Doll Furniture

Apr 2, 2005

    1. I have bought a great deal beyond the basics for my dolls. (and still actively hunt for those items that are just right).
I've not ordered from Domuya though.
I've done ALOT of buying through eBay, and a bit through Yahoo japan, but that tends to bring out my spendy side so I try to avoid it unless i've exhausted all other possibilities for a hard to find item.

As for price.... this is much too broad a question i think. It's all about quality.
I won't even pay a tenth as much for a plastic kitchen set as I would for a wood/metal crafted one.
There is also detail, such as with little cabinets, do you pinch them open or do they have tiny knobs? (this is a good sign of quality too!)
Is it painted? stained? hand carved/casted?

Maybe i'm thinking too much on it XD
For simple items, I don't pay very much as I like unique somewhat extravagant things for my dolls.
I do plan to start making some of my own furniture pieces, because I'm 100% sure for what I want, i cannot find it anywhere.
Example I want very heavily Chinese influenced pieces for my MSD's little flat. However I cannot find pieces that I want, some with moderate influence, but not enough for me.
These things I will have to make myself :P

    2. I made a fainting couch for my dolls. :)

    3. That couch is lovely!

    4. Well, when I was about nine my mother and sister bought me some chairs for my American Girl dolls. There's an adorable rocking chair and a goldish colored Victorian style sofa. I also went to a tag sale with my step mother and she bought me a little café chair for $3. And a lady at church gave me 2 more rocking chairs. So I had a lot, but gave a rocking chair and the café chair to my friend.
Wow, that was a long post. You guys probably don't even care. But I'd say on average from yard sales you can get em for $2-$8. If you're making them good quality and new, I'd say charge $10 for a chair, and more for sofas and beds and things.

    5. Thank you. I took an apostasy class at a local Adult school. This couch is made of left over pine boards and scraps from my class. I did all the lasers like apostasin a reel chair.:)

    6. I usd to plan on getting full "rooms" for my dolls, back when I used to do photostories all the time, then later the chairs etc I had for them just made it easier to store them in my shelves. Now days I have a bit of a different situation, where I keep them all in a beautiful wood and glass cabinet, i still have props far beyond clothing for htem, horses, chairs, a little red wagon and other things, but in the end it rarely gets used. Once my new place is fully set up some of them may come out to be displayed in "sets" but overall I suspect they are going to stay where they are and I will not be investing much at all into those extras for them

    7. My boy....has a bucket.

I got a smallish red bucket for free from a college midnight shopping event thing...and that kind of became Aven's sitting spot in my dorm room. The rest of the time he's either on my large window ledge or on the floor in a corner.

I feel less likely to kick him by accident if he's sitting on the bucket instead of the floor, so it will do for now. (No shelf space aagh :nowords:)

Someday though I really want to find a bench or chair for him. He looks rather undignified on a red bucket...

    8. Flea Markets, Auctions and Antique stores are great places to find dolly furniture!
Right now I have my eye on a velvet red medallion sofa from a local antique store, it's only $60.00 which amazes me because the same antique store (different dealer) has Whicker Chairs,Sofa's and stools all for $150.00 each.
I wish I could make furniture.

    9. part of the doll hobby for me is creating their space in my house so i have always been interested in doll sized furniture. i currently have a bed, a rocking chair, another chair, a dresser, a tv, a gumball machine, a barber chair, and several MSD sized trunks. i also want to have a whole room devoted to them one day <3

    10. I've been thinking about making some furniture for the dolls we have, but I'm fighting over just what to make it out of since I want to keep within my rather tight budget. It's still a work in progess but when I get it finish I'll try and post some pictures. However, I have managed to obtain a pair of chairs secondhand for rather cheap.

    11. I modified a jewllery box chair (more like a small two seater couch) to have so legs so my Roku can sit on it more easiliy and more recently i increased the hight of the back and re covered the whole thing (it was made from huge stripey material in bright pink and bright mint green) into black cordery material.

but find furniature for him is hit and miss i may find the odd thing here and there

Amasun i think your icon is epic :D

    12. Most of the BJD sites I go to are out of the furniture that I want. So I've resorted to looking at Teddy Bear furniture, Mini Garden Furniture (More like mini chair plant stands), Kids Furniture (Which only seems to get me plastic fisher price stuff) and Pet Furniture. I thought about getting creative with this one and putting pillows on the back but my guy is too big for it. And I want something where his feet can dangle down comfortably.

What should I look for as far as measurements? Something in the range of 18 to 24inches tall? My guy is 30inches.

Any other ideas on where I can find furniture (for a 1/3 scale SD13+ boy)?

      Thank You

    13. I guess I need some furniture now :)

    14. Usually when i buy furniture for dolls its from antique or flea markets, and usually its for normal dolls. I got a nice bed and chair and a few props. As well as a birdcage for cheap from places like goodwill and hobby lobby.

