Ever been disappointed? Even a little?

Sep 16, 2008

    1. I research all my dolls VERY thoroughly first. If I'm gonna spend that amount of money, I wanna make sure I get it right. So, no, no disappointments here (yet?).

    2. While I was waiting for my first doll to arrive, I did end up being a little saddened that I had found a better (?) looking doll.

Of course, when she finally arrived and I opened up that box, that bit of disappointment instantly vanished, and I was very happy. ^^

    3. Oh no! I really, really love Emma (Kid delf Aru girl). I think she is absolutely perfect, I love everything about her... she is what I allways wanted and more!!!
What disapointed me a little bit was her wig. It is from Luts and I think it is a nice wig, but it just isnยดt the rigth one for her. I donยดt know why, it is a lovely wig, but it isnยดt for her. n_n

    4. Well I like the larger models, so I'm not sure I would have the same problem as you, being too small and whatnot, but he is going to be very expensive, nearly $700 with shipping. No one has really said anything about the price to me, they know I have been wanting one for a while and my parents figure if I save up on my own I have time to think about it (They're usually good about money with me)

I would be very disappointed if it was broken when I got it though, I would most likely find some legal thing in it and get my money back or try and get it fixed(Even though I will probably fail) I have already made lots of stuff for him, crobi dolls has nice detailed measurements of the one I want to get :)

    5. this thread is so timely! I just received one of my dolls last night. I purchased a Narsha after many weeks of research (and cost factors...now I get it.) I am hugely disappointed in this doll! She's nothing I imagined, she's strung so tightly it's bizarre, her faceup is bad, one eyebrow has a slit in it, her body blushing is stupid, and she doesn't even feel good. She's too light weight, and her sanding must have been done very quickly.
I don't know what to do. I might email dollmore and ask what I can do but otherwise, i think i will try and sell her somehow. but who's going to buy her with a bad faceup?
and the hassle of trying to send her back seems impossible and way too much work.
      she's just a huge disappointment.
I bought my first bjd, yomo, on Ebay and loved her immediately.
this was not the case and I spent a LOT more money on this one!

    6. and I also just realized that one of Narsha's eyes has a crack in it too!
sorry, I feel like I'm ranting here and I've just sent Dollmore an email/post so I hope they can give me some suggestions.
it does help to read other people's stories about disappointing dolls too. I just usually don't spend so much money on something and then end up being disappointed to boot!

    7. yes always especially when there is a limited doll that u want and it gets sold out

    8. Don't worry about the face-up, marysam - there are plenty of talented face-up artists here on DoA you could send her to and who could fix up the sanding and blushing. If you really can't bond with her, a bad face-up is unlikely to put off prospective buyers, many of whom would wipe it and either redo her themselves or send her off for a face-up.

    9. I was definitely very dissapointed to find my dream doll on custom house completely sold out and limited to only 10 world wide. It was probably long gone before I ever even went looking for dolls. It was the first doll where I was ready to through in the towel and just buy it right there and then. I have more than enough funds to buy a BJD I just like to be overly cautious. I think waiting out the time just to get to the market is a good test for me to see if I even stay interested. No sense in tossing $800 away on something that I may lose interest in and not look at after a few months

I doubt I will ever find that particular doll for sale because of its limited production.

    10. When I first received my Soulkid Ahee - I was devastated - I paid for a faceup, but she came with one eyelash missing. I had waited several months for her arrival. Since I'm not good at things like that - I put her back in her box where she sat for months until I went to IDEX and a friend put new eyelashes on her. I'm happy with her now!

    11. I was dissapointed by my first boy doll: The Orientdoll IL.

The pictures were PERFECT! I was so happy I'd found a boy doll I liked. Most every MSD boy I saw was way to girly, not as cute. I quickly ordered him, and I was so excited until the day the package arrived... Don't get me wrong, he's a goreous sculpt, but his proportions were too anatomically correct. He was as tall as my girls, but his hands, feet, and head were two sizes too small!!

It made me cry inside.. T__________T

    12. i got my first BJD boy (2 weeks ago). I think most people would be very upset on my place: the resin color on some parts didn't match the resin on the other parts, he is chipped at some places, i found some dirty/stain marks on his body, he is floppy, his face-up (company made) is horrible, he poses badly...And he supposed to be a "brad new doll", he wasn't even secondhand! When i paid for him i made sure that the eyes would be included, i also paid for the wig.....just to find out in the end that i recieved neither....

