DON'T Call Them "Toys."

Dec 12, 2010

    1. toy
n 1: an artifact designed to be played with

Given this definition of toy I'd say that these dolls really are toys. However if I disregarded the definition I would say that whether or not they are toys depends on the collector.
There are collectors who dress their doll up once and put it on display, that doll isn't meant to be played with and is thus in my opinion not a toy.
However if one regularly changes the clothes of the doll, moves it about, poses it etc then I can't really see how it wouldn't be a toy.

Personally I prefer them being called BJD:s since that separates them from children's toys.

    2. I agree with the above. At least to me they are toys. They are a hobby that is meant to spend my free time relaxing, so I don't mind if people call my dolls toys and it won't make me angry. I find it sort of amusing when some people also get angry when other people call their ABJD a Barbie. I found it so funny, that I named one of my dolls Barbie. She may not be a Barbie, but people can still call her Barbie. ;)

    3. I really don't understand why one would be offended at them being called toys. They ARE toys, no matter how important they are to you. Perhaps "toy" doesn't cover the depth of your feelings for them, but so what? They're still toys. Other people will see them as toys and will call them as such without meaning any harm. Getting mad over such a situation is just silly.

Now, people who are deliberately being mean? The issue there is not calling them toys, it's them being jerks. It doesn't really matter what they say if they're taking a nasty tone.

    4. Nope it does not bother me at all.

    5. The fact that they are called 'toys' doesn't really bother me, because they are toys, but that doesn't make them worthless. BJDs to us are the same as as a favourite Barbie or teddy was (and in some cases still is) to us as children. It's more the tone of voice that would rub me the wrong way.

    6. This. I consider my crew are toys and I don't mind if people call them that also. Very expensive toys. Collectable toys? Haha. I love playing with them.

    7. I know how you feel, Zest... :) So far, no one ever call my dolls as toys, they usually call them as merely dolls or big size barbie, which I don't mind. Some people were asking me & my friends about our doll when we had a doll meet at public place, we're willing to explain what kind of dolls are BJD. ;) They just don't understand, what BJD is. I'll take it easy about it~ ^^

    8. *cries* That annoys me so much O.O

    9. Nope, I too consider them toys (just like many geeky collectables are).

    10. I think that the word "toy" is just one example of something our dolls could be called in a derogatory fashion. It's a good example, because like most things that doll-owners take offense to, the connotation really depends on the tone. So; yes and no. It bothers me if they're referred to in a way that is meant to belittle them or myself. It does not bother me if it's clear that the person labeling them "toys" sees that it's not just a doll that sits on a shelf, that I do indeed "play" with and handle them, and duly comes to the conclusion that such an object MUST be a toy.

    11. I also think they are "grown up toys" and there is nothing wrong with it to call them TOYS in a good way! Ok there are a lot of people who are staring at them and think its a cheap plastic doll........but how should they know better?! If someone is interested i tell him everything about my dolls......and how expensive they are!

    12. Doesn't bother me a jot - they ARE toys.

What's more, they're my toys and I enjoy playing with them.

    13. Honestly, I don't really care what people think. Call them toys if you want, ornaments if you want, figurines if you want... I know what they mean to me, who cares if other people don't see it that way? Besides, not everyone who uses the word toy means it in a bad way. I usually say toys about things life my bf's Warhammer figures or his airbrush or some techy stuff he's just bought, especially when I want to tease him or even more so in situations where he's super excited about getting something new and I find it cute. So I don't mind if he calls my BJDs toys, in a way they are... Toys for adults anyway, in the same way that my video games or my new phone are my toys, lol! Snarky, condescending people are never pleasant to deal with, but it's usually best just to not pay them any mind.

    14. I WISH my mom would see them as toys ... she seems to insist that the dolls that I and my husband have are our children. "No Mom, they are not our children, they are a hobby!":|

    15. It's really boring to me also that they are considered "dolls" like barbie or dolls like that (I never played with dolls even in my childhood.. I preferred guns and machines XD)
They're not Simply Dolls.. they're ART, pure Artistic Masterpiece.. but I don't mind about other's tought and consideration.. I only think this is ingenuos ignorance..
and they don't say this to be bad only because they don't know what really a bjd is..

    16. Exactly this - they're dolls, and dolls are toys. Full stop. There are plenty of toys that are pricey or that are art - none of that effects that they're still toys.

    17. This falls very neatly into the "Please Kiss my Butt" category, however, most adults have toys, be they expensive cars, video games, whatever is not a necessity may be considered either a toy or a luxury.
So? And? The sub category for that is "Now Go and Mind Your Own Business".
I play with them. They are my toys, I love my toys. I don't give a rat's eyeball for anyone else's tone or judgment. They can use the same door they came in to beat it.
And I do think they are art. And they help me express myself artistically. And relieve my stress thereby helping me from wanting to beat the everloving bejaysus out of stupid, nasty or mean people.
And it doesn't make me want to cry, what does though is some one who would be so bereft of tact that they would belittle someone else's hobbies, art, toys, clothes, whatever.

    18. "She who dies with the most toys, wins!"
I love my toys! Playing is how we learn and grow as human beings, and I feel sorry for those who have been tricked into thinking 'grown-ups aren't allowed' to do this. People who are so stuck on being 'mature' just aren't.

Who can read 'the Velveteen Rabbit' without shedding a tear? Toys have the power to touch our hearts and move us to greater heights of creativity and empathy.

In my book, anything that is fun, not entirely necessary, and enriches my life is a 'toy', including my dolls. Also: my iPod, my Cintiq, my awesome collection of graphics software, my studio full of supplies and equipment, heck, even things like my crockpot, funky blue microwave, and expensive set of kitchen knives are 'toys', imho. My father was very clear about his snowmobiles, welders, collection of vintage sewing machines, horses -even the entire farm - they were all 'toys'.

Hooray! for beautiful, expensive, interactive toys. Long may they reign!

    19. That seems like a sort of silly thing to get upset over, imo. They ARE toys. They're not alive, not sentient beings. Sure, they're sculpture, they're art, they're beautiful but ultimately, they are toys. I mean, what are non-doll people supposed to say? "My, that's a lovely resin sculpture there!" That's not how the majority of people will react. They see doll, they say doll, doll = toy. Simple as that. And as Stella said, this does fall into the Kiss My Butt category, ya can't get all angrypants over this since it's going to happen again and again.

    20. Yeah they definately are toys by definition, any ways if someone wants to think of them as kids thing let them. My whole family (and some of my freinds) say thinkgs like 'what do you want with dolls are your age?'' and ''its wierd, i dont get it'' and ''theyre all just made in a mass produced factory somewhere like barbies''. I just ignore it, I put it down to ignorance on their part. Even if they dont want to listen to me and dig their heals in, theres no point in getting het up and upset about it. It wont change anyones perception of your resin. As long as you love them who else matters? :)
