Dolls and names

May 23, 2008

    1. I'm going to give the names of my characters to the dolls. The main difficulty is to think of a name for the character...:)

    2. I call my Puki the names of the mold company - Ruby and Sugar, or Miracle.
Their original names I can not think .. I was so far and so satisfied with everything.

    3. Hmmm, how would you feel about calling your Wang Zi as Prince instead? Since Wang Zi means prince in Chinese but the syllable Zi itself is only a suffix.

I had a very hard time naming my yo too. Nothing I thought up would fit him. I eventually resorted to consulting my favorite Tarot deck and it as good as said the yo's true name was as plain as the nose on my face. I felt somewhat obtuse and settled with the name Ai (love in Japanese) since when I first opened Ai's box love was the feeling effusing from the little fellow.

Back on topic, I've always found the name Saiph very pretty and is my second choice of name after Ariadne for her.

    4. Before I got Lorelai I refered to her as Mabel (Leeke Mabel) and sometimes I will accidentally refer to Madison as Ani (Luts Ani).

    5. I actually thought about just keeping the doll I plan on getting's name 'Luka', but I would always have an image of the pink-haired Vocaloid pop in to my head, so I decided against it. I'm pretty terrible about thinking about fitting names with out websites and exstensive research on whether or not TOO many people use that name. I'm pretty weird about that.

    6. The dolls I plan on getting are modelled after characters that I already have created, so, having either a. found a sculpt that fit a character well or b. creating a character based off of a mold I love, I usually have names for them already. But some have been surprisingly difficult to name. I have a character in mind for a Luts Cherry that I want, and for the longest time nothing suited her better, until I decided on "Sharee" which really just sounds similar so... lol Kind of the same on that one. :)

    7. I had my Aiden (Volks SDGr Minoru) for five or six months before I finally named him, and mostly because my mom didn't like "Minoru" and he didn't really fit it anymore once I swapped him out of his fullset wig.

However, my Customhouse Ange Ai Gaby stayed the closest to her sculpt name with only a slight change to Gabby (since, phonetically, "Gaby" would be pronounced in English with a long a, rather than the short vowel that typically comes before a double consonant...) But I only did that because I'm an English teacher (can you tell? >_<) and knowing the difference would've bugged me. (I'm a nerd, yes.)

Her sister, a Raffy sculpt, was renamed Phoebe despite my mom (who treats my dolls like grandkids) thinking that "Raffy" was a totally acceptable name for a little girl. Not so.

I think it depends on preference whether or not to rename a doll. I used to think I wouldn't be able to remember the sculpt of my dolls if I didn't keep the face sculpt name attached to the doll, but I think I'll be okay. As far as taking your time to name a doll? I don't see a problem with that. ^^

    8. Well, for Lettice "Letty" Rafferty... I had the character picked out before the doll. All of my planned dolls are based on my characters. I got the mold she is the day after it came out because the face was just perfect for her.
For the second doll I'm getting in the next week or two, I found on the MP (and fell in love.) and I had to match the doll to one of my characters that suited her best.... Avery St. Anne.
Mostly, I plan to pick out the characters before the dolls, but I'm hoping this one was the exception.
I usually have no problems actually naming the characters, though. They basically name themselves. I dream about the name or something..

    9. Moderators I looked through a LOT of post about names but I don't think I saw one that answered this. If I am wrong please delete.

I don't own any bjd's yet but I do collect other dolls and have a naming process.

Character traits come to me first when seeing a doll. Then I search through baby naming sites to find the perfect name.

Or every once in a while (like today) Names and character randomly come to me while just living life and then I run for pen and paper.

I was curious What is your doll naming process? Especially people who come up with these great original names.

    10. I don't know if I really count... I usually know the dolls name before it gets to my house. Occasionally, it's not 100% set, but that's I'm still pretty close to being set on it. My first doll was going to be named Orion, because a) I knew Rion's character from years ago, from the moment I first saw a Super Dollfie Online. I knew that I was going to name my first doll that. Period. The others just sort of happen. Anyway, it's like naming anything you just have to decide try to use it, and then if you don't think it fits try another one. :)

    11. I usually decide it as my mood goes ^_^
Like my first boy,his name was decided WEEKS after I got him XD....
It took me long enough to think of the name
but there's special cases like my Luke ( an order placed 2months ago) and my Lahoo( a head...waiting for his body D:)
has their own name before I even got to see them ^_^! The two of them are going to be here for special reason 8D

    12. Well, the names of my character dolls has been around for many years, It took lots of thinking and getting inspiration from other sources to find a good name. For my other dolls, I just went through baby name sites and eventually settle on one I think would suit them.

    13. Most of mine were characters first, so they had names before they were dolls. In some cases it was a matter of picking names that fit with their culture and nationality, and/or what seemed to fit the characters. Some of them have been around so long (the characters, not the dolls), that I don't even remember why certain names happened.

    14. Because dolls usually take forever to arrive, I make sure I have a name to call them while I am waiting, and then that usually sticks. So I make sure the name suits and that I like it. I look up the meanings too to make sure that it makes sense for their personality.

    15. Sometimes I know what the doll's name will be before I get it, and sometimes I just let inspiration strike. One of my most recent dolls carries the same name as one of my best friends. (To avoid confusion, the doll goes by the full name because my BFF goes by the nickname.) Not that the doll particularly reminds me of her or anything, but it was a name my imagination said the doll didn't mind and actually liked after awhile (I went through a process wherein my girlfriend at the time and I tossed around name ideas and tried calling her by the names and seeing what we thought). Whereas the other doll that came at the same time, I knew what her name would be as soon as I saw her default photo. Then I have character dolls who were meant to be that character so of course the name was already decided.

The only time I ever used baby name lists was for a set of tiny triplets I own...they needed names from the Yoruba language (pretty much all my dolls have very Anglo names) that were unisex, so I had to get a list. Usually baby name lists make my eyes cross, I don't know how you do it!

    16. Naming my girl was interesting. XD I was just sitting in class one day and it sort of just hit me.
I wasn't sure about it for a while and I bounced it around in my head for a while.
After she arrived though, Her personality just kind of picked that one up.

      It was easy.

    17. I think I'll be naming my character dolls once I have everything I need for them (wig, eyes, body/head and perhaps the outfit). As for coming up with the names themselves... I just make them up. Usually by sounding it out and seeing what seems best. Sometimes I'll look in a dictionary and take the middle, start or end of a word, flip it backwards, add something to it or cut it down etc.

    18. The dolls I get are for already created characters so I already have their names ready. The names I pick are something to do with chemistry/science because for some reason I feel I have to keep with that theme after I named Cation, though it can take ages and alot of wikipedia searches to find the right name. ^^

    19. I was thinking long about name of my dollfie.
I thought out many of them, so when my D came, I could choose name.

I think giving your own name is better than leaving firm's one, 'coz it would be more the same names if people leave original name

    20. I usually call the doll by the mold name until she gets in even if I have another name in mind.

ex: Peppermint, my PukiPuki Ante, was supposed to be called Teaberry. Once I did her faceup though, Peppermint worked so much better and it suits her personality!

I don't mind when people keep the mold names but I love seeing what people come up with too!
