Fullset or not?

Nov 10, 2010

    1. I've not yet gotten a fullset, mainly because I couldn't afford certain aspects that were offered and felt that they were not really as needed if I really wanted the doll. If I had the money I might have gone with whole set- partially because clothes are always nice, and I can't always think of a neat way to do faceups/body blushing on my own and the thought kinda scares me. I'd be even more scared to do them myself if it was a limited.

      I feel part of what their appeal is is that they are easy, as in they are a whole complete doll with clothing that doesn't require as much work put into it from the owner- ie; a perfect newbie doll. They have their own semi-character template, a set of clothing and shoes typically, wig, eyes, a faceup and even bodyblushing. They even sometimes come with really cool extra parts that the owner may or may not decide to play with. It even has it's own name, if the owner can't come up with one. And they're beautiful. I know I have a hard time seeing a particular fullset as anything other than what's in the advertised pictures, I'm sure others feel the same. Another appeal is that they are so beautiful and do sometimes come with limited parts and outfits you typically can't find anywhere else- so one might get a fullset to not only keep the doll itself but to use the clothing or any "fantasy" parts on another doll that they would be a better fit on. Then there's the "worth more whole" collector's aspect as well. The only part of it that is unappealing is their price, typically.

      Would I suggest a newer enthusiast to get a fullset? Probably not. For one, they are typically pricey and that might scare or discourage them. And since a lot of them run for a limited time and/or a limited sculpt they might feel a bit uneasy doing anything with it. Hell, there are newbie's out there nervous about handling their new naked/blank standard everyday model. Plus if they're just diving into the hobby and still learning, I feel they should get a naked blank one so that they might learn about other things like doing their own faceups/body blushing, how to put in eyes and whatnot. If they then feel that they can't do a decent enough faceup or blush themselves they can decide then what to do in the future. Whereas I think that some one would be less inclined to want to touch their fullset in those ways because it was already done for them. Though if you have the money and have done enough research- or the doll really is just perfect as such and they have to have THAT one, go for it. I don't see why not. Like I said, they are easy and they are beautiful. :)

    2. 1. Are you the type who prefers to buy fullsets or not?
      I don't really consider myself to be any type really. If it's a fantastic fullset I can be persuaded to buy, but I also buy just basic dolls too.

      2. Why do you do it/why not? Did it just happen to "fit all the way"? Or do you think it's unoriginal? Please explain.
      I did buy a fullset recently because I felt everything that came with it was just perfect in every way from face-up to shoes. I think people should just buy what they like and not worry too much about trying to be super "original".

      3. Think of it the other way 'round - would you consider a fullset even if you've never bought one before/would you get a basic (or even hybrid) even though you're the fullset enthusiast?
      As I've said before I've bought both. I just buy what I like.

      4. Another question. No matter what you personal preference is, what do you think of the general aspect - do you consider it easier, cheaper, safer ect. for someone to get their doll right starting with a fullset or just the basic? Would you advise someone to or against? Or does it depend on [insert reason]?
      I would advise anyone who really likes a fullset to just go for it. There are usually a lot of clothes in a set and they can make for good mixing and matching with other parts of your doll's wardrobe. I think fullsets are also nice for first time buyers, so they can have something that isn't naked straight out of the box and they can get started right away taking pics and whatnot.

    3. Well honestly, and hope no one who reads this will take me wrong but... I hate fullsets with a burning passion.
      The beauty of these dolls and hobby in general is "take this sculpt and make your own little person" or that's how I see it. Everyone will personalize it and make it their own creation, a beauty of their own, something unique in the world. But a fullset destroys all that. The doll comes with wig, eyes, face up and clothes. It's like a mass production of that single "character" and unless you won't use it all together, your doll won't be unique, but then again, if you won't use it, why get it in the first place?
      It even bothered me when I saw a RS Long once with lips and hair the same color as mine :/ it didn't look like my Long--- but the resemblance was too much. I can't imagine why people would buy a fullset or even a factory faceup, they are bound to see look alikes of their dolls for as long as they keep it together :/

    4. I have bought a fullset, but that was basically because the doll came with it at a great price during a special event. Do I prefer them- not really, my wallet /budget speaks before my want list does.

