbits, pigs, sheep, etc.)?
I think it would be better if the all the parts of a animal were being used. Not only the meat.

Would it make a difference if you bought the leather/fur from a crafts store (like Hobby Lobby or Michael's)?
      no

Would it make a difference if you bought the byproduct straight from the distributor, whom you knew to use all parts of the animal?
It would be nice to know but not alway possible.

Or is it all the same to you?
No it is not all the same. I got the leather bits I used from a small factory that makes human jackets from fur and leather. They told me that all materials used were from trusted sellers.

    17. I agree. In particular animals that are raised and killed ONLY for their fur. I have a particularily really big issue with domestic animal fur being used in the fur trade. Some countries kill, skin, and use domestic cat fur. If an animal is raised for meat I see no problem using its pelt too (such as cow, deer, etc leather and lambskins). But I draw the line very much at fox, mink, wolf, and ANY kind of wild or domestic dog and cat. It is just plain vanity and in my opinion, the wrong message to send in our roll as caretakers of the earth.

How can you have a pet rabbit, hamster, cat or dog but think it ok to kill and brutally skin others JUST for fur? If you plan on eating it then by all means use the fur.

    18. I think if it bothers you, don't buy it.

It doesn't bother me. I'm sure the leather and fur isn't from endangered species, so...

    19. I'd say this is pretty much my view as well.

Personally I don't like the idea at all, and will avoid it as much as possible for both myself and my dollies.
I am a real animal lover myself, and also I can't see a point in using these materials on dollies, who receive no actual benefit from either of them anyway. There's plenty of equally wonderful looking substitutes. :)

    20. I have no problem with fur or leather being used. I prefer synthetic materials, though, because they are easier to work with.
