i think we should! Dont these people realise that some things just shouldnt be messed with??!! Battle angel alita is one of the first Mangas i ever read and one of the first Anime i ever saw... Its shocking to think some puffed up movie gimp is out there thinking he can do better.
Now i admit... sometimes they dont do a bad job.. but most of the time... GAH!

I think you guys are getting a little too critical and with the remake not even out yet. We hardly even know any of the details about it. ^^;; Maybe someone at Miramx found CH's BJDs very beautiful or the story very interest and wanted to introduce this movie to America. I highly doubt that if they brought the original Doll Master over that it would stand a chance in the theaters. @_@; Most Americans wanna see something explode and don't like this whole reading subtitles thing. So I find it understandable that the movies are remade to be more appealing over here. It's not like they stole the story and are taking all the credit. So please just give it a chance.

 

Don't forget - Miramax is also the studio that produced the Lord of the Rings movies - which, all in all, are some of the best movies ever made.

While not completely true to the book, they were fairly true to the *spirt* of the book, which is more than a lot of movies can say.

Miramax is also making the His Dark Materials trilogy - and while I'm hearing some odd things about censorship with those, I still have hope.

James Cameron ("Titanic") is a little hit and miss,but is probably one of the few Hollywood directors who could do "Alita" justice. Let's hope he's given the support to!

 

Im not saying im compleatly against them doing thigs like this.. ill save my final jugement until i see the finished artical. But im still a purest at heart. I cant help but feel that these things are better left alone. Liek i said before, if they were ment to be seen in english, they would have been made in english.

But i hope to god they do a good job... otherwise tehre will be alot of disgruntled BJD and Anime fans out there.

So true, I was rather weirded out by BJDs when I got a good look at them. But a minute later that was replaced with the overwhelming urge to BUY THEM ALL KYAHAHAHA!

Yeah, that's a bootleg. Official DVDs are almost always region coded, and that sounds rather cheap for Korean DVDs. Also, Chinese subtitles in non-Chinese movies are a big warning sign!

 

The problem is, if you never try, you never know. Since the unexpected success of Ringu, some japanese terror films are hitting the theaters here (last was Ju-on : The Grudge 2 ) and people really goes to see these films. Really. People who is not into the whole asian terror stuff.
(Yeah, ok, we have a long tradition dubbing films, and that's a big help :wink: but still).

... I'm a little iffy on the HDM, tho. (Loved the books, but I've heard something about God not being in the films which, you know, takes away the whole point of the books.)

 

God, I hope this doesn't push BJD into the mainstream. I remember a post awhile back about BJDs owned by celebrities and every brainless teenie-booper having one in those low cut Abercrombie and whatever jeans.
Oh god I HATE that they think they have to remake everything. Sub or dub and then leave it alone, you heartless weenies.

By Ringu you mean it's American counter part right? I mean I saw Ringu but it didn't seem to get as much hype as The Ring at all. I think the biggest movie with subtitles was Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon but it wasn't as big as say...an Adam Sandler movie. x_@ But a lot of subtitle movies just end up in small theaters on the artsy side of town. I think with subtitle movies and the American public it's either a hit or miss.

Wait wait...cross that, Hero was a huge success. :3 But that was a rare event.

 

I mean the japanese Ringu ops: It was an unexpected success in Sitges' fantastic cinema festival, and released in some theaters. After that, there was the american remake, and suddenly japanese terror films started to pop out in cinemas. Weird, but I'm not complaining
I prefer the japanese terror because it'smore focused on building real "suspense" and an atmosphere than making me jump from my seat one time, let me rest two minutes andthen jump again.Then repeat. That's boring after a while.

Hmm... it's going to be right that european and US tastes for movies are SO different? xD

And,as I said before, we got no subtitled movies here. ALL comercial films come subbed. That's why we can see all that US cinema, with the general low english skills xD

I'd heard about this, but, I'm not sure what sort of dolls they're going to use. Honestly, I don't care. Mirimax, recently, has been under pressure to make movies that are LESS scary, LESS sexualy, and relatively safe for parents to take their kids to see.

