Fullset or not?

Nov 10, 2010

    1. Give me the full set every time!

You can then decide what you want to keep, sell off unwanted accessories. Plus I'm a little O.C D
so I like to have it all with pepperoni and black olives please! lol

    2. I prefer basic just because I like fullsets very rare.
But I think that the fullset is a very good thing and it would be great if some company will do fullset I totally love!
For new people in BJD - hobby I suggest fullsets, especially who collected the other types of dolls before.
But it depends on the nature of the owner and his imagination... :)

    3. 1. Are you the type who prefers to buy fullsets or not?
Well,I've never bought a fullset, but I really prefer to buy only the doll to work on till he/she looks like some character of mine. It's the way I feel more confortable about the hobby, since what I like the most about BJD is the fact that you can make the doll looks just the way you want to. However I would gladly buy a fullset if I think it fits the character personality or is just too damn gorgeous to let it pass (and if it's LE).

      2. Why do you do it/why not? Did it just happen to "fit all the way"? Or do you think it's unoriginal? Please explain.
Nah, I think it just doesn't suit my taste for dolls in general. I'm here for playing on the customization, not to get it all done for me. I would buy if the set includes things that can be used on my character or on other dolls I already have. It's not that fullsets are unoriginals for me, it's just that I like exclusivity (And there's a huge difference between these two concepts, imo).
      3. Think of it the other way 'round - would you consider a fullset even if you've never bought one before/would you get a basic (or even hybrid) even though you're the fullset enthusiast?
Sure I would! Why not? But I think I would by a fullset only if it's LE of some fantastic creature, 'cause all my characters are all humans, therefore I wouldn't have proper use for a fairy or a vampire doll. I'm afraid though he/she would be more for decoration purposes than for my collection itself. They will not be my characters, so I really would have some difficulty to get bonded with them.

      4. Another question. No matter what you personal preference is, what do you think of the general aspect - do you consider it easier, cheaper, safer ect. for someone to get their doll right starting with a fullset or just the basic? Would you advise someone to or against? Or does it depend on [insert reason]?
As I said, it depends on why you're in the hobby. If you just love pretty things and are not the type to customize, I would advise for the fullset. If you like to create, start with the basics, it's funnier this way, imo. I don't think it's the kind of situation where you need to chose between two sides and never ever change XD

    4. I've never had a fullset doll before. I would buy one if I saw a fullset that had the perfect wig, outfit and eyes..but so far I haven't seen any like that. Stramonium from Dollzone comes close though. Fullsets appeal to me now because just once I would like to buy a doll that has everything I need, and not have to go to a hundred different sites looking for the right items.

    5. 1. Are you the type who prefers to buy fullsets or not?

      I'm really not.

      2. Why do you do it/why not? Did it just happen to "fit all the way"? Or do you think it's unoriginal? Please explain.

90% of the time I am really not into the types of fullsets companies seem to offer for 1/4 scale. I am really not into fantasy, cutesy or j-popy sort of things in anyway and all of these are incredibly ill-suited for my characters that I choose to make into dolls.

      3. Think of it the other way 'round - would you consider a fullset even if you've never bought one before/would you get a basic (or even hybrid) even though you're the fullset enthusiast?

The exception is possibly Doll Chateau. Their 1/4 scale dolls tend to suit some of my more odd characters and I could see one of their sets working for a girl I plan to get. I very much doubt that I'll get a fullset, of course, but theirs are the most acceptable to me.

      4. Another question. No matter what you personal preference is, what do you think of the general aspect - do you consider it easier, cheaper, safer ect. for someone to get their doll right starting with a fullset or just the basic? Would you advise someone to or against? Or does it depend on [insert reason]?

I would go with a basic.... seriously. That way your doll is unique and special to you. I don't subscribe to the whole bonding thing, but I think that people that feel that they might.. best do something with their dolls to 'bond' with them.

