Dolls and Conventions

Apr 3, 2005

    1. I'm one of the people who just carry my doll around in the crook of my arm. I did it for all three days of Detour with only setting them down on my knee when I sat down. For the doll panel I brought 4 in a duffel, which I don't recommend if you have shoulders that hurt easily.

    2. When I take Roo out by himself, I can stuff him in my purse XD It's discreet, and I can whip him out for photos and put him right back again with no hassle. At Anime Expo, I carried him most of the time, because he doesn't weigh too much... though he still gave me an arm cramp :'D

I had Boe at AX as well, and he rode around in a backpack with his head sticking out. This is also how I've carried SD-sized dolls through airports :'D

    3. well the problem with carrying down on ur arms for long = arm locks [or like someone said unmovable arms the next day]

but try to alternate the carrying arms it works... and well u dun have to carry them all the time [u can probbly sit around and let them sit down :D :D]

    4. I had an artist alley table (and we sold wigs and jewelry too) so we had my boys on display (and many people came up to see them and take pics XD)

Other than that I just carried one in the crook of my arm, though if you plan on doing that long remember to switch arms or one will get very tired (and possibly sore if you're not used to a lot of arm work)

    5. I carried my MSD at a con in the palm of my hand and I had a friend who was willing to carry him once my arms got tired. I did have a bag, though, but I never stuffed him in it.

    6. I've brought mine to AX. I usually end up not taking them out much, because I'm busy holding bags, or taking pictures, or watching a concert to watch over them. Occasionally, if we were just going to be waiting in line, I'd bring my doll, but I never really ended up doing anything with them. Mostly, the doll just stayed in their duffel bag in my hotel room.

    7. Haha! I figured it out. I went and bought a stroler last night from Wal*Mart for $10. Now I can take ann 4 of my girls with me at all times!

    8. I carried one of my boys out for two days during AX. Both of them just rested in the crook of my arm, though Arioc was shoved at my friends a lot during the cosplay meet. ^^; Next year I hope to have a costume for my boys too, so they can be in the cosplay shoots with me, instead of getting passed around and set down and near stepped on. >.<; Rhode Camelot will have cute little exorcist dolls! 8D

    9. I just carried mine like a baby in my arms, although I've seen people push them around in strollers and carry them in baskets :3nodding:

    10. At a-kon, I carried Shuichi in a doll sling, a small version of a child sling.

Having three pounds of doll hanging off one arthritic shoulder made that shoulder be out of commission for over two weeks after the con.

At animefest, I used a real baby harness:

He did NOT ride as pictured, looking like a frog. I had the photo taken to show how not to carry one's doll. He sat in the harness with both legs hanging out of one of the leg holes.

    11. I carried Haz with me for all four days at AX in my left arm (+_+)''' it became quite numb by the fourth day :sweat. But it was so he can meet people and see things (^w^).

When it became too crowded, I'd hold him in front of me to weave through the hoards of people.

    12. At Fanime con, I carried Ciel in his bag, since he's huge! I don't think I'll take him to another con, he's too hard to manage when I'm outside the hotel room.

    13. I took Akiko to Anime Expo, and both to Anime Vegas. The latter hardly counts because, since I was staff, the girls mostly sat there in a chair and watched people sign up for the Masquerade :P.

I did find it difficult at times to carry Akiko around AX, though. Half the time I was in a costume that required holding the skirt up as I walked, so I definitely couldn't carry her while in that thing! I ended up only taking her out for the doll panel and when I cosplayed Princess Uranus (she was Princess Saturn).

If I carried my purse with me at cons, I'd probably take Akiko more places. She sits nicely in my bag, with only a little bit of head sticking out XD. This makes it nice to take her places where I'm not cosplaying.

