Fullset or not?

Nov 10, 2010

    1. 1. Are you the type who prefers to buy fullsets or not?
It depends on whether I fall in love with everything that comes with the fullset package. My first doll was bought as a fullset because she's a limited edition as well as being my first doll, it makes bonding much simpler as I could just put everything on and start snapping pictures. The fact that I fell in love with everything about her was a definite plus on my end!

However, I would not get a fullset doll if something in the set does not appeal to me, like Luts' Zuzu Delf Rabi - Wendy Limited. I adore her outfit so much and the sweet sweet faceup, but unfortunately I'm not into the idea of a bunny doll so I'm passing on her until something else comes along.

      2. Why do you do it/why not? Did it just happen to "fit all the way"? Or do you think it's unoriginal? Please explain
I got my Blue Rose Elle because she was just perfect. Her sweet expression, her gorgeous blue eyes and the amazing outfit that she comes with - most YoSD size dolls have childish looks that somehow does not appeal to me. When I saw BR Elle, I just knew that I had to have her. She looked mature, yet childlike in a way too which is what I've been searching for in a doll. So I suppose you could say that she fitted everything I wanted in a doll. ^^

      3. Think of it the other way 'round - would you consider a fullset even if you've never bought one before/would you get a basic (or even hybrid) even though you're the fullset enthusiast?

Yup! I'm already eyeing a RosenLied basic Clover even as we speak. xD

      4. Another question. No matter what you personal preference is, what do you think of the general aspect - do you consider it easier, cheaper, safer ect. for someone to get their doll right starting with a fullset or just the basic? Would you advise someone to or against? Or does it depend on [insert reason]?
I would suggest getting a fullset as it's usually cheaper, but only if you think that everything about the doll appeals to you. No point getting a pair of eyes or a wig that you'll just toss around since you're only spending more cash buying another pair of eyes/wig.

    2. 1. Are you the type who prefers to buy fullsets or not?

So far I've only bought basics, and the most recent with no face-up so I can do them myself.

      2. Why do you do it/why not? Did it just happen to "fit all the way"? Or do you think it's unoriginal? Please explain.

Usually I don't purchase fullsets because I have a different artistic vision in mind for the doll's character, so it would be a waste of money to purchase it with all the accessories. I don't think it's unoriginal to use the fullset items if they fit the background of the character.

      3. Think of it the other way 'round - would you consider a fullset even if you've never bought one before/would you get a basic (or even hybrid) even though you're the fullset enthusiast?

I definitely would if I had enough money to afford it and if the aesthetics matched what I was looking for for the character. That being said, I'm currently considering a Rosette Fir fullset. :)

      4. Another question. No matter what you personal preference is, what do you think of the general aspect - do you consider it easier, cheaper, safer ect. for someone to get their doll right starting with a fullset or just the basic? Would you advise someone to or against? Or does it depend on [insert reason]?

It might seem easier because you start off with an outfit, wig, etc. that all fit the doll, but I don't know that it's any cheaper. As for cost, that mostly depends on where you buy clothes, wigs and eyes and which aesthetic you're going for in the overall look of the doll. If someone wanted to buy the fullset just to buy it and had no intention of actually using the items it came with, I would advise against it.

    3. --Are you the type who prefers to buy fullsets or not?
Actually that depends on how good I think the set is or what I plan to do with the doll/what I see in it.
So far I own three fullsets with one on the way. And the fullset is now only partly used. I don't know how the one on the way will turn out, yet.
--Why do you do it/why not? Did it just happen to "fit all the way"? Or do you think it's unoriginal? Please explain.
It just fitted some dolls and it didn't fit in other cases. Mostly I don't like the hair and clothes but am fond of the eyes. Sometimes I only use parts of the clothing, I don't think it to be unoriginal.
--No matter what you personal preference is, what do you think of the general aspect - do you consider it easier, cheaper, safer ect. for someone to get their doll right starting with a fullset or just the basic? Would you advise someone to or against? Or does it depend on [insert reason]?
I don't know if it's a way to get their doll 'right', but it might help getting to know the concepts of everything faster, rather than having no real clue as a beginner. For someone who wants to make their own clothes, it could be reference material, for example.

