Don't trust a doll over 30?

  1. If it fit the character and was a good sculpt, sure!

  2. No way- I like the fact that my dolls won't age.

    1. OMG... Over 30 is "old"? :o

    2. wow I must be ancient...:| {going on 48}

    3. Wow that's quite a statement- many of Hollywoods "beautiful people" are in their 40's..not teens and 20's.....is that why alot of the Minimees being made are of people in the 30's-40's? Johnny Depp{47}, Robert Downey Jr {44}, Cate Blanchet{?}, Angelina Jolie{?}, and others? I don't see many doll made of teenagers from movies or tv..

      I think they're quite popular ...and that could be why some of the companies are coming out with more mature sculpts...Unireal, Iplehouse and others, people want older sculpts...I have a Jessica and to me she could pass for late 20's, or mid 40's depending on how her faceup/look is done.... I like my dolls older looking..not teens or kids {with the exception of my Seola7}

and btw.. not all teens/20 somethings are pretty

    4. Yeah, I agree with the rest -- some BJDs already do look 30. There are lots of sculpts who've lost their babyfat & have some gravity to their features: those gaunt Dollmore Model girls like Bella, most of the really-realistic Unidoll girls, the Unidoll men, the Iplehouse men, and Minimees... among others. (Most recently, check out that smoldery new Volks SD17 Hijikata! He's definitely a grownup. <3 If you thought Volks only made anime babyfaces, check again.)

But you know, some of those Minimees look pretty craggy, in the way-over-30-zone already... and CustomHouse Mina always looked like she was 55 to me... and need I mention Unidoll Ark?

With alla that said, none of my own doll-characters are over 27, because I like to look at young men! Besides: I'm busy living the over-30 life myself, so I don't need to give it to them. ^~ However, I would love to SEE a doll who's sculpted to be 45 or older, for the artistic thrill of it.

Seriously? You really actually said out loud that age 30 is automatic ugliness/ nonprettiness? Wow. You might want to seek some help with your tactfulness issues now, before your bones finish hardening.... Although it is true that you'll learn tact as you get older, you clearly need a jump-start.

    5. I would love to have a doll that looked like a wizened old woman! Seriously, I would be willing to pay above average prices for such a sculpt. :sumomo:

    6. I have a character whom I love dearly; in the way I tend to think of him, he is somewhere between 48 and 54. All the male dolls I look at undergo the same first question before any other: Is there something in this sculpt that reminds me of this particular character? If there is (and there rarely is), I am always inclined to look upon that sculpt with more difference. Even so, the over-whelming youthfulness of even the large 'elder' dolls has impressed upon me that I shall either have to settle for a younger version of this gentleman (to which I doubt he would object), or try to age him myself with mods and an appropriate face-up.

So, in short: egads! I would be very happy to see older looking dolls, both male and female.

    7. I think that would definitely be interesting to see! I mean, I've seen elf dolls that are supposed to be hundreds of years old and all the wrinkles on their faces are what give them character and make them so interesting! I mean most of the time wizards are portrayed as old, wrinkled and gray, I think for scifi characters especially it would be a neat/good idea!

    8. I see the merit in having highly stylized dolls - we are constantly plagued by reality in our daily lives - why have it shelled in doll form as well, right? They're meant to embody our fantasies. I understand that viewpoint, share it in some points, and truly respect it.

However, personally, I absolutely LOVE realism. I LOVE the new, incredibly sculpted male bodies that have been coming out! My Luo is just fantastic, and I can't wait for Soom to release their Idealian! (Fingerprints, wow!). Personally, I love the aesthetic of craggy, roughly handsome older men (though, of course, there are the smooth-shaven, yet charmingly handsome older men as well - all good!). While I appreciate the immaturity and youth of most of the BJDs on the market (as I own many dolls in that style!), I absolutely adore the more mature sculpts. Veins and rippling abs are good things in my book!

I also love the more mature women sculpts. For instance - the Iplehouse EID female line? Wow! Curvaceous, sensual, and beautiful. Especially Jessica. They're women, not the willowy, wide-eyed innocents that populate the hobby (though I must admit I am guilty of owning willowy, wide-eyed innocent female dolls, haha).

I'd also love to see actual "older" dolls, such as 70s and up. I'm very attracted to odd or interesting dolls. (I've always wanted a LW Mihael, and notdolllab is so interesting) I've seen well-done "fairy" sculptures and elves, with tiny, close-set eyes and large, hooked noses, and such absolutely delightful faces. I think if it was particularly unique and well-done, I would most likely bring one home. I love beautiful dolls, but I love well-done, particularly unique ones as well!

    9. I have a hopeless crush on Auron, from FFX, and the whole ronin trope upon which his character is based. I find those guys more interesting when they aren't babyfaces. (Sanjuro, Mifune's legendary wandering samurai, has a name that means "thirtyish," but as he himself says, he's closer to forty.) I'm praying that someone, Rainman perhaps, will sculpt a workable ronin character. Minimees can definitely do older characters, but I would like to see something a few clicks back towards the stylized, but nevertheless clearly older.

