Fully open, half-closed, almost closed or fully closed eyes?

Sep 20, 2022

    1. I love half opened eyes T_T <3 Half opened dolls are my favorite!! Most of my dolls are fully opened and they are beautiful, but when I see the picture of half opened dolls, I feel like falling in love❣️

    2. All my dolls have wide open eyes, but I definitely want to get one with half-closed eyes at some point. There was a Bluefairy TF May sculpt with half-closed eyes that I absolutely wish I owned (Special May Valentine, I think?). I have a TF May with wide-open eyes which I love, but I do prefer the half-closed eyes sculpt more I think.

    3. My whole collection has fully open eyes. I like the look of fully closed but I don't think I'll ever own one. Not really a fan of half closed.

    4. For my collection, I only have fully open eyes at the moment. But I like partially (or maybe half by some standards) closed eyes like Volks romantic glance and sweet dream heads, which I hope to get some of eventually.

    5. All of my dolls have fully open eyes and I do prefer it. Though I have seen partly closed and half closed sculpts that are really nice.

    6. I usually prefer heads with open eyes as I find ones with half-closed eyes tricky to photograph and difficult to position the eyes in.

      I have no interest in heads with almost closed or fully closed eyes as there doesn't seem to be much you can do with them.

    7. I definitely like the look of half-closed / heavy-lidded eyes more overall. Although it does tend to register more as a different eye shape when the sculpt is more stylized. My resin doll has that sort of face and since she's not very realistic it registers more as a specific eye shape than a half-closed look to me, which is actually why I picked that sculpt in the first place.

      I'd generally think of open-eyed sculpts as the default though, and don't dislike them.

      As for the sleeping heads with fully closed eyes...while I do like them, I'd definitely feel like it's too limiting. If an open-eyed sculpt I liked also had a sleeping version I might consider getting both for more photography options for one doll, but I wouldn't buy a sleeping head that didn't have an open-eye counterpart to it.

    8. Can I say "Yes"?
      I have all three in my crew. :lol:

      For me, which comes out as my favorite really depends on the individual sculpt... With some faces, I prefer the fully open-eyed version (Soom's Chalco, for instance, or Luts' Bliss-). With others I'm ALL ABOUT the Dreaming/Romantic versions (CP/Delf Moon is in that category-), and there are a few where I really do like the closed-eye sleeping version most of all (Soom's Euclase is the poster child for that bunch, along with the old CP/Delf Harang and Lu Wen heads-).

      Photographing them, I don't really find the Sleeping or Dreaming heads particularly limiting. People don't keep their eyes open all the time, so it doesn't seem odd to see a doll in a picture with their eyes closed either... and just sitting on a shelf in their cabinet, they seem pretty relaxed, like snoozing cats.

    9. I’ve been collecting roughly 3 dolls per year since 2006…and boy, that really adds up! From the very beginning, I was focussed on diversity within my collection, so of course by this time I’ve got all of the various eye types in my crew. I’ve always been entirely character driven in this hobby, so having different and varied expressions is very natural for me. Each level of eye openness conveys a certain mood or emotion for that character, which helps me to tell their story.

    10. I don't like closed eyes - but not because I find it ugly, but, as it was already mentioned, it's limiting. I want my doll to look at me.

    11. I prefer open eyes! I have one doll with both awake and sleeping heads and I like, never use the sleeping one... I do have one doll who is currently being modded to have closed eyes since it matches their character so that's a special case. I tried having them for awhile with eyes but it didn't work for them!

    12. I used to only like fully open eyes, but some of the doll eyes look too large and cartoonish. I learned to appreciate the half closed eyes. I find the half closed eyes to look alluring and charming at times. It's also nice to see how face up artists make amazing designs on the half closed eyes. The eye make up is more intricate and complex.

      I don't like fully closed eyes because I feel like I can't do much with a fully closed eyes doll when I one day get into photographing my dolls. The fully closed eyes dolls look a little dead to me and soulless.

      Sometimes almost completely closed eyes is alright with me if I really like the doll and that's the only option. I like the doll eyes small, but not small enough that I can't see the eyes I add in the doll head very well.

      These days I've been preferring eyes that are mono lidded, but double eyelids are fine too. It really just depends on my mood. I think if the dolls eyes are fully opened and double lidded it can make the dolls eyes too large looking.

      An example of open and half closed eyes I like is Idealian Euphoria Narmer basic and romantic heads. I like both. An example of doll eyes too large would be Volks SDGr Girl Maacha. I find her eyes take up too much space on her face, but I would buy this doll given the chance because overall she has styling and face up I like. The eyes is the only thing I dislike about the doll. The doll doesn't have to be perfect looking for me to buy it or have my exact preference.

      @Teddy
      That's interesting you find the partially closed eyes to look sly. I don't find the dolls face to look sly based on the eyes, but the face up and expression. I think i would like a sly looking doll expression now that i think about it.

      I guess it's really subjective based on the person. I'm not sure what you mean by nasty. Do you mean the doll looks mean because it's eyes are partially closed? That's interesting how diffferent people view a doll differently based on a specific feature. I never viewed a doll looking nasty based on it's facial features before.

      Now that I think about the reason I don't like such large eyes on dolls is because of it looking cartoonish, but also I feel as if the larger the doll's eyes the more dead and soulless they look to me just like how I feel for fully closed eyes dolls. I wasn't aware why I disliked such large eyes dolls besides the cartoonish aspect until now. I didn't realize I was viewing the large eyes dolls like that.

      @PoeticSoul
      I've been trying to get diverse dolls for my collection as well. That's the reason why I try to get as many colors, eye shapes, eye sizes, etc in my collection. The more variety in my doll collection the more satisfied i feel with my collection. Problem Is a lot of my dolls can't share clothing, eyes, etc.

    14. I like open eyes, or partly closed if they’re also smiling big. Dreaming eyes and sleeping eyes aren’t really my kind of thing.

    15. Usually fully or half-open eyes. There are few with closed eyes that I have any desire to get.

    17. I only own open eyes with two exceptions, and I most prefer it that way. I don't actively collect half open eyed dolls, because I haven't got that good a camera (horrible, in fact) and their eyes tend to just show as black holes unless I position the doll very specifically facing a light source. Open eyes are more visible in varying lighting (and bad lighting occurs a lot, because near the arctic circle the sun doesn't rise for some part of the winter).

      As for sleeping sculpts with fully closed eyes, I only owned one once as a secondary head and don't plan to buy any in the future. They're hard to do nice faceups on because many of them have no gap to neatly glue the lashes, and the faces seem kind of static and hard to photograph so that they don't look like they're sleepwalking. Limited use?

    18. I own pretty exclusively open-eyed dolls. I find myself drawn to partially-closed eyes dreaming heads too though. Typically if I have a sculpt I have to have *all* variations of that sculpt in the same skin tone as my main head for idk completionist reasons? For example, all of my fl dolls have their sleeping heads as well. I like to have options lol.

    19. I love looking my dolls in the eyes, so when I got into this hobby I was like "I'll never get a closed eyes sculpt". But after a month of looking at owner photos and finding closed eyes kinda comforting and calming, I purchased one! Excited and kinda anxious to find out how I feel about it in person, haha.
      Half-closed eyes are also great, I love the sultry and mature feeling they can have!

    20. Most of my dolls have fully open eyes, since that's how the majority of sculpts are, but I love the look of partly closed or narrow eyes, so several of my dolls are that type. It can make them look dreamy or thoughtful. For one of them, she tends to look unimpressed with the combination of the half closed eyes and the rest of her face sculpt.
