Dollmaster movie

Aug 23, 2004

    1. nakitama I agree with you as well. I can't seem to think of anything else to add to it. XD

    2. I think the differences between Asian and US horror movies are cultural, not intellectual. And I firmly believe that not ALL US horror movies aren't the type of movie that makes you think hard, or that aren't really touching in some way.

When most people go to see a horror movie here, they want to be entertained, not given a psychology lesson (which is one of the reasons why I really disliked 28 Days Later. I thought it was going to be gorey-scary as hell-freak out zombie action, and it turned out to be a romp in the faults of huma nature. Once again, my opinion.)

Anyway...there's always going to be someone who likes the original and hates the remake, or likes the remake and hates the original. I refuse to ever see Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights because they could have just called it Havana Nights instead of slapping the name of one of my all time favorite movies on it...but then again I love the soundtrack. Perhaps we'll all find a happy medium when it comes to the New Doll Master, if and when it ever gets released?

    3. Never did care much for the word 'remake' It carries a bad stigma with it; and since not all *cringe* remakes are bad, it's unjust to simply take the bad and use it to base your opinion on all.

With Ringu, and Ju-on, I preferred the originals. But that's because I live for more intelecual horror than anything else. Their american counterparts were essentially too dumbed down for my likings. Though, what really ruined The Grudge ofr me was the casting. Sarah Michelle Gellar has cemented herself for too well as butt-kicking Buffy. So it's hard to see her in trouble. That and the Sam Raimi's brother (I forget his first name), as the medical supervisor; but that's because my friends and I recognized him as Joxor from Xena, and kept humming or singing his theme song.

But back to being OT. The movie will most likely stay on the shelves for a good number of years. Heck, it too Tim Burton what? 2, 3 years to get Charlie and the Chocolate Factory up and going? So Miramax is in no rush.

    4. You are so right about those films having been "stupidized". It really hurt The Ring IMHO.

And while Ju-On was more of a re-direction of the movie (and he just signed on to direct the US sequel that will make it his SIXTH time re-doing Ju-on CRAZY TALK!) for Western audiences with many of the same shots from the original and very little plot change, it lost a LOT of impact due to those damn musical queue jump scares and the pulled punches in scenes like the bed scene!

I think the original had maybe two or three cheap scares cuz you just can't avoid those in horror, but the remake was FULL of musical queues, its was painful. But that's how it works here, US audiences need to be prompted in order to be frightened.

It's remakes like this that make be get all evil fan-girl pissy. Simple question: why touch something that's perfect? I love Depp, and I used to love Burton but he man is so redundant at this point. I miss the twisted Pee Wee side of Burton and the original whimsy of Edward Scissorhands.

Ok this party is completely %100 about Dollmaster & BJD's...

If I HAD to see this remade, I'd love to see the remake WITH BJD's. If it's just done using old already spooky reputation holding antique style dolls or some other familiar doll, we may as well go rent Stuart Gordon's Dolls or the first three Puppet Masters from Full Moon. The genre could use something new and interesting like BJD's and what's wrong with publicity?

As for the movie making people more likely to think BJD's are icky or scary or anything like that I think it's unlikely unless you just have a severe aversion to dolls in general. I don't think anyone would take a movie that seriously.

Sorry about the doodies but that was just a funny mental picture, hope you can win this "war"...

Ted Raimi will ALWAYS have work thanks to Sam!

    5. I just finished watching Doll Master on dvd that came in the mail for me (english subtitles turned on) and I was SCARED sane!! I was drooling over all the Custom House dolls in the display case in the gallery. Then when the killing started and how the people ended dying had me thinking, one person missing then found dead, it's time to leave. I like the original as is and the special effects were great too, it seemed like it was made in Hollywood. I told my husband about it and he will watch it later. I wonder if it's true that a lot of movies and tv shows here in the U.S. always have some Korean company names in the credits. Anyone know why?

    6. What's truly disturbing is the worry that creeps into the back of my mind that the finished american product will end up discrediting sections about the dolls themselves having souls. There are huge sections in the movie where they do nothing but discuss that matter, and I find that amusing. I've heard about it in detail, but have yet to actually view it myself.

My worries mostly revolve around what others have stated (As well as the fact that I can just see them turning this into something like that 80's movie /Dolls/).

Another vital point I found particularly interesting was that someone pointed out how the 'souls' of the dolls were the actual killers in the scenes. Amusing... I could see Hollywood managing to capture that pretty decently if they attempted, but at the same time, somehow I think they could possibly end up twisting it so that it is actually seen as the dolls doing the killing in doll-form. Less of a budget then to worry about, you realize.

But if they use american actors...
Will the Asian BJD-theme still correspond properly? After all, these were people coming in for a modeling session to have dolls created in their own image.

I can already see atmospheric changes. *wrinkles nose* Things that could be deemed out of place. I'm having good-will-hope on this matter however.

The original seems brilliant to me, though. It really plays on the female population, in particular. Surely, they recall some sweet childhood friend they left up to the attic so many years ago... Waiting, hoping, praying for the day they might be released. And even if it wasn't loud enough to be heard for long, perhaps the day they left that childhood angel behind, a tiny sob emerged....

Just there for a moment, to make the owner pause, and glance back. And then, of course they would be gone. The attic door would be closed forever, and that special friend would eternally be lost to a world of dust, and despair.

...It's brilliant thematic elements like the sadness inspired, hoping to play on those emotions that I like in a movie like this. Things which make you think, wonder...

      What if I had just-

And there's so many more ways to analyze it yet.

Kind of disturbing in a way, isn't it?

To hear just the faint whisper that the movie inspires in the back of your mind, "Don't forget me... because I haven't forgotten you."