BUT I love him to pices (this eyeless hairless creature)! I don't know why but i can't emagine myself now without him around ^^. I am so attached to him it scares me a lot ^^; We do everything together...we even sleep together ^^. And i never had a moment of regret buying him :P

    13. This is the reason I'm scared on buying my first BJD, the fact of it not being how it was when I fell in love with it. This and the money fact is the only thing holding me back from getting my doll.

    14. In the months of owning Adelheid, I've grown to love the fact that Souldoll sculpts have so much personality. Even the slightest difference in the angle of the face changes their expression by a great deal.

When I got Adelheid, a Soulkid Katie.A I didn't like this as much. She looked so different from the pictures on the website. I bought her pretty soon after her release and only one person had this model. She sold her soon after that, so there were only 3-4 owner pictures.

However, I eventually found that from some angles, she does look like the pictures and others, not at all. I started to love the range of expression and difference in the face and I've no regrets at all with choosing her.

    15. I was a little worried I had made a mistake when my first doll arrived. He looked kind of silly with no clothes or wig. I thought to myself that I just wasted a LOT of money on a doll I wouldn't care for. But after he got his wig, he just looked so perfect as the character I bought him for.

Also, I had no idea what resin was like. I thought it would be more porcelain-like than plastic. But I now like the material because I find it more durable. Since I now drag my doll everywhere, it's good he can endure the travels.

    16. oh god, yes..
I got my second doll (1st boy!) and when I opened the box, I thought it was the wrong one! XD
He looked like a mold that I really hated on the site I got him from. But when I got him completely out of the box and compared him to the site's photos, it was ok XD

I really hated his default faceup too. It looked more orangey yellow than in the official pics.. Luckily I've started developing his character and after loads of failed watercolour pencil faceup bungles, I found some pastels and made him PERFECT~
He looks like the doll I wanted, and I'd do it all again if I had to! (but maybe buy him without a faceup.. would've been cheaper.. I shall do that from now on XDDD)

    17. It's always a bit scary getting a doll, first one or not. Even if you've seen them in RL or not... When it's YOURS it's always a fear that for some reason or other you won't bond--or it just won't be as good as you hope or expect.

This was more a case with me with my first, since it was such a BIG deal (lots of worries and then problems with getting the wrong doll at first). I was totally freaked out by the time he arrived. I wanted the perfect doll--the doll that I would be happy with even if I never had another doll. But I'd never seen another BJD before I got mine, and was worried--nothing was quite as expected, since I'd never seen one before!

Anyway, it took a bit for me to bond. But by the time I'd tinkered a bit with the faceup and got the right eyes and a decent wig and some decent clothes... and took the right kind of photos... Well, by then I'd fallen in love as I thought I would, and he's still a favorite!

So now I know to allow a bit of time and tinkering before I despair of falling in love with a doll that I was sure I'd love. And so far it's worked out pretty well.

    18. Ah, a little. When & first arrived, I inspected him top to bottom and took note of every seam and imperfection. I loved him as a whole immediately, but was disappointed with a few minor flaws. One thing that bugged me forever and a half was the fact that one of his hands arrived shiny. I wanted to sand it to make it as matte as the rest of him, but the more I hesitated I found that I liked it better and better.

      I read more and more that some batches of resin turn out shinier than others. Before I resolved to order him, I read that handling them very often, like continuous touching of hands or arms, tend to shine the resin, and I resolved to not touch him too much to keep his skin matte as possible. However, while I was vastly disappointed he was not flawless, in time I grew very grateful that his hand came shiny because it seems that particular hand of his seems to have become a prime tool of expression for him and requires a fair amount of handling for posing. His flaw became a blessing because if it weren't for the fact that his hand was already shiny, I wouldn't have ever handled him as much as I do now because I am very weary about the little, but exposed areas of resin on him and I do want to keep him as pristine as possible. XD;

    19. Why yes, yes I have. I purchased an MSD sized doll that I loved all photos I found of her and according to the research I had done all other owners of the sculpt were very happy with. However as soon as I received her and pulled her out of her box... I was disillusioned. Her quality was nowhere near what I was used to, and I disliked her proportions. I tried very hard to bond, but she went back in her box at the end of the week and was sold within the month.

    20. I was a little disappointed with the face-up on my B&G Hera because the lower lashes looks way too thick and it really didn't look much like the reference picture I sent for the ''custom'' face-up. Even though the picture was of a different doll (same company), I thought that they could still make it look similar by keeping the same colour scheme, less lashes, arched brows, lines, etc. Then I found an owners picture of the same doll here on DOA and it looked practically the same:o. Only slightly different because my dolls eyebrows were a bit more arched. Overall I'm still pleased with the doll, I just don't focus on the eyelashes.