      I would buy another fullset if it fits in completely with what I am looking for, I like it, etc. I would also recommend that for newbies since buying a basic doll might be very intimidating to them, especially if they wish to play immediately out of the box. I'm not really a die hard basic doll or die hard full set, it is whatever my personal likes and budget needs are at the time.

    5. 1. Are you the type who prefers to buy fullsets or not?
      I prefer Full Sets if I like the whole set and if it matches what I'm looking for.

      2. Why do you do it/why not? Did it just happen to "fit all the way"? Or do you think it's unoriginal? Please explain.

      (see signature)
      Why do I do it:
      Madeleine - At first it was because it's my first doll, so I did not want to have to go through the whole process of getting multiple items that may or may not fit her.
      Lewi - I fell in love. And a friend is getting Luna, so we both decided to get the full sets. Plus the outfit is in my favourite colours.
      Lovely Sally - Limited edition doll, came in the fullset, I want the clothing for myself too!
      Molly - Also only came as a fullset, and I loved her.

      Did it fit all the way:
      Yes for all of them!

      Is it unoriginal:
      Maybe. But then again it's just a starting point from where the character develops and each owner will do something different with the doll later anyway.

      3. Think of it the other way 'round - would you consider a fullset even if you've never bought one before/would you get a basic (or even hybrid) even though you're the fullset enthusiast?
      Again see signature. I'm currently saving up for a basic pp ante. Her faceplates will be an alternate "look" for Maddee, and her body will be modded/painted/bodybrushed to fit my pukishka face. I may get magic items to go with the cat person. And I'll get a basic Leah some time in the future too.

      4. Another question. No matter what you personal preference is, what do you think of the general aspect - do you consider it easier, cheaper, safer ect. for someone to get their doll right starting with a fullset or just the basic? Would you advise someone to or against? Or does it depend on [insert reason]?
      I think it depends on the person. Starting with a basic lets the character be whoever you want them to be, but for a newbie I'd suggest first doll = fullset, because it gives a foundation that is already in place and that can be experimented on later. I think it may even be cheaper to start with a fullset than to piece together a doll from different companies and sites. However I also know that it is fun planning all of the stuff you want to buy for your basic doll and sometimes a fullset almost predetermines the character.

    6. 1. Are you the type who prefers to buy fullsets or not?
      No, I'm not the fullset type. I don't mind if someone buys fullset or think they are stupid, though.

      2. Why do you do it/why not? Did it just happen to "fit all the way"? Or do you think it's unoriginal? Please explain.
      I just feel that typical fullsets don't meet my needs - I haven't found a fullset for me, thats it. And I rather "make" my own doll, I want to see her progress and how she changes and fullset dolls don't have much to improve. I'm the type who wants to be her doll to be as much original as possible. So if I found one I liked, I would still consider hard whether to buy it or not..

      3. Think of it the other way 'round - would you consider a fullset even if you've never bought one before/would you get a basic (or even hybrid) even though you're the fullset enthusiast?
      As I said I think I wouldn't buy one. I just feel they are not for me.

      4. Another question. No matter what you personal preference is, what do you think of the general aspect - do you consider it easier, cheaper, safer ect. for someone to get their doll right starting with a fullset or just the basic? Would you advise someone to or against? Or does it depend on [insert reason]?
      I wouldn't tell anyone not to buy fullset even I don't myself prefer it. This is so expensive hobby that I think everyone should get JUST what they want - whether it is fullset or not.
      It might be easier way to get your doll "complete" - just the way you want it to be. I think that the basic dolls changing progress is a never ending story, because the owner's mind may change often and sometimes you just feel you need to change your doll's style (I don't own a doll so this is just my opinion). You can also change your fullset doll's style to complete different - but I wouldn't be a fullset anymore, would it?

      Just ignore my grammar/spelling mistakes. -.- I hope you understand. :)

    7. 1. Are you the type who prefers to buy fullsets or not? ~~~ Nah, I personally dont like fullsets.