My wildest, dearest, craziest dream? A sculpt that evoked Callum Keith Rennie, on a lovely, gangly Graffiti or SD17 body.

    10. I'm into realism, too. Cute is...cute but I love the ingenuity and skill involved in sculpting realistic dolls.
I'd love to see more diversity among dolls. I understand the companies are wary of taking risks because theres such an established and popular theme of youth and unnatural proportions but the poll in this thread is encouraging.
Still I think Minimees will be our only option for a while, if we want really unusual dolls.

I certainly wouldnt mind owning a 'silver fox' of a doll! ;)
I think some of th more adult female dolls, such as the EIDs and Dollmore's model dolls can be made to look quite mature with the right faceups.

Now if I could just get a realistically proportoned body...sigh.

    11. I would love to see older dolls, both those characters look really cool. :3
But I would never buy one for myself. I just can't relate to older characters, I still see them as... like.. moms and dads or something. ^^; It would be hard to play with them. I want dolls that look more like equals to me. D: (This is why I never liked Barbies when I was a kid. And they STILL look too mature.)
*is about a decade older than I sound in this post* OTL...

    12. I have a Unidoll Ark, and he is definately on the other side of the big three oh! ;)

I do like dolls that look older, just as I like dolls that look much younger than others. I like variety, and it would be nice to see some more dolls that are styled to look older. I don't think there would be much of a market for them, which might be why more companies don't make dolls that are older, but it would be nice to maybe see some limiteds or something that have a bit more age to their features. :)

    13. Wanted to link this to you. Not only is this issue of this magazine considered by many people (not all mind you as it is not my personal ideal of beauty, but since you stated your opinion is close to general opinion, I wanted to post something that I felt more accurately reflected general/popular opinion in our culture) to reflect American opinion, it is also a list that in the past has featured many people of whom minimees have been made from. Many of them are in their late 20's and many are over thirty. I would say the majority are closer to 30 than to 16 (though there are many young teens and early twenty somethings, several are over the 23 mark, hence closer to 30). Many are well over 30 in fact. Just some food for thought. I also think it is useful to the overall discussion in this thread. ;)

    14. My girl now, as well as all my future doll plans, are character-based, and seeing as I don't have any characters above the age of thirty or so in my stories at the moment, I wouldn't buy an older-looking doll, for the simple reason that I wouldn't be able to flesh out any character with him/her. Would I love to see some older-looking dolls anyway? Heck yes! I don't see why so many people are afraid of growing older--age is beautiful and graceful, and I think embracing it in the BJD hobby could be a great thing.

(That said, I don't know how well the physical signs of age would translate to resin, which could be the reason we don't see many dolls like that now. Resin is just so stiff, and aging flesh is just so loose, and that's what gives it the effect of being, well, aged, so.)

    15. I think it could definitely be done. :3 When an old person stands perfectly still their skin might just as well be hard as soft. A good sculptor could create the right shapes and a good faceup artist could create the right texture.

    16. Hmm.. All "omg *insert age number here* and over is old and unattractive!" comments aside, I prefer younger-looking dolls simply because I myself am young (21), and I would feel very uncomfortable playing with a doll that was "older" than I am.
I do have characters and worlds in which all ages obviously exist, but I generally make the main focus characters around my own age (because as it goes, "you write/draw best what you know") and I don't have the financial means to buy every one of my characters in the story a doll!

    17. I try to buy adult looking dolls, but invariably they tend to look in their early 20's I would welcome older looking dolls.

    18. If a company even made one over 30 doll it doesn not have to be that every doll they make is this way.
I am not a fan of mini-me's I've only seen 2 that I like but I think it has to do with not having a proper body for them they always look so odd to me.

Ark is a fabulous BJD I don't own him but I am always looking at pics of him.

<" I think as I get older I have less interest in kids so I usually don't buy kid and teen dolls. I like beauty and I like realistic.
wouldn't buy an older-looking doll, for the simple reason that I wouldn't be able to flesh out any character with him/her">

When you gain experience with wrinkles it becomes less difficult to work with them. There is great beauty in age I have met so many gorgeous silver haired ladies I especially love the older ladies that wear lip stick and have a smile in their eyes. One lady
in my art class had the most beautiful long silver hair caught up in a silver clasp I can only hope my hair turns out that way when I am older.

    19. Absolutely not...I'm over 30..!!!!!!!!!!!!!
      LOL

    20. I'm playing with my Luts Winter event head right now to see how old I can make him look, first just by faceup, and then I'll probably mod him too.
I love to create mature characters with less of the ...emotional seesawing and more complexity of experience motivating their actions and choices. I also enjoy drawing the lines and planes of mature adult faces. Being that way in my writing and my art has led naturally to many of my very favorite OC's being more mature, 40 years or older.
