1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Doll Faux Pas

Nov 27, 2004

    1. Well, once I dropped my only pair of glass eyes on the floor. Somehow they didn't even have a scratch! :'D

    2. I don't think I've had many faux pas. I'm all for getting cheaper dolls if it makes you happy, the same way if you buy a super rare limited expensive doll. My biggest n00b irritance is when people don't use the search engine! I try to use it to find anything I want and THEN post a topic, not the other way around.
      I'm part of the pronunciation clan though, but I find it hard to pronouce every day stuff let alone all the worldwide names and terms!

    3. I never cared to learn to pronounce all those dollnamnes correctly. Because I know there are just some sounds I won't ever be able to say without embarrasing native speakers horribly *_* Does that make me a bad person after being in this hobby for this many years?

      Japanese I can manage, easy enough since it kind of uses the same sounds as swedish. So I can do good guesses at the pronounciation from the spelling of names.

      But korean, noooo, after watching too many korean movies I know that I just going to mess up horribly (and probably pronounce something so off the mark that it'll probably mean something crude).

    4. Well, sadly enough I'm still a newbie and can think of at least one "faux paus" already.
      I was so nervous getting into this that I actually did buy my first doll because she was cheap. ><; I can still name about three others I liked more then her, but thankfully enough once I had her in hand I fell in love. Pure luck on my end, I can't imagine what I would've done if I didn't. That would have just ruined the entire hobby for me, I think.
      <--Easily discouraged -.-;

    5. im not sure if these are faux pas or not XD but some fun n00b mistakes

      when i got my first doll he was literally the first id ever seen or touched. those of you who own DM Adams know how small they are for SDs so you may understand my shock when i attended my first dollmeet and thought everyone had 70cm dolls cause they were so much bigger than mine XD

      i thought all NS and WS tones would be the same no matter what company

      i was afraid to change my first dolls eyes because i didnt know how and i thought i might have to take off the head...i ended up never taking his head off until he got his faceup renewed....The artist who did it took off his head for me cause i couldnt do it. i cried. and, i already had 4 dolls at this point...XDDD

      my second doll had huge eyes compared to my first...i put his eyes in dead center (crazy-eye) cause i didnt know any better and never changed them. now thats part of his look XDD

      im sure there are more, but id be here all night!

    6. I haven't named my Hisui doll yet (thinking of a good name...). Although, my mom and my aunt often forget her name and just call her "chop suey" cause it sorta rhymes.:nowords:

    7. I still can't tell the difference between Dollshe Saints and Bernards, depending on the photos >>;;; The profile gives it away fine, but a front mug shot... haha... I'm so screwd. XD;;

      Noob things... I can't think of anything that I do or have done that I can see as "DUMB N00B!!!"...
      I'm still not... entirely sure how to clean the lips out properly between face ups. o_o I've tried tooth picks and tooth brushes and Erasers, Eraser with alcohol, Erasers with Everclear... Bah. :|

      But I do use Krylon matte for my face ups XD;; At least until I run out, and then I'll convert.

    8. The two biggest ones that got me were:

      Pronunciations. I would say the name in my head, but as soon as I head someone else say it with more doll experiance, completely freak and over ever type the name -usually with the excuse "I can't remember his name but.."

      The second one was after I'd ordered my Lahoo. I got really excited about it, and even after I got him still did it. I wouldn't recognise any other Lahoo as a Lahoo... Only occasionally would I notice it! >.<' Thank goodness I dont do that anymore...

    9. Forgetting the name of the doll I ordered.:sweat

      "I'm waiting for a new doll."
      "Great, what did you order."
      "It's a... er... hold on." *frantic search on the company's website*

      Someone had to teach me a trick how to remember the mold name.

      ---

      I was just going through some old doll pictures I made way in the beginning. It looks like I made a lot of hidious fur wigs, that I thought looked great. XD

    10. First bjds I saw in real life was msd's, but I was SO SURE they were sd's that when I was choosing my first doll I stubbornly brushed away all the msd cuties, because I belived they were too tiny xDDDD

    11. Aside from the usual "I can't pronounce this!" issue, I find that I often can not tell what gender a doll is. Some guy dolls look so feminine, and some girl dolls have immature torsos, so there's no real shape definition. I'm always like "You're girl is so pretty!". "ummm... he's actually a boy." Doesn't help when they cross-play either! No one has ever been offended by my inability to detect gender, but I bet it annoys the heck out of them.

    12. I skipped sale-threads with "OBO" next to it's price because I figured it was some strange Asian currency and the seller didn't want to deal in USD. One day I read "x amount of USD or best offer" and there was the lightbulb...
      I felt pretty stupid :)

    13. Weeellll - I looked on ebay for my first doll to buy, and saw "SD" with a cute picture and oh my god, only $150!!! Hit the buy key and only had a subsequent veeerrryy slow dawning realisation that I had in fact bought a dress. Cute dress though. <cringes>

    14. When I was VERY new, like still in the researching stage... I was so close to buying a Volks Dollfie and customizing that. Until someone told me they were the size of Barbie dolls. >_> I still want to customize one though. I also still called them all Dollfies, and even referred to them as such with my friends who had BJDs... until they corrected me.

