Doll Nudity Warnings - Why?

Jun 20, 2008

    1. I think the nudity warnings are good for the sake of it being NOT work-safe/school-safe... While it's true that dolls are art and bosses wouldn't flip over a painting of the Sistine Chapel on your computer, it's also true that nekkid dolls aren't really socially acceptable forms of art and it could possibly be LESS understood than actual porn... When I pointed out to my mother that my Lahoo was anatomically correct, she acted as if I was some sort of weirdo for wanting a doll like that. It's not like it can be put to any use (I mean, really, wtf!)

But yeah, personally, I'm not at all offended by doll nudity. I think it's kind of ridiculous. It's no different to me than looking at a picture of their thumb. It's about the same size, anyway... just a little plastic lump.

But if people who stumble by here are offended by it, then that's also a good reason to have a warning in your topic thread, I guess? It doesn't hurt, anyway. I'm sure some parents, for whatever reason, don't want their underage kids to see... naked dolls...

...yeah I don't know. But I can understand the need for work-safe/school-safe environments. I just think it goes a little overboard. They ARE just dolls. I think that it depends on what situations they are representing, because the dolls are usually representing real-life situations -- but sometimes the background stories and situations are far more intense than a nekkid doll just sitting on the floor. But the nekkid doll gets the warning.

    2. Personally, I like the warnings because I like looking at nude photos, so I know right away which gallery pics I'll be looking at first, LOL. I love looking at the human body, even if they're dolls (they're pieces of art, really and they should all be displayed in their au naturale glory sometimes IMO), and there are so many people on here that take such gorgeous pictures. So I guess I appreciate the warnings because it's usually what I enjoy looking at.

***Now, I don't want you to think I sit around looking at porn, doll or human, but it really is an appreciation of the body. It's beautiful, what can I say? I like looking at beautiful things.***

    3. Because they have naught bits and penises and vaginas are BAD! *GASP*

Honestly, I haven't the slightest. It's a stupid cultural taboo. "Ooh, being naked is bad. Bad bad bad. Because you can't be doing anything good if you're getting naked. The body you were born with and will live in all your life MUST BE CLOTHED."

Bah. I've come to realize the grand majority of people on this forum are over 18 and we have all seen, at one point or another, the bodies of ourselves, our children, our husbands, wives, or significant others. It is natural, real, and we're all naked under our clothes--Some of us might be naked right now! All the hulla-baloo comes down to religious roots and fear of sexual identity and all those wonderful subjects no one likes to talk about. :P

    4. I'm thankful to nudity warnings. I still live with my parents and i guess they wouldn't be thrilled to see a naked doll on the screen

    5. I do appreciate a warning because my computer is in my upstairs living room where people can see behind me ^^ Though I have no reason of wanting to see dolls naked unless I want to see their jointing system. I'm not offended or anything, I just don't really like to see naked dolls @__@ Not my taste? (not sure how to explain o3o)

    6. Sadly yes. In some places and countries images of David and other classical nudes are indeed censored. In some school text books the images are cropped. In fact in some places viewing any kind of nudity is illegal.

I got my first anatomically correct doll when I was five, it was a female baby doll and I remember my Friends parents not wanting me to play with the doll around their kids because it was "sick". I'm female by the way. So yes some people have bizarre doll related anatomy hang ups which is why Ken is now completely flat in the groin region.

I use a privacy filter when I use my laptop in public places.

    7. America, by European standards, is still considered a conservative country, and I think "doll anatomy hang ups" kind of contributes to that. I'm not saying that conservative = bad, but sex/nudity censorship definitely gives people complexes and makes sex and nudity taboo and/or wrong, which is not the right message -- especially when sex is used so often in commercials to sell products. It gives double messages and really messes with someone's understanding of sexuality.

I mean, yes, there is no point in giving Ken a wang, but the fact that he's been castrated to protect a child's innocence is silly -- especially when much worse things can be seen on TV and in magazine ads. There was an ad run not too long ago for a perfume that said "be sure to rub generously on your neck, so he can smell it as you shake your head no."

I'd rather my five year old have a Ken with a plastic wang than my twelve year old to see an ad like that.

    8. I agree with you, the U.S. is home to many strange contradictions when it comes to things of a sexual nature.

    9. Tell me about it! :?

    10. Remarks like "get over it" just don't cut it in my book. They reveal a lack of sensitivity to ANYONE else's feelings.

