dolls and gender [Just a weird thought!]

May 13, 2012

    1. I only have boy dolls, but whether that's because of my gender or not seems a little weird to me. I may be a female biologically, but I rarely feel as such and am a lesbian. If anything, my attraction to male dolls could be contributed to self-expression via penis envy, thus being related to gender dysphoria, but since most biologically females probably don't have male dolls for the same reason, I really wonder about the validity of the original hypothesis.

    2. I'm a girl, and I collect mostly boys. Girls just aren't as interesting to me, and boys have more outfit styles that appeal to me. (A lot of people seem to say it's the outifts that make them go to girl dolls.) I guess it just depends on where you want to take your collection. :)

    3. I find I tend to think in "families" rather than being drawn to any particular sex of doll.
For example when I find a sculpt I like I try to find a partner for it, and if the sculpt is young, I try to find it parents...I suppose I don't like the idea of my dolls being alone if anything happens to me >.>; **is crazy**

    4. As a kid, I had a lot of AG style girl dolls, but I was so frustrated with the lack of boy dolls that most often I would convert one of my dolls to a boy for a while, mostly beacuse I wanted to play a romantic relationship between characters. But even since then, I always found myself drawn more towards playing with Ken dolls, just because it was more fun.
So far, my plans for a doll family have never really involved girls. I dunno, I just feel like getting a girl doll is redundant since I'm already a girl. I would probably get jealous of her wardrobe or something equally rediculous. I have to admit that all the guy sculpts that I'm interested in fit my bill for "attractive." But I could also see myself buying female Zaolls just because they're so beautiful.
I guess my theory is that many people collect dolls in single genders or both genders based on their inspiration to convey artistic beauty and create a unique personality through a particular doll. Different gendered dolls fit with different people. Your thoughts?

    5. I have all male dolls. (Currently and incoming) That isn't to say I'd never get a female but I have yet to find one I've fallen head over heels for.

Granted, I love a fair amount of girl clothes but I wish more of it would fit boys. I don't think I'd get as much joy out of owning a girl doll in girl clothes...

    6. When I was looking for my first doll, I only looked at females. I primarily draw females. I am a female.

But no, I bought a second-hand SD boy. And I love him to bits! I thought his anatomically correct body would weird me out, but it doesn't at all.

Now, I hold my friend's girl's and fell like I'll break them. An SD girl for my boy is in the works, but I don't have her yet and I'm not sure how I'll feel about interacting with her.

I have four friends with dolls, and out of the five, only two of us bought males first . And we're all high school girls. Sadly, I don't know any male BJD owners yet to compare with.

I think it just depends on the person.

    7. Well, I am a girl and I do collect boy dolls but I had a female once and I really want to get another female doll. I collect my boys for the simple fact that I like shonen-ai and my characters often develope that way so I tend to have more male than female. But I do miss being able to make form fitting dresses and such so I'll probably get a female soon.

    8. For the longest time I only had boy dolls. Now I'm fairly even in number but I still tend to lean toward male sculpts. However I have a friend (girl) who only has girl dolls. She recently bought her first boy and had to sell him shortly after she got him because she just couldn't handle having a boy. I supposed it's based on the individual.

That being said I have noticed that girls tend to own boys and boys (the few I've met) tend to own girls.....kinda weird in a fascinating way when you think about it. Seems like something I'd discuss in psychology.

    9. I'm a female, and I collect mostly male dolls.i prefer male clothes. I just want to wear them but I can't.so I make my dolls wear them instead.

    10. I'm a woman, and the majority of my collection is female dolls. I would own equal numbers of male and female dolls, except not as many male sculpts appeal to me. I don't find I can do anything more exciting or experimental with male dolls versus female dolls. Perhaps its because I use my dolls as representations of my fictional characters, rather than approaching them as fashion dolls?

    11. I prefer female dolls to male dolls. Im still trying to psychoanalyze myself to find out just why. I just have to to more soul searching I guess. I really want an Iplehouse EID Roger though, simply because of his more masculine face. Most of the male dolls i see are rather effeminate, but Roger has that strong, heathen king type face. I secretly wish i could get him with a buster brown haircut and dress him up like Anton Chigurgh from No Country for Old Men. Then all I need is a 1/3 scale cow 'euthanazation' tool. lol

    12. I'm a girl and have 4 dollies and they're all girls. Currently waiting on a 5th one.. also a girl lol. I do want a boy though but just one. I like girls better :)

    13. So far I do fall into that theory lol. All I'm wanting so far are boy dolls. None of the girls have caught my eye except for one.

    14. i'm a girl and i have a mix, i just got rid of a boy doll tho, so its uneven atm. i have 3 boys and 4 girls (my signature contains the boy that went to my boyfriend and the girl i bought for a friend, she's just waiting on a wig to go home). i'd LIKE to have it pretty even, i'm saving for parts for one boy to finish him, and a whole boy (little one tho :3 he's gonna be so cute). i dont prefer boys or girls, they all get pretty spoiled.

    15. I'm a guy and I want only male dolls. The females are lovely in so many ways but I just don't want any for my own. I have one male doll and another on order and, while I am gay , I don't see that attraction to one gender or another determines whether you like males or females. You simply like what you like.

    16. I am a woman planning on getting female dolls. I think I prefer female dolls because they represent aspects of myself (although the funny thing about reading this thread is realizing how many women collect female dolls to express their more male aspects). I am predominantly heterosexual, but the dolls I want are lesbians. Go figure.

    17. I prefer females than males :/ I did see some males dolls that attracts me like migidoll but I can't exactly see myself buying them.

    18. I am a girl and as of now I only have one doll and she's a female, but if I get any more dolls most will probably be boys. I'm not sure why, I think I usually just like male dolls more.

    19. im a girl and i definitely collect only female dolls, they can wear more things and i thing they are more beautiful and more changable, and i am hetero, yeah i know its not the question but it also affect of what you collect if you think about it

    20. I'm female and solely collect female dolls. Everyone dubs me a 'girly girl' and I admit I'm super girly which may be why I like a more feminine doll. Boy dolls can be beautiful too but I'm all about female fashion, and adorning my dolls in it, and I also love the idea of strong female protagonists for my SDs. :)