    14. I brought all three of my small kids(MSD) to Katsucon last year. The girls stayed in the hotel room and chilled out while Adelais went with me 'on the floor.' (Odette's wig was being agrivating, and Laksha often freaks people out. Adelais is often my "travel buddy" cause he's much more 'tame' and 'normal' looking...you know, if his big pointy ears didn't stick out of his hair. XD)

I carried him tucked in my arm most of the time, sitting up, facing slightly inward, so if a crowd of people swicked by, they'd brush the back of his head and not his face. (AACK @_@) It worked out really well- MSD are light, but when I got tired, I had an inconspicuous-looking messenger bag, which I tucked him into wrapped into a little blanket.

It was awesome! I actually had some DOA members run over and be like, "OMG, is this Adelais!? :O" And I got some really interesting conversations about him. :3 It was a blast, and I can't wait to take him again next year!

    15. Muahaha, I've only went to two small minicons... ever, but the first year an article was featured in the local newspaper. There was a picture too. At first I was angry because the picture was of some goth girl with the Marlyin Manson black tear thing going on. And it said "So and So dresses as her favorite anime character, to particate in the cosplay contest." Well she wasn't cosplaying, nor was she anything anime-like or in the contest. ~_~ on closer examination I noticed that me and three of my friends were in the background of the article! The thing that stood out the most out of the whole background picture was my MSD Nasia, Ayu! I showed it to a friend and said "It may be hard to see, but.." And she said "DOLLIE ELBOW!" When I questioned her she said she'd always recognize the 'dolly elbow' because it's THE way to carry dolls at cons!

    16. Back when Gatsby was just a head, I never had much trouble carrying my dolls at conventions. But now that I have three full 60cm dolls, it's much harder! I think for next year's AnimeFest I'll have invested in some doll carriers because this year, my boyfriend had Gatsby strapped to his chest and Marie carried in his arm, and I carried Esmé in her puffy DollHeart dress while I was cosplaying! It was hectic, though I think my boyfriend's and my arms were pretty beefed up for a while after the con. He was a good sport about it (after a while), but I still think a new method will be used next year, unless I also have a few MSD-sized dolls by then that I can take instead.

    17. When I take my 3 to doll meets (which we have regularly in Toronto, about once a month). I carry two in a cloth picknic bag and one in my arms. It usually is quite a work out. I usually will only take one if I don't want to do a Marathon. Hey, but I am loosing a lot of upper body weight, so I am happy.

Some carry them packed in cushions in a suitcase with extending handle and wheels, backbacks, large purses (I have even seen a Hound scrunched that way with no damage). As long as you use the pillows or white soft towels they are fine.

I realy like the baby hamock idea, going to have to use that!

    18. This has just been bugging me since this weekend. We went to Colorado for Nan Desu Kan, and of course I brought all the boys. I set them up at the Artist's table we had, and I swear like 50 people came by asking if I made them, if they were for sale, asked where to get them, and then balked at the average price I quoted on websites (as there's no way in heck I'm selling any of my boys). Some even told me they were scary. :sigh I did meet some other BJD owners, but very few in comparison. So, my question, has anyone else ever been to a con with their bjd that people reacted this way? I've gone to alot of cons, and this was the first time so many people just seemed strange/rude/snotty about seeing another persons dolls (and I know that alot of it was that they probably had never seen one before. . .)

    19. yeah. I mean, really, I am guessin' you were at an anime convention. Well, except for that article run in... Raijin or something how much exposure through anime to ABJDs get? People probably thought you were a talented anime-doll maker. Anime cons, while diversifying and becoming more and more of mini-Japan-Expo's, are still anime and many people in the separate fandoms never meet.

    20. I took Eponine to SiliCon. There were a few of us who brought their resin kids. For the most part, we got a very good reception to them. Several sci fi attendees asked us where we got the dolls. Also two little girls came up to us and told us how pretty they were.

My favorite quote by one of the girls:

"Does she (Eponine) have a boyfriend?"

      And then I said,

"No, she's twelve. She thinks resin boys have resin cooties."

It was a really fun get together. I also took Eponine to World Con. It was a blah kind of con for me though.

Then again, I only take my dolls to gatherings at smaller cons. I don't think I could show up at an AX meet up since last year's was very overwhelming. I always stick with my friends.
