Doll Faux Pas

Nov 27, 2004

    1. Defanately had fun reading through the stories- and even got some questions cleared! (ie: OOAK) ^^;
      For me the first time ever seeing that large a number of dolls at Y-con's tea party in '06, was one of the most confusing and exciting experience to date at a anime convention. :sweat Could not for the life of me tell the difference between the doll companies (aside from skin color!), and thought CP's Breakaway was a new "type" of doll where parts of it can literarily "break away". Though which part and for what purpose is still unknown to this day. *_*

    2. I used to pronounce El as "eel" when I was 14.

      Yes, really. :doh

    3. hehe.*major blush* i keep putting my kids heads on backwards. i did it to my girl resently but i just cant get inspired to fix it since i switched her head back to the s-hook and its just hell to do anything with her head with the s-hook in. so for now she is ever looking sidways. ^_^;;

    4. I thought that the hair was rooted in the head first, but then realized that the same headmolds had different hair.. So I figured out it must be rooted in whatever a headcap was.. x) then I saw a bald doll and went "O_O .... ahaaaa! ^^'" xD

      Something other people do that annoys me is calling everything lolita - as soon as a dress or top or whatever has lace it's suddenly loli. But that isn't maybe so bjd-noobish, more like.. lolitan00bs. <.<

    5. - Passing up on a £100 Unoa Lusis, because the price of it wastoo high for my parents to pay on my birthday >_>;

      - The night I got my Bee-A, I was changing her clothes when I noticed the jeans had made her legs go blue! I cried and panicked and squealed for help on DoA thinking I'd ruined her forever, only to find out all I had to do was scrub her with a soupy sponge XD

      - Two days after I got my Bee-A, the lips started turning black and melting away. I clipped it with a nail and off it came >_o; So I wiped the whole thing off thinking it would be easy to do an equal-standard face-up... to this day I can't do them even when I DO have the supplies. x_X;;; And to this day, she still has no decent face-up.

      - At Christmas, I came down stairs with my Bee-A (Dawn) to see my Tender Too sat on the couch on top of my presents. I ran over, picked him up, cuddled him... then dropped him on my brother's bike, THEN noticed the make-up was melting off there too. ...It lasted a whole week before I erased that too, when it was too black to go unnoticed. I was going to just take off the lips, but I slipped and got one cheek, so I went all the way... I'm currently selling him because I've never bonded with him due to his lack of aesthetic value to me ;.;

      - When my Lishe came last year, I picked her up and got my finger trapped in her thigh joint. She was strung WAY to loosely. x.x; But I kept her like that until the lovely Kafers kindly restrung her for me a few weeks ago. She's been like that more than seven months x.x; I tried to do it myself but failed to fix anything *sigh*

      - My Lishe's waist joint popped out. I was terrified I'd broken her, so moaned at DoA. People refused to believe it had happened and demanded pictures, but all the cameras were missing in the house x.x; Kafers is the only person who can truely believe me now as she's seen where it's glued! XD

      - And lots more...

      I've been into this hobby for two years now. I still can't do anything for myself, still can't afford the hobby and I'm still a newb! x.x;

    6. I'm sure I had my fair share of newbie questions/comments/whatever...but to heck if I know what they are! XD Though, I didn't know what OOAK was until I asked someone while waiting in the DOD V-Day Event thread...^^; I also didn't realize that you CAN'T buy Volks FSC through the internet until I started a thread wondering if Lucas and Chris were the same mould and someone pointed me to a FCS guide...But I think I've done worse than that...o_O;;

      Though, my best friend's fiancee wants to start a doll business, but he's got NO clue at all about these dolls. We were talking about who would do the face-ups for the dolls he wants to sell and he was just like "you know, why doesn't anybody use real make-up? Then you can just wipe it off whenever you want...It'd be so much easier than your crazy paints." o_o;;
      Keep in mind he wants to create and sell bjds. XD *dies laughing*

      Also, a girl I go to school with saw me carrying my DOD Si around and asked if he was a super dollfie. I didn't really know how to respond at the time, cause I'm pretty sure that "super dollfie" is just for Volks dolls..?
      (I actually don't know that still, I just found out today from reading some of the responses that "dollfie" actually referes to the plastic Volks dolls! o_o;; *pwned*)
      I don't think Dream of Dolls count though...right? They're just "bjd"..>.>;;

    7. I'm still a total n00blette to the BJD world - though I've immersed myself in it for less than a year so far, so most of my mistakes I can chalk up to inexperience. :sweat

      I still always call Homme Ducan, "Duncan" when I say his name out loud, even though I know that's not what his name is! Too many "n" sounds! :lol:

      ...Actually, I think I pronounce most things incorrectly. I'll learn eventually!

      And, even though I have all of these big ideas for dolls and things, I've never used PayPal before, have no experience shipping more than a birthday card to the East Coast (let alone to the US, or overseas), have never inserted eyes, put on a wig (EDIT: I lied! Fur wigs = win!), or restrung a doll. Hell, I've only really held two in my entire life! But I've seen many in person - I'm just afraid/nervous to ask to hold, or touch any! :love

    8. Well..

      I sanded a bit of resin without worrying about the dust. I now know it is very toxic. I did know enough to never spray MSC indoors.