    15. I've been in the hobby for a few years and one of the things I have always wondered about is the lack of furniture for dolls. When I think of dolls, I always picture the traditional "doll house". I know there is a market for furniture, but the suppliers are few and far between, and frankly, just plain expensive. :(

With the boon of cute "doll house" pictures following the release of the Pukipuki, I really got to thinking about furniture as something that just completes the dolls.

      My questions are;

What is your opinion of the currently available doll furniture?

What do you wish was available?

What prices do you really think are 'affordable'?
(Yes, I know this is a hobby where we spend hundreds of dollars on dolls, but for some reason $55 eyes are too expensive. )

And finally, have you ever thought of setting your doll up with traditional-styled Japanese furniture? (I know I have! :aheartbea )

I wanted to know everyone else' opinions, but wasn't sure where to ask. Hope I got the right forum. :sweat

    16. Well, for me, I wish that there was more MSD sized furniture. I have a set that I would like to use for a Pukipuki or a PukiFee if I were to get one (or two, or three...). But other than that, I've resolved to make my own doll furniture from tutorials I've found online. Seeing as my character is a Victorian vampire school boy, it's difficult to find Victorian furniture tutorials.
      <insert rage here>
As for affordable prices, I wouldn't want to pay more than forty dollars for a really nice bed or wardrobe.
And I guess I've entertained the idea of traditional Japanese furniture. I sometimes go to this Japanese...store that sells...well...everything! They have a mini-furniture section for who-knows-what reason, and it's PukiPuki sized.

    17. Good question! I personally love furniture, but it's a shame there's so little available..and you know, it's not so much the price of the furniture itself that kills me, but the shipping! For my Puki, I scrounge doll/miniature fairs and it's so cool how many pretty things there are! Honestly, I'm very tempted to get all my current dolls/characters also in tiny/puki form, not because I like tinies(..not at all, actually)but because I'd love to make their house, the way it is in my mind(which is super detailed)in mini form! Often with miniatures, you can buy little unpainted, uncustomized things for not a lot of money and customize them yourself. I wish that was available for SD's too, and even better-as a kit! Unassembled, so you can save on shipping and assemble it yourself. ...like IKEA, but with better manuals. I don't mind spending money on good quality stuff, but I'd love to customize furniture myself, but have the basic construction done by someone who knows what they're doing.

    18. I've thought about doll furniture before, but in addition to cost and shipping, they're also expensive in terms of space. Some of us don't have a lot of extra room for doll-habitats (myself included). I'm sure that once I move out of my parents' house, I'll have a little more space, but I doubt I'll have room for full doll rooms/houses.

What is your opinion of the currently available doll furniture?
Dollmore has some really cute furniture. I especially like their beds. I haven't looked too many other places. Personally, I've got an old American Girl bed at home which is in scale with MSDs, so of course there are options beyond traditional BJD dealers to look for furniture.

What do you wish was available?
That's a tough question. I guess what I'd really like for my dolls is a kitchen or living room set. Table, chairs, counters, refrigerator. There's a lot of doll seating out there but not a lot of surfaces.

What prices do you really think are 'affordable'?
If I recall, the four-poster bed I have from AG is $100 or so on their site. Dollmore beds and chaise lounges seem to be in a similar range. I don't think $100 is too expensive for quality doll furniture. Alternatively, those with the handy skills and tools to build their own doll furniture likely wouldn't want to pay that much for furniture. I hope to try my hand at custom doll furniture in the future (I always had so much fun in shop class lol), so maybe I'll be able to save myself some money that way.

The shipping costs are the worst, in my opinion. I understand that doll furniture is sometimes heavy and fragile and the shipping is probably very reasonable, but that's what stops me from getting a lot of furniture. I'd just rather not pay half again what the item was worth.

And finally, have you ever thought of setting your doll up with traditional-styled Japanese furniture?
Nope. My dolls' characters aren't Asian... I don't know why they would have traditional Japanese furniture. Well, the dolls themselves came from Asian doll companies, but the characters are either Western or fantasy-inspired. It wouldn't make sense to have traditional furniture for my particular dolls.

    19. I second MSD-sized furniture! I guess MSD-sized anything is kind of a bizarre size. You tend to see these awesome room setups for Pukis; then you see similar things (like furniture) for SD's. A really awesome setup for any doll larger than a Puki takes a lot of supplies and effort. I neither have the room or motivation for it.

I'm the kind of person who doesn't want to have to make everything from scratch. Yeah, it might cost some more, but I really am not in the mood to go learn how to build a miniature couch. It's just not my cup of tea.

    20. I actually see quite a bit of things for MSD sized dolls on ebay all the time. It's usually the American girl stuff. I usually have a hard time finding stuff for my 70cm doll since he's not exactly 1/3, but still ebay is great and if I'm patient and search A LOT I can usually find something. I think the hardest part isn't so much finding stuff, but finding stuff to match, and then you just got to get out your handy dandy customization tools.

But yes I to wish there was more in scale period pieces, as I don't always know how to customize something to make it look right.
