It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

First doll: custom or default makeup?

Oct 30, 2009

    1. I got my first doll blank and did the faceup myself, however, I'm an artist so it wasn't a big deal for me. I love doing faceups and seem to be amassing a bunch of heads. So my suggestion is: you could always get the default face and then if it's possible buy a second blank head. This way you can enjoy the doll while you send the blank head away for customization. Though this is only viable if you're willing to shell out the money for an extra head. Easiest option is to just re-colour the lips yourself without removing the previous faceup.

    2. getting my first doll with the defult makeup...but i plan to customize the next few dolls make up myself.

    3. I too got my first doll blank. She got her face up at a dolly sleepover/workshop. I did most of it myself including body blushing. I did have lots of help from all my friends there.

    4. My first boy got a default faceup, but I couldn't resist the crobidoll default. > u < it was just too stunning.

    5. I will get my first doll with default make up.

    6. I got my first with the default facup because he wouldn't arrive until I was in school, and I couldn't take all my art supplies to the dorm with me. I'm very happy with the way the default faceup looks on him, though I will be doing some work on it when I go home over the next vacation and I have access to my supplies again.

    7. Well, unhapilly I don't have how to chose to get a face-up with my first doll, since I'll buy the Vamp. miho head from Migidoll, and she doesn't offer make up service. BUT, in any way, I'd only ask for the make up service if the default make would be TOTALLY as I wish for the character I'm building. I think it's very worthy it if you pay a bit more and have your doll /exactly/ as you want. :3

    8. I do the faceups for all my dolls, my very first attempt was less than stellar, but I'm pretty competent at it now. I find I get myself more attached to the doll if there's some form of customization I do myself. If you have the confidence and the basic skill, you should try at doing your own faceups, it takes practice to get better. :)

    9. I got my first doll with default faceup and the second too because I was too scared to do it myself xD I didn't have the materials to do it and I don't know anyone near me who could have help me... But recently I did a faceup on the flotting I had for a long time and I really liked it! It's not perfect, but doing your own faceup feels like the doll is really unique and that none other looks like it! In the future, I might get my dolls blank so I can do the faceup myself, unless I really love the default faceup ^^

    10. I would suggest default if it's your first doll. However, don't think just because she gets a faceup she can never have anything again. You can always do your own in the future if you so decide (I think). Once you get more comfortable in the community I would consider sending it away.

    11. i brought my first doll with makeup and it really depend on you if you want to spend the money or not. if you are being someone else to do the makeup, ask that person how much they going to charge

    12. Mine was custom done by me! ^^

    13. My first dolly was a default. I didn't know much about bjd's then so no way was I going to ruin a $600 doll.

    14. my first and second were blank - i liked the sculpt but not the makeup. the third i had no choice she came with makeup done. i really like doing my own faceups but i think if i'd know n how hard it is to get msc here, i'd have gotten makeup on my first just so i would have had one done right away.

    15. I'm not an artist, but I will definitely do the faceup on all of my dolls myself. For me it's a huge part of bonding with the doll and making her 'mine'. I've seen gorgeous faceups that I envied, but I only use them as an inspiration, I could never buy a head with a faceup and leave it on...

    16. I order my doll with default makeup. At first I thought he was perfect as he is but after a while, I realize I prefer customizing him as much as possible, so I ended up having his faceup removed And Paying for the new one in about 3 months after I got him. ^^;;

    17. I guess, if you really like the rest of the face up then you should probably go for it and repaint the lips :)
I have the same problem planning to get a DM Ipsae since I dislike her lips too but love the rest of her make up. Luckily, I won't be getting her as the first doll and I think I'm going to get my first doll without so I can practice face up on him. Hehe. Then who knows, maybe I'll be good enough when I buy Ipsae :)

    18. I ordered my first, and all subsequent dolls, without face ups. My first couple of face ups were... really bad, but I've improved and I really like doing face ups.

    19. My first two were blank. The first was deliberate, the other was more or less a mistake on my part. My first was a dollfie dream and as basic standard models offered for personal customization they come blank. I happily did her face as best I could, I didn't know anyone else at the time whoncould do it, and I'm happy with how she came out.

The second one was a limited Iplehouse, I had ordered her w/o makeup to save money. Unfortunately i had fallen in love with the promotional photo and when she came home and looked so different from the photo, i was really disappointed with her. I didn't want to play with her and we didn't bond for like a year or so until i finally did her faceup myself. She came out pretty good.

So i'd say that if you want/expect the doll to look like the promotional photo, order it with a faceup to avoid disappointment. However if you have your own plan, and either know someone or trust your own skills, order it blank. Ordering them blank and doing the face yourself is very rewarding so even if it isn't for your first doll, i highly suggest doing it at some point.

    20. All my BJD arrived home with makeup of the companies they came from. But in my opinion it is the first BJD or not it depends on every person. In my case, if something like that happened to me nowadays I would order the BJD with it and would try to redo the lips by my own. By the way I am and what I knew when I started if it was my first I guess I would do one of these two things: 1) Buying the BJD with it from the company or, not so probably, 2) purchasing it just blank and asking someone to make it.
