Ever Been Spooked (Directly or Indirectly) By Your Doll?

Mar 1, 2007

1. Okay, first of all I have to say, NEVER take fears lightly. Even if it's not a fullout phobia, people can get really messed up.
Anyhoo, I love the Apple dolls, but I can imagine alot of people finding them scary. I really really dislike Living dead dolls, simply because they have a baby body, and zombie/dead babies just freak me out.

Like Catdancer said, alot of people fear the human likeness because of stories told or believes or anything. Dolls are usually portrayed as the shell of evil, simply because they resemble humans most of the time, and well, the thought of a tiny person that's pure evil is just scary to most people. With BJD's it's so that they're of course even more human-esque because of the articulation.
It just has alot to do with heritage and how a person was raised, but I respect that, because I'd want others to respect my believes aswell.
My boyfriend really doesn't like dolls, because they stare at him (the usual argument), so I don't play with them when he's around and don't do anything to make him uncomfortable. I know what it's like to live with a severe phobia so I try my best not to let others experiance that same feeling.

2. Just a friendly Mod reminder - if you're discussing haunted dolls and want to use a picture, make sure the pictures aren't too large and please remember that any pictures of off-topic dolls must also contain on-topic dolls :)

I have a friend who is very scared of dolls, for years she suffered having some large porcelain dolls in her bedroom because her beloved grandmother kept buying her these beautiful dolls as gifts. My friend is alright with dolls if she knows that they're going to be there, but surprising her with the presence of a doll freaks her out because it's as if the doll has sneaked up on her in order to frighten her. In my friend's case it is the humanity that freaks her out, she doesn't like my more realistic dolls, but she's fine with my Dollfie Dream because DDs look like big action figures rather than miniature human beings.

3. Yes! Sometimes when I stare at my girl (I am just so taken by her beauty <3) I expect to see a movement of her eyes, a twitch of a lip, an inhale or exhale. I can understand why some people think BJDs are creepy! My girl creeps me! The sculpt is done in such a way that when you stand above her she appears to have a bit of a pout, but when you look up at her she appears to be smiling. I am still very new to BJDs, is this a normal feature? And I am 100% aware that it is my over active imagination, but she always seems to have a new brightness to her eyes when I pick her up and move her around. :)

4. My doll Loki has scared the heck out of me a few times, I love him to death but, you know? He's a quirky one...but there's a reason I cover him up when I go to bed at night.
A little while after I first got him I had set him on my dresser, looking straight at the wall. I went and saw a few friends, did some chores, by the end of the night I'd gotten ready for bed, went into my room, got comfy. Then I looked up at the dresser, and Loki's head had gone from looking straight across the room at the wall, to looking down, at me in bed. It gave me the chills definately. I know that his head has a tendency to snap down sometimes, but it was too late for logic...I was spooked.
I swear that he has moods too, when I neglect him for too long he tends to look...angry, pissed off. But when I play with him, move him around, change his clothes, take care of him, he tends to look happier. I know that the angle I have him at depends on how he looks...but other people have noticed it too, not just me.
Also once, he'd fallen over while I was taken a picture, he wasn't hurt, but when I picked him up, he twisted a funny way so that his little resin hand struck me across the cheek, and for the rest of the day he wouldn't stand for me.
He does weird little movements on his own that always seem to suit the mood of what's going on...like I said, I love him dearly. But he scares me sometimes. XD

5. Well this one time I was like half asleep and I could of swore Sai had moved. It really creeped me out xD But like I said I was half asleep so I prolly just imagined it xD
And for some reason my boyfriend is terrified of him, lol he even refuses to come into my room (Where I keep Sai) inless I put him in another room xD I'd hate to imagine how he'd feel If I forced him to go to a BJD meet-up xD

6. If had those moments with my new boy! I brought him to work for the first time, then momentarily forgot that he was behind the counter. At a glance I saw him sitting in my chair and thought "Where'd that strange guy come from?!?!" without even realizing that he's only 2 feet tall... the prehistoric neanderthal part of my brain registered UNEXPECTED PERSON! and panicked. Sad, but true.

One other thing is that my boy has strangely intense eyes that follow you when you move. Not mechanically, but I've said to people, "just move backand forth or up and down and the pupils of his eyes will follow you!" and they totally do. He gets a look like he wants to melt you brain sometimes.

7. My doll scared me by being somewhere safe. xD I keep her on the dresser next to my bed since I know that she won't get trampled or anything (we have a dog that sneaks into my room and runs around like she's insane) and I'm used to looking over in the morning and seeing her there. One night I couldn't find her PJs so I just put her back in her box naked and decided that I'd look for them the next day. When I woke up, I looked over to say good morning to her but she wasn't there! I freaked out, forgetting that she was in her box on the other side of the room. It took me about 5 minutes to remember where she was. This tends to happen to me a lot. I hide things so well that I forget where I put them. ^-^;

Like everyone, I get scared when my doll is about to fall or falls. Or when people are rough with her.