    4. 1. Are you the type who prefers to buy fullsets or not? Absolutely. I almost always would rather buy the full-set, but only if it's a good deal, and I like every single piece of the full set.
      2. Why do you do it/why not? Did it just happen to "fit all the way"? Or do you think it's unoriginal? Well, I prefer full-sets because if I like it, I feel like it just completes the doll. Obviously you can use your own clothes, or other clothes and wigs, but I like knowing that I have the complete piece for my doll. Like I said before though, I'll only get the full set if I like every single piece including the wig and all the way down to the socks.

      3. Think of it the other way 'round - would you consider a fullset even if you've never bought one before/would you get a basic (or even hybrid) even though you're the fullset enthusiast? I am a full set enthusiast, but I go for basic dolls sometimes too. I ordered my first two dolls, and one is a full set and the other is a basic, LOL.

      4. Another question. No matter what you personal preference is, what do you think of the general aspect - do you consider it easier, cheaper, safer ect. for someone to get their doll right starting with a fullset or just the basic? Well, it's probably cheaper to get basic, and then just find your own clothes for them, but to me it's worth it to get the full set if you like the whole set.

    5. 1. Are you the type who prefers to buy fullsets or not?

No. All my dolls I ordered so far are nude with face-up.

      2. Why do you do it/why not? Did it just happen to "fit all the way"? Or do you think it's unoriginal? Please explain.

There are always some parts of the full sets I don't like and that I would have to change. That would make the whole doll even more expensive than the full set already is anyways. And I want my dolls to be unique and I don't like the idea of others having the exact same doll in the exact same clothes and wig and eyes like me.

      3. Think of it the other way 'round - would you consider a fullset even if you've never bought one before/would you get a basic (or even hybrid) even though you're the fullset enthusiast?

Of course if I really like every single detail of it or would be planning to use the stock for one of my other dolls. For example I really considered a fullset Fairyland PKF Mio. But her stock wouldn't fit into my crew (and the stock of her was the main reason to buy her) and on the other hand, Mio looks too similar to my Luna.

      4. Another question. No matter what you personal preference is, what do you think of the general aspect - do you consider it easier, cheaper, safer ect. for someone to get their doll right starting with a fullset or just the basic? Would you advise someone to or against? Or does it depend on [insert reason]?

In the end everyone should get what they like the most, no matter if it is a little more expensive. The most important thing is having a doll in the end that you love to pieces, if it if a full set, parts of a full set or a complete new character :)

    6. After my last purchase...? Full-set all the way. It's the worst when the clothes you buy from another company don't fit. :/

    7. 1. Are you the type who prefers to buy fullsets or not?
Though I (sadly) do not own a BJD, I doubt that I will ever get a fullset. Faceup? Yes. Sleeping faceplate? Hopefully. Clothes and wig? Nope.
      2. Why do you do it/why not? Did it just happen to "fit all the way"? Or do you think it's unoriginal? Please explain.
I like to choose how my doll looks, and that usually includes clothes. Honestly, I've only very rarely found fullsets that I like. But anyway, I wouldn't really want to spend money on something that I may or may not like.
      3. Think of it the other way 'round - would you consider a fullset even if you've never bought one before/would you get a basic (or even hybrid) even though you're the fullset enthusiast?
If I found a fullset that I absolutely loved, and one that fit into what I thought that the doll's character would be like, yes. Otherwise, no.
      4. Another question. No matter what you personal preference is, what do you think of the general aspect - do you consider it easier, cheaper, safer ect. for someone to get their doll right starting with a fullset or just the basic? Would you advise someone to or against? Or does it depend on [insert reason]?
For beginners with BJDs, I would suggest a fullset. For one thing, they will very likely have less experience with buying wigs, eyes, clothes, etc. With more experienced people, it doesn't matter a bit to me. Whatever they prefer is what I suggest. :)

