1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Face up or no face up???

Sep 23, 2008

    1. My Sooah came with factory paint and she's beautiful but I think my next purchase will be sans face-up. I want to try to do it myself. (yeah, like I need another hobby!)

    2. With, for sure. I can't paint their faces for anything. I have tried. I might get it "perfect" the first time, but I always screw it up somehow, and never get it as good again. I rather not deal with it.

    3. I always prefer getting them with a faceup! I can always change it after if I don't like it. Without a faceup they'd seem incomplete to me and it would be harder to have fun with them and photograph them.

    4. I like ordering them with a faceup, though if I don't like the one on their website, then I would order it blank.

    5. I don't think I'd ever get one without a face-up, at least unless I took a class on how to do it first or something. Even if I felt I could do it, I like seeing what a doll's face and expression looks like before I buy her.

    6. I plan to get my first BJD with a factory face up -- I want to make sure it's of professional quality.

I'll probably take a class or two and do my own for the second. :D

    7. It depends on the doll.. Most dolls i plan on getting will have a face up already.. how ever the pongpong im getting will have no face up.

    8. After getting my first boy with a face-up (it's gorgeous, mind you XD), I have decided to get them without from now on. o__o Company face-ups run around $50-$70, while you can get EXACTLY what you want from a face-up artist for around $30-$50.

No face-up is the way to go~! :)

    9. even though i suspect that eventually i'll want to try to do my own faceup, i'm planning on ordering my first doll with it done. as a new owner, there are so many other things i want to do that i'd rather just have him "finished" when he arrives.

    10. I'm very sloppy with manual crafts so I'll always prefer with face up

    11. I prefer to get them without faceups, though of the four at home now came with faceups (and one still has it in place underneath all the additional work). One was wiped and the other two came blank. I want them to be specific characters, so I want to do the work myself to make them those characters.

The new one on order and the additional three faceplates coming in will also be sans-faceup, so I can do them myself. I really enjoy it and am getting better at it, slowly but surely.

    12. Weeellll it really depends on what the face-ups from the company I'm ordering from look like for me. Sometimes I looove them, sometimes I hate them. Also, if the face-up from the company really suits the character I create for the doll, I'll go for it.
I find they don't last very long though : |
      I'm just lucky that a friend of mine is willing to do face-ups for me .---.;;

    13. I always get dolls with face-ups. There's just something about the Asian style of painting that few westerners can duplicate. While I've seen some lovely custom face-ups, they're generally more graphic or more fashion doll style or simply harsher than the company ones. I do have a couple of dolls with custom face-ups but I bought them secondhand & the artist was one of few I really love so that was half the reason for getting them.

There have been a few dolls who's face-ups didn't look like the promo pics & I wiped them & redid them myself. But even then I find myself trying to imitate the Asian style, not that I'm always successful.

Please, I hope no artists take offence to this post. Like I said, I've seen some lovely work, it's just not the style I prefer.

    14. I prefer to get them without a face-up because I like the experience of doing the face-up for them.

    15. I never buy a doll with default face-up since I love doing them myself.

Some of my family members has really looked damned weird when arriving all naked! XD Still, that's what I expect from them so I don't get creeped out any more. ^_^

    16. When I first started by BJDs, I had to make sure they had a face up, even if I though I would get it changed later. Now, it's more that I only get the face up if it fits the character I want. Otherwise I get it black so I can have it done my way.

    17. I get them without faceups nowadays....I tend to bond better with the doll if She (or He) spends a month without a faceup.....I have to know that I like the mold, not the paint.

    18. When I bought my first dolls, I preferred to get them with their default faceup. I just didn’t want them sitting there with no expression, it would have made me sad. :| However, now that I have the supplies and the bravery, I plan on doing my own faceups. So now I’d prefer to have any dolls I buy in the future come without a faceup. It’s nice to make them your own, helps me bond with them as well.

    19. Depending on the company, I kinda like the default faceups, there is real talent and skill in painting these dolls to look beautiful, and I can appreciate that. As a person with no doll painting experience, I know that if I were to try a faceup on my dolls 'awake' head I'd probably mess it up and get really sad and angry and not touch it for a few days (because I'm like that!) But I am planning to get a practice face that I can experiment on until I get better technique, and I feel brave enough to do one properly myself!:)

    20. I think I prefer with face up.. I'll eventually get one without, and try for myself. But right now I go for face up, as I don't know how to do face ups. Lol. Also, face ups are mostly the reason I get attracted to dolls. I see a pretty face, and I'm like.. "WANT! * A*". XDD