Doll nudity doesn't disturb me in the slightest. But you can bet that I am not going to look down my nose at people who might be bothered by it, either because of their situation when viewing or because of their personal feelings.

    11. I'm not sure if you're speaking to me or not, but I certainly haven't told anyone to "get over it", so I'm assuming not, and I think that respect should be given to those who are disturbed by doll nudity, because judgment isn't cool no matter where and who it's given to.

I'm only concerned about what the taboo and horror of nudity is doing to our culture as a whole, all around the world.

But that's another thread, I'm sure.

Anyway, I'm sorry if I was one of those who offended you. :(

    12. Nope, you absolutely weren't the one! I actually was enjoying your remarks and agree with them, to boot! ;)

My earlier post -- answering the question "why warnings" -- said "courtesy" and was followed immediately by what I consider to be a rather insensitive post using that very word...

It's just one of my hot buttons. Courtesy to people who may be different from yourself is NEVER to be sneered at, in my opinon, and is never worth a "get over it". Even if you think the underlying reason for it is a tad warped ;)

    13. I was checking DoA at school, looking at the mini doll market, and I clicked on a post that ended up having a naked doll in it. The kids were joking, because at my school that's just what we do because we all know that we're not easily offended, but they still said something about it. It was especially good that I flashed it on the screen during a presentation :sweat. Whoops. My Bio teacher had some questions.

    14. Hey, at least it was during a Biology class! It could be potentially school-related!

    15. If that happened to me, I'd probably be suspended... and DoA would be blocked... *sigh* Like i said before. i'd rather not have that come up unknowing in any situation, even if it doesn't bother me~

Even though the tagging of a thread is preference, it's still better for everyone because it won't upset someone who is fine with seeing it and will keep those who don't quiet... *isn't sure if that makes sense...* It's overall courtesy like Baakay said. :3

    16. lol random bit from me: my physiology teacher [and former biology teacher] loves my dolls. i sent him a picture of an artist BJD that had it's chest open up with all the organs inside. he thought it was cool 8D and proportions of the doll itself helps out with physio lol [i almost wrote down muscles on my doll's body and use him to cheat on a test. didn't do it, but i did think about it]

but back on topic. i appreciate the doll warnings because i do browse DOA at school sometimes too. i mean, seriously, when i was on Dollmore [i think e.e;] i was showing one of my friends a doll, and her stock pictures were just her in lingerie, and across the room one of the girls looks over asks why i'm looking at porn >3< after clarifying it was a doll made it okay though since i had my doll with me ^^; but yeah, just imagine it being an actual nekkid doll. that would definitely not flow well.

    17. As so many others have said, it's mainly because of both younger users, children around the house or being at work where any sort of nudity could be misunderstood.

Personally it's no problem for me & whenever I'm selling a doll, I always include a full length nude shot as I assume most folks would like to see the condition of the body. Unfortunately, I never remember to post a warning there though if I was posting something in the gallery I would.

    18. The difference is that pretty much everyone in the world will recognize the statue of David at first glance, and there will be no question of what you're looking at. But the majority of people will not recognize your naked doll, as art or even as a doll at all.

It's really not that hard to just throw up a "hey, there's nekkidness here, yo" warning. Show some courtesy for those browsing in public. It has nothing to do with being uptight about nudity - some people just don't need the whole world to know everything they look at on the internet.

    19. The nudity of the dolls doesn't bother me, but it is out of courtesy and I appreciate that. I was looking at a doll magazine at a large bookseller and there were many nude dolls in the article. People walked by and I felt a little like I was flashing them with a girly mag. :0)

    20. Another point to bring up about the school/work related browsing - I have a laptop. When I was in school last year, the school I went to had wifi. Sometimes during lunch break I'd pop onto DoA while sitting in the hall. While most of my friends (fellow geeks/nerds) will understand doll nudity and not care about it, it's nice for there to be warnings in place just incase that one prude Instructor happens to be in the hall at the same time, as they're often quite nosey.

Like most here, I don't give a flip about naked dolls. My dolls hang around my room naked sometimes when I'm busy doing something. It's just that sometimes, when in a public place, I'd like to be spared the trouble of explaining that the breasts and penis on my screen are "just plastic doll bits, no, it's not a sex doll and yes, those are just there for artistic purposes and realism" to everyone that asks, especially in a world this politically correct and easily offended. I'd rather just dodge that whole issue altogether.
