1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Face up or no face up???

Sep 23, 2008

    1. Always without face-up. I'm both a perfectionist and a stingy person (if you can call somebody that after they bought a doll worth 600$...) A perfectionist, meaning that I want to do myself all I can. I only buy eyes, wigs and shoes (okay, maybe some underwear and super cute accessories if they are cheap, like 5$ :D) for my dollies and do the rest myself. And yes, that about-fifty-dollars is a big money, even when talking about BJDs.

    2. without face up...give a face up is the most amusing part...

    3. I ordered Gale without a faceup, because I'm cheap >_>; I also would have needed to add to it, and I wouldn't want to screw up a company faceup. I figured I could pull off a decent enough one on my own (and I still think I did, though I could do better next time) so why spend so much more money on a faceup when I can get the materials for cheaper?

I'm planning on two more dolls, and one with be without a faceup, but whenever I get my yeon-ho I think I'll get theirs. I couldn't pull that one off, and it's almost perfect for my chara. I encouraged my friend to go without, so I could do the faceups for practice and for free.~~~

    4. If I love the head mold, I generally like to buy both! One for the "marketing" look of the doll and one for my interpretation. Of course, sometimes money is a factor, lol!

    5. I usually don't buy face ups with my dolls, I love doing them myself and the extra money that I would spend on a face up from the company could be saved or spent on something new for the doll. The one exception to that was my bluefairy Louis, I got him before I was comfortable doing them myself and ended up loving the job they did so much that I don't think I'll ever be able to bring myself to redo it.

    6. Has anyone tried modifying a factory face-up? I'm still deciding on the with or without thing for whatever doll I eventually decide to get. Often I find the company face-ups are just fine but may have one little detail that is off, like eyebrows that are too sparse in areas or slightly the wrong shade. I can paint already, but I do have bad days where I can't hold the brush still and I suspect doing a face-up entirely from scratch will be incredibly frustrating, but adjusting should be fairly easy from an aesthetic standpoint.

    7. I don't trust myself to be able to do a good faceup for my doll, so I ordered a custom faceup with my doll. I find the dolls to look a tad frightening without any faceup, but I think I'd get a doll without if I was more confident in my abilities, or if anyone I knew was particularly good at it.

    8. I've only just ordered my second doll (both with faceups). I don't have the correct equipment (sealer mainly) to do them myself, and personally I don't feel I could make them look as pretty as the factory done ones, it least not yet... although it is rather odd, since right now my income is from being and artist and painting. ^^;

    9. I always like no face-up as an option because then I can create a face from my imagination. Sometimes the defaults are so pretty, and other times (like on older Volks) the defaults are a little on the plain side.

    10. My first doll was a FCS SD13 and I'm really disappointed with volks, I paid a lot for my doll and the makeup is horrible !!! _-_ well the eyebrows are so great but I don't like the color.. the worse thing are the lips... are very very bad painted !! and the doll was so expensive... -_-Uuuu

    11. I always buy with no face up. I prefer choose a artist for do it. With a style i like.

    12. Actually I prefer to get a face up from the company and will do research first if the company X's face up looks exactly like their official photos. But many of my dolls had no face up service during ordering or some were second hand without face up. So I would have to send them to my favorite face up artist! :) I don't like doll without face up because they look so unreal and no-character liked.

    13. There are some company face-ups I really like in pictures, but I don't want to take the risk that it might not look as good irl. I order my dolls without face-ups (except for a doll I ordered back in October), so I can save money ánd I like to do the face-ups myself. Makes me feel more connected to the doll, I've had too many bonding issues already. When I do the face-ups myself, I can make them EXACTLY as I want them to look :).

    14. If i am playing with the doll, Yes. It need a faceup. other wise, after I dress it up, the doll will look like an incomplete painting. And kinda scary too.

    15. I always get the faceup, so it's something I consider when picking a doll. I'm too impatient to wait and find an artist to do it and I'm too much of a perfectionist to do one myself when I'm not much of an artist. I figure if I want to get or do a custom one someday, I'll just wipe the default one off.

    16. If I really like the default faceup and wouldn't change a thing, then I go with that.

If I like the sculpt a lot, but envision having a different faceup, and I know how I will accomplish it (have an artist in mind, or decide to do it myself), then I will go with that.

No. I understand that the doll will look vastly different without a faceup. I know I would have to wait to see what the doll looked like with a faceup to really know...

BUT... I really think if a company sells a doll or head without a faceup, they really should have good photos of the head without a faceup, since that's what people are buying! I think it is smart of buyers to ASK a company to supply photos of dolls without faceups if they are thinking of buying it. It's not a cheap item and it's wise to know what you are buying. Some companies won't do that, but it can't hurt to ask. If you buy without seeing faceup-less heads, then you are sort of buying at your own risk...

I mean... there's a certain amount of risk anyway, since photos don't always show items that well... faceups or not! It's something we have to deal with. But companies really should supply photos!!! And they won't unless you ask.

Well, they DO look different... Why not put eyelashes and eyebrows on, then? That's an easy way to fix the weirdness. :)

    17. At the moment, I think I prefer buying without faceup. I've never done one so I'd love to try making my own, and I'm quite confident it would turn out cute enough. Maybe not perfect, but that's okay. I will learn.

    18. I think it depends for me on a sculpt to sculpt basis. If I love a company face up then I could be tempted to sent the extra money and get it, but if it one that I don't think works for a character or I don't particularly like it then I'll pick the blank option.

    19. When I was new in the hobby I always got dolls with a faceup because I was afraid I would hate them if they sat around for any length of time blank, but as my own faceups improve I'm much more comfortable ordering blank. The sculpts I've gotten were still cute when they arrived blank - I think I just see potential when I look at them.

    20. Definitely faceup. I also like body blushing. I really like custom faceups and often go to my good friend for them.
