Doll Furniture

Apr 2, 2005

    1. Not yet, but I am considering to get a customized couch by professional for my dolls. Well, mainly because I suck in crafting diy Projects for dolls. :p

    2. Well, I don't have any furniture yet...but I think I will someday. I'll probably make my own though. I was a shop major in highschool so I've got a better than basic idea on what needs to be done and definitely know how to use the tools to make it...

    3. My dad's a part-time carpenter, my mom used to be a professional seamstress, he can teach me how to build the wooden frames, and she can teach me how to upholster everything! I haven't started any projects yet though...

    4. I love doll furniture. If it is well made, like salesman sample or quality, it is a treat to own, even when no doll owns it. I have an amazing antique dolly sized china cabinet, and some wood chairs and upholstered chairs and a traveling trunk, and a lounge and pack baskets and .....,.

    5. I have some peices, such as full length puki mirror toy box and re-ment food and table, but for my 1/3 girl I would like to make her a sleeping bag bed swag style, with a hood that can be closed to cover her face during travel. And I have a friend making her a coffee table and drawers :)

    6. I go BEYOND! I am having a blast collecting everything for my dolls-- which are in every size
[and now branching out into a lot of other kinds of off-topic dolls]. As to fair price question and where I buy --

      I tend to go for yard sale, trash day picking {I don't dig, but on nice days I might take a long walk and glance at the things on the side of the road -- I've found ALL kinds of things that way}

...thrift/consignment/second-hand stores...and on-line shopping too. I've always had a knack for re-purposing and assemblage art. So doll rooms or vignettes are super fun. I've taken smaller dolls with me on occasion to make sure of the size perspective. Though I've come to like settings even when they aren't perfect size proportions. I have things now that are suitable as a doll house for Soso!! = a doll for HER = TEEEnnny!!! all the way to small child size furniture that make it clear that a 68cm Lian is an elf/small creature.

Of course I get excited when I find some weird empty chocolate candy box storage item for a ceiling dimensional...[literally had to force myself not to stop yesterday because of something like that sticking up in someones trash, on top and clean] -- but if I found something I thought was rare, wonderful and too hard for me to ever attempt, I'd pay what most people would consider a crazy high price. So far, I haven't done that. I'd probably have to see it in person or have a lot of confidence in the person I'd buy it from to spend mucho (like over $100) bucks. But I'd happily trade in many other medium-lesser cool things for something "to die for".

Generally speaking, I'd say you get what you pay for, as long as you have studied up a bit on what is out there. A top quality, amazing thing would probably bring back most if not more than I'd pay [if ever I decided to switch to something else]. But that would also depend on how someone wants to PLAY with their dolls. Some loss due to hours of joy makes good cents ^.^ to me. ~AND, admiring from a distance a doll in cabinet can be perfectly understandable too. In my opinion doll hobby money is well invested money that turns into as much fun as anything on earth can deliver, AND is not that hard to turn back into money. Re-selling hasn't been an easy thing for me to do yet,
as I love everything -- and every ONE o_0??...
I've bought. But what I've actually consumed isn't really shown by what I've spent. If you follow my thinking? I made a lot of money buying, fixing up and reselling people size houses before I broke my back,
and I had an antique shop...selling PEOPLE size "vignettes" =^_^= I've done my store windows
      and merchandising displays
back when I could move people size stuff around. Now I have handicaps so I'm working with what I can manage. AND what helps me cope.

So I guess my expectations and reasoning might be a little different. I'm also one of the older collectors with a long and colorful history with money. That might make my orientation not so directly applicable to some other people's experiences and guidelines for answering questions like this.

    7. Laurent Doll makes great quality furniture for msds.

I have yet to find much in the SD size range, which is very disappointing.

    8. I have a bunch of doll furniture! All of this is in scale for SD size:

      - White leather sofa from Volks.
      - Wooden doll chair with upholstery from Ebay... don't know who was the original manufacturer.
      - Double bed from Ebay - it's antique and may be a salesman's sample, as it actually has a metal bedspring. It easily fits a 60 cm doll, although it is a little small for my SD16 Yukinojo.
      - Coffee table from Iplehouse.

This one is a little big - even for Dream, who is an original Bishonen House boy, and therefore, 77 cm tall - but I use it for his throne:

      - Wooden doll chair with upholstery from Ebay... don't know who was the original manufacturer.

I wish I could find in-scale wardrobes, bookshelves, dining table and chairs for SD. A lot of what's available is just a little too small for them.

    9. They seem very expensive, and relatively hard to find.
It'd be nice if to own something there's something that's not too expensive..?

    10. I have a very small flat, and I surround myselve with all of my hobbies. het takes a lot of space, and I'm not even counting my sisters things in (we share the apartment).
So no, I have no little living space for my dolls. I'm planning a dollcorner for them to stay there as a fixed place, even thou I carry them around the flat sometimes, and let them play in any corner I feel like (beds, armchairs, tables, etc). I havea few things that you would consider furniture, but I mainly use them for Photoshoots.
I have started to creat my photography corner thou....