      I didn't realize how unexpectedly a doll's knees could bend - don't try to dress a kicky BJD while the doll is standing on your lap.

      I didn't realize how far things could fly when you finally get a magnetic headcap off - Sharmin's ears (which are only held on by the headcap) went flying.

      I didn't realize the quickest way to fix some stringing problems is to just cut the elastic, pull it out, and do a total restring.

      Carolyn

    9. Hm, I've browsed quite a lot websites/shops/resources @ internet, but I'm still a big n00b. And I don't have any BJDs yet so I don't have experience with make up or other stuff lol.

      I remember I once saw a pictures of a doll that was like 30.90, so I was like "omg that's so cheap *goes to parents*" I should have read it better.. They only sold the wig, not the doll *lol*

    10. This was so bad. I hate even admitting it and you'll all think I'm a monster xD

      I had my kid delf for about a month when my friend got her minifee. She was complaining about how tight he was so I told her to stretch out the elastic. She was like "No! Won't that hurt him?" and I grabbed the doll and as I said "No way, I do it with mine all the time!" I stretched his legs away from his torso. Right then the s-hook in his neck gave out and his peices went flying every which way across my room. D: She was screaming as I kept yelling "I'm sorry! I'll pay for it! I'm sorry!" and ran about trying to pick up the peices.

      A few minutes and many deep breaths later we had all the peices unharmed together and I fixed the s-hook and gave her a lesson on stringing. No harm done except emotional ^^;;

      I still don't think she's ever forgiven me for that one.

    11. Blimey. Everyone's really apologetic for their Noob/Newb/N00B..mistakes! I don't think it matters at all. I really hate it if/when ppl that have been in the hobby from the year dot, or think they know everything ( which they don't) look down on people that don't know all the facts about Dollfies,(yes I said it),and who cares if ppl call them that and not Asian ball jointed dolls, or get facts wrong or can't remember which doll is made by which company. What's the point of snobbery.As long as you get your message across I say it doesn't matter. Everyone learns something new every day.
      Enjoy your dolls and stop apologizing!* Off Soap Box*

    12. my biggest mistake: earasing my first doll (link) make-up, and trying to make my own....

    13. :lol: Seriously, for a long time I wondered where the OOAK company was based ... and why their dolls varied so much *_* [I asked a friend : "Who's this 'Oak' ? ", like the tree. She put me straight...].

      Also went through the whole "Whaddya mean they DONT COME WITH HAIR ?!!!" for quite some time [until I discovered the joy of owning my own 'wig sanctuary'].

      Other 'gems' :
      - wondering where there was a shop in England so I could look at the dolls before buying 'one'. [There are none].

      - unpacking my first head [Juri version one] and thinking "How much did I just pay for this itty bitty head ?!!!" [Don't worry, I got over it !].

      - just remembered : wondering what BJD's looked like after hearing my friend describe them. Tried to find them on Ebay and only found lots of accessories until I changed my search to 'highest prices first'. Saw my first CP and thought "Oh S@@t, now I'm in trouble !".

      ...you get the idea ! :aheartbea jaxa:aninja:

    14. Wow, it's so odd reading at the beginning of this thread, people who called themselves nOObs but are now the names I look to as 'seniors' on this site. ( It's a compliment! Ack! )

      I'm actually a complete nOOb myself, so whatever mistakes I'm making, I probably don't even realize it since I'm in the middle of making them! O.o'' But what I AM realizing just right now ( for some reason it took me awhile to grasp this concept ) that just because in a picture of a certain BJD it looks one way, doesn't mean that model ALWAYS looks that way. I was excited about the whole customization process, but I just couldn't understand how one could customize without specifically getting seperate pieces. Now I'm finally starting to understand. :) Dur.

    15. Haha, I do the same thing!! My brain just automatically puts the N in there. It wasn't until someone at a meetup said their doll was "Ducan" and I was thinking, "Who the heck is Ducan?? It's Duncan, DUH!" ...until I realized I was the only one saying it Duncan. Boy did I feel like a doofus. :roll:

    16. Hee hee...I have a CP Ttori and and Elfdoll Red. Two companies, same sculptor - Rainman. But they look like completely different styles of dolls. I can see why you'd double-take on it.

    17. Okay. I was just wondering, as a bjd-n00b and soon-to-be owner, what sorts of things should your doll never come in contact with?

      Such as certain glues that will mess up the resin, or a bad place to bring a doll, from experiences.

      I'd appreciate your advice! ^__^b

    18. Well, for a lot of things it's just common sense. For example: permanent marker = nono. ;)

      Cigarette smoke and extensive amounts of sunlight are also bad for the resin and cause it to yellow faster.

      Also, if you need to wipe a faceup, make sure you use non-acetone nail polish remover. Acetone eats away at the resin.

      There's definitely more to it, but as I can't remember off of the top of my head right now I'm sure others will answer to that. <_>;

    19. I've heard some super glues mess up the resin also.

      Ummm, when using ANY glue, they say you should primarily use Elmers Glue because its water solvable.

      Bad places to bring a doll? Anywhere where it can get dirty, people who think they can touch it with out permission, ummm possibly around pets?

      Its common sense most of the time.
