1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Doll Faux Pas

Nov 27, 2004

    1. I think doll owners who know that their doll may look like a female to other people shouldn't feel offended when they have to correct someone. Just because he's your doll and you know he's a guy doesn't mean everyone else will. If you get aggravated about correcting people so many times, it's just the price you pay.

    2. Ooh, I did a super noobish thing when I got my first doll! I had no idea what an S-Hook was, or that it needed to be pulled through the head to attach it properly, so I ended up just kinda putting the head on without pulling the S-hook through. And I wondered why her head couldn't pose well! :doh Obviously I figured it out after a short while, but... wow I'm an idiot.

      Also, the other day I ended up taking a doll head home in a suitcase. It was one of the rolly ones so the head had quite a bumpy ride. The head was stored in a box and bubble-wrapped with a faceup protector on it... but I hadn't attached it with an elastic or anything. It was a Euclase meditation head, and I'd stored the blushed wing ears with the head (in the same piece of bubble wrap, nonetheless).

      So, I open my suitcase to make sure the head is okay and am HORRIFIED to see that the faceup protector has fallen off and his face is covered with black smudges from where the ears had touched him. Luckily I'd been smart enough to take a magic eraser with me, plus the spots were thankfully in a spot where they didn't interfere with his faceup, so it was an easy fix. Still, I feel silly. Never doing that again!

      Oh, another n00b thing. I went to a doll meet for the first time and found out that Luts is pronounced like "l-uh-ts" (as in "uh, wha?") and not l-oots (as in hula hoop). I still think it sounds better as Luts as in hula hoop. Bah.

    3. I guess I'm still pretty n00bish, as I'm still learning things everyday, even now that I have my own doll. I never ask questions unless I cannot find the answer, I don't think I've asked any questions on the board yet. Go me! I constantly forget my boy's measurements, though. I'm always looking them up. I bought his body on the marketplace without ever asking how tall it was, I just looked at the seller picture, then the doll website, and guessed which body it was. I was lucky to be right, I suppose!

      I see a lot of people consider not knowing doll names a faux pas, but I hardly know any of them. I can pick out very, very few and I don't feel like I'm in any rush to change that. I don't know Volks dolls, I don't know Soom dolls, I definitely don't know Luts dolls. I can only pick out ones that I want, but I'm so in love with my current doll that I can't seriously look at other dolls. :lol:

      I've totally learned from this thread that I can seal with things other than msc, though! Thanks!

    4. Um... When I was a super noob and hadn't even researched anything, Google searching "Ball jointed dolls cheap" and such... Yeah I know *shot* I'm still a noob but at least now I've researched and studied intensely :sweat
      ~I was young and foolish then I feel old and foolish now~
      Or uh trying to scrape sticky eye putty out with a knitting needle CAN in fact result in the needle slipping and scraping off some of the eye makeup from the beautiful faceup that you didn't do... :D go me!

      Oh, here's one that will make you go "Snort, whatta idiot!"
      So I couldn't find Luts' shipping prices (I didn't look hard enough) and for some strange reason my derpy little brain goes ahead and thinks "Oh both Fairyland and Luts provide CP stuff so they're obviously the exact same thing and I know FL's shipping is only like $35 isn't it?" Aaand I go ahead and order from Luts with that in mind, only to find that the shipping for my order was more like $60. Yah I wasn't thinking things through well enough :3 I had to beg my mother to lend me $30 to make up for the difference.

    5. I think the only noob thing I've done that is worth mentioning is that I was throwing around my sales post on DOA like it was confetti, not realizing that it could have gotten me banned from the MP. THAT was stupid.

      As for an ACTUAL doll faux pas, I told this girl how much mine was worth, and I don't know her and I think I scared her away from the hobby entirely. I feel like such an ass for not explaining anything and just dropping the price without provocation. However, I tend to blurt out things without thinking ANYWAYS, so I'm working on it.

    6. Nothing involving a doll, as I don't have one. (And I do still consider myself a BJD noob at this point. XD) But there was this one time at Project Akon 20 (in Dallas, TX) where I ran into this one girl and we ended up on the subject (couldn't be help it due to her carrying it along with a suitcase) and she mentioned that she had bought the doll 'pre-loved', to which I immediately responded with "Oh, so she's a used doll, then?".