      Thankfully though, even though I was a BJD newb, I'm not a forum newb. I know how to use search functions and I know how to find what I need. I actually joined DOA because half the links I found for researching purposes were here and I needed to register so I could see them. XD

      When I got Roslin, it was my first time handling a SD. I thought all BJDs were sopposed to be super smooth like AOD's and it was nice resin because of that. XD; I was shocked when I touched a friend's and the resin felt completely different. XD

      But my worst Faux Pas was how the poor girl looked after I attempted to customize her. x__x I cut bangs into the wig I bought, and they were way too short. Now, I've cut bangs into human wigs before and I consider myself to be a pretty good wig-stylist. But that poor wig. T_T

      I blushed her TOO dark. She looked like she rubbed sunless tanner all over her face. Plus pupiless blue eyes... oh god. She was ugly. Not to mention, I had her wrapped in fabric lying around on the floor of the hotel room. I did make her a decent temporary skirt with scraps and the sewing machine that was in there. But my friend who doesn't sew attmepted to hot glue some underwear. Which involved a long square of fabric hot glued in the back and then a small strip hot glued in the middle. .__. (I could've cut properly shaped ones out for her). Eventually I did cave in and buy her a decent dress and some boots the next day of the con. But oh god. I feel bad for torturing her like that. XD;

      At my first doll meet, we lined all our dolls up on these stairs. Well, someone that had some pants that I wanted to try on my doll was packing up. I had placed mine up near the top. There's about 60 dolls on the steps. I thought it would be smart to try to grab my big Spinel. I ended up knocking over about 5 other dolls in the process. x___x Thankfully none were damaged. But I felt horrible afterwards. What's worse, the pants didn't even fit! So it wasn't even worth the embarassment and potential paying-back of like... $2000+ that I didn't have. I made a very large and clear mental note to myself to avoid a situation like that again. -___- I still want to smack myself every time I think about it.

    15. At first I thought that eyes were flexible, and that you put them from the outside, like contacts, hahaha :sweat And Before having my first doll, I never caught how they where working, with the strings, you know.

    16. To this day, even though I've been into the "BJD Lifestyle" for going on...a year and a half, I don't know most sculpts by looking at them unless its one I truly love. I feel that if I want to know what a BJD is, I'll ask.

      I'll tell you about a mistake I made just a few weeks ago.:sweat

      I'm Pagan, and I went to a Beltane Ritual with Ryuichi. I wanted him consecrated/protected/blessed, so I put some protective oil on his forehead.

      BIG MISTAKE!!

      Little did I know that oil+msc=thumb-sized spot of missing/eaten away sealant!:o:doh:...(

      Lucky for me, a friend cleaned up the spot, and put on more msc, now its barely noticible.

      Oh well, good thing he's going to get a new faceup once I find his proper colored wig/s.

      Either way, he's still GORGEOUS in my eyes! *hugs tight*

      And I guess I'm still a n00b! :sweat :lol:

      Ryu

    17. I do this too! I didn't realize it's a faux pas. :doh I also do this for a company's acronym.

    18. Hmmm, I've been in the hobby for 2 1/2 years now and I can't really think of many myself. I reaserached the crap out of the hobby silently for 3 years before ever even thinking to save the money to get a doll.

      I can't tell every sculpt but can sometimes recognize the company. I'm always asking people what sculpt their doll is so that I don't run off thinking it's something that it's not or not being able to tell someone later about a sculpt of doll that I saw.

      Pronunciation, I pronounce it as I see it with the assumption that everything has a vowel pronunciation of "ah, ee, oo, eh, oh" after taking japanese for a year.... so sometimes I'm right and sometimes not though the korean companies always confuse me becuase a lot of the names aren't even korean so the way they pronounce them is different, and until a company representative tells me how to pronounce it I don't know. I remember I got taught the proper way to say Luts by a sweet Korean girl at my school who when she saw my doll was super schocked becuase she hadn't seen one since coming here.

      Okay I just thought of one and I remember the friend that sort of hooked me into getting my first doll brough her first one to work with her and I was admiring him and at some point made a comment about him being "one of those thousand dollar dolls"... when first looked into and researched all that was available at the time was volks... little did I know as time has passed that hundreds of companies had surfaced out of the woodwork and he cost much less than I thought he had.

    19. Head caps, I always forget to secure them and then they going flying off into the sunset, I don't know why, but I just seem to have a mental block with this :doh

    20. I am one of those people who had no idea how to use a forum,
      had no idea what a BJD really was,
      had no idea what resin was,
      and sadly...I DID ask people what the cheapest dolls I could find were. ;__________________;
      I ask for forgiveness.
      I didn't much like the cheap dolls and found out I have a taste for expensive resin. haha.
      I recently bought my first doll, a MNF Miyu. @______@
      I just ask people to be patient with me. : )
