1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Doll Faux Pas

Nov 27, 2004

    1. I think a bit of a faux pas that more experienced doll owners make is the mocking of beginning doll collectors. Especially the "I can't believe she just asked where to a get a cheap one!" I did that. My financial situation is really bad. Everyone in my mom is chronically ill and can't get a job. We live in my grandma's house in the basement ever since my dad left us. We're living on $400 a month on average and that makes life very difficult. I would never say this because I just don't think it's anyone's business but I want people to understand why someone might post a question like that. And not all people (especially me in the beginning) see that there's a way to search for old topics. I just want people to understand why that's upsetting because in the beginning I felt very much like I wouldn't be able to enjoy this aspect of doll collecting which is the doll community. It hurt my feelings quite a bit. Sorry I don't mean to sound like I'm whining, but I just think it's kind of mean.

    2. I have a doll names Kirlll (three l's) and of course DoD have their mould Kirill. Every mention of that word, written or spoken, makes me jump and turn my head, even when it is not directed at me. The spelling is very similar and some people have pronounced it very similarly too. Will I one day get over that? Probably not.

I know some people call them dollfies but I don't usually...unless they are actually dollfies. I've had some people have a go at me for calling one a dollfie when it actually WAS a dollfie.

Oh...I'm still known for calling Doll in Mind's Achernar 'Archernar' even though I actually have one X.x

    3. I originally thought that a Super dollfie was the same size as a normal dollfie. It wasn't until someone posted a picture of their doll with a Barbie next to it that I figured out the difference. "So that's why they cost so much." Also embarrassing was having to explain to my mother why you can't just pretend that a childlike boy doll is a girl.

    4. lol i still think el is prettier than lishe. <3

no i love lishe too, but the luts site doesn't flatter the sculpt with their faceups at all. They both look bad on the site.

    5. ok. this is going to be noobish, but I'm new to the forums and I don't know who to ask. what the heck does it mean to "BUMP" a thread?????

    6. lol nah, no worries! It means you post on the thread so that it shows up on the first page of whatever area the thread is in. Hope that makes sense. lol

    7. oh.... ok. XD

    8. I have to agree with you. When i first bought a doll I really wanted one in my $$range$$ lol which I don't think is wrong at all. People shouldn't get annoyed when people ask questions, especially new people. It's hard to figure out a site and scary that when you do have it semi-figured out the first question you ask or thread you post gets murdered by "n00b" name calling. So not cool. Why can't we all just be nice? But, there's really not as many people as it seems that act this way, there are alot of nice people out there who WILL answer questions.

Can't say if I asked the 'cheap doll' question myself though. I think I just looked around for something similar to 'try' before I dived in with a $400 dollie. lol

    9. I have a problem with the BJDs that use European language names - like some names BJD companies give their dolls, European languages, especially french, are the most difficult to me, I'm sure I sound dumb when pronouncing them.
Japanese is quite easy to pronounce if you remember that it is pronounced exactly as it is written and all the syllables have the same stress; Megumi = meh - gu - mi for example.

On the subject of doll faux pas, I don't care about making any. I hate it when the "elitists" take over as they seem to do everywhere else and look down on anyone else participating in their hobby and not playing by their rules.

    10. Even though i've had one for years, I still can't pronounce "Yder" XD (as well as other things...) I agree with the Japanese names being easier to pronounce T_T

On the subject of elitism, what do you guys consider elitist? I've never seen elitism on this board. But maybe the reason I don't see it is because I don't see these things as elitist?

    11. I think it has more to do with this site being fairly easy to navigate, with clear topics and sections available for people to find what it is they want. DoA isn't a complicated forum and the search facility is pretty easy to find if you take the time to look for it! When you find newcomers asking the same questions over and over when it takes a five second search to get the answers they seek it can be wearing.

I don't think anyone here is particularly intolerant towards newbies, and even when someone has asked a very common question, old hands have been happy enough to answer and provide a link to the appropriate part of the forum! I've never seen anyone new get 'murdered' on DoA, but I have seen some people being told that their thread isn't in the appropriate place. That's not bad manners or rude, that's just an old hand trying to be helpful, because if you post your question in the correct part of the forum, you're going to find the answers you're looking for!

