1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Dollshe 28M discussion

Jul 25, 2013

    1. Dollshe has already posted...." We will releasing a doll that is in our existing style some time next year. We will continue to diversify our lineup of dolls in terms of age group."

I take that to mean the Saint/Hound style.

Dollshe is trying something new with David, and IMHO setting an even higher bar for details.

    2. I sincerely support the choice of Dollshe company to trying different paths, that's what an artist does, doing over and over again the same style is not something that an artist loves to do, so to me seems quite normal a change.

    3. And that's the best news *I've* read in awhile! :) I hope he does! I'd LOVE to see what you could do with one of these beauties!

    4. Nicely put -- and I absolutely agree. It's a mind-bogglingly beautiful body, and that nose is... I really want that head. But I'm not 100% sold on them together.

But it doesn't matter at this point given all the medical stuff that has to be paid off first.... :)

    5. I think you can because their neck sizes are basically the same.

    6. THIS. So agree.

While I'm a huge fan of Mr. Dollshe's original line up of dolls (most of my crew is Dollshe ;) ), speaking as an artist, I'm pleased to see this new path he is taking with his work. It is vital to the artistic process to continually explore and break new ground with one's creativity.

I really admire both David and Ausley, and hope to someday bring them home.

That said, at the end of the day, the Dollshe company is also very much a business endeavor. It's quite possible that he may again offer his original male line-up (since they have certainly proven to be popular and profitable for the company). As previously mentioned up-thread, it's also been indicated on the Dollshe site that he's planning a new male doll that will be similar to his old style (although perhaps a bit different?). And doubtless he has other interesting new doll creations in mind for the future.

I'm excited and very much looking forward to whatever Mr. Dollshe has in store for us, as I'm sure it will be artistic, beautifully made, and unique, as is always the case with his art.

I salute Mr. Dollshe for his vision, talent, hard work, and dedication! :aheartbea

    7. Madam Mau Mau ... Nutella, I'm thinking, rather than Marmite or Vegemite.... ;-p

Yuan, thanks for posting the measurement comparison chart. This has confirmed some of my suspicions. As to his head size, it seems to be more in proportion with actual human stats, and I was delighted to see that his leg length was shorter -- what's with all of these very long-legged males? When I looked at him, it did seem as if his proportions were a bit more realistic. I wonder if Michelangelo's "David" was an inspiration.

Honestly, I think that there has been a very definite, but obvious evolution here. We went from the slender guys with the tree trunk legs (and before anybody howls, let me say that I have six of those guys, so no moaning, please!). After that, there was a slight hiatus while Mr. Kim worked on the multiple jointed guys. I swore I would not have one of those, but have ended up with a DSAM 32, which does look more realistic in spite of all of the joints.

I applaud Mr. Kim for stretching and taking these risks. That is one earmark of a real artist. It is only reasonable that he would continue to do things that are fulfilling to him. Otherwise, he would probably start to feel like a hack!

Does anybody have any idea when this new resin MAN will be up for sale?

    8. It's not a bit much. Chinese takeout is still food. It's an entirely different type of food. This is an entirely different type of doll. I don't think anyone would deny that. Don't you think David is completely different from the previous dolls? No one said Mr. Kim didn't have the right to shift focus. I said I wish he hadn't discontinued his other dolls to offer only this. I then went on to say I thought it would be better for business if he had offered both. He could have made a wider range of people happy that way. I'd love to see a fresh face in their existing aesthetic, and I know I'm not the only one. I don't see what's wrong with that.

Remember, when a doll is already sculpted and a mold is made, other dolls can be worked on. There's never any reason for Dollshe to feel trapped, because they can sculpt and create whatever they like at any time.

Actually, speaking as an artist, I would rather hear directly when someone was unhappy with my work if I was selling it. That way I could use their feedback in the future. Dollshe needs to hear such feedback, good and bad, and they need to take it all into consideration. Feedback is a very important part of the creative process.

People are free to their own opinions. Having an opinion not shared by others and saying you would have done something differently does not equate to a sense of entitlement. "Entitled" is a word thrown around a bit too much in this hobby. I prefer to keep it mature :).

What would have made me entitled is if I had said "Dollshe should never make a sculpt I don't like." I simply expressed my displeasure at the complete change in aesthetic. That's not entitlement.

Now, speaking as someone with a degree in marketing, I can tell you change is not always good. Are you old enough to remember New Coke? Yeah... they were certain that one was going to go over well. Although I'm certain these new sculpts will not be Dollshe's New Coke, I do wonder if such a drastic change will appeal to enough people for these two sculpts and casting services alone to keep Dollshe afloat. These two are so dramatically different from their existing lineup, and from what people think of when they think "Dollshe." I think this is a valid concern. I see a lot of people in this thread saying "I like David, but I can't/won't buy him for XYZ reason."

Remember, Dollshe is a business, at the end of the day, it comes down to customers buying from them. Mr. Kim may not be business-minded, but the reality is Dollshe needs money to run.

As I said in my first post, I respect that everyone has different tastes. This guy simply is not my cup of tea, but I am very interested in Dollshe as a company, that's why his release and the discontinuation of the other dolls is important to me. I am very anxious to see what happens here.

    9. Dollshe has already said that they plan to release another doll in their "existing style" (I'm assuming the more-slender boys) in the near future. That's working hard to keep as many people as possible happy.