    8. I don't buy full sets because I like make my own clothes and I would only wind up undressing them anyway

    9. I buy both basics and full sets. I always buy a faceup because I can't paint, and to me it's hard to find a commission. The companies' faceups are usually quite good now. I don't always use the clothes, wigs that come in the fullset on the doll it came with. I only buy fullsets if I really love everything. You know I often don't use the items that come in fullsets, so I should just buy basics. :)

    10. As I only have one doll at the moment,I can't really give a preference. However,I do have very specific tastes in characters,so the only way I would buy one is if most if not all the items fit my needs, whether that be for a single character of for multiple. Full sets cost more then blanks, and while it's nice to be able to have some stuff for the doll as soon as it gets here,I'd rather have the extra money I would've spent on a full set to actually buy stuff that would suit the character I have in mind.

    11. 1. Are you the type who prefers to buy fullsets or not?

I've actually done both. One of my two dolls is a basic/custom, the other is a fullset of a licensed anime character.

      2. Why do you do it/why not? Did it just happen to "fit all the way"? Or do you think it's unoriginal? Please explain.

I was very happy to get my second girl as a full set for two reasons: One, I really like the character she's based on, so I was glad to have a representation of her in my "family", and especially to have her as that character right out of the box rather than having to spend ages hunting down, designing, and assembling bits and pieces. The other is that, being Volks, her full set is far higher quality than anything I'm currently capable of making, especially the staff props!

The only thing that really bugs me in regards to full sets are when people never put the dolls in something other than their default. Yes, I'm glad to have the option of putting Nanoha in her full badass barrier jacket, but that's what it is: an *option*. I've changed her eyes, probably for good as I don't consider her defaults a particularly good representation, and she does get costume changes periodically. I'd say her default wig is the most likely of her full set gear to get used regularly, since it's so cute and well-made, but she does have a couple other wig options that get pulled out now and again.

The way I see it, full sets are like your desktop themes on your computer: Just because there's a default that looks nice doesn't mean you have to keep it that way all the time. =P

Conversely, I really have enjoyed my custom girl Agatha. Making and finding stuff to suit her unusual persona has really gone a long way in helping me bond with her, and as a chronic DIY fan it's definitely been fun. But the thing that I love most about this custom is also the thing I hate most: the project NEVER ends. There's always something I want to make or buy for her. No, scratch that, more like ten somethings, all the time. It's cool to always have the inspiration, but sometimes it's just more pressure than I want to deal with.

Skipping the third question since I've got one doll on each side of the issue.

      4. Another question. No matter what you personal preference is, what do you think of the general aspect - do you consider it easier, cheaper, safer ect. for someone to get their doll right starting with a fullset or just the basic? Would you advise someone to or against? Or does it depend on [insert reason]?

No, actually; since I'm mostly on the Dollfie Dream side of this hobby, where licensed character fullsets far outnumber the basic molds available, and where aftermarket prices for said full sets can be downright brutal, a full set isn't always the best way to go. I think that you've got to decide what is making you want the doll the most, and work from there. If you love both the character *AND* the head (the latter being the most expensive part), then go for the full set. But if you just love the character, and you could take or leave the head, make the doll a custom and either get the rest of the stuff in a split or make the set custom. Conversely, if it's only the head you want, why fork out for the full set? Better just wait for a head or head-and-body sale/split to come available than pay extra for stuff you're not going to use.

    12. 1. Are you the type who prefers to buy fullsets or not?
I'm not the type to purchase fullsets.

      2. Why do you do it/why not? Did it just happen to "fit all the way"? Or do you think it's unoriginal? Please explain.
My choice has something to do with originality, but that's not the only factor. I design and sew clothes for my dolls, so why would I spend on clothes? And there are times when the items in the fullset don't appeal to me either. I choose to spend the extra money elsewhere.

      3. Think of it the other way 'round - would you consider a fullset even if you've never bought one before/would you get a basic (or even hybrid) even though you're the fullset enthusiast?
I would consider a fullset, but it has to be something jaw-droppingly amazing and really has to feel "worth it" to me.