      Needless to say, I think I kinda offended her with that comment, but she seemed to have taken it rather well. XD;

    7. did a faceup with msc semigloss instead of msc flat. shiny face. 'nuff said.

    8. i dont remember alot of my noobish mistakes... (perhaps a good thing XD)

      but my main ones i can think of...
      was noobishly thinking that BJD's were to expencive so i'd make my own.... i still have and love my Dev very much! but i learnt he ended up costing me almost the same as if i'd bought a company sculpt for him.
      and thinking i'd get only one company doll, only one!.. that one turned into two... and i now have four company dolls XD opps.. lol and alot more planned/incoming.

    9. I have absolutely no idea how to tell one sculpt from another, nor do I see myself ever doing so. I don't care if I ever do. It's not important, and I don't see how this sort of ability is seen as a common thing among DoA people.

    10. TOTALLY was convinced that Spica was a girl doll. He was the first girl doll I liked... until I realized my mistake LOL.

    11. My biggest mistake is thinking there is more room between me and a doll than there actually is. I'll go to point out a detail or to sit near the doll and knock the doll back. luckily I've never had a doll go diving for the floor, but it's still pretty horrifying to hear that thunk noise as it hits the table.

      my only other faux pas I think is the very first time I ever saw a BJD in person, I went to stroke his hair and the wig caught on my finger and fell off. I had to help the girl find the wig which wasn't easy because of all the people at the con...

    12. Thinking YOSD was puki size and always refured them as "TINYS" making an inch with my index and thumb... friend got a luagh out of that...

    13. hmmm.... I know I'll never get sculpts and such down... or even companies... those aren't really what are important to me, so my mind tosses that info out the window to instead remember the dolls character information.

      My biggest mistake, thinking I could use basic craft pastel sealant on my boy >< yeeeah so didn't work. Then, having to find somethign to remove.. finally found the nail polish remover worked wonderfully... and hand to hunt down MSC... which.. in my opinion is more $$ then the dolls!

    14. I thought bjds were all made of porcelain, silly me >.<

    15. I'm still a total noob. I am fairly proud of recognising some of the more well known sculpts. I don't care much, I like looking at the pretty pictures anyway :)

    16. I'm still having n00b moments XD Though my most recent ones revolve around trying to do my doll's face up for the first time. Accidentally used a blue-tinted nail polish remover, then had to find a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser to get rid of the blue tint on her face, and then finding out the hard way that the Mr. Super Clear that I had ordered turned out to be GLOSS instead of the UV-cut Matte that I thought I had ordered months before.

    17. I am a n00b but it took me awhile to figure out that finding something cheap and finding something that I liked were two completely different things. Saving money doesn't bother me anymore though. If it did I doubt that I would have just purchased my first doll. XD It did take me almost five months to figure that out though.

    18. Hmm... a faux pas?

      Thinking it was a good idea to use a paper clip in replacement of a crochet hook or something sturdier to hold the elastic in place when restringing.... twice *A*;; All the while reading restringing guides that say "DO NOT USE A PAPERCLIP IN PLACE OF A CROCHET HOOK OR SOMETHING STURDIER."

      I think I blacked out for a second in pure panic when both the S-Hook and paperclip got stuck in my boy's shin XD;

      That, and thinking it was a good idea to go to my first meet up before my first doll even arrived... it lead to a horrible half hour for me... >>;;

    19. Actually, Luts IS pronounced "Loots," at least according to Korean person in a thread that I now can't find :doh that talks about how to pronounce different company and doll names. Most people here in the US can't pronounce the Chinese/Korean/Japanese names right. I admit I probably butcher them as well, :sweat but at least I try!

      Anyone able to find the thread/s gets chocolate!

      Edit: I FOUND IT! http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?327577-How-do-you-pronounce...&highlight=pronounce

      YAY! Chocolate for meeeee! :chocoheart:truffle:chocoberry:whitetruffle;)

    20. When I ordered my first girl (from soom) I had to choose what zone I belonged to, and I panicked because I didn't know and it didn't show anywhere on the site, until I found out you actually had to click a zone for the list to come up.
      D'oh xD
