Doll Couples...Together or Separate?

Jun 5, 2009

1. I do have a couple in mind, actually I have a... threesome in mind >>; I've been wanting to get a NAR Abel for a while and I also want a DollFamily Lyre. Well looking at Abel's sweet face and big eyes and Lyre's little smirk and touch of evil, I know they'll be a perfect match xD
But I also plan on bringing home a ringdoll man some day and I know he'll be latched onto Abel as well. x3
The only other 'match' I plan on is bringing home my Merlot's twin brother
But I am going to try and save up and have both Lyre and Abel on layaway at the same time so they'll come around the same time, so one one be long without the other. Then the naughty ringdoll will just scooooooot in eventually

2. Was it planed and did you order them around the same time?
I have two couples. Both came in totally different ways. The first couple came together of their own accord. The second couple I intended for them to become a couple in time.

Did you have one first and realize they needed a partner?
No, I always planned to have two girls. I didn't intend for them to be a couple. One is gay, the other had no sexuality. Or so i thought.

Did you plan a couple get one first, then get the other?
No I never purposefully planned a couple. I was going to stick with three dolls. A year or so after I decided she could have one when I came about some unexpected money.

Or does a friend have one and you have the other?
Both my couples live with me.

Or did it happen a completely different way?
Merry and Griffin I imtended to be together over time but as soon as I took him from the box it was clear they were already together. I guess even before I knew of him.

3. Like most of the people here, the dolls I wanted were characters, first. I found a mold that fits my girl, but it's very difficult to find one for her mate. Especially since the owner of his character doesn't like dolls and doesn't want to help me look!

4. For some reason, I always come up the characters (not dolls) in pairs. Now, they aren't necessary a couple, even tho there are some, but maybe a co-workers, friends, enemies, master and servant etc. The point is; there always is two of them. Every. single. time.
Even the character I intentionally made lonely turned up to have two individual personalities in one body.
Now, because this curious habit of mine, if I want some character as doll, its unevadeble that the other comes home too. But I never have money to buy two at time (most will be 1/3 sized) or patience to save long enought to be able to do so.
So all my dolls come home alone, but are other half of a pair.

5. I never planned couples, but after having one doll sometimes, I look and think that a partner doll would go well with them...mainly with their outfit/look they have ( which in turn gives them a sort of character, although I don't tend to write stories about my dolls)..out of my all dolls I have four 'pairs'.

6. I have 2 couples, neither of which were planned - and one of which actually rather surprised me.

I don't have a cast of characters I was filling with the dolls, and there was no preconceived backstory to them. As I acquired each doll in turn, their characters developed and I wove them into the existing ongoing story that started with my first doll (who is no longer with me) and gathered pace when I got Tal (modded Haruka elf boy), then Marius (Dollshe V2 Hound) and Galhaia (CP Juri 05) in a short space of time. Tal had an online flirtation (more of a long-distance crush really) with Ashbet's Soony for a while. Then Eric (CP Shiwoo) turned up, and he turned out to be Marius' little brother. (The family expanded when their little sister Gabrielle - MNF Shiwoo girl - showed up.)

Eric had an online thing that crossed over into a RP relationship with ViolentViolet's Vincent (CP El) which then became an open relationship when I acquired Perseus (CP Vamp. Breakaway 05) - who was also platonically involved with Branchuchan's Rain. Marius dated Ayame (Obitsu 60cm) for a while but they drifted apart. Then he encountered Effigy's Corpselight and discovered he was gay and rather went off the rails a bit!

Eric & Perseus drifted apart at about the same time they drifted apart from their other partners; Kai (CP El) turned up and he and Eric have been an item ever since (Kai basically grinned, smirked and said "Mine!" and Eric went along with it quite happily); and Galhaia presented Marius with a surprise daughter he hadn't known about, fell head over heels in love with Galhaia as he grew to know his daughter, and now they're betrothed and probably going to have a summer wedding! Which was completely unplanned by me, I might add.

Yeah, a bit soap-opera-ish around here. I probably ought to write all this stuff down properly sometime....

7. I'm not really sure if my dolls will have rp plot-lines or not, it sounds like alot of fun though.

8. Though I don't RP or write dolly fiction, my crew are all (to some degree at least-) character avatars. I have a fair few groupings of various sorts among them... Siblings and couples, mostly, as well as a few "best friends" pairs. Some of those grouped dolls were aquired together (Harumatsu & Tien Jen, for instance, are twin brothers and were purchased at the same time. Kosetsu & Hogasha, a pair of friends, also arrived together-), but most have come in one at a time.

It often takes me awhile (and several failed attempts-) to settle on just the right doll for each individual. That can mean having half of a pair, or one partner without the other for weeks, months or even years sometimes. It's just the nature of the beast when you have something specific in mind for them.

I've had a couple of doll characters that were "involved" with another owners' characters in the past, and found that, while it was certainly a lot of fun to kick around ideas with another person, it gradually forced me to alter those characters in ways I'd never intended. After awhile, they became much less my own creations than a reflection of what the other person thought they ought to be. Entirely removed from their original concepts in that way, they hardly felt like they were still my dolls or characters at all... They'd become part-time accessories for someone else's fiction. That ended up really bothering me, especially in Tien Jen's case.

