1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Doll Faux Pas

Nov 27, 2004

    1. Lmao!! I cant tell a hound, bernard or saint apart either. All I know is that their all dollshe's...though I wouldnt be surprised if one of them wasnt. Ohh, teh nooby ways kill me so.

    2. Yup that was me too, and I used to wonder why they would have people complaining about the price and all that. :sweat :doh

    3. Still a noob, so I'm still cranking out the mistakes. >.>

About a week ago, I took Jericho to school after adjusting his body and such, only to find that... I forgot to put the putty back on his eyes. The poor thing kept going stupid and cross-eyed all day.

    4. Oh this is such a great thread. And it goes so far back! Awesome!

Um My best one was when Aernath was searching for her first doll and showed me the Iplehouse site. I'm thinking "my god that's so expensive, there HAS to be something else!" and proudly found an eBay auction for - you guessed it - a Dollfie. A 12-inch Dollfie. "Look! there's one that only costs $50!"

She very nicely didn't laugh directly into my face. I *did* spend a month or more scouring every inch of this site shortly afterward to try to get the basics down. But yeah, I recognize lots of these. "What does OOAK mean?" "MSC? MSD? AEIOU and SOMETIMES Y?" "Yder Meener miney mo..."

And then freaking horribly when my first doll body came flying apart. "What do you mean, do I know how to STRING them? What?? O_O"

Fighting for an ENTIRE DAY to get Kenshin restrung for the first time, because the knot was not allowing the tension string to slide and one leg utterly refused to get reattached. It's such a stupid thing that I can't even describe it properly, but I was completely exhausted at the end of the day and the restringing failed shortly thereafter.

      Oh yeah. Good stuff.

    5. I only just learned that BIN stands for Buy It Now within the past few months. XD

But I've also noticed the complete opposite of this thread's topic happening. Someone in here mentioning still not knowing which FCS mold someone is talking about. I've noticed while browsing that I usually have a picture of the doll I am going to see in my head before I click on it. I used to have a ? for FCS, because I didn't care for them. Used to skip over them because I found them all to look the same / be incredibly boring.

      {Funny how elitist you can be, even when a n00b. :doh }

But these days, I can recognize almost any doll instantly. It's more than slightly creepy. Also...you know you've been on the forum too long when you know the codes for almost all the smileys without being in advanced mode. :aheartbea

On pronunciation, seriously WHO KNOWS. Mostly, I just affect a Japanese or Korean accent in hopes that I'm saying things right. When I go to Korea, maybe I can knock on some doors and ask?! LOL. All of my Korean friends told me that the name for BJDs in Korean is some long-ass word that basically means, "A doll that is like a mini human". XD I say "Luts" to rhyme with "puts", and "Yeh-dare".

OH KURR, I LOL'd so hard at your "Mister Super Clean". :XD:

      :hamster:
      Tacti

    6. i've re-strung my dolls on numerous occasions since i got them...but one thing i always do, every single time, even when i CHECK before i do it, is that i always end up putting their legs on the wrong way round. i finish stringing and then look at them to find them bow-legged and pigeon-toed :doh

also, there are still a heap of company names i don't know what they mean. and i can't tell any of those Dollshes apart either. they all look identical to me.

    7. I STILL don't know what some of those BBBs look like because of their official pictures being hard to see faces. So I disregard the ones who are just bangs. I didn't know how to look for better pictures. Finally I saw one of an Elena so I bought her.

    8. I am a complete newbie to BJDs, so reading this thread has given me some clues about what NOT to do.
Thanks for saving me some future embarrassment. :sweat

    9. OMG, and the worst part was I was at AC Moore [a craft and hobby shop, for those of you who don't know :3] and I kept asking one of the attendants if they had any 'Mister Super Clean', and he was like, " >>;;;; Uh...you can get....cleaning supplies at a grocery store, y'know." And I was like, "No, it's not Mr. Clean bald guy with the earring, it's called Mister Super Clean! 8D And, and, I guess you use it as a sealent in many doll and figurine collecting hobbies!" 8D
Guy: >>;;;; Sorry, but I...don't know what you're talking about....

HEY, sometimes when reading fast on the internet, n looks like r! *excuses, excuses* xD

Turned out some guys at a comic book store figured out what I was trying to say and hooked me up with some Testor's they used for their Warhammer figures. xD

    10. Recognizing the sculpts and thought that DOD is super awesome.
I mean, no offense to DOD. I love some of their sculpts. But many starters start with DOD and I was one of them. I really thought they were the best in everything.
Some people may think this and have opinions, but I was totally blinded by my excitement back then.

