Dolls and names

May 23, 2008

    1. Well since my last post, I've been thinking about names like mad and I've come up with a few possibilities.

Ruairi and Rowan, Earc and Earcnait (Ark and Arknit), Finn/Fionn and Fiona, these are the combos I've come up with so far and these are all from Irish Gaelic and all have meanings about being a redhead.

    2. I enjoy keeping a list of names that I like too! xD but you guys are lucky that you can keep the simple mold name that it comes with but okay! My dollie's name is Lucifer! like wtf do I do with that?? lol! So I plan on changing it. I had no idea what his name was when I first set eyes on him, I just saw his face and knew he was the one. After I scrolled and saw the name, I thought "How ironiiiiiic" Yeah. That sucks. hahahaah xPP

    3. I hear ya! I have yet to name my Cherishdoll Allie after quite a handful of months! She's not an Allie to me, but I can't figure out quite who she is yet!

    4. I love names and naming. All my dolls have names. Then again, most of my dolls are based on my OCs, so that's where their names originated.

As for calling the doll after the name of the sculpt, my incoming doll is a ResinSoul Mei, and I keep referring to her as "Mei". The character actually does have a name, but I have to see the doll in person first to decide whether this doll is actually going to be this character's avatar.

    5. Lilith is just Lilith at this point. I like the name. It probably won't ever change.

If I ever have the money and ability to get dolls that I can customize to look like the two main characters in my short stories, though... they'll obviously be named after those characters.

    6. Every doll I own has a different name than given by the company. Well... all but two:
      my Mini Gem Arem, there only a letter was changed from her company name Aren. ^^;
      And My dollzone sheep is actually named "sheep", it's just been translated to Korean. ^^;

    7. I don't think I could not name a doll. I think if the sculpt name was something I really loved I might be tempted but overall I have to much fun picking out names :)

    8. I enjoy picking a new name for my dolls, I think its all part of the fun. But I do struggle sometimes trying to decide which name to use xD

    9. All of my dolls have names I chose for them, and it's usually a long, labor-intensive process that involves making huge lists of names, whittling the list down a little choosing kanji (for my characters with Japanese names), whittling the list down more, and then I often wind up with two or three possible names but don't make the choice until the doll is actually here. Sometimes I have a character so set in my mind that the name comes easy and has been chosen well in advance of even ordering the doll, in which case the doll-search can be a little tougher because the doll has to fit a character and name that are already firmly established.

I came close to keeping my first doll's mold name though. She was a Delf Miyu and, as I waited for her and kept looking at the pictures on the Luts website, I started to feel like Miyu really fit her as a name. Plus trying to settle on the perfect name for her was starting to be a little stressful :sweat But then she arrived and I got her in the wig and clothes I had picked for her, and decided that Miyu didn't fit my particular version of the doll. She wound up being called Harumei instead. Since then I haven't felt particularly compelled to keep mold names, though since the mold names in my collection include things like I and Shine I guess that's a good thing :lol

    10. First, sorry if there is a thread like this already, and also if this isn't the correct section. I'm still trying to figure DoA out xD

I just got my first BJD (yay!) And am struggling to find a name for her. What I would like to see are some pictures of your lovely resin family members and for you state their names, and what about the doll or their personality that caused you to give them that name.

Hopefully, this will be a lot of fun, and I will find some sort of inspiration for naming my little girl ^_^

Mods please feel free to move this if it's in the wrong place.

    11. Here are some threads that have something to do with names:

      This one is VERY helpful!

      Dolls and Names

      Doll Names: Orginality vs Characters
      Keeping the sculpt name?
Have you ever renamed a doll?
Contentious doll names (gods and so on)

I don't have a group picture yet, but here are my dolls names:

Kiahn - he was supposed to have a dark character, so I looked up some names with a 'dark' meaning. I ended up with Kian or 'Ancient' in Gaelic and changed the spelling a bit. After 6 years I have still failed to come up with a proper surname.

Rembrandt Constantijn Harlingh - Three reasons, actually. First, I needed a name that sounded classical for a VOC trader character I made for a pirate RP. Second, I always loved Rembrandt van Rijn's paintings, and he lived roughly during the same age the RP was set in. And third, since this was the first doll I got in my current living place (which happens to be the painters birth place), so I named my doll after him. Constantijn is from the movie Constantine, one of my favorites, and Harlingh is a name I found on display in the VOC museum in Amsterdam. I like to think there was a R.C. Harlingh once that actually sailed the seven seas, just like my character.

Copper Harlingh: I bought a BF Tommy head and jokingly texted my friend I was going to call him Tommy Cooper. I misspelled it into Tommy Copper and right away, an image of a mori-boy from the woods popped into my head. The name Copper stuck even when I tried looking for better names xD I made him the nephew of my other character so they share the same surname.

Jyo Salvador Morrigan: Jyo is an RP character I have with a friend, and she actually came up with the name Jyo (gee-o). Morrigan just seemed to fit sound-wise, and I gave him the second name of Salvador after an RP in which he turned out to have had a brother with the same name that died before he was burn, just like Salvador Dalí.

