Doll In Mind - LOVE - Discussion II

Apr 30, 2022

    1. @krystina no, I got my Rydel second hand 11 years ago :XD:. He does not come up very often so I was delighted to see the one listed recently.
And thank you! I just updated his faceup yesterday to give him the black lipstick again and I'm very happy with it. I was worried to show too detailed a portrait though because he also has bruising on his face and I don't want it to disturb anyone. I also think I found the best eyes for him, makes a huge difference. And I'm just feeling so smitten :blush
Better pic but CW for the bruises:

Anyway, I feel this, I am so super sad I can't adopt either. But my financial situation is much too desperate. Definitely sounds like you have your hands full too! That's nice though, lots of good projects! Hope you will share pics sometimes as they come together. There's definitely nothing wrong with stashing the floating heads and rotating through them . I know my Lloyd will be fine I'm just personally irritated with myself over it. If my situation gets better I'll probably start looking for a new boy body I like because I could definitely use one more for all the extras.

    2. Wow 11 years ago :blush He definitely looks like a character :chibi Yes I agree, projects are always good. I’m hoping to try my hand at sewing, I want to make an outfit I had in mind for Anima :chibi What body you’re thinking of getting? I want to make Annelise a boy- his head is a bit on the small side. I’m thinking a Dream Valley body - I hear the match is really good.

    3. What kind of outfit is it you are thinking of? Sewing is a fun adventure!
I really like the way a lot of dream valley bodies look in the pictures. That seems like a good choice! I used to have Annelise actually. I bought two girls heads a few years back during an event but ultimately sold both of them because they had smaller heads and I pretty much gravitate to big heads. If the resin is a little mellowed I know it looks good with the dz normal pink (at least tried this for Lloyd at some point). Ugh honestly I don't really have big dreams when it comes to bodies anymore. Even under the better scenarios I can imagine I don't know if I will ever have a very big budget. There are some cheaper options I like and I like old second hand bodies often, the 60 ish cm not too muscular kinds so I'll find something again one day is basically all I'm hoping lol. I am trying to keep around the bodies I like better and are more versatile with different heads so we'll see what I think of.

    4. I went to the Barbie Museum in Vegas during Xmas vacation and took a lot of inspiration photos. There are at least 3 outfits I’d like to make variations of :D The one I really want to make is “Best to a Tea” outfit. Looks a bit out of my skill range but I’ll give it the old college try. Lol yes I was thinking of just having a collection of heads and sharing the bodies on my dolls too, it would definitely be less expensive and take up less room :kitty2

    5. Ahhh that's so cool :D I would love to see a barbie museum. I really love barbie, especially the vintage looking models and their amazing outfits! Well at least making the clothes will be easier in not barbie scale, trust me. Lol.
I have mixed feelings on my ideal situation with dolls and bodies. I think what it boils down to is I'm still conflicted because having about 20-25 1/3 bodies is a lot of my space :XD: (it was that much last year I think? Approximately) but while having fewer bodies is good for space and I appreciate that, and simply not having to look at so many dolls on display at once, I think of my characters in different world groups, so if I have two characters who are supposed to be friends and I can't photograph them together because I accidentally ended up with them using the same body, that's a problem :XD: And that's the position I'm in currently with poor Lloyd. I might be able to shuffle someone off something in a way that solves that problem but I'm not sure.

    6. Yes the Vintage ones were my favorite I also loved the 90’s styles too <3 lol I feel the same way too :sweat I keep thinking- I don’t need 20 “full” dolls but then at the same time, I feel they’re not “complete.” Is a dilemma :XD: lol but wow 20-25 dolls :XD: i think I have 5 full dolls (I’m thinking to sell a body and one full doll) and countless floating heads :XD: I’ll sell/ trade tge two but somehow end up with 4 more by the end of this year XD

    7. Myself, I haven't had only five bodies since eleven years ago ... If I have advice it's definitely be careful. :XD: It's so hard to go back once you have amassed the army of full dolls. Hopefully you can get what you want and not have to get overwhelmed, that's the best outcome!

    8. Hey guys, this is Melora, the love of my life:

      She's a Leonora on a Supia body.

