dolls and gender [Just a weird thought!]

May 13, 2012

    1. Sadly it wasn't a match. I do think Saber Extra is lovely and maybe I would bond better with her but as for know I am interested in only male Bjds.

    2. It's weird how people associate certain things with the word "doll." My mother and brother used to be in the GI Joe collector group, and that was mostly men (pre-GI Jane). Anime collectors can have figurines. Somehow people think differently about "dolls" than they do about figurines or action figures.

    3. Yeah it's sad actually. My co- works would shun me if they even knew just because of the world doll.

    4. As a female, if someone told me that I haven't found the right BJD male yet, I'd be a little peeved.

Who says you need to have an equal number of males and females? Sometimes, buying the dolls you love ends up being that you buy more of - or only - one gender. The way my story for my dolls has unraveled is that I have at least 3 other females I need to shell and one other male doll. It just turned out that way.

A lot of times, people think that what you like in the BJD hobby translates into other areas of your life, but I think that most of that is untrue. Yes, things carry over, but not everything does. I wouldn't think a guy who wanted guy dolls emasculate or anything; I wouldn't think he had anything against women at all. There shouldn't be a quota of male and female dolls that you have to have.

You can't help liking what you like, and trying to force anything because other people are questioning who you are is just going to lead you to lie to yourself and making you unhappy. If people tend to not bat an eyelash if a woman wants only female dolls, it should go that way for guys who want male dolls, too.

    5. As a male collector...

I've only ever collected male dolls and only wanted male dolls. I think some of the girl dolls are cool but would not buy one. I just dont see myself brusing the hair and buying dresses. For me, the dolls are an extention of my inner self, hence me only buying male dolls.

As far as my sexuality goes...or anyone questing it...I could care less. I think most people are more apt to think youre weird/strange for collecting dolls period.

I also collect action figures the vast majority of which are male.

I'm mean whatever in the end, as long as I'm/you are happy with your dolls it dosent matter what sex the doll is...

      EDIT:

BUT...I do collect Monster High dolls and really only like the girls...except for the new Create-a-Monster boy sets...freaking AWESOME! But that isn't the same for me as the ABJD...

    6. My question is what do you female/male think about this? I don't think it's any different than preferring all human dolls as opposed to fantasy or all the same general skintone as the owner or me liking dark haired dolls.
Would you think any less of a male who only wants to collect other male dolls? Absolutely not! You like what you like! You shouldn't have to justify it.
Does the idea make anyone uncomfortable or question the male sexuality? I don't really understand this question. I'm completely comfortable with men of all sexual orientations, so even if I did associate interest in male dolls to interest in male people, it wouldn't make me uncomfortable.

As for myself I am a straight male and I don't feel any sexual attraction towards any dolls. My fiancรฉ thinks its strange and she thinks it's most likely because I haven't found the right Bjd female doll yet. Do you guys agree or disagree with her statement?

Totally disagree. It could be that you associate the DD with a "girly" toy like Barbies, and the male doll more with "boy toys", like action figures. Have you ever considered that little girls tend to prefer female dolls over males in general? I think very few people would consider that to mean most little girls will grow up lesbian and wanting a partner to look like Barbie. Little boys tend to prefer male action figures over female dolls, does that mean they'll all grow up gay and lusting after muscle men? Not really...Or it could just be as simple as the aesthetics of female dolls just do nothing for you. I'm female, but I much prefer the male dolls simple because I think most girl dolls are either childish and resemble porcelain dolls, or the adults are too stereotypically "pretty" and perfect. The boys feel more interesting to me, not just another pretty super model girl.

Lastly are there others guys that feel the same way as I do. Who simply only want to buy male dolls and why? I'm not a guy, but my husband owns a DZ Xi Aleister named Ron Jeremy. He's a very masculine straight man, Harley owner, take charge guy, 6'1", full beard....not at ALL "girly".....he likes having a gaming/drinking buddy at home and Ron serves that purpose. :P

EDIT: About buying dolls you're sexually attracted to? I find that weird and kind of creepy. I mean, ok, yeah, I'll admit I've said a doll was hot or sexy or drool-worthy or whatever, but I think buying one because he's fun to look at and buying one because you're sexually attracted to it are two VERY different things. And if someone tried to pass judgement on me based on my collection (whether that be that I'm gay/straight/pedophile/into bestiality...whatever) then I'd have to bluntly tell them I buy the dolls to be dolls, not sex toys.

    7. ...

So we start topics on how men collecting only female dolls is weird, then posts on how men dress girls in skimpy clothing, then how men buying male dolls is weird...

How about we accept that the men in this hobby are as varied as the women (and maaaaan are we varied!) and that they should just do what they want without getting singled out and questioned as to whether what they do or don't do is because they posses certain genitals? We women hate it when guys do it to us, why would we do it to them?

    8. Thank you thank you thank you. Urgh. Enough with this kind of debate already.

    9. I am a straight female and I only have female dolls. I did have a Soom Spinel who I thought was stunning but I just never used to do anything with him and wasn't as inspired to make him outfits as I am with the girls. I wouldn't question your sexuality, I don't see the correlation between sexuality and hobby though I know many here might disagree. We just buy the dolls that appeal to us. Some people buy Soom dolls with enormous chicken feet but I presume they don't require their sexual partners to wear enormous chicken feet in bed.... OK, maybe some do! tee hee ;)

    10. I don't understand dismissing an entire gender based off of not liking a single doll... but if you don't like ANY of the female dolls you've encountered, then it's not weird that you know you like only male dolls.