And as for the old 'elitism' chestnut, any hobby is going to have elitists in it, the BJD world is definitely not unique, but you shouldn't let anyone stop you enjoying a hobby. If you try and please everyone else by getting the right doll, the right wig, the right eyes, the right accessories, you'll end up pleasing everyone except yourself...and if you're not part of a hobby to please yourself, why exactly did you join?

I think there is a bigger perception of elitism than the reality, actually. All in all, we're a nice, fair bunch of people here and anyone found to be particularly rude or unfair or elitist is quickly found out.

    12. I remember the first time I ever tried to make up... It was about two years and hald ago, I had a Megi head in my hands, I was cleaning it accurately and then IT JUST FLEW AYAW!

The head fell to the ground and the worst: it BOUNCED twice, causing me a coulple of heart attacks x_D

Luckily the head was safe and sound, but my heart was not the same since then... Thanks my floor was cork-made...

    13. So far so good I don't like I've done any really.... n00b-like things. Considering that it took me at LEAST five years before I could even purchase my first doll (this year, at long last) and I somehow ended up with TWO, I'm doing fairly well. I spent those five years researching and debating about the prices.

My great aunt Gertrude their high!

But I suppose when something is hand-made at this size..... a high price is expected. Lucky me, I seem to like only dolls that have fairly inexpensive prices, so I never did one of those "OMG dollz 4 cheep?" things. XD Thank god, I would have no humanity left otherwise.

However I did just bounce my practice head the other day. >> I was practicing ('magine that) on him and had set Dan the Practice Head aside for a moment to answer an IM and my dog ran through and jarred the table and poor Dan took a flying dive off the side and smacked into the coffee table and then bounced off that onto the floor.

I was afraid for his features! Thankfully he was fine but I was like...... Oooookay, Edge of Table = DON'T SIT DAN THERE.

      Oops, my bad. X3

    14. I thought you could easily put an MSD head on a Yo-SD body. XD

    15. Oh greif...When i first got my boy, I was under the impression that Mr.Clean Magic Eraser was for cleaning...As in..Bathing..Not just for stains.. This was before i knew it was a super-fine sander :doh I took the face-up/blushing off the sides of my boy's face one day on accident...Its just around his ears so his hair covers it but..I still notice and it kills me :sweat

    16. I'm a newbie myself... :sweat

I tend to lurk and try to do my own quiet research before opening my mouth so I don't look like a boob. As you can see, I've been here a little while, but I don't talk much. *points to postcount and join date*

I haven't done anything stupid yet...
But we all have our noob moments, so I'm sure it'll happen at some point. XD

Although I did run into a few "oldbie" BJD collectors on another site who were treating the newbies like dirt. Every time one of the newbies asked a legitimate, polite question, they were belittled and scoffed at as though they were stupid. I think that scared me out of talking too much...

I've found that people here were much nicer though. :)

    17. Likewise, I tend to read everything in sight before even considering posting, so I haven't made any major slip-ups, yet.

I was so confused by the different sizes at first though. YoSD still confuses me...

    18. I am SO lucky that the people I ran into right off the bat were so kind to me!! My VERY first question was "Uhh, so what's the difference between the $40 dolls I'm seeing online and the $400 dolls you all have??" The answer? RESIN. XD I feel like such a goober for it now, but the people who answered my question were super nice about it.

That's one of the reasons I always try to be understanding when someone asks a question that strikes me as silly at first... we all have to start somewhere and learn as we go, right?

My biggest dolly faux pas so far has probably been measuring my girl while she was standing up on a table. >.< FACEPLANT right onto hard plastic. I was mortified!!!! Fortunatley her adorable button nose was A-okay. :)

    19. I remember the PMs I sent to experianced BJD owners asking this question..it was SO confusing to me.

Also did the Ducan/Duncan thing . And einon- i didn't even realize it WASN'T Archernar until you posted that! -facepalm- been saying it that was forever!

Oh god, restringing was absolutely TERRIFYING to me. It wasn't until I accidently got the S hook lodged in the neck of a doll while trying to change heads and had to take him apart to get it out, and then HAD to put him back together that I conquered that. And silly me, I assumed- you restring one body, you can do anything easily. WRONG. Luts bodies = super easy for me. Fdoll bodies = hours of me screaming and cursing.

    20. Biggest Noob Mistake? Thinking I could stop at one and Just buy two or three outfits and be satisfied
