Dollmaster movie

Aug 23, 2004

    1. i haven't seen that but has anybody seen Marronnier? that is one messed up Japanese horror film, but aren't they all in some way?

    2. I want to see this film. :( Is it available with subtitles?

    3. Yes, I want to know too. You got me interested! ^^;

    4. If you're close enough to the Little Tokyo-ish area, there's a store there that sell it.

    5. Ah, okay, thanks. ^^;

    6. wow this is a really interesting topic.

      Well as for me I hope they will use other dolls in the remake just because of the mainstream thing. If every teenager across america and eourope sees BJDs on the big screen they will want to have one..

      I haven't seen the original movie but I understand that it must be really good cause of all the things you've said about it. I hate it that all things japanese or asian in general has become such a popular thing. When I first got in to this there was barely anyone who new about manga. they asked me if I was talking about mango (the fruit) now every single swedish boy and girl wants to draw manga and they sell manga in gorcery-shops!!

      I will just watch the american verions with hope that they will not suck and if they do.. we all know the asian movie was better and if nobody else knows about it.. it's their loss :grin:

    7. My guess is they'll change them to porcelain dolls. More americans are 'creeped', by them. But it would be GREAT if they used BJDs.

      I'm curious if CH had something in their contract that if it got remade, it would need to be CH??

      And anyway, on the subject of the film and emotions-( I haven't seen the Original. I SO want to. Perhaps when DollMaster is released over here as a remake, they'll sell the original too? They did that with Ringu..)

      BJD seem to me, more SOULFUL than a porcelain doll. And the story does seem to brink on the idea of dolls having souls- that's why they're killing in the first place. So, having them be porcelain dolls would kill some of the soul of the story, I think. Then they would just be seen as 'creepy killing dolls.'

      And, watch me get killed for this, perhaps it's a good thing people would be exposed to it? I think having them be BJD is part of the story-It's something new, unfamiliar, which adds to their eerie air...And, I doubt that most teenagers would sit down, watch a movie about dolls KILLING people, and then say, "WOW! I want one of those!!"

      If it doesn't come with a hot guy/gal, a keg of beer, and a bucketload fo money, I doubt most American teenagers would be interested. :roll:

    8. I dont mind if they hollywood it a bit, to be truthful, I think the original needed it. Pretty crappy effect, but the story was good enough to still make it a good movie. I would perfer they used BJD, just to stay faithful to the orig.I'm not afriad that people will be even more freaked out about dolls. I actually like people to make odd comment about my dollfies, shows how much peoples minds are closed, and mouths are wide open, a combination which should be impossible, but still on going.
      And just to let the Battle Royale fans in, I hear theres BIG talk of BR remake, all centered around Quintin Tarrentino (poop I know I spelled his name wrong!!lol). I think he would do an amazing job, only cuz I am a huge fan of his work. From what I heard, he wants to stay more true to the book, and whoever read it knows its better than the movie, and that saying alot since the movie is amazing itself. They are just hesitant because of the nature of the story, since America is such a big wuss. I would push them on 100%, becuz hey, if it does end up sucking, I still have the original to pop into the dvd and enjoy. Only they should be pissed and embarrassed that they didnt do a good job, its thier money wasted, not ours. *jen

    9. In a way, I would be sort of hesitant for them to use CH BJD's rather than porcelain dolls. It would bring a lot of attention to BJD's and would undoubtably spawn lukewarm, fairweather enthusiasts that would "collect" BJD's and then forget about them once publicity for the movie ran out. Not to mention more inaccurate press and articles about how BJDs are based on popular Japanese anime characters, which is basically untrue. It's kind of nice to have our own little niche in the collecting community, and maybe it's just me being self-centered, but I'd be sort of sad to have our whole little world go public and mainstream.

    10. T_T I still have yet to see the original Doll Master, but, I'd bet the original will become ALOT easier to get once the remake comes out, like how Blockbuster started carrying Ringu and Ju-On after their respective remakes came out.

      I can't help but be kind of excited about it...Just for the sake of going to see it in a theatre and bringing my boys with me. e__e Just for some shock value...Kekekeke.

    11. LOL, Obscurity!!! I'd put my kids like, on the backs of the chairs in front of me. xD

    12. Slightly OT:

      But.....Though I listed her in "Market Place Dolls" I have a MIB CH Event Ai "St. Mina" vers. 1 (sad face) going up on Ebay today (Fri. Aug 19) at approx. 6:30 PM PDT
      The mint, brand new doll also comes with the movie "Doll Master" a 2 disk set with Eng. subs. The second disc has interviews with the CH doll makers, and a lot of BJD material.

    13. I agree with those of you who've said that the J-horror movies have been toned down quite a bit. It's sad, but we're a TERRIBLY anti-intellectual country these days. We can't seem to see "intellectually challenging" and "fun" as being the same, ever--and it's hurting us culturally every day. (I think this attitude has a lot to do with why our kids hate school and aren't doing as well as kids in other countries where intellectual work is culturally perceived as pleasurable/rewarding.)

