Doll Nudity Warnings - Why?

Jun 20, 2008

    1. there's also the particulars of the shot. I've looked at a few photos of blushing that, because they focus on the torso, don't really show the joints the way a wider-shot photo taken strictly for artistry might. while it might be apparent that it's not a real human being, many people would find it equally inappropriate to be looking at drawings or animations of nudes in public places, especially on a computer (somehow it just doesn't seem so inappropriate if you were, say, leafing through a coffee table book).

    2. I think nudity warnings are a great help to a lot of people, but I don't understand when and why the "bare male chest" warnings started being added.

    3. In a rehash of what's been said already.. Yes, we have dolls that are anatomically correct. Maybe some of us live in countries where that is easily accepted, not all of us do. [When the "Archie Bunker's Grandson" doll came out in the mid-70's, I remember what a to do there was about it because of the fact that he was anatomically correct. And yes, I realise it was because it was geared toward children but still, anatomically correct causes problems in some societies.] The fact remains, the world is a big place and not every country has the same views on nudity and not every person has the same ideas as to what's appropriate onscreen, regardless of whether it's in private or public. Even if we are fine with it, those around us who possibly can see our monitor screens may not be and we do have to consider them if we view pictures in a place where that possibility exists.

So, then there's "If there's a time and a place to view things, then why are you viewing it at work/school/other 'inappropriate' place?" hanging in the air. For me, I'm lucky in that I have a computer at home (probably most of us do). However, not everyone does and some people are left to only be able to view things at work, at school, the library, the internet cafe, whatever.

In the end, it's more polite to label something as having nudity than not.

    4. Also, sometimes people have free time with a computer when they're not at home. I'm in college and sometimes I have between two and four hours between classes and don't decide to go home, so I sit in the library with my laptop. DOA is perfectly acceptable viewing at the library as long as there are warnings for nudity, which is why I appreciate them so much.

    5. Well, I have a laptop and I check DOA pretty indiscriminately wherever I'm at. I don't pay any mind to naked dolls most of the time; but when I'm in class, I think it would be in poor taste to let the people behind me see what looks like a naked person on my screen. Not that I haven't seen other people browsing porn sites during class, it's just that I don't want to be one of "those" people.

So yeah, nudity warnings are appreciated for those of us who just can't wait until the top of the hour to check DOA.

    6. QFE. That's exactly how I feel. I have my own laptop and everything so it's not a big deal about looking at naked dolls but I really don't look over my shoulder all the time-all I need is my parents looking, not seeing the joints at first and thinking "OMG OUR DAUGHTER IS A PERV!" XD

    7. Honestly, if I'm looking at a thread with photos of naked dolls, the first thing random coworker walking past 5 feet away is going to think is "breasts?! penis?!" not "Oh, I can clearly see a joint all the way over in the elbow there, it is most certainly a doll!" For people who are used to BJDs it's obvious they're dolls. For someone who's never seen one before they can look surprisingly lifelike, especially if it's a gallery shoot where someone has tried very hard to hide joints in shadows or under cloth and hair. I myself have absolutely no problem with doll nudity, it's A-OK in my book. But I don't think everyone I work with would feel the same.

And, as I got into an argument about once, the people at work don't really care if I browse the internet, look at livejournal, read forums, etc etc. But they wouldn't want me to be looking at porn while I'm at work. While nude doll shots posted on DoA are almost certainly NOT going to be porn due to the community's rules, it's not something worth arguing with my boss over. If he thinks it looks inappropriate, I could very well be gone and that would be that. : / Why risk it?

    8. What has already been said: I think it is helpful if using a public comp or with friends who would not understand.
I don't mind nude dolls so long as it is not overly sexual-doll porn. But I guess some people feel uncomfortable. There is that thread about girls who own boy dolls and I thought aother so some people must not like it, lol

    9. I have younger kids that like to hover over my shoulder when I look at dolls and when I see the warnings, I know not to look there. I think it's common courtesy.

    10. QFE. I like browsing DoA at work when I have some downtime. I work at a school. If I had no way of knowing what threads were going to lead to nudity, I would no longer be able to check it at work because there is no such thing as "innocent" nudity at a school.

    11. Man, i really don't get the warnings... if it's something erotic ok, but nudity? O_o;;; even if you are at work, it's a doll ><!

