1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Doll Faux Pas

Nov 27, 2004

    1. my biggest n00b mistake- telling my parents it would only stay with one *_*

    2. When I first saw BJDs and heard them described as "big" dolls, I thought they were the size of my Gene dolls (about 16in)!

I only wanted two - a boy and a girl and that was it! I would never, ever buy another one because they were too expensive! I just bought my 4th today. :whee:

I also thought I wouldn't want girls. My one girl was just going to be a companion to my boy and I was sure she'd be mostly ignored. When she arrived, I promptly forgot all about my boy and eventually sold him. :sweat

    3. I'm still pretty much a n00b for the most part, but not as much as I once was (I catch on pretty quickly to most things). I can think of a couple things I've done that were stupid:

      - When I first ordered my first doll Blisdon, I told my one friend "I don't understand these people who order a couple dolls within the span of a month! How do they afford that? I couldn't possibly find the money to do that!". Of course 3 weeks later I then ordered my Soom Sard. :| And then a Migidoll Ryu head. :sweat And then I put a Volks Rose on layaway a month and a half later. :doh I quickly learned that money you didn't even realize you made ends up going to these dolls. And if it isn't from your income, it comes from another place... it's called a credit card.

      - When I first got into this, I didn't understand at all what a face up was. I thought it was the difference between a sleeping or dreaming head and a regular head. So a regular Iplehouse Lion would be the one with a face up, because he wasn't asleep, so therefore his face was.... up? And I assume I thought that the sleeping heads were face... down? Ridiculous. No wonder I couldn't figure out why the face upped heads costed more.

      - My all time favorite, though, is that I was one of those n00bs that buys one doll and thinks that they are never going to get another one. And of course, I couldn't just keep that to myself either. I would find a topic on here called "How many dolls do you plan to have?" or similar and come on saying "I have one ordered, and that is it! I am just going to spoil him and only have him!". Then turned around and ordered another one 3 weeks later. :| It seems that everyone says that at the beginning though. So now when I see a new person on here posting that they will only have one doll, I just have to laugh.

    4. I am still a noob. I have yet to restring any of my dolls. I just don't
feel "ready" to tackle that. I have never given a face up. I prefer the "professionals" to do that. I am rather proud that I am starting to recognize molds now. When I first started to get interested in BJD's I would have to look to see if the company was listed. Sometimes I can actually tell before seeing the name. I still do not know the differences between companies, such as body differences and resin colors (For hybrids) and such. But I am learning and that is half the fun of it. I never in a million years thought I would be interested in a doll with wounds and now I have on the Glorydoll site numerous times. All I can say is what is wrong with me :ablah:
I wanted to ditto the post above me. I was only going two get two dolls, a boy and girl. Then thanks to my CC I ended up with 3 dolls. Yikes. I did end up selling one because he looked totally different IRL. Now I have my eye on another girl but an SD this time. I have an SD male who's lonely. :)

    5. I never thought I would need/want more than one doll, but dolls seem to like each other's company just as much as human company. They multiply when you're not looking!

I have a few niggly nightmares about complimenting someone on their Shiwoo and being told he's an El, or something. I do know some sculpts now and I'm learning more and more each time, but companies with vaguely similar faces really stump me. I've already given up with Volks, their dolls seem so similar I'll have no hope identifying them.

    6. I LOVE that face-up definaition!!!!!!! And really...it does seem like a possible translation, doesn't it, (a bit like 'press paila good feel' etc lol)

I also thought I'd only stick with one or two when I first started, (of course, I remember the days when all I owned were 1/6 Volks and used to claim I 'didn't like' the 'big ones' lol)...I have four BJD now. But, honestly, I was perfectly fine with one. Two of the others just sort of fell into my lap unexpectedly, and the fourth is my Sard....but...I couldn't say no to the Sard!

    7. GRAH. Doing a search on the web for "dolfies" and getting, like, NOWHERE. That's the only term I knew them by. And all this MSD, SD, 14mm, 7-8 nonsense, forget it! I probably over annoyed my friend with constantly repeated questions. And then I found DoA, and all was right with the world. But wow, I did so many stupid things. Like with photography... Shasta's early pictures? He looks totally different from the way he does now, even when I dress him the same. Just the way we get used to how the bodies move... it's amazing how different things are now. I don't take up the nose shots anymore, that's for sure. XD

    8. I don't think I had to many public mistakes.
      - Internally though...yeah well, I still can't tell the difference between most face sculpts.
      - And ofcourse they "I'll order just one" mistake. 4 months down the road I have 4 and 2 on layaway.
      - The idea that most SD sized boys are pretty similar in size. Maybe that was more a quiet hope cause I ended up with dolls who can't exchange wigs and hardly fit in eachothers clothes. With 2 more offsize bastards coming in (I mean..the Lati has size 7" and that for an SD?)..blah more shopping needed.