      As for using BJD, I can't imagine that they would. It would take a big chunk of the movie just to explain what they were and how they worked, and in terms of narrative, that doesn't make any sense when there's an easily recognized cultural equivalent that can be put in their places. I'd like to see the movie work through the hands of a competent director WITH BJD, because I think it would be interesting to see what he did with them visually, but I doubt it's going to happen.

    14. Well, I doubt BJDs are very well known in their own countries, either. That that they show up in a horror movie probably is good evidence that it's a sub-culture thing.

      (So, was this topic resurrected because there is confirmation that the remake is actually being done? After all, many movies are shelved, never seeing the light of day.)

    15. Yeah, it's pretty confirmed they're gonna remake it. Now they're finding a director...

    16. This one is for the people that have seen the movie "Doll Master" (or "Inhyeongsa" in Korean)?

      A few weeks ago some friends and I watched this movie, only we couldn't get subtitles for some reason and so watched it all in Korean. Only glitch is we don't understand Korean! XD The movie was still tense and wicked for us anyway even though we could only glean a little of what they were saying, and I loved screaming out what dolls they were on screen or how much such and such a doll went for etc while we were watching the movie. XD BUT I was wondering if people who know the film well or have seen it recently could help us out! *laughs*

      SO! If you haven't seen the film please stop reading because this will be MAJORLY spoilerie.

      Stopped reading now? XD K good, onto the questions:

      When the wheel-chair bound Jae-won tells the police dude and Hemi (who is hand-cuffed up) the whole reason behind everything, WHAT IS SHE SAYING?!? XD We saw the minor parts of exposition but obviously couldn't understand a word Jae-won was saying because we don't speak Korean.

      Why does Mina have a human body?

      And why does whoever killed Demian (I assume it was Mina?) kill him? Is it because he's a good influence and is loved by whatsherface even though she's now an adult so (I assume its Mina) is jealous?

      PS: I was on the bus yesterday and a girl who WAS Mina got on. I KID YOU NOT She was terrifying in a completely adorable way.

    17. Er, well, it's been a while but I'll try to see if I get this right...

      SPOILERS...!

      The wheelchair lady was possessed by the spirit of the big doll in the beginning of the movie (the one made by the artist who was accused/lynched for murdering his lover) to gather up the descendants of those who killed (lynched) said artist so she could exact her revenge (she was in love with the artist who created her). So basically, she's going on about how easy it was to lure them out to the museum and slowly kill them off (using Mina - human form - to do so) and explain to them why she was doing it (revenge).

      Mina has a human body because she's really the spirit of the doll Mina (I guess you could say she's more like a ghost than anything). The other spirit possessing the artist lady seems to have powers (not really sure why) and I guess created/freed the spirit of Mina to do her bidding.

      I don't recall if Mina killed 'Demian' or not, but my guess is she did. I think it was because he was trying to protect his 'owner'. I was never quite sure about that but that was my guess. Especially after he was 'dead' and the girl was walking toward the window, his head flew across the room to try to stop her. Still trying to protect her even in death.. sweet, isn't it?

      From what I gather, a doll loves it's owner and never stops loving them, even when, as the owner grows up (it makes the assumption that dolls are for kids and adults generally don't have dolls, or at least that's how I understood it) and falls out of love with the doll. Mina was abandoned by Hae-mi when she was a child but never forgot her or stopped loving her. Hae-mi grew up, lost interest and forgot about Mina. That's why she didn't recognise her until later (actually didn't recognise her at all, Mina had to tell her who she was) and was freaked out that Mina still loved her and wanted to be with her. The artist lady promised Mina that Hae-mi would not be harmed and Mian could be with her was my understanding...

      Anyway, that's what I recall of the movie. If anyone else has better recollection or knowledge of it please correct me. My subs cut out near the end so I was stuck with Korean only and couldn't understand the end of it too. I asked in another thread here and someone gave me the gist of what went on at the very end between Hae-mi and the artist lady's husband. (sorry, I can't remember the names very well...)

      Loki's Mom

    18. My bf downloaded it for me awhile back with the subtitles. I got to watch the whole thing with subtitles, and I can say for sure that Loki's Mom has everything down right. n_n

      I would also like to add that the woman in the wheelchair was the wife of the grungy old man locked up in the dungeon. She got possessed by the spirit of the big doll in the beginning when her husband and her found the big doll in a forest. n_n

      The descendents of those who killed the man in the very beginning were lured to the mansion by the idea of modeling for a new BJD sculpt.

      The way to kill a spirit of a doll is to gouge out their eyes and smash their head? It's been so long since I've seen the movie. XD Though it might work better if you guys use VLC to play the subtitles. n_n;

    19. I do have VLC, thats what we ran it in! *laughs*

      THANKYOU BOTH for this! This fills in SO many holes that we were TOTALLY confused about, and some of the stuff that I didn't even think to ask about but of course we couldn't have known.

      So all the people that were invited there to be models for the new sculpt, were invited because of their connection to the people that killed the original sculptor? What was the premise of the selection criteria that was given to them?
