1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Doll Nudity Warnings - Why?

Jun 20, 2008

    1. Because *cue the music* This Is The Song That Doesn't End!

For me it comes down to two things: Common courtesy and respect. If you don't have the common courtesy to add a tiny warning to your thread, and respect for other people who don't see things exactly the way you do, then I have zero respect for you at all because you clearly don't respect anyone else.

I also think some people just want their to be an issue because then they get to play the "oh poor pitiful me" card. But again, if poor pitiful you can't have the common courtesy to put "NSFW" on your gallery posts, then you get what you deserve when people are upset about it.

    2. Logic fail. If a thread is not labeled in a way that indicates nudity is present, one cannot "choose" to avoid such nudity. Or perhaps I missed the memo about DoA membership granting special psychic abilities.

I find it sad that there are people out there so convinced that they know everything about everyone else's circumstances that they think they can unilaterally decide what is and is not appropriate for an entire hobby community. Tunnel vision is not a virtue.

    3. Why is it really so hard to add a nudity warning if you have a photo of a naked doll in your thread? There are sites for sex dolls and doll porn. They are meant to look like people. Are you really so offended about having to mark your thread for other people who don't want to look at resin boobs or penises?

You are on the bus for TWO HOURS. Most office jobs are EIGHT HOURS. That's a bit different. I'm not saying people can't go for a few hours without internet, but really its not the same. In an office people are given breaks when they can eat and relax for a bit because it is a very long day. If they want to relax by looking at doll photos how is it bad? Their workplace permits it because forcing them to work for a solid 8 hours is rather counter productive. After a break they are refreshed and ready to get back to work and maybe have new ideas. Also most lunches are unpaid so that point is moot, btb.

Also s0yuz I don't really understand your argument. We don't need warnings because private internet is in most places and most people can get private computers? That's not a very good argument. Some people still have their computer in a public room and internet is not available everywhere. I lived in a very rural area and we had very few options. I used the computers at the library and school growing up and I didn't want to be flashing naked doll photos for anyone to glimpse and think I was looking at porn. I take my dolls out in public with me so I'm hardly embarrassed of my hobby.

    4. No, I don't think it does at all. It goes back to "I can be fired for looking at naked dolls", sure. I don't see how not wanting to get fired has anything at all to do with be embarrassed of a hobby. Heck, I know I'm not embarrassed to love these dolls! :)

    5. Why is this even an issue? It's common courtesy. Some people share home computers and don't want parents or younger siblings or other people they may live with copping an eyefull of doll genitalia. Others don't want to see your dolls without clothes (shock horror, how could this even be possible?!?! /sarcasm). Even if it's 'tasteful nudity' some people are just not into it, and damned if you think that they are immature or prudish because of it, it's a personal taste, and they have a right to it.
They can't make an informed decision whether to click the link or not unless there is a warning. So suck it up, it takes less than three seconds to type the word 'nudity' or 'nsfw'.:daisy

...I wonder why there isn't a thread arguing about warnings for gore mod threads.

    6. Indeed, labelling nudity is purely courteous! It's like having the type of doll, and what they are doing in the post title. It's so you can know what you are going to look at. Pure and simple :D

    7. I was not talking about myself personally.

Also, I own one of those little Acer netbooks (bought one when they first came out), and believe me, people can easily see what is on the screen if they are behind you.

Is it really so wrong to use the internet in public? What about people who don't buy things like computers or internet because they want to save their money for something they want more (such as dolls) and they use the internet only in free locations like libraries. Did you know that you can be kicked out of a library for looking at nudity (in some locations).

What if this is the only thing that person will use the internet for? Then a computer is especially not worth it. For example, my boyfriend does not have a computer. He could afford one easily, but he chooses not to buy one because anything he needs for his hobbies he can get either from using his work computer or one that belongs to someone else. Who's to say that there aren't people who wouldn't be in this situation as well.