    9. My absolute worst mistake was trying to use real make-up (glittery eyeshadow, BTW) on my vinyl Dollfie Dream. Her poor head had a weird greasy shine on it.. and I had to scrub it with mild detergent to get it off. I also tried to carve out the eyeholes on her original head with the wrong tool on my Dremel.. and I accidentally melted and BURNED the corners of her eyes. Agh! That head has since gone to the trash XD

    10. Haha, yeah, I couldn't say no to Sard either. In fact he was the one that I ordered 3 weeks after my first doll, when I swore I would only have one. He is the one who made a fool of me!!

    11. I've gotten some BJD's that I wish I hadn't of. And still can't sell them or trade them bacause no one else wants them either. I try to do more homework on my dolls now.
      Stella

    12. I still am a n00b. Unfortunately. I try to hide it the best I can.

    13. Hm. I did one heck of a lot of research before joining the forum to try and keep noobness to a minimum, but it was still obvious. And still is. ^^; I'm still scared of taking apart any of them and restringing and modding is definately out of the question for me- but I'm getting there. They all need to be cleaned at some point so I'll have to dismantle them all . That is were I wish I didn't have so many xD
And sizing confused me to begin with very much. what with MSD, SD, and Yo SD being general terms and with all the companies own names for those sizing like delf, DOT, Ai and Gem and then the abbrieviations for some of them and then the wig and eyes sizes for those sizes... *dies*

    14. A friend showed me a photo of a (female) doll that happened to be the same sculpt (and gender) as one I was getting. My response was, "He's cute! What doll is that?"

    15. Exactly! I'll try to keep my n00b-ness to a minimum.

    16. And all this time I thought it WAS Duncan! :doh I tend to do that. Read things too fast and skip over things like pronunciation lol. I'm another person that only experiences this hobby online, so I can't say I really know the pronunciation of most of the dolls. I'm thankful my doll's mold is something simple like Moon haha.

Hmm That to date is hopefully the only noob thing I've done. I also tend to do my research first!

I've had noob moment sewing things for my doll. Like the first time I made a hoodie (from James' patterns) I sewed the sleeve shut haha. My seam ripper is my best friend.

    17. For a long time I had no clue what the difference was between Luts and Ceberus project dolls were (aren't they the same thing?).
Another was reading a doll post about a meet up in Hong Kong were everyone posted "That is definatly a "breakaway" party." In my mind I was like "what the hell is a breakaway?" Weeks later I finally found out what they were but didn't ask in the original post because I didn't want to be seen as a n00b.:sigh
But the next time I see a doll that I've never heard about I will ask what company it's from.

    18. me: "OMG! no, no, it cant be! [checks] oh dear god it is!"
:sweat I have just added a new noob moment to my list... I thought it was duncan too. *_*

lol, after a few weeks of looking at dolls, I thought I was ok at telling the gender of dolls...
      >until I thought AoD's An was female... (that is, until requesting pics here for my sister and realizing i was wrong when someone replied.) <blames the promo pic on AoD>

all-in-all, *raises hand* still a noob

EDIT: geeze, I just can't get over the Ducan thing..... And to think, he's like at the top of my list for guys I'd like to own

    19. Going to my first meet and when asked what mold my doll was replying "Chiwoo!" then doing a mental slap to the forehead and looking at the person who was giving me this "are you nuts?" look and saying "oops sorry! i meant Kum-ran! errghh talk about feeling dumb! i had been thinking about a chiwoo when she asked the question and it sort of popped out before i could stop the train of thought i was on in my head and comment on what was being said out loud!

    20. *raises hand* yep i'm still a noob but learning fast. i check out everything i can on forum so as to know what's going on. i also fall into the "i'm only gonna get one because they are so expensive" category. i joined DOA the beginning of august and now about 2 1/2 weeks later i own 3 dolls,1 practice head,2 dolls on the way,and 1 more practice head on the way.not to mention clothes, shoes, wigs, accessories, face up supplies.........i haven't really done anything too terrible yet,but i am sure something will happen. i almost lost an "s" hook down my dolls neck while checking out the inside of her head. i freaked*oh nooooo don't go down there*
o.k. here comes a real noob question. so i totally have gotten a grip on most of the terms around here except....AAAARRRRGGGG i'm so embarrassed.....why does everyone use XD orXXD ?????*gots to know*