    6. 1. Are you the type who prefers to buy fullsets or not
      ~Nope

      2. Why do you do it/why not? Did it just happen to "fit all the way"? Or do you think it's unoriginal? Please explain.
I don't hate fullsets, but I think I prefer to buy the doll much nude so it's easier to customize. But it depends on the fullset. There are times I liked the doll but not the set, and there are also times I dislike the set but not the doll, so it just depends on my taste

      3. Think of it the other way 'round - would you consider a fullset even if you've never bought one before/would you get a basic (or even hybrid) even though you're the fullset enthusiast?
~Not quite sure though, I liked fullsets but it depend on the set with the doll on

      4. Another question. Would you advise someone to or against? Or does it depend on [insert reason]?
~Just depends on the person and the set he/she is buying. But to me, the first step on the hobby is to get a basic doll. Some fullsets are quite limited and they'll just squash my hope when they're out

    7. 1. Are you the type who prefers to buy fullsets or not?
Typically not, but I do have one complete fullset and two partial fullsets in my collection.

      2. Why do you do it/why not? Did it just happen to "fit all the way"? Or do you think it's unoriginal? Please explain.
I wanted her as a fullset because I fell in love with her on the website. Her clothes, fantasy parts, everything was perfect. Otherwise, I like my dolls to have unique face-ups, clothes, eyes, wigs, etc. Usually I sketch out a concept character when the doll is on the way and when I'm working on buying clothes/eyes/wig. I can say that I am more creative with my non-fullset dolls simply because it was a more involved process and more time went into creating them. I find it more satisfying and fun to create something that is different than default :)

      3. Think of it the other way 'round - would you consider a fullset even if you've never bought one before/would you get a basic (or even hybrid) even though you're the fullset enthusiast?
I'd buy a fullset again for sure even though I prefer to get basic dolls. I just saw one I'd love to have bought as a fullset but I missed out on it. Bummer!

      4. Another question. No matter what you personal preference is, what do you think of the general aspect - do you consider it easier, cheaper, safer ect. for someone to get their doll right starting with a fullset or just the basic? If you wanted a complete doll with no extra waiting for other accessories, being sent off for a faceup or getting supplies, things like that, I would recommend getting a fullset. But more importantly, only get the fullset if you actually like it. If you are a patient person and want to customize all the way, then definitely go that route! I ordered my first doll blank, basic and nude, and got my second doll as a fullset. I can say that they were both great experiences!

    8. 1. Are you the type who prefers to buy fullsets or not?
Yes, I like to get all the stuff and often I’m responding to the photos I’m seeing on the seller’s web site.

      2. Why do you do it/why not? Did it just happen to "fit all the way"? Or do you think it's unoriginal? Please explain.
I think opening a box with the doll blank would be kind of like when you come back from Home Depot with a bunch of plywood, some screws and some other things. It would feel like, okay, now the work begins. I know a lot of people are into customization but I accept the dolls for who they are. I can see it in their eyes, they’re saying “Don’t go trying to change me, babe!” Seriously though, you can always change a face-up and of course get other outfits. But I’m more likely to have the skills to build furniture or a set moreso than tackling a face-up.

      3. Think of it the other way 'round - would you consider a fullset even if you've never bought one before/would you get a basic (or even hybrid) even though you're the fullset enthusiast?
I could see getting a basic set if the doll was an SD like I already have. I have plenty of clothes, eyes, shoes, etc. It would be a nice challenge to attempt the face up myself.

      4. Another question. No matter what you personal preference is, what do you think of the general aspect - do you consider it easier, cheaper, safer ect. for someone to get their doll right starting with a fullset or just the basic? Would you advise someone to or against? Or does it depend on [insert reason]?
I would likely advise someone new to get it if they can afford it. I think it takes patience and time and work to take care of a BJD and I think for many a fullset would allow them to get into it without feeling too overwhelmed that they have work to do before they can begin to enjoy. But this would depend from person to person. A friend’s daughter was over and we did a photo shoot and she loved pulling stuff out but was terrible at the work to put things back. I can’t see her starting with a basic. If you look at the Marketplace you see tons of blank dolls and heads for sale that people likely bought cheap and never did anything with. Of course on the forums we also see lots of people who have done amazing things. So it would depend on the person and gauging what their likely interest at the get-go is going to be.