      4. Another question. No matter what you personal preference is, what do you think of the general aspect - do you consider it easier, cheaper, safer ect. for someone to get their doll right starting with a fullset or just the basic? Would you advise someone to or against? Or does it depend on [insert reason]?
If it's someone's first doll, I think a fullset would be a good thing, so that they can immediately enjoy their doll. For someone with more doll experience, or maybe someone with dolls in the same size, I see no need for getting a fullset, unless you absolutely want the clothes/wig that the fullset comes with. It depends on the person's context, though most of the time I'd recommend just getting a basic doll (add a faceup, if they're scared to/can't do it themselves) and get creative with customizing their BJD. :)

    13. 1. Are you the type who prefers to buy fullsets or not? nope, haven't bought any fullsets yet.

      2. Why do you do it/why not? Did it just happen to "fit all the way"? Or do you think it's unoriginal? Please explain. The two dolls I've bought so far don't come in fullset varieties, as far as I know. I would definitely worry about my doll being too much like others if I bought a fullset, I think that I would at least end up changing out the wig. But it does appeal to me to get a fullset for my next doll, since I'm planning a new size and gender and I don't want to do too much shopping before he gets here.

      3. Think of it the other way 'round - would you consider a fullset even if you've never bought one before/would you get a basic (or even hybrid) even though you're the fullset enthusiast? I
t does appeal to me to get a fullset for my next doll, since I'm planning a new size and gender and I don't want to do too much shopping before he gets here. I think if I really liked the outfit in a fullset and the extra cost was reasonable to me, I would go for it.

      4. Another question. I guess it might be easier, as deciding on wigs and stuff is difficult for me, but I think in the end I get more enjoyment out of a more unique doll, and for someone similarly creative, a fullset isn't the way to go. I wouldn't advise someone either way, though, because I don't know their situation. I'd definitely advise a first-time owner to get a face-up, but as for everything else, a fur wig is pretty cheap until you find what you want and there's always sock clothes :)

    14. No fullsets for me. When I buy a doll I already have in mind what I want for them and fullsets would just be a waste of money because the extra stuff would be left untouched (happened already)...or I could sell them but I prefer having no hassles with my purchases.

    15. I am not a fan of fullest, I tend to dislike most of the accessories, clothes that come with the doll, I probably wouldn't even want to dress her in the outfit, I like to create their own personality myself. I like to choose their wig, eye colours, clothes myself (even if as a newbie I don't akways know where to find these). I am glad I am not a fan because the fullest are always completely sold out anyway so it seems

    16. 1. Are you the type who prefers to buy fullsets or not?
It depends, if the things the doll comes with is pretty and I like it I will but normally no. I like customising my dolls.

      2. Why do you do it/why not? Did it just happen to "fit all the way"? Or do you think it's unoriginal? Please explain.
I once bought a fullset because it was actually really cheap, and I actually thought the wig that comes with it would be nicer for my other doll so I bought it because her outfit was pretty and I wanted the wig lol

      3. Think of it the other way 'round - would you consider a fullset even if you've never bought one before/would you get a basic (or even hybrid) even though you're the fullset enthusiast?
I only buy full sets if they aren't extremely expensive and if I think their own costumes look good. I wouldn't mind getting basics like I usually do

      4. Another question. No matter what you personal preference is, what do you think of the general aspect - do you consider it easier, cheaper, safer ect. for someone to get their doll right starting with a fullset or just the basic? Would you advise someone to or against? Or does it depend on [insert reason]?
I think it is better to not get a fullset because it normally costs too much and it's quite unoriginal since I think that you should create your dolls appearance rather than just buy a fullset and leave it like that. If you buy a full set later on when you get bored of it you will realise it was just a waste plus you might not even like it when you buy it.

    17. I like fullsets. I cant really afford to buy clothes n things, so fullsets are very convenient for me.

    18. 1. I don't have any fullsets personally, but I generally prefer a basic and blank over a fullset and default face-ups.