My views are totally changed now. I was 'too young' then. ;D

    11. I thought that Volks little vinyl Dollfies were resin BJDs!
It took me a month to figure out they weren't. That's my biggest dollie Foopah! lol

    12. I remember when I first joined the hobby, I was dumbfounded by how everyone was so enamoured with Volks dolls. I kept thinking, "they all look the same, like anime characters". Talk about elitist... :|

Of course now over half my dolls are volks and I've got so many more I want. *DOH* :doh

Also, my first faceup. What a disaster! And I was soooooo proud of myself!

    13. I know a good dolly faux pas...Never set your dolly on an unstable display shelf. They could lose a finger or two. I set my Asil on a display shelf and when the shelf collapsed...two of her fingers broke right off! I was devastated!

    14. Until about four months ago, I couldn't figure out if it was "Dollfie" or "Dollife". This was after 4 or 5 years of oogling them online.
I still don't know how to take my doll's head off, and instead of learning how and trying it I keep making clothing that can just work around it.
I put a little dent in my girl's wrist when I was replacing her hand because I was a dope and had a crochet hook holding the super-tight elastic x.o

    15. Despite owning a RS Mei, I CANNOT tell you what dolls are bobobies and what are RS's. Can Not. I still call my Mei a Bobobie. And people always kinda scoff, like, Is she for real? Doesn't even know what her OWN doll is.

Also, in pictures I can't see the body? Don't ask me to tell a RS Mei and a BBB Sprite apart. Can't do it. Can not.. They look the exact same to me once people put faces on them.

I freakin' stained my meis head too! Being a total newb, I didn't realize one had to strip, seal, face up, then seal.

I stripped, face up'd and sealed. And then wondered why I couldn't get her face off?!

    16. When I first started researching the hobby, I used the blanket term "dollfie" XD; No one ever corrected me, so I felt like a complete idiot when I finally realized my mistake x__x Especially since I had been asking a seasoned DoA member all of my questions about these "dollfies" D:
And when I heard about yellowing, I freaked XD I was sure that if sunlight so much as TOUCHED my boy, for any length of time, he'd turn a gross lemony color ;o; I'm definitely over that now ^_^ Outside photoshoots are too fun to resist!
I also assumed the measurements for all SDs were the same, so I was horrified when I realized my poor DoD boy was too leggy for most normal SD pants. Now I check every single measurement of my dolls before I buy XD Not making that mistake again.

And then more of a general doll hobby n00b moment. This happened about the middle of this last school year during lunch. Me and my friends are sitting down and one of them is talking about how she saw something about "fully customizable" American Girl dolls in some magazine, and how absurd the idea was, and how expensive they were. So, being curious, I ask "How much are they?" expecting something like $2000 because she was freaking out about the price.
"Like $500" she told me. x__x; I just kind of stared at her and said, "Isn't...that how much most dolls cost...?"
Everyone looked at me like there was something wrong with me D: I've never collected any dolls beyond BJD, so I always kind of thought the $200-$1000+ price range was normal for all dolls. Woops.

    17. I know i most likely don't pronounce things right ^^;;; and I called Ducan, Duncan for almost a year before showing it to my brother who was all "Uh, Cathryn, there is only one "n" in his name...its Ducan...not Duncan" Yeah...still have a hard time saying Ducan outloud cause it sounds so funny to me after saying Duncan for so long!

I also bought a doll before doing any research cause it was cheap. Saw this little barbie sized girl, only $85 with such a cute maid outfit! I bought her and then got on DoA, and realized what i had bought. Though i still adore her XD but yeah...i felt so stupid.

Thats about it so far...i'm the kind of person who does everything in my power to NOT look like a noob. My first re-stringing went well. Need to string him again, cause he suddenly got really loose, but yeah..mabye i'll have another story soon?

    18. It's not a stupid thing I've done but I don't think I'll ever learn all these names & brands & sizes, eeeeK!

    19. -rofl- My very first doll meet way back when. I was holding this gorgeous girl doll that belonged to another owner and we were discussing dolls we don't like. I happened to mention that I really didn't like Nanuri's. And he looks at me weird and is like "do you like my girl?" and I was like "oh yes, she's beautiful." and he was grinning and said that she was a modded nanuri! :XD: After that I began to appreciate how different dolls can look with different faceups. ^____^

    20. Thinking that faceups, eyes and wigs were permanent.

I was looking at DOD's website with a friend, and she pointed out how pretty all the moulds were. I said, "I like so-and-so's eyes but not the colour of her lips... and also this-or-that's eyebrows are beautiful but his hair kinda bugs me..."

She looked at me all funny and replied, "You can change everything you said you didn't like. That's the point of the whole hobby."

Now I have 50+ website links to doll customising goods in My Favs.