      2. Why do you do it/why not? Did it just happen to "fit all the way"? Or do you think it's unoriginal? Please explain.
      ~~~
      I don't because I like to customize the doll. (I'm sure others do too). But I can use the money from the fullset to buy clothes that fit my doll's desired personality, instead of having to save up even MORE.
      3. Think of it the other way 'round - would you consider a fullset even if you've never bought one before/would you get a basic (or even hybrid) even though you're the fullset enthusiast? ~~~Yeah, who knows. I may end up buying a fullset sometime in the future. I dont have anything against them, I just prefer it the other way around :)
      4. Another question. No matter what you personal preference is, what do you think of the general aspect - do you consider it easier, cheaper, safer ect. for someone to get their doll right starting with a fullset or just the basic? Would you advise someone to or against? Or does it depend on [insert reason]? ~~~~ If someone REALLY REALLY likes the fullset, then heck, GO FOR IT. It's probably the only place you can get it. But if you don't like the fullset and want something else/doesnt fit your doll's personality, then dont. :)
    8. 1. Are you the type who prefers to buy fullsets or not?
      More no than yes - My first two dolls, one was basic, one was a fullset.
      other dolls I've ordered since, were basics/no extras.
      2. Why do you do it/why not? Did it just happen to "fit all the way"? Or do you think it's unoriginal? Please explain.
      I loved the stuff the FullSet came with.
      Everything was perfect and I've not found anything that came close to it, since.
      Plus, the outfit was made with lots of separates (Hat,Boots,Shirt,OverVest,HotPants, Jewellery) , so I could mix and match with other clothes. They could very easily be everyday clothes. I liked that.
      3. Think of it the other way 'round - would you consider a fullset even if you've never bought one before/would you get a basic (or even hybrid) even though you're the fullset enthusiast?
      Well, I've had one fullset. My other doll was basic. My next one was basic, and all future ones more
      than likely will be too.
      If I saw another doll with a fullset that I liked, I may very well buy that too.
      But most are too intricate, delicate and fancy for me >_>
      4. Another question. No matter what you personal preference is, what do you think of the general aspect - do you consider it easier, cheaper, safer ect. for someone to get their doll right starting with a fullset or just the basic? Would you advise someone to or against? Or does it depend on [insert reason]?
      I think fullsets give a very good opportunity to get an All-In-One doll.
      Basics are good , so you can make your own character/doll piece by piece[clothes, faceup,etc]
      I ended up selling the FullSet Doll, eventually. I felt I couldn't make her my own, as I didn't want to wipe the faceup.
      And I now like doing my own faceups, so all future dolls will be blank.
      I wouldn't advise anyone to go for either particular doll, FullSet or not - I've experienced both , and would more than likely go for a basic in the future again.
    9. 1. Are you the type who prefers to buy fullsets or not?
      Nah. The only dolls I have that I can talk about full sets are pullips and Dals. And my Dal has not touched her stock outfit, eyechips or wigs since she was in the box. If the fullset is kind of casual and you can mix and match it with other things, sure, I'd love it! But in most cases you cant.
      2. Why do you do it/why not? Did it just happen to "fit all the way"? Or do you think it's unoriginal? Please explain.
      Most fullsets just dont go with the characters I have my dolls as. Simply.
      3. Think of it the other way 'round - would you consider a fullset even if you've never bought one before/would you get a basic (or even hybrid) even though you're the fullset enthusiast?
      Like I said, if it was a casualish outfit and not something very out of character for my dolls, sure!
    10. 1. Are you the type who prefers to buy fullsets or not?
      Not really but I would love to make clothes for my dolls n___6
      2. Why do you do it/why not? Did it just happen to "fit all the way"? Or do you think it's unoriginal? Please explain.
      Well, it's my first time buying a BJD and I do not have much idea whether or not the clothes that I make would fit her or not and I don't want my doll to be naked until I finish making one for her =____='''
      3. Think of it the other way 'round - would you consider a fullset even if you've never bought one before/would you get a basic (or even hybrid) even though you're the fullset enthusiast?Well, it's a good idea to get a fullset one for the first time for I have little idea how the doll will turn out to be and again, I don't want them naked =____=''' If I were a fullset enthusiast, unless the fashion style is my cup of tea else I won't get it eventhough I'm a fullset enthusiast n___n
