dolls and gender [Just a weird thought!]

May 13, 2012

    1. When deciding my first doll i chose female than i was actually looking at a lot of male dolls because i thought they where so cute ^__^! I love the male dolls AND the female but i got a female doll first and my second doll will most likely be male. Reason i kinda didnt get the male doll because of the lack of clothing it had x.x i just felt i couldnt get what i was wanting out of the doll if i got a male but maybe later once i get some sewing skills up ill get my male dolly and make clothes for him ^__^!

    2. interesting thought, i dont think i would own a male doll, i have seen some and thought 'yeah that's really cool' especially some of themed fantasy ones, but female dolls have nicer clothes and i just find them more appealing, and for photos i think they also give me more options, a big selection of weird and wonderful clothing

    3. I'm a girl and I have a mix of both. I started out just wanting boys -- I liked the whole pretty boy aesthetic that many doll companies have going on, and was also worried that I wouldn't bond as well with a girl. I actually found the girl dolls a bit intimidating. That changed after coming into contact with a wider array of dolls at meetups. After awhile I found myself being drawn more to girls. I tend to end up with more boy dolls when I buy bodies for specific characters, but if I'm looking to add a doll just because it's pretty, then it almost always ends up being female.

    4. While I have a girl doll and I love her, I must say, I generally prefer male dolls. I have no idea why, but they are just so much prettier on average than the girls. :sweat

    5. My gender is female, and right now, I have two pukipukis who are both girls. I'm saving up for another BJD who I'm thinking will most likely be a girl. But after that one is at home, my next one will be a boy doll. Mostly I like to have my dolls coupled up...I have many off-topic dolls, and I have an even amount of boy dolls & girl dolls.

    6. Nope. I am female and I have a lot more girls than boys. (About a 4:1 ratio currently, I believe...)

Part of it may be that I am better at making dresses and skirts than "dude clothes" (pants, shirts with sleeves, etc.) :|I guess girls are more fun to dress, in general. I do love my boys, but my girls definitely get a lot more attention to their clothes and hairstyles...

    7. I am female, and I have only two dolls so far. But I was attracted from the very beginning to the guys. And so to speak, the very manly guys.

And I love my boy just for himself. I mean, I love to give or make him nice and interesting clothes, but I like him naked or with little clothing as often as possible. He is so yummy! And I am not overly bothered that he is heavy and not super-posable. He is simply...so beautiful. I love him.

Now for my girl...very honestly, now you got me thinking. I mainly thought my boy should have a girlfriend. I though as a BJD-owner, it would just be nice to have both genders, and as a nice matching couple. I like making historical costumes.

But opposite to my boy, I much prefer her to be covered. As I would be ashamed? As I would be really sad imaging to be without my boy, I am much more willing to sell her e.g. if money is needed. I am really not sure about her, but I only had her for about three months, thus I will still give her some time. Right now I sueded my dolls. While I could not put Julian together again fast enough, Auryanna is still in pieces...kinda sad, I guess.

Maybe it's also only the fact that I am making a Rococo dress for her and I am a bit bored that I have to make the decorative roses all by hand...

Well, let's do not get too deep into the realms of human psyche. In fact, this is an interesting topic...

    8. I don't identify within the gender binary and I have mostly girls. It's not that I don't like boy dolls, but they just sit around and I don't do much with them. ;)

    9. Hummm good queation, I have many dolls in all sorts of materials.
All of my previous dolls were all girls and I am a man, but since getting in to ABJD I only have Boys.
I figure I'v done the girly thing, I was a bridal designer for a long time so sewing to comes naturally.
Frills, tucks & insertion lace was a spicallity, esipcally on antique dolls.
But now it just seems like a natural progression.
Alough I do look at some of the BJD Girls I don't think O M G I have to have her, where as the iplehouse men.... thats a whole other story!

    10. Thanks for all the interesting comments everyone (:

    11. I love both boy and girl dolls, my guys get to be "cool" and my girls get to be "frilly." To me, having each is having the best of both worlds.

    12. I agree with DanceCat!
I am a girl and I have mostly boy dolls...maybe for the novelty of it since boy dolls were always harder to find than girl dolls. But I must say I like looking at pretty boys! Though I love my girl dolls too, love dressing them up. I guess I just love them all!

    13. Hmm, interesting, I'm a woman and all of my dolls are female, I have tried to have a male doll in the past but I just found the 'boys' clothes really boring and couldn't come up with much of a character for him:(. I love dressing my girls in nice things and maybe things it wouldn't be at all practical for me to personally wear. I'm married to a human man though so the 'has dolls which reflect the human gender the person is attracted to' doesn't always work! I do find some human ladies attractive but I guess not enough to want to marry them:)

    14. I'm a female with one female bjd, and about 6 Off Topic female dolls, and 1 male OT doll. I like the dolls mainly for sewing and most enjoy sewing for the girls. I wouldn't mind adding at least one male bjd to my collection, though.

    15. I don't think that it's really gender-dependent on whether you have boy or girl dolls–I think much of it is based on a person's personality.

Some people like having boys, because they naturally gravitate towards more masculine characters (or effete types), while others like having girls, because they might be inclined towards more feminine characters.

For me, I'm really a girl's girl, and I think that I would just be very awkward around a male doll–I wouldn't have any idea what to do with it! Personally, I prefer the variety of things that a girl doll can wear as opposed to a boy doll... Like a lot of people have already said, I find boy clothes a bit boring too. As CloakedSchemer put it, girls just feel "right" to me.

    16. I'm female and I like female dolls a bit more. I think it's fun to go all out girly on them with their clothes and hairstyles, which I'm often unable to do in daily life. I'm also more comforable with designing and making clothing for females.

The male dolls also definitely have their own appeal, for sure, though!

    17. I'm a female and I don't think I'll ever purchase a male doll.. I don't enjoy having male characters AT ALL so spending 200$ + on a male doll seems pointless to me (that's for ME , thoguh, I'm not saying all male dolls are a wate)

    18. I just started my dollfie family with one boy and now a girl on the way. Perhaps that says something about who I'm attracted too :B

    19. I'm a female and though I don't have any BJDs yet, all the dolls in my wishlist (except for one) are all girls. The one that is a boy though is too large for me (I prefer mini's) so he's probably going off my list pretty soon...as pretty as he is :|

    20. I'm a female, with two boy dolls and one female tiny. I am attracted to boys, girls, and whatever inbetween.
I think I like boys more due to a couple things - One is that I like looking at pretty boys (I'm fairly attracted to androgeny, in both genders), which the BJD world has in abundance. It is nice to bring some home where they can sit on my shelf and be pretty. It's hard to find real pretty boys to look at, and harder still to find one for myself XD

The other is that I already have a female to dress up and make pretty - myself. I don't do it very often, but if I felt like it I could put on a dress and maybe a little makeup, and ta-daa! All dolled up. So I guess I don't really have the urge to spruce up a female doll. My boy dolls have shapes that I can't have in real life, so it is a lot more fun to dress them up and make them look cool ^^

I kind of wish more companies made adult-yet-slightly-more-androgynous girls. It's like I have to choose between child dolls or super-boobies, which doesn't increase my appeal towards girl dolls much at all XD

My one girl tiny is here so I can have a doll to put the neat SOOM fantasy parts on and look cool :D