      2. I have a set idea of all my dolls already before I buy them, so if the clothes/wig and/or the default face-up of the fullset doesn't match up with my idea then I'd rather buy it blank and get it done the way I want. However if by example the clothes suit this doll or another I have planned I might go with a blank fullset. :]

      3. I touched up on that in the question above. If the fullset matches my character I would buy it, if not I would do a basic-blank. I'm all for hybrids, even have a few planned out in my head.

      4. I don't feel confident telling someone else what they ought to do or not do. If the fullset appeals to you by all means get it, but if you feel 'meh' about the clothes and the wig / whatever else came with it wouldn't it just be a waste of the extra money?

    19. 1. Are you the type who prefers to buy fullsets or not?
It depends. I'm not against buying them but chances are you're going to spend the same amount on another outfit, anyway. The way I see it, the eyes/wig that the doll comes with probably wouldn't get used at the very least.

      2. Why do you do it/why not? Did it just happen to "fit all the way"? Or do you think it's unoriginal? Please explain.
It's not really unoriginal if you like the full-set character that is portrayed but I'd rather have a unique doll. Sometimes you can mix up the full-set outfit with other clothes so that'd be something I'd do.. in addition to giving a different wig and eyes.

      3. Think of it the other way 'round - would you consider a fullset even if you've never bought one before/would you get a basic (or even hybrid) even though you're the fullset enthusiast?
I don't really feel one way or the other about it. My Littlefee came as a full-set.. Sure, I paid a bit more for the outfit and wig but it was worth it since I didn't have to wait the 2-3 months by ordering him directly from Fairyland. I feel comfortable buying full-sets that way since I can fairly easily sell the outfit if I want.

      4. Another question. No matter what you personal preference is, what do you think of the general aspect - do you consider it easier, cheaper, safer ect. for someone to get their doll right starting with a fullset or just the basic? Would you advise someone to or against? Or does it depend on [insert reason]?
Overall, I like the aspect of full-sets. It lets you dress and display the doll immediately while you hunt for some new clothing/accessories and all of that. In ways it is cheaper if you want that particular outfit but if you're going to buy a whole different one then no. Also, if the full-set guarantees you the doll without the wait time.. that makes it more worth it in my opinion. I'd tell someone to go for it since you can always sell the full-set clothes for a fairly decent amount.

    20. 1. Are you the type who prefers to buy fullsets or not?
Depends on what's being offered - if I like everything that is offered in a fullset, and it isn't going to drain my finances, then sure! Otherwise, I tend to just buy a doll blank and go from there unless there's a specific item in the fullset I like, such as the clothes or the eyes, etc.

      2. Why do you do it/why not? Did it just happen to "fit all the way"? Or do you think it's unoriginal? Please explain.
I tend to buy "fullsets" from Pipos because they don't offer some of their dolls otherwise, but I don't feel that it's unoriginal. I have plenty of other "unique" dolls and I don't really care if someone finds a fullset doll to be unoriginal or whatever. If I like everything that's going on with it, then why not? It'll save time (and maybe money) in the long run.

      3. Think of it the other way 'round - would you consider a fullset even if you've never bought one before/would you get a basic (or even hybrid) even though you're the fullset enthusiast?
Well, my first doll was a fullset, but there on out I preferred basics/hybrids due to their customizing potential.

      4. Another question. No matter what you personal preference is, what do you think of the general aspect - do you consider it easier, cheaper, safer ect. for someone to get their doll right starting with a fullset or just the basic? Would you advise someone to or against? Or does it depend on [insert reason]?
Hmm.. this is an interesting question. Like I said, *my* first doll did happen to be a fullset, but that was because I was absolutely in love with everything about him. I'd say it's probably easier for beginners to go with a fullset, but definitely not cheaper or safer. I immediately felt drawn to other basic dolls because I had characters I wanted to bring to life in a tangible way - I feel like getting a doll "right" is part of the fun while being in this hobby. While I do like my original fullset doll, I had much more fun customizing my others and I feel like I might have bonded with them more because of it. Plus, that feeling when you *do* get a doll right is very satisfying!