8. Yes, right now ._.
I like to watch TV with Zowie sitting somewhere next to me and that's also what we're doing right now. Like, 3 minutes ago, I put him on a little pillow with his head turned to face the TV (silly habit, I always have to do that) and when I glanced over to him moments later, he was looking at me. Which is like .. the opposite direction. There's no way I could have touched and moved him without noticing or anything, so it has to be the elastic tension that made him do that or .. I don't know. But I really freaked for a second because he's never done anything like that before. I can leave him standing somewhere for hours and not even the slightest bit of movement o.o

9. Yeah. x.x For the past year I've only had a doll with pupil-less eyes, so even when he's facing my direction there's no direct gaze. The girl I just got has pupils, and high-quality eyes so they seem to follow you.
Creepin' me out just a lil' bit.

10. I have over 2000 dolls and none of them have ever creeped me out, even the 100+ years old ones. I did have a doll that was given to me by my cousin. She found her while volunteering after Hurricane Katrina. She said she was just sitting on a bench. She was an old plastic baby doll and she had been water damaged. Someone had made her a feed sack dress and rooted her hair with yarn and braided it. She creeped out everyone in the house (except me) She bothered everyone so much I put her away and said I got rid of her. I did have a bad scare when my Doll-Love Brian took a dive off the couch. Nearly killed myself saving him.

11. I removed the wig and took the eyes out of my doll for cleaning and... I admit it looked somewhat odd, the blank hollow stare (reminded me of the movie Hollow Man *shudder*) I just don't really like it when they're bald... >_>"
I know they're not real though, so they don't bother me... plus I always keep them in their boxes at night, so they can't get me... XP

12. Yoru spooks me sometimes I guess...particularly when I turn around to look at him and his expression looks...different, somehow? Sometimes he looks annoyed with me, other times amused...:?

I know his face can't ACTUALLY change, but it doesn't help. :sweat

13. Yeah, first time I saw him I feel like 'wow, he's so beautiful' but after that for one or two days, I sometime feel like he's watching me and have a feeling. Sometime I felt so scared like 'Will he walks around the house??'

But it's just my imagination though, that makes me scared, lolz~

14. :sweat Yes. Last night, I was kind of worried to go to sleep with my doll sitting on my night stand in the open. It's my first doll, and I still harbor fear over a scary doll incident I had as a kid.

15. I took my girl's wig and ears off once (she has removable rabbit ears) and didn't have time to replace them. The next time I saw her she kinda freaked me out. She has no human ears, so seeing her bald and ear-less with her large eyes reminded me of an alien...

16. Only I think twice has Kyoharu ever scared me. It's always happened when he's sitting next to me while I'm the comp. I'll look over at him and during these two times his eyes just looked insanely real and like he WAS actually WATCHING me. I had that feeling of fear wash over me. So--I scooped him up and held him. Eventually the feeling went away. lol

17. I always get spooked when they 'stare' at me. -____-;; But then again, I can't even have photos in magazines staring at me or anything, so this might not count. > .>

18. I startled myself the other day when I had my boy on the back of the couch. The cats usually sit there and it's just habit to pet them. All I saw was the black fur of his wig and so I reached down to pet and didn't realize it wasn't a cat til my hand hit resin.

I don't get unnerved by my dolls being moved when I'm out of the room... it's been happening since I got my first one years ago, I know my apartment is haunted...

19. OK. Definitely not a thread you should be reading middle of the night. I had to turn my lamp on a few times. As a slow reader I post before I read it to end.

My dolls frightened me directly only with their good tries at falling face first off table. I’d thought I’ll never post here because my sweethearts have no chance to spook me. Wrong. Today, not an hour ago, one managed. Let me tell the story from its start:
My two roommates use every second I’m not at home to repose/hide/move my dolls. First few times they almost got me, but I always find them immediately. Today I come home from work and of curse, case empty. I found them all posed around the living room, only this time I failed finding Armand .
I shrugged, knowing 7 pm. we sit all (dolls, humans and cat) on the couch watching some dumb sitcom that comes before the news. I was sure they’ll be careful not to forget Amy (they handle him with respect to the point it’s scary, really).
I had only about an hour of daylight to finally repair winter damage on my little rock garden below the living room window. My friend Dasha was helping me and quickly it was almost dark as the sun was setting until the streetlamps turned on.
All of a sudden she’d let go of her mini-shovel and screamed pointing at the window. I rolled my eyes waiting for her to say something like “duuude, your windows are dirty,” as always and was still collecting our things, when I noticed she’s trembling and still stares. Slowly I turned my head and yelped too. The dark hangings just covered his back, so I couldn’t see him when searching for him.
Armand stood the whole time in the window, both palms on its glass and was glaring down at us. I mean directly at the spot we stood in! Only his hands and face were visible, because of the dark PJs he was wearing and his hair being loose which made his eyes appear darker and so huge.
*sigh* spooky vampy boy *shakes head* I think I peed a little.

*goes back to read to scare herself more*

20. I did get spooked a few weeks ago by my Crys, because she had just gotten gold eyes, which were reflecting in the dark and I could SEE her staring at me... I had to turn her head before I went to sleep.