      4. Another question. No matter what you personal preference is, what do you think of the general aspect - do you consider it easier, cheaper, safer ect. for someone to get their doll right starting with a fullset or just the basic? Would you advise someone to or against? Or does it depend on [insert reason]?
      Well, generally, fullset is an easier and safer option to choose from but to be fair, I would advice that person to go for fullset if that person do not have much idea or a newbie like myself in BJD but if that person have some experience in BJD then, I would advice them to get the basic ones so that he/she could make up the characteristics that they desire for their dolls which is more unique n___6
    11. 1. Are you the type who prefers to buy fullsets or not?
      Well I say yes and no again. I have two dolls who has fullset but another one has perfect clothes what came with him.
      2. Why do you do it/why not? Did it just happen to "fit all the way"? Or do you think it's unoriginal? Please explain.
      It was just what I was looking for. The doll was very pretty and clothes was just what I wanted so why not. But this doesn't mean that all my dolls are fullsets. It just happened to be just doll with right clothes.
      4. Another question. No matter what you personal preference is, what do you think of the general aspect - do you consider it easier, cheaper, safer ect. for someone to get their doll right starting with a fullset or just the basic? Would you advise someone to or against? Or does it depend on [insert reason]?
      Maybe it is faster just buy fullset but it is more expansive buy all together than to buy just the doll. Well if somebody likes to buy fullset or not then go for it.
    12. 1. Are you the type who prefers to buy fullsets or not? My First Three Dolls Are Fullset but i would also buy dolls that are not fullset.
      2. Why do you do it/why not? Did it just happen to "fit all the way"? Or do you think it's unoriginal? I would only buy a fullset if i like everything it comes with but i would mostly only buy one if it comes with fantasy parts including feet, hands, tail, wings, etc. but i would probly opt out of the clothes if i dont like them. but i also have a few that i only like the head and a different body i have a few lined up. and have other clothes and makeup ideas planned.
      3. Think of it the other way 'round - would you consider a fullset even if you've never bought one before/would you get a basic (or even hybrid) even though you're the fullset enthusiast?
      yes i would if i fell in love with the doll.
      4. Another question. No matter what you personal preference is, what do you think of the general aspect - do you consider it easier, cheaper, safer ect. for someone to get their doll right starting with a fullset or just the basic? Would you advise someone to or against? Or does it depend on [insert reason]? it would be cheaper to not get a fullset doll but if they want the fullset and like how it looks then id say get it but id also tell them to think about it because they might want to do the makeup them selves or have something else in mind
    13. 1. Are you the type who prefers to buy fullsets or not?
      I guess I'd fall under the "not" category, cuz I've only bought one fullset out of all the dollies I have.
      2. Why do you do it/why not? Did it just happen to "fit all the way"? Or do you think it's unoriginal? Please explain.
      The one I bought just happened to fit my character perfectly; outfit, doll, and all except for his eyes and wig, but I can use the wig he's coming with for a different doll, and dolls normally come with a random pair of eyes.
      Why do I normally not? No. I don't think it's unoriginal. If it fits what someone wants, then they should buy it! Most of the dolls I like just happen to not have the outfit I want. If I like the face up, I'll get it with a face up. If not, I'll do it myself. =]
      3. Think of it the other way 'round - would you consider a fullset even if you've never bought one before/would you get a basic (or even hybrid) even though you're the fullset enthusiast?
      o.o' I'm not sure if I FULLY understand this question, but I'll answer it how I think you intended it:
      If I only bought full sets, I'd imagine I would get a basic or a hybrid if that's what I wanted.
      4. Another question. No matter what you personal preference is, what do you think of the general aspect - do you consider it easier, cheaper, safer ect. for someone to get their doll right starting with a fullset or just the basic? Would you advise someone to or against? Or does it depend on [insert reason]?
      I really think it depends on what someone wants. If there's a fullset that I see, and I don't like the outfit for that particular doll, I think to myself, "am I going to use these clothes for another doll, or are they just going to sit in the shoebox closet I have for these dolls forever and collect dust?"
      I wouldn't advise someone to get, I wouldn't advise someone not to. I think they should do what they want. For me, it's cheaper to get basic sets for the soul purpose that a lot of the outfits I want for my dolls are particular, and are really hard to find, and usually I end up making most of their outfits on my own.
