Ever felt weird about your doll after doing a face up?

Jan 19, 2011

    1. Rrr. I can only do one style, so I have difficulty imagining that I'd be able to make my doll look completely different. I *am* however seriously considering buying a second DZ Hal head (blank this time) to see what I can do with him myself without losing the face-up I know (and which was part of the package with which I fell in love)... So I guess my concern is with the factory face-up (which I cannot reproduce) vs. my own, which I am quite confident I can reproduce or even improve.

When I do a face-up, my first reaction tends to be that it's a complete disaster, but I grow to like it afterwards :p.

    2. All the time, and it always happens with my favorite doll, Kate. She's a complicated sculpt so it's really hard to do a face-up on, especially for a beginner like me. My most recent attempt made me feel like a total failure which really discouraged me. However... it helped me decide to splurge and I'm going to try and get a face-up slot with my favorite face-up artist~ I think I'll paint all my other dolls myself as being a face-up artist is a dream of mine, but Kate is too important to me. I don't think ANY face-up I do on her will be perfect enough in my eyes.

    3. One of my favorite things to do (supplies permitting) is redo faceups. I like having the extra practice!
But really, I've had 'botched' faceups before that have left my doll feeling like a stranger to me. Orian, my KDF Bory, is difficult when it comes to eyebrows--sometimes he looks angry, sometimes he looks clueless. Amelie, my little CH, is difficult when it comes to picking the right colors. I haven't changed my Cheshire Kitten Lance's faceup because it's a default faceup and it's so pretty u_u but eventually I'll have to attempt that, I'm sure.
Sometimes we have to redo faceups that might not fit our character, but I don't see it as a waste of time or anything to feel sad over. (maybe frustrated, though!) I enjoy doing faceups but I don't have many dolls, so when the need arises I find it a great learning experience. Even when a faceup is good, I'll sometimes wipe it just to have the opportunity to try new techniques I've learned from the forums. And with every faceup attempt, I feel closer to my doll. Eventually I'll manage to find that faceup that fits, but it takes practice.

    4. I only feel weird if it came out very, very wrong- not just bad as in not neat or of a good quality but bad as in it is not the right colour and looks nothing like it is supposed to.

This has only happened to me a couple of times. Once, I just wiped the face clean and started over, and the other time... well, the poor mess is in a box under my bed  I'll clean and fix him one day... one day...

    5. I just did my first faceup yesterday. -nod.- For a doll who'd been without one for... LMAO, half a year! XD
I'll admit that I was used to his blank face; at some point, I started thinking he was just cool-looking.
I was talking to my friend who gave him to me as a present, though, and she had the same doll (different gender) who she wanted to get a faceup for. (btw, we both have Hujoo Suve.) Then I thought, "Well, I guess it's about time, huh?"

It wasn't hard at all for me. :) I'm really happy with how he came out and, really, I think he's happy about it, too! He definitely hears my mom yelling at me for looking "plain" and that I'm not allowed to leave the house without wearing makeup... so I think he's glad he's not so plain anymore, either. xD

    6. My doll doesn't have a faceup yet, so I imagine I'll feel really weird about him once I finally get around to doing one.

    7. You know, I haven't actually thought about this before!

I've had dolls since 2004 and I have NEVER re-done ANY of their faceups-- so I haven't had to go through this.

Now I'm wondering! I didn't think I'd be worried over it... but I think it's possible that I might be weirded out when I have to have one of their faceups redone! ... oh noes! *_*

    8. Yes, if he looked too different from before. but I'm pretty consistent in keeping a face-up style with a character.

IF something feels off about a face up that I've done, it means that I'm not completely satisfied with it. I usually keep it for a few days, to see if it will grow on me or (in most cases) I stops bothering me.

If it bothers me too much, then I wiped off the face-up and start over again. (Or more simply, add to it,)