    9. 1. No, for me.

      2. I am interested in customizing the doll. I don't want it already "finished," that takes away much of the fun of customizing it. As for unoriginal - well, gosh, I suppose from the one perspective you could say it's less "original" than coming up with your own doll concept. But from another perspective - exactly how original if your own doll concept, anyway? I see quite a lot of similar, owner-customized dolls around, and relatively few fullsets - and some fullsets have very unusual concepts that you don't see much among bjds in general.

      3. I would if I wanted all or most of the parts in the fullset and felt that they were worth their value and I would use them.

      4. Looking at it from the expense side, I think fullsets are a better value than putting together all the different parts of a doll yourself - consider the shipping costs, for one thing! It is also faster, and you have a better guarantee that it will be what you want exactly, since you've seen the photos of the end result rather than having some idea only in your mind. Think of all the people who get a doll to customize and spend much money on it and then resell it or resell parts (again, think of all that shipping money!) in order to get their concept just right. However, I think that buying basic and customizing is very rewarding if you enjoy customization. I suppose another, even safer, option is to buy a doll secondhand as you will know exactly what that particular doll looks like (remember that company faceups may vary from doll to doll, so it might be slightly different from the promo photo).

    10. I opted for a full set for my first doll. I went this way because I wasn't certain who she'll be when she arrives. I spend a lot of time browsing for wigs and such, but I haven't really found for that I want.

I feel in love with her photos, so I knew I would be happy with the full set even if I couldn't find other clothing or a wig for her. Plus, I'm also learning that the girl I picked is an odd size, so it's really challenging finding clothing that will fit her online. Mostly I just wanted her not to be naked when she came home. I figured that I could decide later if I wanted to keep all the parts to the full set or not. And as it was only like an extra $20 or so to go for the full set, it made sense for me.

    11. 1. Are you the type who prefers to buy fullsets or not?
It depends, for me, some times I fall in love with the dolls whole set up, like when you look at the complete set and you love their face and their outfit and their character outline. What really gets me, most times, is I see a doll and look at them like a whole set up, like the outfit, the wig, the eyes the faceup everything and think, ok, I love that... I want that.. I kind of fall for the character, I guess.

      2. Why do you do it/why not? Did it just happen to "fit all the way"? Or do you think it's unoriginal? Please explain.
Sometimes you just fall in love with how there set up, how the company portrays them as a doll.. with their cool stories behind them and all.. Sometimes, i'm not going to lie.. I just want the outfits.. lol

      3. Think of it the other way 'round - would you consider a fullset even if you've never bought one before/would you get a basic (or even hybrid) even though you're the fullset enthusiast?

It really all depends, its kind of like with anything, if it speaks to you.. you listen..

      4. Another question. No matter what you personal preference is, what do you think of the general aspect - do you consider it easier, cheaper, safer ect. for someone to get their doll right starting with a fullset or just the basic? Would you advise someone to or against? Or does it depend on [insert reason]?

It all depends on the person, if they love the mold of the doll and just want it left at that, by all means gun hoe to it! But I mean my personal preference is probably different from you guy's, I mean, imo, sometimes I fall into the category where if it's LE i'm going to fall into a small group who actually HAS the fullset.. I know it may seem selfish , but I have to fall for the character, and which most cases .. I totally do.. which is hard for me since i'm poor... lol

    12. 1. Are you the type who prefers to buy fullsets or not?
Yes, I would say so, got three fullset SD's.

      2. Why do you do it/why not? Did it just happen to "fit all the way"? Or do you think it's unoriginal? Please explain.
I would never buy a fullset unless it really is "the full package". I have considered many single dolls, and planned for them, everything. But then I come across a fullset I love, and buys them almost without hesitation.
I think it's about all the effort they put into it, like buying a beautiful work of art.
So, there we have it, I think, I just appreciate beautiful art.
I usually don't give my dolls a character, it may give me more room to roam.