    14. 1. Are you the type who prefers to buy fullsets or not?
      *My first doll was a limited fullset imho. I like and would buy fullsets and nonfullsets equally. I base both fullsets and nonfullsets around the character I want represented.*
      2. Why do you do it/why not? Did it just happen to "fit all the way"? Or do you think it's unoriginal? Please explain.
      *I buy what I love, that's just me. If a fullset suits a character I have in mind, then it's coming home to me. It's not 100% unoriginal to me if you have a character in mind.*
      3. Think of it the other way 'round - would you consider a fullset even if you've never bought one before/would you get a basic (or even hybrid) even though you're the fullset enthusiast?
      *Yep, lol. I sure would, but the reasons for doing would be different then.*
      4. Another question. No matter what you personal preference is, what do you think of the general aspect - do you consider it easier, cheaper, safer ect. for someone to get their doll right starting with a fullset or just the basic? Would you advise someone to or against? Or does it depend on [insert reason]?
      *I think it depends on a person. There's something for everyone's taste in the BJD world. I would advise newbies to go with a fullset because it's normally cheaper and easier to get a fullset imho plus you get the much needed things you would need for the doll too at one time. But if someone is comfortable going basic-do it!! It's your doll and as long as they're happy, that's what matters most.*
    15. I am considering buying a full set..mainly for a male doll. This is for one reason: i'm not good at making male clothing and reason two: some of the things they come with look to be in good quality and you get more all at once. Instead of having to wait for the doll and the hair (for example) or outfit, you would get all of that at once? I assume that's what happens. Then again fullsets kind of deprive from making the doll unique for the owner, although they could change them, but that would defeat the purpose of buying the full set. Full sets do give that doll something to wear that fits them right out of the box, so it's not so drafty for them until they can get a new outfit. There maybe another doll out there to look the same but no one said that twins have the same personality ^-^.
    16. I don't think I'll ever buy fullset doll. Why? 'Cos it's always wrong make-up (in my pov), often strange cloths that doesn't fit my image of doll's character, so doll doesn't look the way I see it at all >< It's so much better to create your own doll's personality (inside included). And if I have to wait for it - no troubles, I can deal with it~
    17. (1, 2, 3 and 4 combined...)
      Answer: I am a complete newbie. I guess that is why I have bought a full set... I fell in love with the doll's face and character, which perfectly suited the persona I have in mind for him. His clothes don't suit that persona at all. But I have bought them anyway because he is my first and I couldn't bear the thought of him being naked until I figure out how to make clothes for him. I should add that I haven't found any other ready-made clothes that would suit his character. The full set is lovely and made just for him. I like it just for itself. I was also thinking that it would be good to have a set of bjd clothes to look at, as a help when I try to make my own. Also, if it turns out I really fail at sewing, the poor boy won't catch a cold.
      Last and probably not least, I guess that when I ordered (on impulse, I confess), I just wasn't used to the idea of complete and utter customisation. It just seemed odd not to buy a full set, even if I did intend to turn him into my own boy. -Yep, I'm THAT much of a newbie. I won't do it again, though, except if a company brings out a doll looking like a knight of the Round Table XD. My next doll will be nude.
      So even though I'll probably not buy another full set, I don't regret doing it. For me it's good.
    18. Sitting here, reading peoples replies makes me feel so very, very inexperienced and newbie :(
      - Not that it's an entirely bad feeling, 'cause it means I have lots to learn. And I like that.
      1. Are you the type who prefers to buy fullsets or not?
      I have recently ordered my first ABJD, a DZ Hid, and he comes with his fullset, even though I heard his wig should be terrible (which is sad, of course..) - But right now, in my current state of newbie'ness I love the idea of getting a "complete" doll, so that I won't have to wait longer to make him seem.. alive. I prefer the fullsets, mostly because I'm so inexperienced that I simply don't dare to try anything bigger and more intimidating just yet :sweat
      2. Why do you do it/why not? Did it just happen to "fit all the way"? Or do you think it's unoriginal? Please explain.
      I love the fullset for my doll. But I'll change it and mix it with other clothes and such. He can't just look like the picture on DZ's webpage, that would be silly and he wouldn't be mine. So I'm seeing fullsets as very very convenient but also a tad unoriginal.
