dolls and gender [Just a weird thought!]

May 13, 2012

    1. I'm of neutral gender and just bought a doll I'm planning to mod to be neutral-bodied. I don't know if I completely count in your theory, since I'm straight up the middle and want to dress my doll in everything. ;)

    2. I'm a girl and I like girl dolls better. For me it's the greater variety of clothing that does it for me. Guys have shirts and pants (unless you go into cross-dressing) versus girls with skirts, shirts, pants, and dresses. Also, I'm so used to sewing for curvy girls that I've almost forgotten how to sew straight lines! :sweat

    3. Eh not really. I am a male and I would only like to collect male BJD. While my fiancé is a female who only want to collect DD's. She has no interested in buying a male doll and I really have no interest in her female dolls.

    4. I'm a girl, but I will say that so far I have more girl dolls than boy dolls (I have a total of 5, and only 1 is male xP). I do have both male and female characters planned in the future, but I have found it more of a challenge to find male sculpts that I like. That being said, Dollzone's Hong is perhaps the one male sculpt that I've wanted ever since I first got into this hobby (and I believe I might have even seen him before and liked him... he's such a wonderful sculpt!)

I do also agree with what some others have said, that it tends to be MUCH easier to find items for female dolls. For example, Deb's Adorables on eBay has some great, easily affordable shoes for MNFs that fit PERFECTLY, but about 90% of the styles look like they would be too feminine for a male.

    5. I'm a female and I have an equal spread of boys and girls. I started off with boy dolls but I've been buying girls more recently. I honestly don't see myself buying another boy anytime soon.

I just like girls better. They're more fun to dress and I just find myself liking the way their bodies look.

    6. I'm a boy...man....whatever... and I collect only boy dolls. In my head, if I get a girl doll...its a doll. I couldn't imagine what to do with a girl doll, although the wardrobe can get alot more interesting. Now boys I can relate to.

    7. Well, I am a girl and I have only girl dolls. You have to remember that most girls grew up playing with barbies. A lot of my enjoyment of BJDs comes from the nostalgia of playing with barbies when I was young. I also agree with other posts that male dolls are rarely handsome. I have only seen a few that I liked, but none enough to buy. I like girl dolls because I like girl things! Like hair, clothes, shoes, and makeup! LOL

    8. Interesting thought but for me, I collect dolls that I like regardless of gender. I have almost an even split male vs female.

    9. I'm a girl and currently have one girl. I'm hoping to buy her a sister and a boy (I'm waiting till Obitsu release their 65cm male). But girls are easier to dress up. :)

    10. Personally I like both female and male dolls, but I am slightly more interested in male dolls. I guess because I like experimenting what a good male doll would look like (to me). It's somewhat more fascinating then dressing a girl doll up when you know what girls like in clothing. I am a girl by the way. Very interesting topic though. :)

    11. I find female dolls more appealing and I can relate to them more.
I also own male dolls, though not as many as female ones.
Even though I prefer a gender in dolls, that doesn't mean that I like the dolls themselves more or less depending on their gender. I like them in a different way, for different things, but equally.

    12. Currently I only have girls and I am a girl.

I think for a long time the idea of having an anatomically correct male doll sort of put me off from having boys. Now it doesn't bother me, perhaps because I'm older? I'm not really sure. (For reference I was 16~17 when I first fell in love with BJDs and am 22 now, if it makes any difference)

I have two dolls in planning (just in my head, no known sculpts yet) and both are males. I'm really looking forward to having a male doll to dress up! My Alice is such a girly girl that it's going to be fun having a guy around. I keep seeing awesome outfits that I love, but don't work for her.

    13. im a girl and i do collect boys i find it funner to dress the boys and make them stories, i only resently started looking at girl dolls and bought a girl i do like her but still like boy dolls more

    14. i'm female and all my dolls are female, but a lot of them are very androgynous looking. i like it that way.

i've seen some male dolls i liked, but my primary attraction to them was because they look androgynous.

basically, my preference is for female or indeterminate gender (for example, i like male dolls that appear female- so maybe that's the exception). i'm not saying i'll never buy a 'masculine' male doll (and i've seen some amazing pictures of other collectors' dolls), but i just don't feel drawn or attracted to them in the same way.

      everyone is different.

    15. I don't have any dolls as of yet, but my wishlist is only female dolls at the moment. Not sure if I'll end up getting a male doll at any point, but I don't see why not! Once I see a sculpt I really like, on the wishlist it goes!

As for why, I plan on making a lot of clothes for my dolls (and for myself), and as a girl I have a better understanding of how women's clothing is meant to fit. Oddly, though, I plan on dressing them in a lot of menswear for women. Not sure why, I just love how traditionally male clothes look on women!

    16. I'm a girl and most of my dolls are boys.
It's easier to find an attractive male sculpt than it has been to find pretty female sculpts in my opinion.

    17. I love female dolls, and I am female.
I would like to have a healthy mix of both genders, but I would only be interested in male dolls that I find sexy. :D
And since I'm a very picky person, the male dolls that I find attractive are very few and wide.
For girls, I like anything, from sultry to beautiful to adorable, and so I have an easier time bonding with the different kinds of sculpts.
Besides, I feel that the market isn't very large for male dolls, and I feel like I have very little options when it comes to attire and wigs.
      That's just my 2 cents though. :)

    18. I always prefer girl dolls over boy dolls. I guess because being a girl, I can roleplay a lot easier than being a girl. And that whole "stage" mom thing, there are so many things that my doll can pull off in terms of clothes and style where I can't (or refuse to coz I look awkward)

    19. I like girl dolls just as much a boy dolls, I just haven't found many sculpts that appeal to me. Lately, more girl head molds come out with a bit more spunk, but when I first came into this hobby, Madoka was the only 'fiercer' looking doll. I just don't like the sweet and innocent look on girls.

Now, I have several girl dolls on my wishlist and as soon as I've found bodies for my floating heads, I'm going to save up for them.

    20. i am a girl and what i collect is girls because i think they are much cuter, I some times dress my yo-sd's as boys
