dolls and gender [Just a weird thought!]

May 13, 2012

    1. ive mainly been looking at males purely because i dont like looking at naked girls. i will eventually get a girl and she will be a rather modest dresser

    2. I have both a male and a female doll at the moment. I do confess to having wanted to buy a male BJD for my first doll because when else in life would I get to experiment with male fashion and styling? (I intend to let my future children pick their own clothes as soon as they can - I think I may regret it!). Of course, there was also the fact that I tend to just prefer the male's sculpting because there's an aspect of newness to it. I see a girl face and body every day when I look in the mirror.

I got my girl because I wanted a girl to dress up and a girlfriend for my guy. I love her too, but not as much as Ces. I think it's to do with him being my first doll and his personality more than their genders though.

If I could get the three dolls on my current wish list I would have 2 girls and 3 boys. I want twin yo-SDs of both sexes to be Seraphine and Cesavier's children, so as a result of that it'd stay gender balanced, however I want a 70cm guy doll to be Cesavier's (inexplicably giant like) brother as well. I've seen a lot of beautiful female sculpts in the bigger sizes but I just think I'd feel more comfortable with a boy doll, maybe because I'm less afraid of breaking them (I'm careful with every doll I handle and I've not had a doll related accident yet, but I have an irrational fear of dropping girl dolls). Also I really like some of the clothing for the larger dolls in general, and I still enjoy dressing up the guys more than the girls (I suppose because I can dress myself up whenever I want, but I'd be hard pressed to find any of my guy friends or relatives that'd let me anywhere near their wardrobes/hair).

With my own gender I don't particular care about being male/female all that much. If I woke up a guy tomorrow I'd be fine as long as I was still me in my head. I don't try to define myself by any gender stereotypes, although to look at me I'm most definitley female in my physicality and heterosexual. I don't really have a gender in my head though *shrug*.

    3. I have only girl dolls (bar a pukipuki), and I want a guy doll. I really do. My problem is I find one I like and then find a girl I like better next to him on the page *_*. I like to dress girls. I sew and like dresses. However, I don't wear much of those things. I work a lot and mostly just wear my work clothes or pjs. I want a big-brother type boy for my girls, though.

Also, when I write I really like to get inside my characters heads and I feel most comfortable doing that with girls because I have a female brain to match. I know how it works. Boys are a whole new exploration...

    4. I'm a female and prefer female dolls. I would like to have a boy doll eventually, but my preference is mostly girl dolls. This is simply because I like the clothing and styling options of a girl better then boys. When I do decide to finally go ahead and buy a boy doll, I think I will have a hard time finding a mold I like, honestly. I like smaller dolls, and MSD boys all seem so soft and feminine looking, which doesn't appeal to me.

    5. Im a girl but i like boy dolls and girl dolls but they cant have big "tracts of land" if u get what i mean. i tend to lean to boys.

    6. I'm a girl and I do rather female dolls over male dolls, I found a perfect male doll recently but I still like more female dolls since they are more varied than males, maybe if there were more options, specially on bodies, I want a buffed body for boy a doll.

    7. I'm female and so as the gender of all my dolls, i prefer girl dolls simply because boobs make them looking mature dressing up

    8. I don't know that I agree with this completely. With boys, I only ever see them with girl dolls. I'm not saying that boys never buy boy dolls, I just never see them. So maybe boys might have a tendency for that, but I see girls with both, pretty evenly split. I myself find that I want girl dolls more, but I do want at least one boy for each girl so they can be in "pairs." So I feel like this doesn't necessarily apply to girls.

    9. I'm a girl and I collect boy dolls... Cool looking, well-dressed males just appeal to me more, I guess. I like androgynous girls too, but then I'd rather spend the money on a boy than a girl that looks like a boy.
Recently I got into Dollfie Dreams though, I don't know, I guess it stems from my love of anime and moe. Now I have 6 boys and 4 girls. I love Dollfie Dreams, but I'm still not particularly interested in other girl BJDs.

    10. I lean towards wanting female dolls. There is so much more out there option wise for a female doll. It's really hard for me to find a male sculpt I like enough to want to own. Or dress.

    11. All I own are female dolls and that's all I intend to own. For me it would just be a little weird to have a naked guy in my room. Plus I'm just not into all these feminine looking guys. Nothing's worse for me than when I see a doll and am like wow that's a pretty girl...then I find out it's a guy. Some I'm like ok...it works. Others I find myself going, really? are you kidding me? From what I think I know, all the bigger manly man dolls are really expensive. So I'll just stick with the girl dolls.

Also I have to agree with some other people. Girls just have more options clothes wise. I'm sorry, if I had a guy doll, he would not be wearing a dress. Just not gonna happen. My dolls are like me, straight and not cross-dressers. Chances are they'd be dressed like me...jeans and a tshirt or polo. Where's the fun in that. Girl dolls are just more fun for me.

Only way I'd ever get a guy doll is if he was muscular and I had a green lantern outfit for him to wear. And he'd probably just wear that FOREVER. So yeah...Girl dolls all day.

    12. I'm female, and I've got a nice round collection of both boys and girls. My first doll was a boy, solely because male dolls (OTHER than BJD; I'm just not into Barbie-type dolls anymore) are SO rare, especially anatomically correct male dolls. The idea amused me greatly so I had to see for myself. Secondly, I'm a big fan of anime and love the thin, long-limbed pretty boys. I'm also a fan of elves and other faery types (I'd say 95% of my collection has pointy ears of some kind). So these dolls appealed to me aesthetically as three-dimensional anime characters AND faeries. My second, third, and fourth dolls were all female, come to think of it, before I bought another male. And six years into the hobby, my total count is:

      14 boys
      17 girls

This isn't including the two bodies from Fairyland (one of each gender), and the faery girl and big hooved boy from Soom I have coming.

Right now I have more girls than boys. That could change in the future. I just buy what I like and don't really care what gender it is. :)

    13. mmm....

      Well...

Physically, I'm female. But mentally, I identify with androgyny. My collection is a nice mixture of both girls and boys, all of various sexual orientation and fashions.

    14. Boys, boys and only boys! I have no urge to have any female dolls. I find the boys far more attractive and I'm far more comfortable with them. I think choosing a doll has maybe got something to do with what we are attracted to in life as well as being able to obtain an ideal or make a character we have in our mind. My boys often wear very ornate outfits such as kimono, goth & leather gear and are not against cross dressing. As for myself well ?????????

    15. I am female and foresee only collecting female dolls. While I have seen male sculpts that I like, they are all in the 60-70cm range, and I don't want dolls that big. Tiny/mini male sculpts just look too dainty and girly to me. If I one day see one I like in the size I like, I won't rule out owning a male doll.

    16. I get your meaning on the 'wasting money' feeling. I however like to shove my boy dolls into non-striped, non-plaid, non-boy-boring things that at least ONE of them would sometimes not approve of. Lol frumpy modern clothing... tis' in my opinion the result of the downfall of the confused, sexually frantic ages of the 'beautiful male'. You might be surprised at how lovely traditional asian style clothing for men is, and how much relative respect people actually have for it strictly because of it being ASIAN, where they would otherwise consider it very feminine... (and make fun of a guy or a doll wearing it...) If you like fantasy warriors, adventurer clothes and armor could be fun to find. I've seen a LOT of mages in these parts. :) You can do a lot with either gender. Through dolls maybe, some people even get a deeper understanding of the nature of gender. That's what it seems like to me, anyhow.

    17. I am a girl, and I have only been buying girl dolls so far O:
I love dressing ladies. If I had a male, I would make him either gay, or a cosplay <33
And have a mate for him xD
Or make fan cosplay pairings *ideas*

    18. Male who only gets female dolls!
      WOOT WOOT!

    19. I'm a female, 14/25 of my planned dolls are female, the rest are male, so it's almost even. My first doll is male and my second is female. But I am more drawn to more female dolls, I assume this is because as a female I feel it's easier to create female characters knowing what it's like to actually be female. But I really love both and am just as excited about having my male characters shelled as I am about the females.

    20. I'm 21 and female, but somehow I'm more attached to boy dolls, specially in YoSD size =D
but maybe in the future I might like girls, just I still not found the sculpt I like yet XD