As for buying things.... I go to second hand stores and flee makets. Nothing over 10$ enters my collection of nick nacks for dolls (wigs not included).

    11. I tried to make furniture once, then I found a nice 3 piece set on ebay *x* it had a stool(my 1/3 uses it),a solid wood chair that matches stool(my 1/4 uses it), and a little chair thats kinda out of sorts but good enough(my 1/6 uses it). I also like to look around thrift stores since I found a cute woredrobe, it was pretty much a storage/picture frame thing and I keep their extra clothes, wigs, and eyes in it *x* I am constantly looking for more furniture for when I buy new dolls.

    12. I have a pink Victorian style sofa I bought a while back, but the back of the sofa is a little too short proportion-wise for my BJDs. There doesn't seem to be a lot of furniture out there for SD sized dolls that "fit" perfectly... and unfortunately for me, I'm picky about things like that. :( Eventually I'd like to purchase a Volks loveseat, but I'll have to think some more about the price. ^^;

    13. x.x Volks' furniture cost soooo much, I found a site with SD and MSD furniture once T_T but my pc restored to factory settings and I lost all the links and name of the site. ebay has some cute chairs but i think they will be selling out soon if they havent already lol

    14. I now have a 18"doll daybed for Hazuki not sure the maker of the daybed but Hazuki loves it. Now l just need some bedding for it ans she well be all set.

    15. What is your opinion of the currently available doll furniture?
As I collect mainly SD dolls, I wish there are more SD scale furniture and at more affordable prices.

What do you wish was available?
      Everything!! Cars, bartops, bar stools!

What prices do you really think are 'affordable'?
It depends on the quality and handiwork really. If its a really well made piece of furniture, I might be willing to spend as much as the price of a doll on them.

And finally, have you ever thought of setting your doll up with traditional-styled Japanese furniture?
Definitely! I have always imagined a room setting complete with tatami mats and and katanas with my boys dressed in traditional outfits, practicing sword play...

In fact, I have a dream project and that is to turn one room into a photoshoot landscape for my crew with a lounge area, a fullly accessorised bartop and bed room.... that is a far away dream.

I have a terrible weakness for accessories and furniture. I have a few sofas, armchairs, a bed from Volks and dollmore. I have tried my hands on making a bartop too.

    16. I'd love a Victorian styled chair, almost a regal throne really, for my dolls to be photographed on or with. I plan on buying several boys & at least one girl, and I've already come up with a perfect image involving this chair - if I can ever find the perfect style and size! All my dolls are going to be approximately SD size, and yet most of the furniture is for MSD or smaller which is really irritating! I'm constantly checking ebay and looking for Salesman samples, but they're all too expensive or completely the wrong style!

    17. Hm I've been bugging my dad to make me a bed and a table or maybe even a desk. Good thing he's a carpenter so he should be able to make something great for little money. No luck so far though,he's just too busy.

    18. I love furniture, but I don't have any. I'd love to give my boys their own corner of my room...
But I have so many other things I want to do with with them first, that furniture is just out of the question right now.

But some day I'd like to find, or find someone willing to make, a four poster bed for a 70cm doll.
      But furniture perfect for a 70cm doll just sounds like a silly dream, really, since it's already so hard to shop for an SD. XD;;

    19. I love doll furniture-- but I don't have nearly as much as I'd like. On grounds of space. Myself + 36 dolls are stuffed into a 1-bedroom city apartment. ;;^^

But I do have several couches & chairs-- most of which came from either Volks or Dollmore. Some were 1/4 jewelry-boxes disguised as fully upholstered chairs from the Ross discount store; and two of the big 1/3 couches also came from Ross; but sadly, Ross haven't had any more of those wonderful things since 2005.

I find it's a great investment, to seat all the dolls in a civilized-looking manner & get all those long legs out of the way. It's also hugely important to be able to pick the STYLES I like-- I cannot stand fluff and white and pink and flowers and ruffle trim, and a lot of doll furniture is some really twee stuff. The shipping cost on a 1/3 couch is pretty brutal, whether it's shipping from VolksUSA in Los Angeles or from Dollmore in Korea. But the quality is great, they seat 3 big male dolls in a row, they have nice style, and they look lovely in photos. I consider it money well spent.

In a pinch, I stack up a few wine-boxes, or some styrofoam-block chunks from a computer box, or some stacks of castoff manga, and drape them with some attractive fabric to make a makeshift bench-sofa. ^^ Gets the job done.

If I had infinite space, I'd get a big bed and a motorcycle and a dungeon with a St. Andrew's cross in it, and a full bar and a dancefloor with smoke-jets, and all manner of fun playspaces. :D

    20. I love doll furniture, and I actually have quite a bit, but due to space constraints all but one piece is currently stored in our garage (well, it's actually a shop, since it doesn't have garage doors). This means that it has ended up covered in a liberal layer of sawdust, as my boyfriend has recently built us some new kitchen cabinets (and he started working on them without telling me about it, as a surprise, so I didn't have a chance to cover or move any of it). So I'll need to clean it all off before I can use it again. Still, sawdust from sanding pine and birch doesn't damage anything - it's just dusty.