    7. This has been an intresting thread so far.

Remakes in my mind are hit and miss. Some end up being insanely good and other bad.

I would like to see CH dolls in the American remake (if it's going to happen) not only because they were used in the original but I think they will scare the general populace more. Though I do admit I also don't want to have them in it because it would take away the mystery of them.

A lot of times I just plain hate American movies. A lot of them seem shallow to me and not very creative. I'm more of the lesser portion of people who likes to have more back story and plot in their movie. I don't go to a movie most of the time to watch some random love, comedy and violence scenes, but because I am intrested in their story. However there are expections to this too.

Also I thaught the new Charie and the Chocolate Factory movie was going to be more base on the book than the original.

I haven't see Ringu or Ju-on or their remakes so I can't say much about them.

I do worry that it might end being like a bad B horror movie. But I won't whine about my concerns too much. If it's bad I will just buy the original and leave it at that, good, I will end up buying both.

    8. It is...with Tim Burton's own original spin on it. The new movie is NOT a remake of the old one. Tim Burton doesn't even like that so why would he want to remake it? So don't go in expecting it to be anything remotely like the original film because it won't be. So yes it's going to be Tim Burton's movie version of the book. I doubt he'll stick to the book completely though, he'll do his own thing like he always does.

    9. Oh no. I am not expecting it to be like the original movie. Actually I'm expecting it to be totally different.I seen the trailer for it and it looks a lot differnt and I will expect it to be different. It will be intresting to see what Tim Burton does with movie.

I never said the new Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was a remake (though I am truly sorry if it did sound like that because I didn't mean to). It's more of a reinterpetation of the book. Forgive me if I spelled that wrong. Most people consider the new one to be a remake because they are so used to the movie and never heard of the book (I didn't until I was 11. And yes that is quite pathetic to not know :opps: ).

I also agree that he won't stick to the book completely. Then again most directors don't always follow the book either due to those dreaded techincal or time issues.

Snozcumber. I couldn't get through writing this post without putting it in somewhere.

    10. JadeIllusion, your thoughts on the melancholy/nostalgic aspect of DollMaster were so saaaad, and true. Makes me want to re-watch the movie, though I'm not sure if I could pull it off again, seeing as I'm a complete scaredy cat.

You also brought up a really good point in that the characters were supposed to have dolls modeled off of them. Hmm. Maybe they'll change it like they did The Grudge, and have everyone but the main character (Hae-Mi) be Asian still. X_X Wait, that doesn't work, since they all have to be descendants of natives of that village... argh! And what are they going to do with the doll in the red kimono, I wonder?

      Sigh. So complicated.

    11. Actually I was agreeing with you. :) The rest of my post wasn't directed at you, but at others in the thread. There were a couple of comments from people here that gave me the impression that they thought it was going to be a remake of the movie (even some annoyance about it). But I'm just trying to make it clear that it isn't.

    12. Oh good!! I'm happy! I love Roald Dahl so much! Brings back nice childhood memories... *feels all warm and fuzzy inside* Thank you for correcting me on this, Zalem!

By the by, This is a really good topic. Everyone's being so cool and I'm learning alot. And.... I have nothing else to say, really!!! Oh, and I hope you teach those birds a lesson, nightshadepromise!

      Oh yeah, one more thing....

....whoooa... a chill ran down my spine when I read this. I get that feeling about some of my toys... and I feel so bad that my attention has turned to other things, especially with my american girl doll because her eyes open and close, and one of them is broken so it always stays open. :o .......excuse me, I must go and hug every one of my stuffed animals now...

    13. Ahh. Sorry. I must have read that wrong.

      -Jyuni

    14. You know, Roald writes for adults too, not just kids. It's neat to read his "other writing" too and contrast it to how you remember his childrens' books.

I recommend either his book of Ghost stories or "Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life"

    15. did you notice the part where the subtitles gives out!

they accidently skipped an entire scene of dialogue, and they put the endeding subtitles. *when the girl is talking about who's fault it is*. durning the mass attack scene.

    16. [joke]girl in the red mini dress. hey there is a part in teh movie for paris hilton after all![/joke]

    17. :( Yeah the subtitles ran out, but that's okay I had to watch it with my husband to try and figure out what was going to happen next. I was still scared silly but my husband liked right away when the first person died, he was like 'Holy Crap!' and I was like 'Oh it gets better'

    18. There was a little blurb in the LA Times about the movies coming out this year and it mentioned Bunraku-like dolls. Not sure if this means they'll actually be Bunraku Puppets--or traditional gofun dolls or dolls that look like Bunraku puppets... But I think it indicates that the dolls will be more like traditional Japanese dolls...?

    19. Hello! I just watched it, and the english subtitles stopped during the last scene! I have NO idea what he or she said just before she attacked the statue with the ax! Please, someone fill me in! I don't think this gives anything else away, from the movie, but if the spoken words do, then please PM me. Really, it's so annoying that the whole movie, except for the last scene, was subtitled! Of course, I had major problems with the dvd - it was scratched badly - the box was broken and it had really done a lot of damage to the disc, especially towards the center, so the end of the movie kept stopping and I had to keep fast-forwarding to get it to move. Grrr... Maybe that screwed up the sub-titling... Anyway, if anyone knows what was said, please take pity on me and tell me. Many thanks!

I really would LOVE a doll like the main character, Park Hae-mi (I hope that's right), in her cargo pants and her cute hair... And can anyone tell me why the St.Mina and Damian dolls come dressed in dark clothes? Wouldn't a Mina doll in a red dress and white blouse be wonderful? I'd love one...

    20. Steph,
I asked a while ago, as I was curious, so I hope someone replies.