    9. Oh hello Melora and @GRtoMost :D she's beautiful! I really love her hair very much :aheartbea

    10. She is lovely :blush I think you styled her very well. And its so wonderful to see a Leonora too- I don’t think I’ve seen any owner pics of her on DoA <3

    11. Just wanted to show off my latest guy :D Doll in Mind Bbjorn - he's been my grail ever since i saw him sold out on the DIM website so long ago :whee: I think he has an original faceup from DIM, it looks like his promo pics. As much as I want to leave it on him, I will most liketly get it redone as some parts of the MSC seems uneven (I assume from age). He is borrowing a Universdoll body (awful match). I'm body hunting for something close to Luts Muse body measurements.

His cute ears. He's got the most adorable profile :whee:

      Such a cute face :D

    12. @krystina he is absolutely wonderful :D I'm so thrilled you could welcome him home! :chibi I'll try to get some resin comparison pics in with Lloyd tomorrow as we discussed and I will probably just link here so that if it helps anyone it will be accessible
Doll in mind really did have such amazing faces, and I can't remember all the old ones so by now it feels like falling in love with these sculpts all over again when somebody shows one.
My Lloyd desperately needs a better Faceup. You could probably get something done similar to that default if you like it on Bijorn. There is often something really pleasing about the older Faceup styles. When I'm working on my older sculpts sometimes I have fun referencing old styles in some respects.
I have been feeling so sad about my Lloyd that I took the Mirodoll body I was not using currently and decided to try to thoroughly suede it with both felt inserts and hot glue and I may have gotten it to where it won't make me miserable now! Lloyd will spend some time on it and I'll see how I feel. He looks cute on it at least :whee:

    13. Thank you @AlisonVonderland :D o yes take your time getting the pics and thanks again- i will post him in my IG later (and finally get to use the DIM tag :XD:) and see if I can drum up some more people to post their DIM beauties:XD:

yes I agree about the older face ups- it was definitely the iconic style of face up painting early in the hobby. I’m still debating to do something more modern style or have someone paint him similar to that early style. I have all the time to decide.

lol I bet Lloyd is relieved to have a body again :XD: Wanted to ask too, does your Lloyd have a big noggin? BBjorn has a pretty big head I was surprised - especially when compared to DIM later releases like Annelise. I like it (get more doll for your money :XD:) except wigs are a bit strange. 9-10 is a bit too big but 8-8.5 look strange. Like the head isn’t just wide but has height. I may have to experiment looks for him.

    14. Lloyd wears a 9/10 here. That being said, different companies have slightly different shapes and sizes of wig so sometimes one company fits way better than another. leekeworld makes 9/10 pretty much too big to securely stay on anyone for example. Very annoying. I know what you mean about a "tall" head but Lloyd doesn't have one. He is very round. :XD: he is one of many of my old huge headed dolls that I call "the pumpkin heads." And that's actually something I love, the big old heads. his other very large friends here are CH choa (the largest I think), Ariadoll Narvy, Nabarro Yakumo and Doll Leaves Noir. Back several years ago when there was a bit of a DIM boom and you could order lots of newer sculpts I actually ordered two girls and was ultimately just disappointed that they had such small heads. (7/8 wigs!) They were beautiful but I wanted those big Lloyd heads :XD:

I've just woken up with a headache very cranky but resin comparisons later. However here is Lloyd on his surprisingly improved body.

For posterity I'm not sure which resin color this is and he doesn't match perfectly but I don't notice when he's assembled. It's one of mirodoll's "normal" colors. He does work well on the body because it's very well compatible with necks that have a very small circumference (compared to other guys.)
Ridiculous though it is buff Lloyd is an undying favorite for me :XD: I do want to repaint him because he has such a sad hasty Faceup I made in my 45F kitchen a few winters ago (the sadness is much more evident in person compared to my work when I'm actually trying) but I'm excited to dress him up today and just admire him. :aheartbea

