Ever Been Spooked (Directly or Indirectly) By Your Doll?

Mar 1, 2007

    1. Well, maybe not spooked, but something close to it anyway^^ It happened at our annual Matsuri (2007). I was walking around with Issachar, just completely enjoying the feeling of having him with me. At the time, he'd only been here for a few months. About the time I get into one of the main squares, I notice this guy staring at me and Issachar. Not the 'What in the WORLD is that' kind of stare, but more of an intent-bordering-on-terrified. Much to my surprise he came over. The first thing he said was, "Is that a faerie?"

Now, it took me a bit to figure out if he was serious. After thirty seconds of the most intense awkwardness I've ever felt, I smiled warily and said no. He relaxed, explaining that he was a photographer (I think it was for a journal) and had recently been working on a case that involved him getting involved in some old-style crime stuff. He also had recently been to Europe and said Issachar reminded him of somethings he saw over there^^

We continued talking in the square until he eventually asked if he could hold Issachar. He stood there for a long time, just cradling my doll much as I would myself. It seemed that as I watched, the man stood up straighter, like someone gave him a really great back massage and a good night's rest XD He handed Issachar back, saying something about him having great energy, very positive or something along those lines. We parted, but all I could think about were his words.

Doll possession is one thing I was worried about when I bought Issachar, so I prayed over him when he got here^^; But for the first few months I tried to push all of my love into him, if that makes sense at all lol. If what the guy at Matsuri said was true, I guess it worked^^ Other than that instance though, nothing too strange.

    2. I can now necro this thread because my Chiwoo (my sweetest-faced doll, too!) has officially spooked me.

When I left this morning, his wig was nicely on his head.

When I came home, his wig was pushed back on his head so it was halfway falling off. And he seems to be looking up more than he was when I left.

I think either someone's messing with me ... but I should have been the last one out, first one home.

Maybe the elastic was too tight and caused it to wiggle off his head over time?

    3. Has anyone ever experience any kind of doll phenomenon? I've only experience the normal ones, that is, my dolls' expressions that change every now and then.
One of my students just told me that her friend's BJD grew by 4cm. That's what she claims. And they both saw the doll yawning from the corner of their eyes. She's so freaked out by the whole incident.
I'm not very sure what to make out of the whole thing. I've heard of stories of doll's hair growing and glastic eyes retracting when a torch is shined onto it (probably some kind of illusion). Dolls growing and yawning...that's a first.
      Any views anyone?

    4. Well, I saw My twin-b Ailill blink when my eyes were focusing on something else near his head. I saw My Ten.Bee-A Jill blink through my camera lens, no "trick of the eye" there, I actually saw her eyes move. My Ten.Too Jack Fixed his wig when it got all frizzy after being caught on something. His wig hand hairs strewn about and I left the room for a minute and came back and it was all fixed and combed down (no one in the house at the time). I find it pretty funny that all of them have moved with me around.
And their eyes always seem like their following, but that might be a trick of the light because some paintings do that.

    5. odd. very odd. yet when i don't have my eye focused on my little minions i kinda see then blink. kinda, not fully, because i watch them to much. i wonder who else will post on here.

    6. My newest boy's eyes seem to follow you around the room, moreso than my others tend to do. It sort of has my mother freaked out. She's always saying, "He's watching me!" :D

    7. When my cat, Bertie Woo, was a tiny kitten he was very clingy. The first night he was home he slept in my hair on my pillow. I got up in the morning and needed to shower so I left him shut in the bedroom, where my doll sits in a SD chair.

Coming back into the bedroom, I found Bertie Woo sitting in the doll's lap with his front paws around her neck....sleeping.

But the curious thing is, her arms were folded gently around his little kitten middle holding him securely.

And there was no other person in the house at the time.

    8. I think the blinking thing might be an aftereffect of them being so realistic- we imagine them blinking or we see them do it when we're not really looking because they're people to us, and people blink.
But Vitya's not so active these days. He's moved places a few times, pretty eerily, but I think that was my five year old brother... but very carefully, it would seem.