      And something else:
I used to live in an area not more than an hour away from Philadelphia, a major city. We could not get anything faster than dial-up for a really long time. My area wasn't even rural. Totally Suburbia. And yea, if you've ever tried to look at a site with lots of pictures while using dial-up...it can take ten minutes to load. Libraries and school were my places to look at sites that I went to since I couldn't really do so when I lived there. Note: places not appropriate for nudity. Again, there are lots of people in this situation.

As Lelite mentioned a few pages back, is it really so hard and offensive for someone to put a small NSFW on their threads?

    8. I think it's more for if you're a work or school or a people heavy enviornment browsing DoA (which I totally do) so that someone that wanders by isn't like WHY IS THERE DOLL PORN ON YOUR SCREEN?! or something o_o

    9. Compared to someone having to buy a whole new computer, I think being polite enough to put a nudity warning, is a pretty small thing to ask? How did all this OMG buy a computer come up anyway O_o That's a bit of an overreaction.

    10. Showing nude dolls is ok if you know what you are getting! I showed my new boy doll to an artist friend and even she was oooh look! then she wanted to show her man the doll cos of its face up ( done by me) and he got all giggly when he realised it had a penis! shaped but not painted...I felt a teensy bit silly and embarrassed, heaven knows what I would feel if I was surprised looking at it on the computer? I am not a prude and bodies are amazing but other people can be weird about this stuff. Making a judgement on a thirty second glance.

    11. The computer part came up because some seem really against the idea of public internet, which is really a wonderful innovation for anyone who does not have a computer or internet for whatever personal reasons of their own.

And you're exactly right. It is an overreaction.

    12. Wow. Just wow. Your ignorance of the entire world outside of your own is so remarkable that I find it hilariously ironic that you would call anyone else immature.

This is an international forum. Not everyone lives in the US. Not everyone in the US lives in an urban area. And this might shock you, I know, so brace yourself for it: Internet access is still an issue for many people in the world.

I know. Shocking. There's a world beyond yours.

At one point of my life, I lived in Tasmania. That's a whole state in the country called Australia, just in case you didn't know. The internet access there is terrible. I lived in a hostel and could only use the public computer room. Long story short, I relied heavily on the labelling of photos in the gallery so that I could safely look at doll photos without being banned.

I think this is a case of you having ONE INCIDENT happen to you and then you're using it to apply for everything. Yes, your thread was moved so warnings were rendered moot. Obviously a mistake. But that was one case. Because of your one case, everyone should not label their photos for nudity? What exactly is your argument here and are you sure it makes sense?

    13. I understand it in the normal gallerie, beause you can´t know if they are naked or not, and if you don´t want to see it... (or don´t want others to see)
      I really don´t think it´s necessary in the box-opening-gallerie.
Of course they are naked! We all know they nearly never come clothed! I don´t understand it...

    14. This is really getting off-topic and ugly.

It IS common courtesy to label threads wherein nudity can be found. Period. Whether or not you feel that's ridiculous and the reasons you feel that way....arguing about it isn't going to change the fact that it is common courtesy to label Gallery posts.

    15. I don't mind labeling posts, personally. I see it as a win win situation--people who don't want to see it will know not to look, which potentially saves me from getting flak from other people. On the flip side, people who really are interested in whatever's in the post will know to click on it.

I'm lucky I suppose, in that I have a computer with internet access at home where I only live with my dog. I can look at whatever I want in complete privacy. However, for people that don't have the luxury of privacy (and that can be for a whole host of reasons), it's nice for them to be forewarned. It's sad that there are people out there--and I don't mean bjd people, but people in general--that do get so hung up about things like doll nudity, especially nudity that is clearly in a non-sexual context (US culture seems to have a big hang up with nudity period), but unfortunately they do, and we have to work around that. Labeling posts is an easy way to do that--you get to post what you like, but you're giving people the opportunity to decide whether or not they should click on it.