    11. I guess that'd make me half and half then? I'm female, but with my 70 plus dolls, 75% are male. I have a male side, that's who comes out more often than not, and I feel more comfortable with that side out. I've never had many friends, mostly people I see on occasion, and for some reason feel more comfortable with males, so most of my crew are male. I find them fastinating. I do have girls and dress them up, but the males I feel like I can hang out with them, and just shoot the breeze.

I'd say do what you want. You live only once, unless reincarnation is really real! Enjoy your life. Ignore those who have nothing good to say. If you only want male dolls, get them! Of the five I'm saving for, only one is a female. So yeah, do your thing, let others worry about their thing.

    12. @Duskkodesh

I'm also on board with this.
The debate forum is getting ridiculous

    13. Im a girl and I prefer girl dolls to dess them up in clothes i wouldnt/couldnt but i do want a male doll in the future :)

    14. I'm a guy that prefers male dolls. There is only like...one female doll I'm interested in. I'm ftm, so I feel happier handling male dolls over female dolls, wich tends to make me feel very dysphoric,

    15. I am a female, and when I first decided I wanted a BJD, I went looking for a girl, because the vast majority of my (non BJD) dolls in the past had been girls. BUT... I found myself looking at the boys more! I have always been a fan of the anime esthetic (ever since I discovered "Speed Racer" when I was four!), and I loved the look of the boys. Out of my 24 current BJDs, only 5 are girls, but I have another girl on the way, so she will make my female BJD percentage go up to 25%. (It's never been higher than that, I think.)

I feel like I relate better to the guys, because I have never been a particularly feminine person myself. And I think I like my Volks SD13 girls because their figures are similar to what my figure was like when I was younger, which makes them familiar, and they are not glamourous high fashion girls. I never thought I would have a glamourous BJD. But now I DO have one girl who has rather large breasts, and I really like them on her! They suit her character very well, and her faceup is very glamourous too. I have also since acquired another mature female BJD who is very pretty, and my next girl will be mature too. But I do think a lot of this has to do with the addition of quite a few older male BJDs in my household, rather than any particular desire of mine to have more girls! I like having the girls for the guys to interact with.

There are fewer female BJDs that I like, too. It's VERY easy for me to find guys I like!! :fangirl: And I still overwhelmingly prefer the less realistic sculpts.

    16. I have both male and female dolls...way more female than male, I had three SD males but sold two of them so I am down to Just my DikaDoll Finn Swordsman. As far as MSD I do have one male, a sweet Angelheim Luka Wolf. The rest are all girls. But the LARGE portion of my dolls are cats...cats...human cats, blue cats, fancy cats, cats in hats, cats with heels. All are female except for my off topic Mushroom Peddler Grin. Decidely male is he.

I have always loved cats and have 16 real ones in addition to volunteering for a rescue group. Maybe that is why so many cat dolls. Female...just like the dolls I have seen better and love the clothes for them. They are extensions of me in that respect. They wear what I can't. The cat thing...yeah...probably because I would like to be a huge human cat chimera like my Luna Tamers.

    17. That is freaking awful!! I am 58, work in a very manly production field...I am the only female in our electrical maintenenace department at a large facility that manufactures nuclear fuel rods. I build, install, maintain, and troubleshoot huge pieces of complicated electrical equipment that create and test the rods for nuclear reactors. And EVERYONE knows I collect the dolls. I have brought some to work to show my co-workers. Some are creeped out but mostly they like them. Luna Tamer made quite a hit LOL. If you enjoy the hobby who cares what others say!! If they shun you then it is their loss not yours.

    18. I'm a female (but not even remotely feminine and quite assexual) and I love female dolls, and have lots of female characters to 'resinise' into BJDs. One rule I set for myself is to have an even number of guy and girl dolls by the time I'm done, but guy characters are really difficult for me to create, no matter how I wanted to. I will love to have more guy characters, but I also have difficulty finding what I like in the male body, unlike the female body. And I love androgyny for male dolls, overly buff and masculine dolls put me off, and that really limit me, since realistic, slightly feminine guy dolls are really difficult to find.

    19. I am a physically-female, gender-ambiguous BJD enthusiast, and do not currently own a male BJD, nor do I intend to acquire one in the near future. Your theory does not apply to me. I have noticed that many members of this board own dolls whose sexes deviate from their owner's. However, there are exceptions. Most of the BJD owners I know tend to collect a medley of BJDs in terms of sex, and have a collection that is rather diverse in that regard as a result. I've noticed, though, that many BJD owners are prone to sex favoritism in terms of BJD ownership, and I am no exception.
Like CloakedSchemer, I've never felt as though who I am is aligned with my sex. I've always been considered the "it" child in terms of gender, and never adhered to, or felt the need to conform to traditional societal sex roles. But regarding doll preference, it's the opposite for me: I only feel "right" with female dolls (this seems to correlate with my sexuality).

    20. I guess it depends on the individual. While I do have a few boys that I like on my wishlist, the majority of them are female, and I am a girl. My interest in one gender has more to do with aesthetic qualities than it really does the gender of the doll itself. I personally just find the girls to be cuter and more visually appealing.

... Plus girls are more fun to shop for.