So there you have it, I name my dolls in completely random ways. Sometimes I use name databases, or name them after meaningful people, or sometimes a weird text can give you an interesting name. The only thing I'd say as advice: don't put too much effort into giving your doll an 'original' name - just stick with the one you like and with one that suits your doll.

    12. I only have one doll at the moment, I had a different name planned for her originally but when I got her it just didn't suit her at ALL.
So I went through and thought off all the names in like on girls and found on that I liked a lot
Her name is Cecilia "CeCe" Jones. I found it suited her character more then Cinnie Jones (which is what her little sister will be named)
She's shy, bookish, kind of a nerd, and fairly quiet, but she is an adult, so I wanted something that could be cute and "grown up" at the same time.
I don't know if this will help at all though since this is my first experience with naming a doll
Here is a photo of her (she is not quite done yet, waiting on a new ginger coloured wig and a pair of glasses)

    13. This was extremely helpful! ^_^ Thanks for taking the time to post. She's such a beautiful doll I just love her lips. :D I'm tossing around a few names for my doll, I just can't seem to make up my mind *frustration*

    14. When I got my first BJD, I didn't know her name, but after putting her together and spending some time with her, I realised she was very much like the main character from a book I wrote when I was 15. Her name is Guenevere Bellè McMorrow. She's a young Duchess from the country of Lladdaine and she's in love with the king. Of course, my new two BJDs had to come from the same book: her friend (and a wizard), Sarah Ann Verand, and the young king, Brian Ain Strafford. This is Guen, Sarah, and Brian.

My next doll will be Eos, from a set of short stories I recently finished writing. After Eos (Eos de la Tour), I hope eventually to get her good friend and companion, Pol Danet. So obviously I pick my dolls' names (and my dolls) from my writing.

    15. I've got a couple themes when naming my dolls.

Rosebud Moss - the family name 'Moss' was settled and I want something cute and botanical for the first name.

灯鎖 (pronounce Hisa) - I want something Asian for his name, just because....

Valentine De la Prunus - well, the sculpt just screams 'Valentine' to me. The family name was totally random though.

Anemone Rosa - first name: same initial as the sculpt; family name: random

Other themes I'm using now are recycling old character names. Say, if a doll didn't work out, a new doll would take that name. It's like reshelling characters but mine don't necessarily stay the same.

For some of my girls, I'm digging the 'XXXXberry' names, Mulberry, Kingsberry, Iceberry for example. Also considering using my perfume collection to name my future dolls. A lot of perfumes make silly but easy to remember (for me) names: Jinx, Esquel, Echo, Eternity, Dune, just to name a few. The only perfume that's in my collection but can't see myself using as a doll name is J'Adore. lol

xD awww naming discussions~ I love them so! I have no group pictures ...almost... I completely forgot about one picture I had taken to upload on facebook... every member of my family is there except for one, my floating heads and the incoming ones. I'll link to these bellow and individual ones bellow. I'll start from left to right. All the dolls belong to the same story and multiverse that is shared with my best friend.

Eien Alfbjörn: [link] Eien's name means "eternity" in Japanese but that was sort of a coincidence. When I first saw him I knew that was his name and despite being a name enthusiast I only noticed that fact later. He's by no means Japanese or Asian but rather belongs to a race of immortal creatures called Fae from the world of Elysium (the Fae are the one of two Elysian races). An immortal creature with a name that means "eternity"... I suppose that worked out well xD

Arystar: [link] Arystar's name is basically a corruption of Alistar/Alistair anglicized form of Scottish Alasdair which derives from the Greek name Alexander. Alexander basically means 'one who protects men' or people in a sense. In the story, Arystar is a fox sprite and former shrine protector who is happily married to Anna, another sprite of his kind. His goal in life is also to protect her now, sooo yes.*

Choi Hyo Ri: [link] Now here's a name that wasn't picked out for having some deep complicated meaning. I struggled with Hyorin's name for the longest while but couldn't come up with any that suited her until I realized she was Korean so she had to have a Korean name. In the story she's an upcoming idol-in-training together with her friend, Ramiel, who she also pulled into it.

C AKA Cadence Landolt: [link] C abandoned his name after a certain incident several years ago in which his girlfriend at the time turned out to be an undercover agent sent to more or less do him in. The name "Cadence" was picked by his mother and doesn't have any deeper meaning. I did, however, pick his last name as a reference to the Landolt C (also known as Landolt ring) which is an optical test.*

Irie: [link] Irie's name is made up by the kanji that mean 'to enter' and 'inlet/haven'. Irie is a android of sorts that was built by Karl, an inventor with a knack for naming his creations with all-round Japanese names. Her "sister" is named Ai.

Finnick: [link] this feisty tiny boy is actually named Finnegan Nickolas. Finnick is just an abbreviation of both.

