For the Love of Old-School

Apr 22, 2018

    1. Even though I have a couple of newer Luts dolls on layaway, most of my dolls are from 2014 and older. I'm also a fan of the "big eyes, tiny mouth" anime aesthetic of older sculpts. I even managed to find a OG Volks Hatsune Miku a couple of years ago, still MIB! Talk about finding a grail!

I think that, unless another newer doll hits my heart, I may be basically done. Most of the more realistic dolls are "pretty," but they don't hit me like the old school sculpts do.

    2. I thought I was the only weirdo that wanted the same sculpt in every color! SD-F07 (Nono) is such a classic beauty and fulfills the big eyed aesthetic! I've always thought that sculpt reminded me of the Nana anime because of the stock and old Y!JA photos of the head with both sweet and goth aesthetic faceups. I'm glad Nono gets the love she deserves even now.

I personally really adore the SD-F01 look and ultimately want to own one in (almost) every color one day. I even love the SD-F03 and the various SWD molds as well. I'm actively acquiring a four sister in every color, one floating head or body at a time! Just shy a whole sunlight sister, an old skin body, and an Una head. Hope one day you can fulfill your dream of a Nono in every color!

    3. after further research I did have some luck on eBay, there are some overseas sellers that still cater to SD/ SD13. But I’ve had the best luck on Mandarake and yahoo japan.

    4. Nope, not at all!

I have 12 different versions of Cerberus Project's Shiwoo BJDs, in different sizes, skin tones and genders. :XD: They are definitely my favorite sculpt. I'm still missing a few Fairyland and OG Luts versions, but currently, I don't think I'll be able to get them.

    5. I thought I was over my burning 14-year-old desire for a Luts Dark Elf Soo when 2007 came and went and I couldn't buy her. My tastes changed! I got older! She was so bobble-headed and huge-eyed, why would I-

...this is Celandine and I bought her in November of 2023. Some dolly dreams never really fade.

    6. Celandine is beautiful, @~Suisei_Seki~! Congrats!

I have two DESs, so I get the idea of wanting them. I would practically sell a kidney to get a tanning DES, she's still one of my grails.

Honestly, I'm surprised that all of you with Luts Cerberus Project dolls aren't in the CP Delf Discussion Part 14 thread. Sorry, I can't remember how to make this into a proper link https://denofangels.com/threads/cp-delf-discussion-part-14.873282/

    9. I agree! Sure some new dolls are cute and all but the old dolls are the only ones that truly have stolen my heart! :love

    10. I didn’t realize how much I prefer old school dolls until I got back into the hobby recently.

In the 15 year hiatus I had, I would still sometimes look at dolls and find them so beautiful. Most of these were newer and more realistic looking.

I thought a more realistic doll would be my first purchase upon returning but nope! First was a Volks Hinaichigo, released in 2007 — my grail tiny. Second will be new, but Luts KDF Lemon was released in Summer 2009, so she’s definitely old school too!

My very first doll, a Soulkid, is my most realistic looking doll, but compared to newer Souldoll sculpts, she looks more stylized. I miss the 2008-2011 era of Soulkids so bad, so many gorgeous dolls. I don’t even need to own them, I just wanna see other owner pictures more often again!

Most of my collection is semi-anime looking — or extremely so in the case of my Volks F-12. Talk about old school for that one — her headplate says 2002 but I think the sculpt might be a little older. She is a very early Volks design.

Tomorrow I’m going to my first BJD meetup in a very long time, and I’m bringing all of my old school girlies with me. Feels like I’ll be arriving with a museum :XD:

    11. I know what you mean!

I took four of my dolls to a meetup recently, a Luts/CP Delf El, a Fairyland LittleFee Shiwoo boy, my OG Volks Dollfie Dream Hatsune Miku and an (probably offtopic) TV-headed BJD. I think Miku got the most attention, which is fine. My others got attention, and my Shiwoo was cooed over some, but I felt like, "here I am with my museum-quality dolls." :sweat:lol:

Its all good, it was nice seeing everyone's newer dolls and outfits, and it was still a fun time.

    12. I just wanted to show off my old-new boy. He's like 16 years old, but he is new to me. He is a Heisejinyao Ziyulinglong (HZ-Doll) Ao Ze Tian. When cleaning him and removing stains I sadly couldn't save his original face-up. I do like the way that he looks now. He's such a handsome boy. I named him Alistair.

    13. I find it interesting that this hobby has been around long enough to have the concept of "old school" and wonder if one day the hobby will continue until our current old school dolls become even "older school"!

    14. True, hahaha. In addition, what were regular doll molds from the earlier years have become "holy grails" today (mostly due to BJD company discontinuing or closing, which is tragic :().

    15. I do love the nostalgia and innocence of the older Volks sculpts. There is something comforting about them. There were some really unusual faces that were not popular and seemingly vanished and now they are utterly discontinued.
I would love to own a Volks Shinsia. There is no other doll that resembles her. She was pretty ubiquitous in the earlier days of the hobby because she was the cheapest; people would frequently modify her face and the damaged doll would invariably show up in auction. But eventually she was showing up less and less as more options became available at different price points.

Now she is like a ghost.
I would love to own even a damaged one.

The old Volks bodies did not pose well, but they were classic, like antique ball jointed dolls. I think there is something haunting and beautiful about that.

    16. I just put together a doll that is def old-school~

She's a HyperManiac Skadi head from 2006 that I've put on an SD16 body. She's wearing a 2007 dress from Softly She Walks, a wig in color Jelly from J-Pop I bought in 2007 and some Mystic Eyes in I think Chocolate from around 2008?

I'm still figuring her look out but at least now I can interact with the doll and see what happens~

    17. I would have been thrilled to see El. He was never a wishlist sculpt for me, but seeing him and an other CP sculpts instills some big nostalgia.

You have some delightfully old-school sculpts! I just looked at the dolls you have, and your list was really fun to read through.

I was surprised with how many older Volks dolls were at the meet-up! It was very small, just four of us. My girl from 2002 wasn’t even the oldest!