Remakes in general bother me. For a while the fad was remaking European movies, but with those movies becoming more and more available to an American audience, Hollywood is moving to Japan. I think it's degrading to those in Hollywood who actually make good original work. These remakes are very, very rarely about art and getting someone's vision to a broader audience, but money.

Mirimax will probably use their own type of dolls so that they can sell them.

I mean, I'd really hate for most people's first exposure to these dolls to be a scary one. Think of the teasing! I mean, we already get "Chuckie" calls...

maybe they'll be compltely unaware of the BJD craze! As I said, it's all rights, so they can ruin it in every way possible
Don't email them about it! Let them think it's nothing important and just some crazay Korean thingie!

Here (where I live) Ringu was in um..no theater. XD Like I had to rent it but even then I had to go searching for a while to find it. I gotta agree with ya on that, The Ring did start some sort of chain reaction. ._. I like Japanese/foreign horror movies too. [Devil's Backbone and The Eye are my favs I'm drawing a blank on Japanese right now for some reason...errrrm.] For me I like how they rely more on a good story then just randomly scaring ya. But I think you explained how appealing the movies are better then me.

I definatly think US and European tastes in movies are very different. :O We should compare movie listings. XD

Ooooh boy, I really am not sure where I stand on this one... Personally, I think I'm gonna hold my tounge until I see it. Maybe I'm totally off, but I think it's gonna be liked by people who are not into the traditional slasher type scary movies, but disliked by people who are creeped out by dolls or don't really want to think that hard about the plot or unspoken meaning of the film when they go to a scary movie. Or maybe AmnesticAngel is right and it will totally bomb. ops: But I haven't seen the original yet. I wanna see it SO BAD :cry:

I don't think they'll use CH dolls in it (even though I want them to ). The point of making the remake of it is to put the american spin on it and have it be popular in american theaters where most people aren't familiar with asian cultures and definately wouldn't understand or be open to a film that was 'out there' even in Korea (correct me if I'm wrong? ). Whatever kind of dolls they use, people will probably call them 'Chucky dolls' anyway. Putting CH dolls into it would kind of alienate the average american and defeat the purpose of the remake... But maybe Mina or Demian will make a guest appearance?

*This is OT, but does anyone know where I can get a non-bootleg copy? There's the coding problem, but is it possible to play DVDs that aren't coded for american players on a PS2 or Xbox or something like that?

 

Yeah I can see it now if they do this remake and don't actually use Custom House dolls in it then some hardcore movie goers like myself will think 'Oh another Chucky type movie'. I did see The Grudge with Sarah Michele Gellar and it scared the daylights out of me! My poor husband had claw marks on his arm to prove it . He later got the original movie on dvd last year from best buy and we watched it to see if there was a difference. The original was wayscarier and while it did not have the Hollywood special effects, it still had me scared to death. I only hope Miramax will do their homework and look at the original before they actually start filming.

Wow, why such anger against a remake you all know nothing about yet??

Honestly, I wouldn't want them to use BJDs for a HORROR movie. I like when people comment on the beauty of my dolls and I don't want to have someone run away screaming because I'm holding something that looks like a creepy killer dolls from the movie.

 

Yeah, maybe, but they already did use BJDs for a horror movie. And it's that movie that's being remade. So it'd be a little sad if they switched doll type to be more "Americian." ops:

But of course at this point we all know nothing about what the remake will be like, and it's usless to hate on it. I agree on that. Still, it's fun to speculate.

 

Er, yeah. A Korean movie. Koreans have been more familiar with BJDs from the get go, it's nothing like releasing an American version with dolls that are unfamiliar to American audiences.

If they switch doll types, they'll do it because they want to use what the target audiences find most frightening, anyway. What's the point of using, say, BJDs if the audiences are going to look at them and laugh?