*sighs* Everyone here has seen a naked doll, so it seems a bit hypocritical to think it's offensive. If we who own dolls behave like that, people who don't will just follow the example. If anyone says to me 'eewww that's indecent!!" i would just tell them it's a doll and they should reevaluate their morals cos there's something wrong with it.

But sometimes it's not a warning, it's like saying 'here is a pic of my saint wearing boots' ... 'here is a nude pic of my saint'. *shrugs*

    12. I totally agree!! Yes, it's only a doll and the bits are not even the size of my long pinkie nail (Sorry dolly boys:(). But if some grown adult has a panic attack from seeing "Reproductive parts" then I would seriously take them back to school or educate where their parents failed or were too scared to do.
Now I know kids are a different matter especially in this country so I would say that the warnings have there purpose. But personally...warning or not if someone who has no interest in BJDs sees "Doll nudity", 80% of the time they will want to look. Curiosity kills the cat. ;)

    13. It always puzzled me. I don't really consider it 'nudity' because it is a plastic doll. I don't understand why a plastic um.. Wang.. Should invoke a different emotion than a plastic nose, when its just a regular non-sexually themed photo. I don't think at all about seeing doll breasts or genitals because they are dolls, and very obviously so imo, its not something I even notice. I don't see the problem with kids seeing nude humans so I certainly don't understand the problem with seeing a ball jointed doll with no clothes.

Honestly I wouldve thought anyone browsing doa at work would get in trouble for not working regardless if there's a doll boob on the screen or not :)

That said, I have no problem posting warnings since obviously, many people want them... But I admit it makes me shake my head every time I see it! I guess I can understand just not wanting to deal with passers-by who may misinterpret the image, but avoiding them for personal reasons is just beyond my understanding really. To each their own! :)

    14. There is a rule for this forum which asks you to include a warning in your post if you are showing a nude doll, same as for blood and gore, I think. :)

    15. Well... I don't think most people are OFFENDED by dolly bits. But if there's a 13 year old that loves dolls and joins this forum, his or her parents might be a little irked if they found pictures of anatomically correct dolls in their history. Or say a BJD collector is at work on their break - I think their boss would be a little weirded out if they walked by the cubicle only to see a doll peenie on their employee's screen. XD I don't think you could do much to convince your boss that you weren't looking at porn.

Not to mention, nudity makes some people a little uncomfortable, and it's just common courtesy to warn people.

    16. What else really needs to be said? But yeah, I appreciate those warnings too if I don't feel like seeing perky dolly boobs or whatever. It really is just a courtesy thing even if we all have seen nude dolls before, whether we own them or have looked at pictures on the site

    17. I totally understand TrekkieGrrrl's point of view perhaps because I grew up in Denmark too. I think the first anatomical correct dolls for children came in the mid Sixties in Denmark. It was of course baby dolls - not adults. I actually had a book explaining about where the babies came from with drawings of nakid adults when I was 3 - 4 years old - and I was born in 53.

On the other hand I also agree with chibaraki when she says:

I think that posting a warning is such a small thing to do so if it bothers just a very few people not to have them we should do it anyway. After all people here come from all over the world and we have to respect each others differences.

The measure of civilisation is how you treat you enimies, not how you treat your friends. It's so easy to show respect to the people you agree with - it's when you dissagree it gets hard and that's when it's most importaint.

    18. I like having the warnings personally. Some people say that there's nothing wrong with kids seeing nudity, but if the kids you're around aren't yours, who are you to decide that? My sisters like to look at the dolls with me and they're still young so I don't think they need to look at nude pictures. So what if it's artistic, I mean, they're not going to see any art in that. The first thing they'll tell mom and dad is, "Daddy, do you have a hotdog under your pants like the dollies big sis was looking at?"

For me it's safer in the house the more warnings I see.

I don't get offended by the nudity. But I don't like being surprised by it either. Call me squeamish or whatever, but I just don't like looking at it. I don't find it attractive, I don't find it artistic most of the time, so I'd simply prefer not to see it. That's just me.

    19. Personally, I'm not one for looking at nude dollies.

It doesn't offend me persay, just not into that end of the dollie art spectrum, unless the doll has some interesting body work (Like nice body blushing or tattoos)

    20. So here's an associated question... Since it doesn't bother me, in fact it never occurs to me that it might bother someone. Would someone be "right" if I forgot to note naked in title and they got angry at me? Really until i saw this post it never occured to me all at. I found it funny to see little dots on the photos on company websites. I was like, "huh????"
