Doll Faux Pas

Nov 27, 2004

    1. Well.......right now im still a noob pretty much.....and I cant recognize individual dolls lol. I can tell if they are from certain companies to an extent, but yeah, cant really tell dolls apart within companies.

    2. Worst noobish mistakes I made were removing a failed face-up attempt on a GS resin doll and ending up with a nasty patchy head ... then trying to clean off the face-up on a replacement head with isopropyl alcahol (ordered without face-up but turned up with one and couldn't be bothered returning...BIG MISTAKE), which SHOULD have been fine but which had almost exactly the same effect as the acetone. ARGH! Needless to say that's the last time I try doing a face-up on anything other than a WS or NS doll!

    3. i always look stupid because of how i pronounce the name of companies and mold xD
      everyone at the meet is like: "whuuuut? xD say that again"

    4. Well I'm still new to the hobby myself. I can sorta fake pronouncing my Illusion spirit boys mold...not well, my usual response is "It has a few Qs and a Z...I think". I'm pretty good with naming Fairyland molds though ^_^ I can ID Shiwoos Ruths and if I really pay attention Shushu.

      I will openly admit that I see my dolls a bit more as their characters then their given molds, so knowing the name of the mold is kinda secondary to me. ^_^;

    5. I was such a total, total newbie that a couple days after I impulsively bought Halo at a doll show, I had to call up the shop owner and ask "What kind of doll did I buy on Saturday?"

      And then I still had no idea what "Luts Delf Kid Ani" meant ;)

    6. I STILL forget whether it's "luts" or "lutz" (probably because my boyfriend lives in Lutz, FL... I forget if he lives in "Lutz" or "Luts" XD)

      It took me forever to realize there were different sizes. I thought I had struck gold when I found a pretty MSD that was $400 cheaper than the SD I liked XD;;

      Umm, what else... When I was juuust getting into the hobby I thought BJDs were like, anime sex dolls *gets yelled at by everyone for that* in my defense I was like 12, and under the impression that any doll with naughty bits was fetishy >_>;

    7. My doll faux pas all happened here, on DoA. Chatting in the database...Turns out that I am VERY bad at starting discussions. xD But I've learned my lesson.

      A RL faux pas related to dolls would be assuming that certain people I meet could be doll-people because of certain personality traits; at which point, I would introduce BJDs to them as much as possible. Needless to say, none of it worked. I've learned to stick to my internet dollie friends, and wait for RL dollie friends to just happen. It hasn't yet...but I still have hope! <3

    8. One of my newbie faux pas was first thinking that ResinSoul sold the Mei sculpt $10 cheaper than BBB did; then someone clued me in that one site used the 'with makeup' as the default selection, and the other one said 'without makeup'.

      Another was thinking that Volks was the only company out there - then thinking it was the best company. But this was way early in the game, and my two BJDs aren't even from Volks! So lessons CAN be learned, lol.

      So far, this is all I can remember, but I probably have more.

    9. I'm STILL a noob lol, so I am going through all these stupid little mistakes right now. I tried my first face-up two days ago and I saturated the poor dolls face with MSC. Furthermore, I didn't wait for it to dry long enough, so I had giant pieces of MSC flaking off as I was trying to paint. And if that wasn't enough, I couldn't seem to scrub off the MSC to reapply it; I cleaned the face for two hours and there were still massive patches of it all over the sides of the head.

      Thank god for magic erasers. How did people wipe old face-ups without them?

    10. Ohhh boy... I don't like to think back to when I knew nothing xD;; But my noob-iest mistake was when I first discovered BJD's. My friend brought up the Luts site and showed me a pretty something or other and that was it for me. I thought Luts was THE ONLY place to buy these dolls. So I'm looking through their website and I thought that all the dolls were the same size. Maybe a foot tall. And that Kid Delf, Delf, Senior Delf were the AGES of the dolls, not the SIZES. xD I remember looking at a page for Senior Delf and Delf and going 'They don't look old...' and checking for wrinkles and all that good stuff on the faces and just being so confused. I also didn't understand why the different ages cost so much

      I thought that for forever xD Saving up for my Kid Delf and getting so excited when my friend was like 'Oh! I have dolls!'. Then I came face to face with her 90CM AOD and going OMGWTF!? D: And she explained that the dolls came in different sizes, not age groups xD Suddenly I understood.

      It still took a year after that to discover that Luts was not the only company in the world xD;;

    11. I grasped everything pretty fast when coming into the hobby (3 months ago, lol), thanks to the really helpful info on the Finnish BJD site. I browsed through maybe a hundred companies on the first day when I started looking into the thing. Also, two of my friends had BJDs and I had seen them move their eyes, take their hair off etc... But I had some stuff.
      I found Volks only more than a month after I had found the hobby... I read from a magazine that it was the company that everyone knew... And was like WTF. I thought Luts was the "best" one at first. I still don't really like Volks, though. Their site is bad, and their dolls are anime.
      Then just recently I was like, "Oh! That's DoD for sure!" and was proud because I'd learned to recognize the company's dolls... And then "Wait... DoT? What's that? I didn't recognize it after all?" XD I hadn't even visited DoD's site, and didn't know their names for the different sizes...

    12. I think my biggest faux pas dolly-wise was asking to buy a Black Ducan (still lusting over that one and only lol!), and freaking out over a lost package, which did eventually turn up okay, but doing it on the board and sounding like a complete 'tard. I am sure I have done other things too, but we're all noobs at some point, and to err is Human.

    13. Removing my first doll's faceup with...pure acetone. *winces*

      She was okay, thank goodness. But looking back at my early faceup attempts is enough to make me cringe as well. (Two black paint stripes for eyebrows, woohoo!)

    14. Tiring to resting my doll with to small of a string. :doh

    15. I think the funniest faux pas I probably made was when I was looking for a wig for my first doll. My friend sent me to Luts and said they had really nice wigs there and basically made it sound like they were the only ones that sold doll wigs separately. So I spent $20 on a wig and that's it was all annoyed when the shipping was $20 as well. I love the wig, but jeeze. I learned my lesson fast; never buy just one small item from overseas. If you're ordering something you really like, find some other stuff that you like that will fit in the same shipment. That way $20 doesn't seem so bad. :sweat

      Also, there are much better/cheaper places to buy wigs and never take someone's word that knows less than you without doing your research first. :sweat

    16. I'm not sure if this is a n00b mistake or just...something that happens. I put a dark wig on my white skinned doll, with having yet to have a dark wig stain her head. Left it for a week and I just took it off so I could get her head off to put some clothes on her, and the wig stained her head! Like...the actual wig fibers, not just the cap! I can't do anything about it either since she has a default faceup that I don't want to mess up. So now she's going to sit bald unless I want to take pictures....:(

    17. I don't know hardly any companies well and I can't tell what a sculpt is just by looking...

    18. I'm terrible about
      --pronouncing doll company names
      --Identifying sculpts
      --telling the sex of some dolls
      etc.

      Oh, well! I just hope people will forgive me! *_*

    19. I'm also terrible at pronouncing company name. I wonder if there's a pronunciation key somewhere.

    20. To this day I still don't know a lot of Japanese slang terms from Manga-anime-otaku fandom that leak into this hobby, or terms that are part of Volks' whole system.
      I am a cultured person, just not much of those particular subcultures. I don't own any resin dolls from Japan- Volks ain't my thing, and the ones I do like are just too expensive for me to justify a purchase.
      I am aware of yaoi and lolita and a lot of other things, but if people start in on the tenshi no sato and dollpa and omake and hina matsuri, I'm mostly lost.