    16. There are people on DoA who don't have a doll yet. There are probably people here who had to choose whether to spend the $400 they'd saved on a doll, or on a portable computer. And there are definitely people here who don't have any control over their internet access at home: teens living with their parents, students in (many) school dorms, folks in military or employer housing.

It's really just basic courtesy. Give people the ability to make an informed choice to click on your thread. Don't risk someone's employment or future internet access because you disagree with forum policy.

(Obviously this does not apply if your thread is merged with another, or moved to the wrong subforum without your knowledge. You don't have control over the situation at that point.)

    17. To take this one step further than "browsing dolls at work"...

I rely on the warning tags just as much as the sculpt tags, and not because I browse galleries at work. Maybe I'm not in the mood to see nudity or violence. Maybe I'm not interested in Volks sculpts, or vampires, or elves, or what have you. Or perhaps I'm only looking for couples pictures, or outdoor shoots, or whatever! Any tag is simply a means of conveying what the link contains: [picture theme] [sculpt name] [warning tag].

    18. This post rubs me wrong.

I work 4 hours a day in a gigantic warehouse with no real ventilation at the complete mercy of the outdoor temperature and humidity on forktruck driving around in claustophobic and acrophobic inducing conditions working with dusty and greasy machine parts that weigh anywhere from 5 ounces to 50 pounds.

But I don't complain. In fact, I take pride in the fact I work a job most would scoff at, and I get paid very well for it.

I commend you for putting up with that stressful mess of a job, but you're not the only one out there is that kind of boat. You don't have any place to put certain people down becuase you think your job is harder. Every faces certain stress and pains at their work. That's just part of life.

Oh, and just in case you were wondering, we have internet access at the warehouse for us to use when we are on break or lunch hour, just like how most would take advantage of the internet in an office job. So even at my job, the common courtesy of placing a nudity warning still applies.

    19. I read only the last page and a few pages in the front in the past. But this is my 5 cents worth.

Let me be bratty for a moment. I WANT LABELS WHETHER OR NOT I'LL SEE DOLL NUDITY BECAUSE I SAY SO AND I WANT SO.

For the logical point. I don't come to DOA much. And when I do, it's because I got bored and there's nothing to do, or that there's something of utmost urgency that I need to consult DOA for. So, background. Singapore is a freaking small island with a bloody huge population.

So, I got bored one day at a fast-food chain with internet access. I decided to pull out my laptop and surf DOA's galleries. A title caught my attention. I clicked. While waiting for it to load, I'm either eating or drinking. And I got choked because the first thing I saw was a nude doll.

People are so gonna turn and look to see what's the commotion. And they're gonna see the nude doll on my screen. So what my screen's 12 inches wide? It's a photo. Not words. It's even clearer.

Let's say internet cafe. I'm there to play Granado Espada. I'll get bored of staring at my characters train and decide to surf internet. Make full use of the large screen and good graphics card. And again, I click a title. I see a nude doll. On a large screen. If I'm lucky, no one will see. If I'm not, sure as hell someone's gonna think I'm using the computers there to surf for porn or something.

I do care about what people think when they see the nude dolls. Because I'm sure as hell that the first thoughts they have won't be "oh~ that's pretty artistic." It'll be "oh my god~ These people buy these dolls for the sake of this?!" Well...my people's mentality is that...using my own parents as guinea pigs by exposing them to nude dolls' photos.

I do care what they think because I don't want them to think that owners use their BJDs for the sake of stripping them or to do porn-y stuffs with.

Personal reason: I don't want to be eating or drinking and then seeing some blushed nude dolls. They'd be very realistic and seriously not what I want to see when eating.

Therefore, labels are something that is a need. And in case people are having issues about me surfing DOA outside and not at home... I do that because to me, DOA is a safe forum. Therefore, I dare to do that. It shows how much I trust the people on DOA.

    20. I like the labels, because if I don't want to see nudity, yaoi, etc then I won't click on the threads with this warning.