      3. Think of it the other way 'round - would you consider a fullset even if you've never bought one before/would you get a basic (or even hybrid) even though you're the fullset enthusiast?
I could certainly be considering a basic, if the right doll came along.

      4. Another question. No matter what you personal preference is, what do you think of the general aspect - do you consider it easier, cheaper, safer ect. for someone to get their doll right starting with a fullset or just the basic? Would you advise someone to or against? Or does it depend on [insert reason]?
I would never tell anyone how to "play", just advise them to wait to get a doll until "the right one" comes along.

    13. I have one fullset doll and I doubt if I'd get another one. Its just I like my dolls to be mine, not Dollzone. I love my DZ Annie but I don click with her s much as my other girls who are originals.

    14. 1. I have not yet purchased a full set doll.

      2. For my last purchase, I wasn't a fan of the wig or outfit they had paired with the doll. For a previous purchase, I purchased a basic doll because the full set was already sold out, or I would have gone with the full set.

      3. I'm not at all opposed to purchasing a full set granted I like the extra pieces. I also prefer to have face-ups and body blushing done by the host company.
While I love third party artist work, the idea of shipping my head/bodies back and forth for commissions scare me.
Perhaps it is because I am still rather new to the BJD community but for now I prefer to have these services done by the doll company.

      4. It would depending on the person ordering the doll. Often times I have certain characters in mind for my doll, sometimes the full-set works, other times they don't. I'm sure others feel the same way. With regards to value, the outfits are (depending on the company) usually limited and excellent quality and will probably retain their value. Similarly, these outfits are rarely on sale separately so it's super tempting to add them on for an extra fee especially if you're looking to recuperate some money back after buying your doll.

    15. It depends. If the doll is a special edition usually I'll go for the fullset, my Dear Mine Blue Rose Priscilla and DOD Elf The-B are both fullsets, the rest of the dolls I have are not. It also depends on whether or not I like the outfit they come with or the wig they come with, sometimes those items just don't fit the vision I have for that particular doll. Also, if it's special edition it's nice to have the full set even if I don't intend on using the items just in case I'm ever forced to sell them, I would think having the fullset would raise their value. (I'm talking in extreme circumstances I have no intent to sell any of my dolls).

    16. 1. Are you the type who prefers to buy fullsets or not?

I have 10 dolls and 3 of mine I bought as fullset.

      2. Why do you do it/why not? Did it just happen to "fit all the way"? Or do you think it's unoriginal? Please explain.

My three that I got as fullset are my Ringdoll boys. I did it for several reasons.
      1) I love the look of Ringdolls outfits.
      2) It meant they had an outfit that fitted perfectly when they arrived.
      3) To buy all those pieces individually would cost a lot more.
      4) The fullset included other things as well (Swords, peg leg, extra hands etc...)

      3. Think of it the other way 'round - would you consider a fullset even if you've never bought one before/would you get a basic (or even hybrid) even though you're the fullset enthusiast?
I have bought Fullset, nude with company faceup, blank dolls as well as separate heads and bodies. I will go with whatever suits my taste.

      4. Another question. No matter what you personal preference is, what do you think of the general aspect - do you consider it easier, cheaper, safer ect. for someone to get their doll right starting with a fullset or just the basic? Would you advise someone to or against? Or does it depend on [insert reason]?
I would never tell others what to buy. It's personal preference. If asked I tell people to go with their heart and buy what feels right for them.

    17. I've just bought my very first doll.....Doll Love Anona......she comes with free random picked eyes & I got to choice any free wig. At an additional cost, I could buy her outfit but I didn't as I wasn't keen on it & bought her another. Unfortunately I'm not very artistic or creative & as I'm not brave enough to attempt my own face ups, I'm happy to pay the extra for them. I would/will buy a full set doll if I liked it ;)