    9. Awww that's so cute!

Sometime it seems my dolls move on their own. I'll leave the room and come back and they'll have moved meanwhile no ones in the house, I don't have pets either.

I remember once I went to get a drink, and I heard this thud. Tak had some how managed to get off the chair and I turned around and found him on the floor behind me in the door way of the kitchen. And he wasn't sitting in a tiny doll chair, it was one of my massive kitchen table chairs I pulled up next to the computer so he could watch cartoons with me o.o It was cute but spooky.

    10. I'd say they either imagined it or they're trying to wind you up.
Seriously, they're expensive and ever so pretty lumps of plastic. I know some try to justify the cost by pretending their dolls have souls and such but c'mon... they're just dolls, dolls that are the same as hundreds of others of the same sculpt, they wheren't made my magical fairies in some far off land but rather skilled artists in Korea/China/Japan.
Perhaps that's overly harsh of me but do people actually believe their dolls blink/yawn/grow/whatever? :|

    11. Yeah, I'm sort of with River here ... just to pull out my sceptical glasses and push them up my nose: they cannot move. They really can't. It honestly makes me scratch my head when people are scared of my doll (or any doll, really) because they think she's going to move. Or she's posessed. Or whatever. I mean, really.

As a genuine question: why do people think this? Is it due to popular horror stories of dolls? The history of the figurine in different cultures? etc.

    12. Maybe it's more like the X-files theme: 'I want to believe' :) ;)

    13. I think that, especially in the Fall of the year, people have indulged in stories of magic and wonder and even scaryosity!

      We can't explain everything...and maybe that's a good thing.

    14. I think there's wanting to believe and then there's not knowing where to draw the line between flights of fancy and reality. Some people in the hobby seem to really have issues with the later =/

    15. not me personally but my aunt got really freaked out, she was holding my DOD shall standing on her lap, and looked away for a moment and as she was starting to look back at my shall, the doll lunged forward head first into my aunt, hahaha it was so funny she screamed and almost tossed my doll in the air. my shall had a bad habbit of just bending at the waste randomly. Ive sinced fixed it.

    16. Y'know, I've only been into BJDs for about 6 months, and I've already seen some of that. It kind of kept me from wanting to join in any of the community aspects of the hobby. Someone pointed me to DOA, and y'all seem to be pretty normal, but I've encountered some really frightening folk in other forums. Of course, that's SO not exclusive to doll collecting...check out a cloth diapering forum sometime. There are women who pay $400+ for 1 diaper. 0.o

    17. My girl is very sweet tempered, and other then "getting mad" at me when I deserve it doesn't do anything. However last night I did get a shock.
Part of my girls personality, is she's afraid of the dark. Her room is the closet in the guest room (which is where I sleep when we don't have company). So I'd already put her to bed, and closed the door. Then proceeded to read a book in bed. I'm on my side, back to the closet when I notice the closet smell (our house is new, and as the guest room closet, it still smells like a "new house" because it's never been aired out) I roll over and the door is wide open. It took me a good minute to come up with why the heck the door was now wide open and against the wall when I had closed it.
I have determined that the window being open (because I love fresh air) combined with not securely closing the door caused it to swing open. But that was still kinda creepy. I guess she really doesn't like the dark, hehe.

    18. OMG :o
you too? I thought I was the only one with that fear!

    19. hahaha I'm such a dork! This morning when my alarm went off I was still half asleep and dreaming when my eyes popped open. They instantly fell on Silmay and she scared the crap outta me! I squeeked and lept up (fully awake now) and then stared at her innocently sitting on my dresser. Palm to forehead, I flopped back down on my bed. :sweat

    20. My Rooneys eyes seem to be to big at times, so even when shes looking down or away from me, it seems like shes glaring at me... judging me... It sometimes makes me nervous.