So... no more "outside interests" for this bunch. Groupings are in-house only and I'm determined to keep it that way. I won't say having a shared world wasn't fun, but I've learned my lesson. They're definitely not for me in the long run.

9. My first BJD was female and didn't really have a character. She sort of developed on her own, and before I had a really clear idea of who she would become, I ordered a boy, expecting him to be her partner While we waited for him to arrive, she found someone else! So much for absence making the heart grow fonder! In the final analysis, three of my four ladies have found a partner, and lady #4's guy is waiting in the wings. I sure hope she likes him, because my dolly funds are a bit short right now!

10. I have a lot of couples here! They all met in different ways, too, it seems.

Was it planed and did you order them around the same time?

My first two SD13s were definitely a planned couple. I sought them at the same time, but I didn't think I'd find them both very close together-- I couldn't 'order' them together because they're both old long-sold-out Volks LEs (Shiro & Isao), so it was all a gamble. But it turned out they both arrived fairly close together, after all. Ahh, l'amour. <3

And when Soom & Iplehouse released Chalco & Tedros almost simultaneously, I realized that that was a couple I wanted to have-- so I did pretty much order them at the same time. I just knew they would be perfect together when I saw them.

Did you have one first and realize they needed a partner?

This happens a lot! Maybe I've finally brought home a long-sought doll, & then decided he needs me to buy him a partner... or maybe I've brought home a new doll and realized that he's the perfect match for somebody who's already here. Sometimes, love ain't nothin but a crime of opportunity.

Did you plan a couple get one first, then get the other?

That's usually how it ends up that way, yes. Especially if they're from different companies, and you have to wait for different release dates.

Or, especially if one of them is very hard-to-find, a guy could be staying single for awhile. After I brought my Iplehouse Luo home, I realized that he would settle for nothing less than a Volks Genji, so I mentally told him to just prepare to look really soulful & lonely for a long time. But then Mr. One True Love magically turned up in the Marketplace within 6 months, after all, so that all worked out nicely. Don't you love love-stories with happy endings?

Or does a friend have one and you have the other?

Actually have one of these, too! My first doll, Rowan (SDC Arashi) got a long-distance girlfriend as soon as he arrived, since there was nobody else for him to play with here. ^^ Lucy (Serendipity Sharmin) still lives with Grey_Roses out in Kentucky.

Or did it happen a completely different way?

All of the above. :3

11. Was it planned and did you order them around the same time?
The first doll I had who had a partner was a reshelled doll, so he preceded his partner by a while until someone suitable showed up as an LE.

Did you have one first and realize they needed a partner?
Yes. My dolls are all based on OCs so I already knew if they needed partners, although that doesn't always mean I plan to shell their partners at first. But then I feel bad :sweat.

Did you plan a couple get one first, then get the other?
This has been how both my sets of couples have worked. In one case there's a third partner needed, but he's en route.

Or does a friend have one and you have the other?
This I haven't done, and I don't think I would. For one thing, I don't live anywhere near any of my BJD friends. Two, I'm a control freak when it comes to my own characters.

Or did it happen a completely different way?
Nope, so far it's been pretty standard. I had couples to shell, and only managed to get one half of the couple at a time. Although even though my incoming Williams should make that particular love triangle complete, there will still be floating head issues :sweat. Something about that storyline has led to hybrids . . .

12. Was it planned and did you order them around the same time?
My first doll was a girl. She soon demanded a little brother. From there on things got complicated. I developed new characters and every one brought an opposite with them. So no, they all came one after the other. I didn't have a couple planned nor did I know that some dolls would need siblings later on.

Did you have one first and realize they needed a partner?
Yes, every time. They have demands. Usually I end up realizing that someone is left out and needs a friend or a sibling. Right now I don't have a couple per se but I can see a rivalry that might well turn from a hate-story to a love story. ;)
Or another one that could be more than just a friendship.
My younger characters all have a friend, sibling (sometimes twin) or demon to accompany them.

Or does a friend have one and you have the other?
I don't think I could ever do that. I couldn't see giving one of my characters "out of my hands". I don't know if other people's dolls could make their way into my stories. I'm pretty specific about time / setting / species. n_n

13. Was it planed and did you order them around the same time?
All of my charcters have partners either friends or intimate partners or eveb siblings. My first pair was I ordered one and then a friend had a floating head that she realized looked more like my boy Aya. So I got that head and the rest is history. I have twelve dolls now.....so.

Did you have one first and realize they needed a partner?
I had Nicky first a DZ X and....new I needed to get him a Aya...but I didn't plan it right away but Aya's head kinda fell into my lap and well the rest is history.

