Dollmaster movie

I keep seeing comments on how much the us is remaking horror movies of asian movies. If you go look at the trend, it's mostly the original creators that are stepping forward to remake the movies. Prime example, "The Grudge" was created by the original creator of Ju-On

I might also add, that if 'they' released the originals in the US, it is highly unlikely that many people would go see it, as few Americans enjoy "subtitled" movies. Of course there will always be a following. However, it isn't nearly going to be enough to cover the expense. Hence why movies get remade into "americanized" movies.

The grudge was good. I don't care what anyone says about it. It was scary as hell. I own Ju-on, AND The Grudge. The ring was extremely successful here as well. Again, another movie i loved. I own Ringu AND the Ring.

 

I just watched it last week. I agree that it was a much better movie than I expected.

But for some reason I didn't get subtitles near the end so I don't know what they were saying outside in the last part.

=O No! They're remaking it?! *Immediately assumes the worst* I'm terrified of what they'll do to it.... Seeing as american horror = nudity, sex and blood.... I'd be tempted to see it.... But I'd probably be thrown out for cursing like a mad man.

 

For example I found the Japanese parts of Babel fascinating, the only thing I found dissapointing was that it was SO sexual.(originally posted by inuchick)

that's the sad thing about the culture is that it is beautiful but there ARE a lot of sexual aspects to the everyday culture. love hotels, maid cafes even anime cons have some sexual aspects to them. it's not that the japanese culture is over run with it but i think the film makers did want to show a different side to the culture. everyone always assumes japanese are prim, proper and oh so accommodating. but sometimes they're not, it's the same with every place.

i actually just saw doll master tonight. it was really cool, i nearly had a spazz when i saw all those bjds in one place! i think the end of the movie was really sad with the whole mina part. however...the deaths...made me laugh. i didn't mean to! the parts leading up to them were suspenseful and scary and i covered my eyes a bunch of times simply from anticipation! but then the deaths themselves...^^; i loved the movie though! ha ha, i watched it with all 4 of my action figures XD

it's horrible that they're remaking it. i refuse to view the remake on the grounds that it will cause both physical and emotional pain.

 

Could someone PM me a plot summary? It's unlikely I'll ever see the movie but I'd love to know what the story is about.

 

I just bought it from ebay because I couldnt find it anywhere in my locals video stores D:. They have a lot of stuff though, I was able to rent Battle Royale, Tale of two sisters, Suicide Circle, Ringu, Ju-On and a lot of other asian movies. But I still couldnt find The Dollmaster ;__;. How dissapointing.

I really hope, if they remake the movie, that theyll take BJDs. Id be freakin dissapointed if theyd take some ugly american dolls like bratz (which, i am almost sure, are a rip-off of blythes)

And yes, BJDs seems creepy to most people. Last time i went to the video store with my Lola, the girl freaked out when she saw it, she even screamed (yea, really.). Most of my friends think she looks creepy also. But my family thinks she looks like me when I was little (okay, im off topic xD)

 

I just watched it... it was sad for me... :/ specailly cause I saw on Daimian's face afterwards (I'm trying not to spoil anything here so wording may be funky XD) was just of... sadness... though I probably imagioned it but still :/ then at the end... with Mina... aw... D: the only thing that really freaked me out were the big 'dolls' all around the place... DDDD: DO NOT WANT.

 

I want to see the original so badly. I may try to find it at Blockbuster, but it's not likely

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I must say that I was surprised at the resemblance between the actress and the CH St. Mina in that picture. She has the St. Mina nose 0.0.

 

I just got this movie (ordered it from a wholesaler in Staten Island!) and wow. It wasn't as scary as I expected... just SO much more sad.

I loved it, but my best friend and I found ourselves assuring our dolls we'd never abandon them!

 

Well that's my sentiment exactly. I adore this film. This vexes me greatly. Another awful, dumbed-down remake of a superb asian film. Why? Because american film companies assume (wrongly) that american audiences will have no interest in main characters that are not american and stories that do not originate from their own culture. Which is nonsense, as I can see from this board, there are a great many americans that are loathe for this to happen. The film already has sub-titles. Would it be completely unthinkable to release it (and others of its like) properly into mainstream western cinemas? Oh joyous day! Callou callay! Methinks this will never happen

 

How oh how will they mess this up (US remake), and do I even want to know? Of course curiosity will lead me to see what type of dolls they decide to use.

It's sad to say, but I really don't think the original subtitled version would make much money in american theatres....there are very few movies that have been released subtitled that were very sucessful in movie theatres in America. On the other hand, there is a large audience for typical american-style horror/thriller movies, even if they are poorly made. Americans in general just aren't used to going to see a subtitled movie on a typical big screen. It doesn't mean they are stupid, it's just not what they are accustomed to. It would be nice though for that to slowly change With the growing number of Americans taking interest in foreign films it could happen with time.

 

I didn't notice it when I watched the movie, but you are totally right!

 

actually, it has little to do with the idea of a non-american main character, and more to do with the fact that badly dubbed films, and sub-titled films have a history of doing badly in the US, and most other english speaking countries. People find it difficult to pay attention to what is going on in the film and to read the words at the bottom of the screen. People on this board are pretty used to it, due to watching anime, and asian films. HOwever, this is not the general consensus of the rest of the country. GREAT asian movies have done badly because of subtitles. Even non-asian subtitled movies that were great did badly. (Prime example "Pan's Labyrinth")

Also keep in mind, that half the time, these "Somebodies" that you are saying are making the films are the original film creators themselves. Prime example being "The Gudge" and "The ring". Both were brought to the US as remakes by the decision of the original creators. NOT people here who decided it would be cool to make them, and in some cases, it's the same creators creating them here. The grudge had the same creator here as it did in Asia. (and contrary to what others think, i LOVED the Grudge, both american and Asian.)

It's the asian creators that are trying to bring their movies to the US market, and they KNOW that if they do, they need to be in a format that the american public will embrace. (Which would reiterate my comment about people generally not liking subtitled films.)

I too wish that it would just be a release of the original films here, however, i doubt that will ever happen. No one is going to shell out the dollars to market a movie, and advertise for it, knowing it is going to do badly because of subtitles. They'd rather remake it in english. So if you hate that people are remaking these movies, then i'd write to the original creators. THEY are the ones releasing the rights, or bringing them over themselves. I'd take my complaint to them if i were you, because it's the only way you will make your point. (of course, u might need a translator for that LOL)