Nowe Alfbjörn: [link] Eien's older brother. His name is a form of Nowell, which is a name that means "reliable" which his character is also supposed to be even though I had picked his name before he even had a character, him being my very first doll.*

Yui: [link] (together with my friend's little AS Yuma, Noche) Yui's name means 'to tie/bind' in Japanese. It's written just 結 and read used its nanori reading. The name was picked because both his older and younger siblings (owned by my friend) also have 'Yu' sounds in their names -their names being Yue and Yuliya-.*

Hellel: [link] Hellel's name is a corrupted form of Hebrew Hillel which means 'light bringer' and is also one of the names of Lucifer. In the story Hellel is an angel from the heavenly kingdom of Caelum who was cast out after being accused of mass-slaughtering their fellow kin on a certain incident.*

Shainto: [link] Shainto is nicknamed 'Saint' for being kind, charitable and always ready to help others; his name, however, just means 'working person' in Japanese.*

Lucifer: no picture because he's still my baldie Luts Wintery '09 head. Lucifer is one half of a pair of fraternal twins; his brother is Belial. Together they are the Devil's youngest children. Their older brothers also have names that are more or less different names attributed to their father, the oldest being Shaitan and then second oldest being Mephistophelles.*

Alva Fasjovik: Alva is my still bald and bodyless Luts Wintery '11 girl head. Alva and her identical twin sister, Paulina, are a pair of genius stylists and managers from Sweden. Thus... my friend and I picked Swedish names for them. Alva is the feminine form of Alf, meaning 'an elf'. **

Mephist: no picture again as I'm waiting on him, Mephistophelles, commonly known as Mephist or, more endearingly, Mephy, is Devil's secondborn son and will be a Doll Chateau kid Hugh. (funnily enough, they go in reverse order in regards to size. Luce and Bell are SD-sized, Mephist is MSD and Shaitan is yoSD)

Ealdwine: Ealdwine is the name of my Dollzone tan Hal that I'm currently saving for. It's an old English name that means "old friend".

    17. Naming discussions are always interesting to read. :>
Gladly I don't have that problem - so far - as my three dolls are all named and desinged after original characters of mine, so the names were there before and I choose a fitting mold for them. ^^
      Probably just as hard though.

'Group' Picture, my little girl is still missing as she isn't home yet. :'D

All of my boys and girl originate from the same made-up fantasy world my original stories play in. I prefer fantasy a lot ... well yeah. XD

Erimes: The feisty thief is actually one of my oldest still existing OCs. His name was originally an abbrevation of Eremes, one of my two favorite assassins from Ragnarök - into the Abyss/Ragnarok Online. That was ... aaaages ago.

Kaith Brightfeather: Or Kaith in short is a half human half dragon hybrid. He has feather wings though, similar to a bluebird, hence the name. His first name was chosen pretty much random from names I like.

Siney Arcane / Sin Akaria: Youngest of five children and only daughter of the dragon god I wanted to have something feisty but cute for the little goddess of war. Her original name is Sin, but her brothers tend to call her Siney so she picked it up eventually. Akaria is the family name and she changed it to Arcane later as cover as it was fitting for her magician self.

I'm planning a few more character dollies in the future, but for now I need to save. :D

    18. I prefer to choose my own names for my dolls. Currently, I only have two (though there is another 2 on the way).

My DDoll Bobo has been re-named Aithne (pronounced ahn-yah). I knew i wanted a name that could translate (pronunciation wise) easily to japanese (as my character is supposed to be japanese) but I also wanted a gaelic name, because i just find gaelic names quite beautiful.

the final decision for most names comes down to the meaning of the name. In this case, Aithne means little flame. She is a ball of energy and an adorable little girl, so to me is seemed an appropriate name.

My Iplehouse JID Daniel has been re-named Takeo. He is Aithne's older brother, thus, japanese name. In this case, he is a protective older brother who would give the world to Aithne if he could, and so i chose Takeo, written with the two kanji 武 - warrior, 雄 - brave.

I imagine when my two girls arrive i will change their names as well.

    19. i actually based my first 2 dolls' name from FF7, coz im a huge fan of Cloud Strife and Aerith Gainsborough XD
as for my incoming dolls, i just randomly gave a name to them haha XD

I got the name Sky for my doll-love zozo because i wanted to use the name Cloud for him but his father's name is Strife already. So it will be weird if I named him Cloud haha XD

as for my msd sakura, I got the name Kiyomi (清美) for her coz she's a Japanese (i took it literally haha). and the name suits her well coz she looks so innocent and refreshing =))

    20. I don't think I could ever leave a doll with the sculpt name... The doll I'm saving for currently already has a name picked out for her in my mind, but it took me a while to work it out. I've chosen the name Aska because I'm studying German and Old High German, and Aska is an OHG word meaning 'ashes' - which a, sounds nice, and b, fits with my handle here which means 'dust'. So it fit her instantly, and I know what I'll call her even though I don't have her home yet.