He can't have too many dolls up for sale at the same time, or production gets bogged down, people wait six months or a year, and people start howling for his head. It's a fairly small casting facility (at one point, it was in an apartment! I think they've moved to a larger space now that they're casting for DT, but do keep in mind that Dollshe was very literally a family business at one point -- Mr. Kim's mother and siblings worked in the casting area and addressing packages), and to keep customer service from becoming a problem, he has decided to limit his new doll releases to one doll at a time, since that usually creates a rush of orders.

      I think that's fair, don't you?

Hmmmm -- does anyone have a Light Brown IpleHouse and one of the Dollshe tan shades? Which color is closest?

    10. Wow. I was curious and went on the Q&A to see what "disappointed" wrote.

      Title:The new dolls are hideous.

Please go back to your old style. I can't understand why you would do this.

Just wow. What a rude, ill-mannered person. Full marks to Mr Kim for not just deleting that straight off the board. That wasn't constructive criticism. That was some entitlement b**** saying "I don't like it, therefore it is hideous. Give me what I want". Jeez. It makes me ashamed to be in this hobby, I tell you. I was very pleased to see that a number of people have come in to congratulate him on an incredible piece of work.

This doll is made and will be released. It might not be to your particular taste, but it is an awesome piece of work. And the old style dolls will be back. It is a win win. Can we stop with the whining now?

    11. Here here!:)
I've seen similar (but not as shameful) behaviour on the Soom comment boards - I will never understand that 'entitled' (spoilt) behaviour and I hope Mr. Kim just laughs it off!
Whereas it might be ok to express a dislike for a sculpt, people should be mature enough to be more constructive...and eloquent about it. If you don't like something, fine, no one is forcing you to like or buy it.

    12. OMG! When I saw the pictures of David I about fainted! Whoa! What a powerful sculpt. I love the big hunky realistic men like Idealian72 and IOS80 so he is definitely a "got to have" for me. So beautifully masculine, such perfection from head to toe. His face had me at "hello", and that incredible body, wow! I hope that artist doesn't mess with the guy's junk as someone complained about it in the Q&A. I really admire Dollshe for taking a path so different from their very popular and familiar style. I hope they suceed with this gorgeous man doll and do more in the future. I'm in ... just wonder how long the wait will be between pre-order and delivery?

    13. Hi Ashbet! ^^ Dollshe's light tan shade is still a bit dark in comparison to IH's light brown. It's somewhat in the same tone though so coloring to darken the body or lighten the head would work.

I think David would look quite lovely in a light tan!:D

    14. He's...stunning...:o

I'm actually mildly obsessed with his feet, and I'm not usually a foot person  His face sculpt is divine, although I seem to have a soft spot for quirky face sculpts, (he isn't 'pinheaded' BTW, simply more classically proportioned...we're just not used to that in the BJD world). I wasn't planning on getting any more BJD in the near future, but this boy might have to come home.

I'm a little concerned about posing as the jointing looks a bit limited and I'm not sure I can, literally, handle another big beefy guy who I have to wrestle with to pose properly. Crossing my fingers that his engineering is as good as his aesthetics.

I'm also wondering, (hoping, wishing) if Dollshe will come out with a realistically sculpted lanky boy in the future. Not that I don't appreciate the beefiness of David, (I LOVE how thick his waist looks from the side actually), but it seems like every realistically sculpted BJD is quite brawny. No company has really attempted a hyper-realistic very skinny boy yet and now I'm feeling like Dollshe might be the best candidate for the job lol

    15. Went hunting for resin comparison pictures....just a few to check out....

    16. Mr. Dollshe has once again shown his incredible sculpting abilities, which span from the fantastic to the sublime to the realistic.
Wow, that is one hunk of man.
I will never understand the outrage when an artist does something different. I think it is inspiring. Especially because the work is so refined.
How lucky are we to be able to purchase a sculpture like this?

    17. I am beyond excited! I love this new dollshe sculpt and I am aching to know more about his preorder!

    18. I agree with you wholeheartedly 100% I cannot even begin to believe someone wrote him that, it makes me sick to my stomach and reminds me why I do not like this hobby much anymore. I also am an Artist and if someone wrote me that I think I would sink into depression and perhaps give up and just do stuff for myself only. Yes there is a lot of positive things said but I (not sure anyone else) tends to focus on the negative (I really need to work on this...lol) that was not constructive criticism at all. Also people had PLENTY of time to buy the old DS boys.

I LOVE this doll and even if he may be "beefier" he does not look uber large to me but more streamlined if that makes sense. I personally cannot wait to see more of this boy!

Lula78: I also agree with what you said, thank you ^_^

EDIT: There are more pics up and he is even more magnificent O_O

    19. Dink, these people are in a minority. There are so many great people in this hobby. Let's just be quietly appalled at the entitlement b*****s and go on our way. They are not worth getting upset about. And I get the impression that Mr Kim has a fairly robust ego, so let's not worry too much about him. So many people have expressed their delight at this new project that I am sure he can ignore the very few trolls.

    20. I've sworn I would not buy another doll, nothing caught my attention for one year (except for my struggle to get a tan dia released ^^), and here he comes, this unbelievable piece of art. I would have loved a lighter shade of tan, though...