      Did that even make sense? *_*
      3. Think of it the other way 'round - would you consider a fullset even if you've never bought one before/would you get a basic (or even hybrid) even though you're the fullset enthusiast?
      If I ever get good enough, I wouldn't hesitate on buying a basic or creating a hybrid. But right now, again, I don't dare to do anything that could make me sad about my dollies.. Also I only buy dolls I feel something for. Like.. I need to fall in love with them :)
      4. Another question. No matter what you personal preference is, what do you think of the general aspect - do you consider it easier, cheaper, safer ect. for someone to get their doll right starting with a fullset or just the basic? Would you advise someone to or against? Or does it depend on [insert reason]?
      I really like the whole idea about a fullset - it makes it easier to get your hands on your first doll. Without getting very stressed out because of all the parts you're missing. But if nothing is changed on the doll, not even clothes.. then.. well dollies are made to be personal, and, in my eyes, they should never keep the same appearance as the company's photos. Because that's sad, and it will seem like the person never thought much about their doll. Which is very sad! :...(
      I would never advice someone to do anything when it's about choosing a doll. Maybe I would recommend double-joint or.. no, I would merely tell (if the person didn't know) that there was a difference in posing ability and stuff. But I don't like to interfere in the act of choosing a doll, because I believe it's very personal. I'd never say someone's darling doll is ugly, even if I thought so (unless they asked me about my honest opinion, and I wouldn't call the doll ugly), because it's that personal (and I don't like being rude either). Fullset or nude/blank - It all depends on what your gut tells you :3nodding:
      So far if I ever buy another MSD-sized male, I'll buy him nude (he can share clothes with my DZ Hid) but if it's a girl (or SD fe/male or something not MSD male) I could probably choose a fullset again, also to get my hands on more.. stuff!
      Gorgeous stuff! *grabby hands* :XD:
    19. 1. Are you the type who prefers to buy fullsets or not?
      It depends.
      2. Why do you do it/why not? Did it just happen to "fit all the way"? Or do you think it's unoriginal? Please explain.
      If I really like some of the items included in the fullset, or the fullset overall. Or (like my first doll) out of matter of convenience. Yes, I do think it's "unoriginal", but it doesn't really matter. People are free to do whatever the heck they please with their dolls.
      4. Another question. No matter what you personal preference is, what do you think of the general aspect - do you consider it easier, cheaper, safer ect. for someone to get their doll right starting with a fullset or just the basic? Would you advise someone to or against? Or does it depend on [insert reason]?
      Personally, I think it's a heck of a lot easier just getting a fullset to begin with, especially if it's too much of a hassle going around to other places to buy things for your doll. I'm not against starting off with a full et doll as a first doll. (After all, that's exactly what I did.) Just make sure you're okay with everything being included with the set.
    20. 1. Are you the type who prefers to buy fullsets or not?
      I can categorically state that I would NEVER buy a full-set doll.
      2. Why do you do it/why not? Did it just happen to "fit all the way"? Or do you think it's unoriginal? Please explain.
      Yes, I do feel they are unoriginal and uncreative. That's not to say their owners are unoriginal and uncreative- I've seen beautiful photography done with full-set dolls that is both! But personally, the whole point of a doll for me is customizing it and making it look unique, and just the way I want it. Even if a full-set is very limited, I would still felt I owned something that wasn't unique, and what's more, I'd feel lazy about it too. I enjoy making my dolls look the way they are- why would I pay more money to let someone else have all the fun?
      3. Think of it the other way 'round - would you consider a fullset even if you've never bought one before/would you get a basic (or even hybrid) even though you're the fullset enthusiast?
      No, I wouldn't. I have seen beautiful full-sets, but my reasons above stop me from buying one. For me, it wouldn't feel right. Mind you, I'm a customizing addict, so how I feel certainly isn't right for everyone. But most of my dolls are hybrids, and all of them have been modded, as well as all having their own faceups/body-blushing done by me. I love looking at my dolls and knowing there are none others like them, and that everything they have is because of me and my work ^^
      Bear in mind this is just how I feel about my own dollls, and isn't meant to offend anyone who may feel differently from me.
      I would advise people not to listen to other people's advice ;) and just get the doll they want, full-set, basic, hybrid, art-doll... whatever they set their hearts upon! :)