Did you plan a couple get one first, then get the other?
I planned on my set of twins as seperates....I bought a Mo-b head and thought ohh I'll just get this one now nad a another head later after I get this one a body. well...my regualr shiwoo head became the other twin.
Or does a friend have one and you have the other?
Well...I have two dolls one Nicky and Aya that kinda became a threesome with a friends doll... and my boy Damian...who is with another friends doll. I think really this all depends on what the characters are like.Or did it happen a completely different way?
N/A

14. My doll couples were never planned from the beginning. But if I have a doll and another comes to me, sometimes, I just know they should be a couple. Was it planed and did you order them around the same time?
Did you have one first and realize they needed a partner?
Yes. That happened once. I had a doll who seemed lonely to me.
Did you plan a couple get one first, then get the other? No

Or does a friend have one and you have the other? No
Or did it happen a completely different way?As I said, it just seems to happen once I have one doll and another appears in the collection. Sometimes, I have paired them and it hasn't seemed right so I have changed the pair or made one of the pair independent.

This was an interested set of questions.

15. This is a cute thread. I thought I'd share a little about my frenemy couple! HA!

Was it planned and did you order them around the same time? It was not planned. For a few days after ordering Harley I was at a loss about what her character would be and had about decided to just let her choose when she got home. And then I remembered how I'd always wanted a group of Batman characters--what better dolls to be comic book characters than Iplehouse dolls, right?? After that it was easy, I just had to wait for Iplehouse to make the rest of my characters.

Did you have one first and realize they needed a partner?I ordered my IH SID Cherie when she first came out--I loved her sculpt, her costume (total rabbit freak right here) and I just simply fell in love. She pulled me out of my doll slump. As soon as I realized she was perfect for my Harley Quinn (definitely not DC Canon Batman, don't hate!) she had to have a Selina Kyle. In my version Selina and Harley (real name Hyo-Sun) have known each other a long time. Sometimes they've been friends, sometimes enemies and lately they've been trying to kill each other. But Selina/Catwoman is a doll I've wanted to shell from the get-go of my doll collecting, so it was a no brainer, it would be like watching Psych with no Shawn.

Did you plan a couple get one first, then get the other? I ordered Cherie and figured I would wait for Iple to release the next SID girl (I KNEW it was going to be the one!) after I decided she was Harley. Of course, it just so happened that Soo was perfect for my Selina. I have never ever ever ordered LE's before but I found myself ordering 2 in a row from Iplehouse for these two!! They were so worth it though.

Or does a friend have one and you have the other? Nope, all mine. I don't think I could handle having something incomplete like that. I know, I'm weird.

Or did it happen a completely different way? Nope, happened in the usual way.

16. Almost all of my dolls were based on pre-existing characters, many of which I roleplay. The one that was not based on a character quickly developed one which I now roleplay. All of them are related or acquainted with at least one other of my dolls in some way or another, and one pair of mine dated very briefly. However, I do not currently have any doll romantic couples of which I own both dolls/characters.
Through roleplaying, after I got the doll for him, my Wolfgang fell in love with Onee-Chan-Taichou's Hiroki. They have been together for over a year now (wow, I just realized that! :o) My Shiloh is in sort of a strange relationship with her Mikami, and so is Denny :sweat I have another doll, Andra, who has dated a couple of dolls belonging to other people, but nothing has stuck for him. A couple of my other dolls are/have been in relationships or at least been friends with other people’s dolls.
Eventually, I plan on getting some dolls for characters that are romantically involved, but for now, all of my doll/character’s significant others belong to other people, and I think it’s fun that way for roleplaying purposes. My characters’ backstories are well planned out, but I let my roleplay with them happen naturally and like that I can’t always control the situation exactly. By having friends and romantic partners that belong to other people, my characters continue to develop and change in a way that, to me, seems much more realistic as far as human behavior and development goes.

17. I never actually plan to have couples, or at least I haven't so far. If I do have couples then it isn't for the dolls, it's because of the characters. My Mihael and Diablo have a story where they're in love, but the dolls next to each other look so awkward! They're story came after I'd bought them and they weren't originally intended to be together.
Did you have one first and realize they needed a partner? I like the thought of doll families and really want a doll couple with a child at some point but it only happens if there's a story to make it happen

18. Was it planned and did you order them around the same time?
It wasn't planned at first, since my first doll was just a doll I thought was cute. But after I got my second doll, I realized he was lonely :(
Did you have one first and realize they needed a partner?
Yes
Did you plan a couple get one first, then get the other?
No, I didn't think I would have a "couple" but I finally got my dream doll
Or does a friend have one and you have the other?
Noooo but that actually seems more interesting than having both in my possession. It's like an RP

19. I own a couple of alchemylabo U-noa zero.
I bought one in 2008 and the second in 2010, at first I really don't have any plan to make them twin dolls，but When I heard AlchemyLabo rerlease Zero， I ordered my 2nd girl without hesitation， now I will buy everything double clothes， shoes， eyes， hairs， because they are soooo lovely to be together and in a same style.

20. The only romantic couple I have was planned out from the start--I bought the dolls to fit characters from a short story I'd written, and I eventually found pretty perfect molds. But I had to buy them almost a year apart, since one was sold out...but he waited for her faithfully!