    15. I think that is why 9/10 looks big- the only 9/10s I have is Leeke :sweatI will try some other companies (there’s some mohair’s I’m interested in :chibi). Wow that’s main character physique Lloyd :D lol he looks good on that body :whee: He need to show off more XD lol the pumpkin heads :XD: I didn’t know that about Choa- I miss seeing Custom House- they had such beautiful fashion and pictures. I used to have an old Hautedoll magazine with Choa on the front I used to admire and want. I wish I still kept that magazine somewhere- it’s fun to look at. What kind of style you think you’ll paint Lloyd? The faceup he has is really pretty. He’ll look good in any style- he has the perfect cat eye shape :chibi

    16. I really think for Lloyd I like the general appearance of this Faceup I would just like to actually do it nicely :XD: right now since I'm still a bit uncertain his style fate though possibly I will dress him in an eclectic/ historical/ fantasy style combo... I have to do something I feel is versatile so that it goes with him if I change ideas more. I try to get several years of mileage out of each Faceup. But also knowing me maybe I'll do something crazy... We'll see what Lloyd wants.
Haha Lloyd is such a reclusive and apathetic one for main character energy. I love him so much though. I can't believe I've had him a decade. Maybe I should give him a pectoral tattoo :XD:
I love old doll pictures. I wish I had a bunch to put up. Like the old postcards you used to get from companies too! Choa is a really lovely enormous head. I came to have her super randomly a couple years ago and I'm grateful for the opportunity. :whee:
I used to get a lot of wigs from licht and their 9/10 is usually better than leeke. Also if you find Monique gold 8/9 fits and there are old brands still floating around that fit well too. Mostly I think leeke is just bigger than any other brand. Himekazura from Mandarake I would try 8/9 because it runs big and not very stretchy but Lloyd is actually in one of their 8/9 that I just stretched out slightly too much by giving to a big head.

    17. Lmao pectoral tattoo for lil reclusive Lloyd :XD::whee: That sounds like a good plan for his faceup- something versatile :chibi Thank you for the wig tips I’ll definitely try finding some of those :D

    18. Ok I'm back with the resin comparison. I want to be clear that i think all these resins are older, the Angell studio I've had second hand years already too, so it's specifically helpful for aged colors but there are a lot and I would consider all these quite similar IRL in the pale pink and neutral category. I forgot to add my Loongsoul 2012 env. Pink because I suck :sweat if someone needs it just ask.

      IMG 20230213 145924 — Postimages
If anyone looking wants to save these and re-upload it anywhere for personal or information purposes please feel free. And I apologize for the kind of pathetic state of some of these headbacks :sweat
All my dolls stay mostly out in ambient indoor lighting so it's a pretty typical representation of reasonable but not excessive aging over this amount of time.
      Good luck!

Tldr: I think that old nobility doll and doll leaves are almost as close as it gets to old DIM after all have aged

    19. Thank you @AlisonVonderland this is awesome :D I’m amazed at the DIM doll resin from pre ‘12- it’s still pink and a bit more vibrant than other older resins don’t you think :chibi I noticed my BBjorn has a yellow tinge (I’m thinking it’s because of the sealant discoloration, but his headcap is pinker like your DIM head cap. I’m hoping when I clean it, it will go to the pink tinge. If no, it looks like a match to Volks :love. I’m just curious, is the Longsoul environment pink a good match too along with doll leaves and nobility? I don’t need a pic- just eye ballin it will do :XD: I rather like the Loongsoul body structure :chibi

    20. DIM resin is so light and pink when new that I think it really does look nice 5 and ten later (and. Lloyd is probably more like 15 yesrs old? I don't know). When it was relatively new compared to now it was really closely similar to the new Loongsoul env. Pink doll that I had.
I can dig Chelsea out and give you a reference pic of colors soon of you need. They are still close but I'm not sure how close compared to the others I already showed. And the LS resin new, unless they changed it, is shockingly pale bubblegum pink. LS environmental will age more unevenly and noticeably if you leave it on display, just a word of warning. But if you get compatible levels of aging it should be a good working hybrid.
If the face only is much more yellow, especially since the Faceup is a default and we know that makes it old, it's almost certainly the sealant and nothing more. On my dolls I've noticed the headbacks don't tend to become a totally different color even though they are not really in the light but you can see the inside of the head is still closer to the old resin colors on some. :XD:
