dolls and gender [Just a weird thought!]

May 13, 2012

    1. I'm a girl, and I collect both boy and girl dolls. :3 of my SDs, I have two boys and four girls - but my minis are a 5:1.5 split in the boys' favor (one of my girls is a floating head xD). My tinies are an even split - one boy and one girl! :D

    2. i'm a boy and i collect boy dolls. so no i dont think this is very accurate.. however ive known a lot of girls who do like to collect boy dolls but it just comes down to personal preference.

    3. Hm, I was born female, but I'm a boy in my mind.. but I love both female and male bjds ^^
I haven't even got my first doll yet (a MNF Chloe, and she'll arrive in next week!) but I've already planned on getting a boy next time :3
It's just, I love to write small stories and then, I save up to dolls that fit in the stories.. ^v^''

    4. I'm a woman. 7 of my 13 BJD are male, so that's slightly more than half. I will admit that I do have a preference for male BJD, and my next three dolls on my wish list are all male, but my ultimate decision on which doll to get is not based exclusively on the doll's gender. My doll choices are based on personal preference, what I find attractive, what fits in my collection, etc.

    5. Well, I find myself looking at (and coveting) girl dolls more often than boy dolls. I simply find them to be prettier, which is fair. They also have prettier clothes, prettier shoes, and prettier accessories. Since I find myself drawn to pretty things, it's fairly natural that I would prefer girl dolls.

However, there's one problem with the majority of them: they have breasts. And since I'm going to be sewing most, if not all, of my doll clothes for the foreseeable future, it's a bit of an issue for me. Tailoring girl clothes can be difficult, with all of the curves and roundness. So, I have my Liam boy instead. He's currently wearing a very dapper little (sock) sweater, waist-high, knee-length pencil skirt, and lace tights. He's easy to fit for dresses and other prettiness because I don't have to taper and tailor and fit around breasts and hips and nipped-in waists. And, yes, I know that I sound bananas.

But, really, I would be happy with boy or girl dolls, if only I could sew for a girl properly. I'm even planning on getting girl dolls, but that's a ways off, both financially and skill-wise. Until then (and probably after, as well), Liam will keep getting pretty little dresses and skirts as well as boy clothes. I imagine, though, that as I get more dolls and get better at sewing, I'll have at least one boy doll that won't cross-dress the majority of the time.

Finally, overall, I think that the prettiness and attractiveness of the sculpt matters more to me than the actual gender of the doll. Just a final thought. Oh, and before I forget, I'm a girl.

    6. I'm female and I got a boy and a girl doll as my first dolls. I also have a third doll coming and she's a girl, too. I'm pretty even between the genders, I don't seem to prefer one over the other. I have lots of different reasons for getting into this hobby, so since I don't have a main focus, I have the opportunity to experience variety and enjoy both genders of dolls ... and dolls without genders.

    7. I'm female, and I only really want female dolls :) I think I'm far more picky with how my boy dolls must look for me to buy them. I've only really found one I am willing to buy, but so many girls. I think I just feel like I could be far more interested in and creative with styling my female dolls.

    8. From what I've seen, that tends to be true in general that people like to collect the opposite sex. I personally would like to own one of each eventually. I currently only have a boy doll. My mom thinks it's strange that I wanted a boy doll and thinks it's odd for a girl to own a boy doll. She even asked my why I wanted a boy doll.

I think for me, since I'm a girl, it would be fun to be able to explore men's fashion and such with a boy doll. I am already familiar with girls fashion and such, so, girl dolls tend to not interest me as much.

    9. My best friend found it odd that, in the beginning, I was only getting female dolls. I don't wear makeup and I don't have a "model" body, so I find that I am even more creative with females since I couldn't pull off half the outfits my dolls can lol. But now, if I count up all my dolls, I am pretty much at half male half female. I sorta got tired of doing the same gender all the time, I guess. Plus, my dolls now tend to be either dolls I just fell in love with or an idea I have that I want to bring to life.

    10. I'm a girl I have two dolls so far, a SD girl and a tiny boy. When it comes to dolls I plan to get or look at, I fall in love with the boy sculpts more often, but I would enjoy having the girls more because I can dress it up more and the clothes are easier to find. But I'd feel much happier getting a boy and carrying him around. I just wish they had more options for clothes.

    11. I'm not too sure. Personally, I like both girl and boy dolls, but generally, I just find boy dolls somehow prettier. It doesn't have to do with the gender or anything. I try to even them out though. c:

    12. To me, it seems that yaoi/BL fans tend to collect many boy dolls. >.> Yaoi/BL fans tend to be female, hence many girls having boy dolls.

I'm a girl and I collect mostly male dolls. I've had many girl dolls but I find it hard to bond with them but I need to have girl dolls since I love buying them dresses and I don't want to put my boys in them. I've had MSD and SD16 girls, sold both cos I wasn't bonding. I now have 2 SD girls and love them. Also, find female dolls not as beautiful as male ones.

    13. I'm a guy, and I only have female dolls.

I grew up with male action figures, and while I enjoyed playing with them a lot and still like them, it's not like I ever felt like I bonded with one. If I got a male doll, I think I would feel the same way. They would be good to go on an adventure with, but they wouldn't be something that I felt like I had a more complex relationship with. Well, that's overstating it by quite a bit, but I hope you get my point. When I would play with my action figures, it would be about going on a mission or finding treasure, but there wouldn't be much interpersonal stuff going on. With my dolls, when I do photostories, it's all interpersonal stuff, and that makes for all kinds of relationships. I end up feeling invested in those relationships, and I want them to turn out well. (Even if the story calls for a relationship to end badly.)

Maybe it's because female dolls are female, and maybe it's a bit sexist in some philosophies, but I feel a bit more of a desire to treat them well.

I'd be lying if I said I didn't find them more visually appealing than male dolls, too  But it's not all about the mature attractiveness that a few of them have. I just find myself liking pretty female dolls :) That includes dolls that range from the gorgeous grown women all the way to the adorable younger girls I have. I love them all in their own way.

Being a guy who only wears regular guy clothes, I never get the chance to try out women's clothes. I think they're fascinating, and I love that I can explore that type of clothing through my dolls. I enjoy admiring the clothes almost as much as I enjoy admiring the dolls wearing the clothes! Pretty dresses and beautiful gowns and cute skirts and adorable blouses! I'm not much of a shoe guy, but I have gained an appreciation for doll shoes, too. I've even spent way too much money on limited Volks shoes on the secondhand market :sweat

But I know it's not just guys who have had dolls make them do things they normally wouldn't do with their money

    14. I'm a female, and I collect mostly female dolls. Not because I'm sexually attracted to females (or not), but because I tend to create and style female characters. I suppose I have no use for man dolls because I don't have any adult male characters in my head to realize. I have a couple of little boy dolls... one yo-size and one mini-size. I can relate to little boy characters, but adult male characters, so far, not at all.

I can admire the adult male dolls in the abstract, appreciate their sculptural beauty and how their owners do them up, but so far I have no desire to own one myself. Maybe someday? :-)

    15. I'm a female and the only doll I have is female. I'm bringing home two more female dolls soon and will also be adding a male doll. I find that I like male dolls more than female dolls. All of my favorite sculpts happen to be male, but being a girl I wanted to have a female doll first. When I see a female doll that I think is beautiful I don't get that need to have feeling. There are a lot of girl dolls that I do like, but I just don't want them for some reason. I searched for a good year and a half for my first doll. I just couldn't connect with any of the female dolls in the preferred size or price range. Finally, Iplehouse released JID Soa and I knew right away she was the doll for me. It's been a year since I've received her and I recently came across two female tinies that I want. Meanwhile, I have no trouble finding male dolls that I want and will bring home when the time is right. I have a very short list for female dolls and a huge list for male dolls. I want to get a good balance between the sexes though.

    16. I'm a guy and I have both boys AND girls dolls. I think that the only important matter about the doll gender is their character. if you want to build a boy character, you choose a male doll, and a female doll for a girl.

    17. I am a girl and I like boy dolls. I think it is just because I can't find my dream girl sculpt yet.

    18. I'm a woman with all female dolls (except for one). I guess I just love dresses! Female sculpts also seem to fit my aesthetic more than male ones. I've also always loved to play dress-up and be girly, so female dolls are a lot of fun!

    19. My collection of bjds and OT dolls are a pretty even mix of male and female - which makes sense since they are inhabiting an ever expanding "multiverse"

...But my wishlist is comprised of 90% male dolls...

    20. I like boy dolls more than girl dolls, but I still love my girls. D:
It isnt sexual because I'm bi. I like androgyny and thats really prevalent in the doll world. My girls are super girly, and my boys are girly too. xD
