Domuya Secret Project Nightmare Discussion

Feb 14, 2010

    1. I personally think the neck will look much better with a mane on it. But I like the overall look :)

    2. i've seen now the new pictures and i was expecting a more "fatty" horse, because with armor it looks well but without he looks very thin, specially the neck and i could not stand it. i think i'll wait the "real scale" horse at this point, i don't care if a doll can sit on it or not, there's always carriage to attach the horse ;D

    3. I would really love to see a centaur thats done well, do you think you have any future plans for bringing out an expansion/another doll that could become a centaur?

I personally would have liked to of seen the horse with a broader, deeper chest and a fatter belly. (although I can understand why you slimmed him down now you've explained)
His neck looks just a little bit too long as well. I feel there is a lot of potential for the horse however, and I'm excited to see what the future brings!

    4. I understand the armor + horse + rider issue.
If the bulk was too high I would have cut it out of the tack before the horse.
I remember when I got my first Barbie horse and he was way thin through the middle....because Barbie couldn't open her legs. It was wierd.
BJDs can't wrap their thighs around a horse but they can open them.
Human legs look very short when on horseback because they open so far between the knees.
I have had my Flexi Perennial and pretty much every BJD I own on the MT horse and had no problem straddling the girth.

See any of these pics for BJDs on the MT:
      http://www.thedollpage.com/photopost/showgallery.php?cat=3534

I also understand the decision to make it toy-like instead of realistic.
I just fall into the group who is lusting for realism.
Horses are really really difficult to animate, draw and sculpt.
They move in a way that defies explaination.
The fluidity, the grace, is so hard to capture in any medium.
It's why we don't see many animated horses in cartoon movies.
"Spirit" came real close to getting it right but they made some interesting choices to meet the animation needs too....eyebrows? on a horse? lol

Again, though I won't be buying one, I applaud the effort.
Eager to see the next try.

(please forgive any typos, my spellcheck has a glitch)

    5. Hum, yeh the horse looks a bit skinny, but it doesn't bother me too bad. I still want him really bad, with or without the armor. Though I REALLY would like a mane.

    6. wow, having an option of the "nightmare" build and a "real" build sounds wonderful, truly something for everybody!

    7. I agree with PamSD, it should be possible to have an Flexi Perrenial to straddle a more bulky horse even though they can't wrap their thighs around them as a real rider.
I think I would appreciate a more bulky horse, if I have any saying in the matter.
Still, love the effort (and look forward to it, and more).
Now I just have to touch-up the Aeslin armour to match (or Marleen's, I have not yet decided on which (or maybe use her scale armour))...

    8. Ordered mine. I think that says it all :)

But I will love to see a more realistic one too... who knows, if I find room for this one, I may find room for a second one too. Most of my dolls personalities are from Medieval Fantasy realms, so they need horses...

    9. I'm wondering about what the future armours would be like? And also what colour horses would you be offering? And when? Will you first wait until all the Nightmares have been shipped before starting to sell the standard companions?

    10. Perhaps I'm pretty pleased by it because I don't actually "know horses". But I think Nightmare looks aesthetically pleasing. Much more appealing - to me - than any other horse I've seen sized for 1/3rd size dolls. The only other horses I've seen that are the correct size either look horribly odd and/or were statically posed (and a bit too small anyway).

If I were around horses a lot or studied them extensively, perhaps I'd be just as irritated by the small things as I am when I watch movies set in the Regency period in England and have to throw my hands up at anachronisms and them doing or saying things that no person of their station and class would do or say.

But I'm very much looking forward to what Domuya does with these horsies and I'm very interested in the possibilities presented by the larger horse type! Oh how I'd love a Clydesdale style horse!

I am with you in a desire for a more realistic horse, probably because I am also a horse owner/fanatic, and readily admit I am extremely picky about horse dolls, sculptures, models etc. I don't know that I would need or expect a BJD horse to be entirely realistic though, but the body dimensions, neck and head scale and proportion are so important in making a horse beautiful and aesthetically pleasing to me. When one of these measurements is off, they can look bizarre.

I do think they nailed the legs and hooves, and the poseability of him looks really good. I may have been imagining things, but did the horse have a slight smiling expression?

    12. Wow... after seeing the action shots, I have to say, I'm pleased with Nightmare's posability. Though he's rather thin with the armor off, I do agree with the speculation that he may look better with a mane. I still don't think ours will ever have any reason to be naked, though...

    13. The first thing I thought when I saw nightmare without the armor was Akhal-Teke XD He so long a skinny. My uncle had a very old Akhal-teke mare named sadra and she actually looked a lot like nightmare

I wonder how much a blank horse from domuya will cost? I've been hoping against hope that a company would make a realistic horse and when I saw that domuya had announced they may make a more realistic one I flipped out :fangirl::D

Edit: I just realized most people probably have not seen the Akhal-Teke breed of horse so here is a pic [IMG]

    14. -T2P-: When you mention it, it does look like a bit like an Akhal-Teke (a very beautyful breed, the closest you come to a fantasy horse in the real world), with that in mind even the size would be correct, and it definitly have the same "dryness".
Gives me some idea on how to blush it, Akhal-Teke have an almost metallic sheen to their coat. :)

    15. I have sent to Domu so many PMs here on DoA, e-mails form Domuya site about Nighmare order and no answer at all :|
Seems they don´t want to sell the horse to me :?

    16. New Photo in black resin added.

    17. In response to -T2P- : Thanks for sharing, I can see the resemblance! I just looked up some more photos of this breed and I can definitely see a similarity with Nightmare. It helps to see them side by side... I'll use your picture for demonstration.

    18. I agree that the Akhal-Teke is a rare and beautiful breed.
Though I doubt this breed was used as refernce, I can see the resemblance to Nightmare.

      BUT

They are not a WAR HORSE by any stretch of the imagination.
To carry the weight of armor a horse must be heavy of bone and muscle.

If I had my wish....this is what I would want for a War Horse.

I think Domuya are close on the leg structure.

    19. LOL yeah I'm pretty sure they didn't mean for it to look like an akhal-teke, Though I think nightmare would be gorgeous decked out like one.

And OMG A FRIESIAN!!!!!! If they made a bjd horse that looked like a Friesian I'd sell a kidney to buy it!!!! :D

    20. I do like Nightmare better after seeing the action shots.
I'd like to see some more though. I'm wondering how the neck bends in the side to side direction, such as looking back over the shoulder.

I'm also curious if there's any plans to put a joint in the ears so you can change the horse's 'expressions'. I'd like to put the ears back in that rearing picture. Maybe that's just me.

Looking good though in a fantasy horse sort of way. :thumbup
